Republicans Belittling Obama's Decent, if Overstated, Energy Efficiency Idea
July 31, 2008 5:54 PM
We took a look earlier today at Sen. Barack Obama's assertion that "we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups."
That's not accurate, our expert ruled.
Such moves would save about 800,000 barrels a day, as opposed to the 1.25 million barrels a day from drilling off shore.
Still, that doesn't mean the idea to is to be mocked, as many Republicans seem to be doing right now.
Unless, of course, you think 800,000 barrels of oil a day is to be sneezed at.
And without getting into all the reasons why we're in Iraq right now, and all the brave American men and women and Iraqis who have died because of the war, let's just posit that the more energy the U.S. can save, the better, and it's a serious issue.
So why is Sean Hannity making fun of it? (Listen here).
“All you need to do is inflate your tires!" Hannity said today. "That’s all you need to do. If every American would join in this effort of inflating one’s tires, then it’s all going to be fine! And we can still import 70% of our oil from Saudi Arabia. Just keep those tires inflated. And just keep that car tuned up of yours. The problem is Americans are not being responsible.’ You know what we need? We need a Department of Tire Inflation. If we would just have a government program designed so that every American can have their tires checked on a regular basis. I’ll tell you, I think we probably would be doing a lot better.”
No one said the energy problem could be solved by this tire issue, Mr. Hannity. And is it really such a horrible thing for public officials to use their bully pulpits to raise such issues. (You'll notice that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., didn't dismiss the moves when he discussed them.)
It was just a few weeks ago when two Republican governors (one of them a potential VP pick for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz) were talking about Americans keeping their engines tuned and tires inflated.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., and Charlie Crist, R-Florida, according to the Los Angeles Times "appealed to those with the real power to make change -- average citizens -- to drive slower, keep engines tuned and tires properly inflated, to buy hybrids and lower overall consumption."
We all know how this works. Within a day or two a bunch of Republican congressmen will be making an issue out of this, twisting Obama's words and making the idea seem silly.
That's a shame.

i dont consider myself a genius by any means--but if i know the answers. WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR GOVERNMENT----like him or not obama may be the best chance we have as mccain will be nothing more than a continuance of present leadership--he has voted with bush 95% of the votes--that tells you something. ofshore drilling will not solve any of our problems -just make billions more for big oil as oil is sold on the world market and is controlled by big oil and opec. you are in for the fight of your lives-to get alternates up and running--too much corruption.

hear is what must be done---first we need new style reactors built--the ones that reuse spent rods--that alone can produce the electric we need--and yes it is very safe---why has the past administration started that prodject--BIG OIL PAYOFF WHAT ELSE and mccain has been a part of it.he can spout all he wants now as a coverup.

The Republicans have become such idiots, they know that their days are numbered and they are using everything to throw at the democrats even the kitchen sink. I am really disappointed that I am a republican. I am divorcing myself from the republican party.

I heard that Ford overseas has (and for a while) models that get 40+ mpg. But we can't have the same over here for what reason???
Oh yes, it's too difficult, and the oil cos wouldn't like it over here.

we cannot be independant with oil alone we have long passed that point----alternate fuels and energy are a must.
mccain has had 30 years to do something about it-----when he spouts ofshore drilling i know exactly who he is pandering to---BIG OIL and that is disturbing

in the 60s 70s area we had a car volkeswagon rabbit diesel somewhere around 50 mpg where did that one go. if everyone slowed down to 55 to 60 mph we cound cut usage by as much as 20%---the public seems to learn nothing.

NEW BOOK OUT ON OBAMA....THE TRUTH ABOUT HIM...GOOD READING!!
Posted by: JED | Aug 1, 2008 8:06:32 AM
When Obama states that inflating our tires would replace ALL the oil that could be gotten by drilling, that's a ridiculous statement and he deserves to be ridiculed for it.
Worse, it shows a complete misunderstanding of the need for domestic drilling. It isn't just to bring gas prices down, although it would. It's to quit funding terrorism by sending American money to countries that hate us. Plus, it averts an impending world war with China and India over oil which there's no way we can win.
Domestic drilling isn't just about Energy, it's also about National Security. And let's not forget McCain's ENTIRE policy - Conserve, Produce, Invent. That's the ticket to Energy Independence.

