Republican Hagel Blasts McCain Attacks on Obama
July 27, 2008 12:20 PM
Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb, this morning criticized two attacks his friend, fellow Republican, fellow Vietnam veteran and Senate Russell Building next-door neighbor Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., launched against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, this week.
On CBS's Face the Nation this morning, host Bob Schieffer asked Hagel about McCain's claim that "Senator Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a campaign."
"I think John is treading on some very thin ground here when he impugns motives and when we start to get into, 'You're less patriotic than me. I’m more patriotic,'" Hagel said. "I admire and respect John McCain very much. I have a good relationship. To this day we do. We talk often. I talked to him right before I went to Iraq, as a matter of fact. John’s better than that."
Schieffer also asked about McCain's new TV ad in which he says Obama in Europe "made time to go to the gym but canceled a visit with wounded troops. Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras."
Hagel, who accompanied Obama on their official trip to Afghanistan and Iraq but broke off in Jordan, said, "the congressional delegation that you referred to ended when we parted in Jordan. At that point, it was a political trip for Senator Obama. I think it would have been inappropriate for him and certainly he would have been criticized by the McCain people and the press and probably should have been if on a political trip in Europe paid for by political funds - not the taxpayers -to go, essentially, then and be accused of using our wounded men and women as props for his campaign...I think it would be totally inappropriate for him on a campaign trip to go to a military hospital and use those soldiers as props. So I think he probably, based on what I know, he did the right thing."
Hagel said he wasn't sure about all the details of the controversy, but "we saw troops everywhere we went on the congressional delegation. We went out of our way to see those troops."
Hagel said of McCain's ad, "I do not think it was appropriate."

The implosion of the Republicans fills me with constant glee. Keep it up, Sen McCain, keep listening to your bankrupt advisors and we'll be able to take a broom into the election in Nov.

McCain advisors need to learn one basic rule of winning any political battle successfully. "Never attack the person, attack the system."

McCain is like the bully on the playground who taunts the "new kid". But the "new kid" takes his taunts with style, shows the bully how things should be done and wins the hearts of the crowd. The bully whimpers and cries in frustration when the crowd starts laughing at him. Time to grow up and deal with issues, not taunts.

What is wrong with personal attacks when they are true? Is that what its about? pointing out why you are better or different than the other guy?? Obama certainly isnt going to admit his closet full of skeletons and flaws.

McCain has had thirty years to do something from his seat in Congress. He still talks and accomplishes nothing. McCain's entire campaign is based on personal attacks. The issues elude him.

Hagel is just another sellout, who is gambling on an obama Presidency. Hagel sees the the republican ship sinking, and hes not man enough to go down with it. I would love nothing more than to see McCain beat the emptysuit, and his media groupies. I would absolutely relish in it.

knock knock!!! anybody home in Obama land??? Everything McCain has pointed out about the rookie senator/community organizer has been absolutely true. You guys have something against the truth?

Hagel - a Republican with tact and class. Rather unusual but certainly refreshing.

Republicans ask what they can do to energize voters. In my opinion, they need to put on their big boy shoes and stop whimpering! Attacks on a man who will not respond "in kind" only makes the attackers look like idiots.
Obama has something that you do not find often in Washington. It is called intelligence. The old marketing ploys do not work any more and Republicans just do not "get it".
You can not stand by a flag and "look patriotic".
You can not kiss babies and "look like you are a regular guy".
You can not attack your opponent and expect people to join in without reason. Lastly:
You cannot site, "it is the economy stupid", then present a plan that helps only the big money makers. Big money makers have taken all the jobs out of the US to foreign soil, we no longer owe them any loyalty.
Republicans need to put on your big boy shoes and join the new century. Obama is not a "rock star", he is speaking out well for those of use who are fed up with empty promises of the rich and famous. It is time Congress and all their rich friends to give. The taxpayers have paid to long for their lavish lifestyles.. They need to stop blaming Obama for failures of their own party.

Spock, we want someone of good character, not a character assassin.
That's what MCain's poltical ambiton has turned him into.

Sad to see that Senator McCain has driven this year's version of the "Straight Talk Express" on to the low road so early.

Don't we want a President with good Charactor? So if Obama's charactor is in question, then it is fair game.
Hagel is a phony republican, and he will be voted out of office!!
Please, funny is everybody but the politicians that went says they did not go every place where the troops were. ?Obama did not see the troops because he could not take his media employees with him!! So he could not get pictures!!

Not very presidential of McCain to attack on Character...it's desperate and mean and most importantly NON-PRODUCTIVE!
Anyway who is he to attack on character when everyone remembers his role in the Keating 5 scandal.

MSNBC reports on the truth:
NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that there was never a plan for Obama to take the press to Landstuhl, despite the claim by McCain folks and others. The plan was to go with his military aide, retired General Scott Gration. The Pentagon said Gration was off-limits because he had joined the campaign -- violating rules that it not be a political stop.
Obama had gone to see wounded troops in Iraq earlier in the week, without even confirming he'd been there. No press, no pictures. He has done the same when he goes to Walter Reed -- never any press.

Finally!
We're talking about Keating 5.
Wish the media would focus on that part of McCain's history!
Posted by: MMPP | Jul 28, 2008 12:46:12 PM
I remember Keating 5.
McCain's Keating 5 story sounds a lot like the Bush's administration...commit the crimes because you know you have the power to get away with it.
At Least Obama has never been accused of committing crimes against the American People.
That Keating 5 is FACT.
McCain's attacks are just his OPINION.

CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THE MEDIA RECYLCES THE
KEATING 5 STORY!
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE TO BE REMINDED THAT MCCAIN CHEATED AMERICAN LAW AND GOT AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE HE WAS A RICH MAN! AND THIS IS WHO IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?
Posted by: mccainthecheat | Jul 28, 2008 12:41:34 PM
McCain is the criminal that got away with prison time...anyone remember Keating 5?
Not very patriotic to think he can cheat Law Abiding Citizens out of their hard earned money!

This is a desperate attempt for McCain to win the White House.
Swiftboating John Kerry won the White House for Bush and look where this country is today. That's enough to reject the smear tactics that McCain has resorted to.
America is smarter than this because when we fell for the smear attacks by bush and the Republicans, the American people PAID A HIGH PRICE! We're not stupid enough to fall for it again!

I believe that his country does come first with Hegel and that winning the election comes first with Obama.