JA- " . .. but supplement it with proven ways to help our energy problem. Those include nuclear and offshore drilling. Both of which Obama opposes."
But Obama is actually nuclear energy friendly. He's received significant contributions from the nuclear industry along with having a pretty cozy relationship with Exelon, which has a nuclear plant in Illinois. There are some of us who wish he were greener, not in experience, of course, but with environmental issues.

willem - is that a joke or a serious question? is there anything the bush administration has NOT lied about? i believe he has a dog and his wife is named laura. other than that... the man wouldn't even know it if he did tell the truth.

What's gotten lost in the discussion of offshore drilling is that the oil produced will not be U.S. property. Cenk Uygur of Young Turks pointed this out:
"The oil that comes from that drilling will not be United States property (Republicans aren't suggesting we nationalize the oil companies, are they?). It will be the property of whichever oil company got the rights to that contract. They can then sell it to whoever they like -- and they will. They will sell it on the world market, so the Chinese will have just as much access to the oil that comes out of the coast of Florida as we will." (July 23, 2008)

@JA: "I've seen Obama and others claim that:
1. Oil from offshore drilling will come on tap 10 years from now
And 2. that will not effect prices now
Both of these claims are factually wrong."
==================================
Those are not Obama's claims. Those claims from the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
Are you accusing the Bush Administration of lying?

Inflating your tires does improve your gas mileage a bit, and it improves handling. That said, Hannity is a republican stooge, that wouldn't give a dem credit even if that dem had the most brilliant idea since sliced bread. The same is true for liberal talk show hosts preaching spin on the other side.

One other comment to the general readership:
I've seen Obama and others claim that:
1. Oil from offshore drilling will come on tap 10 years from now
And 2. that will not effect prices now
Both of these claims are factually wrong. The first is wrong from an engineering standpoint. We can start to get some of the oil from offshore drilling with 3 years.
The second is wrong from an economic standpoint. The markets will price in a supply spike into current prices NOW. That Obama does not understand this proves he knows absolutely NOTHING about markets.
Had McCain made such an idiotic comment, he would have been beaten to death with it.

Obama is so full of hot gas, he can inflate all tires properly by himself.
Obama for Secretary of Inflation!

It's true that Obama never claimed inflating your tires and getting regular tune-ups is the panacea to fixing our oil problems, he has not put forward any CONCRETE proposals himself. Just saying you're going to invest in wind, solar, etc technology is not a real plan. It's the generic line that your average Joe off the street would spit at you if you asked him his solution to the energy problem.
And so we now get a concrete solution from Obama to easing the problem - inflate your tires and tune up your car. While in and of itself a good idea, the real error of the Obama campaign is that THIS IS THE MOST CONCRETE PLAN WE'VE RECEIVED FROM HIM TO DATE.
No doubt, people will say he has a lot planned for energy. In reality, most of his solutions are framed around - let's invest more in alternative fuels and eventually it will work out. No real solutions. No proof that just throwing money at the problem will fix it. And no backup plan in case things don't work out as well for alternative energy as many of us HOPE (in reality, NONE of us know).
The best and safest strategy is to push forward alternative energy, but supplement it with PROVEN ways to help ease our energy problem. Those include nuclear and off shore drilling. Both of which Obama opposes. These are concrete and very real options.
The real issue here is that Obama is not giving us CONCRETE and PROVEN ways to help our energy dependency. He is giving us a little speech that any of us can make, providing no real detail beyond what any of us who studies up for a day on the subject could present.
And that is the ultimate failure of this campaign. All talk, no action, no plan for action.

why is the GOP really going after offshore drilling the oil companies have leases for millions of acres to do their exploring. they can drill all they want but they wont because it will drive the price down OFFSHORE drilling is just a little game thats being played Oh and by the way check with your manufacturers manual

And the networks wonder why 52% of the population distrust the news media? Can you say in the tank? If McCain had said this he would have been ridiculed by all of the alphabet news readers.

Let's see --
The democratic congress continues to suppress additional energy sources so the law of supply and demand kicks in and prices rise. Consumption falls.
Now, reduced consumption means less taxation so that same congress want to raise the gasoline tax by 10 to 50 cents per gallon.
Which raises prices and the problems spins out of control.
Anybody see a fallacy in the argument posed by the ruling party in DC
?
