Schwarzenegger: 'Flip-Flopping Is Getting a Bad Rap'
July 13, 2008 12:08 PM
On "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" this morning, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was talking about how Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has been moving towards the center, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., would, in his view, hopefully start doing so.
"In politics out there, they always say, 'Well, now, I don't know anymore what he really stands for. He has just changed his mind...'" Schwarzenegger said.
"Flip-flopper," said George.
"'...and he's flip-flopping' and all those kinds of things," the Republican governor continued. "Let me tell you something. Flip-flopping is getting a bad rap, because I think it is great. Someone has made a mistake. I mean, someone has, for 20 or 30 years, been in the wrong place with his idea and with his ideology and says, 'You know something? I changed my mind. I am now for this.' As long as he's honest or she's honest, I think that is a wonderful thing. You can change your mind...
"I have changed my mind on things and there is nothing wrong with it," Schwarzenegger continued. "But I'd just say to the people, I'd say, 'Look, I once felt this way. Now I think this way,' end of story."

What politician doesn't flip flop? The American political process is a joke and the voters are sheep. There are a lot more poor and uneducated voters than rich educated ones. Winning elections is about convincing the sheep to vote, not stating their real views. Every election is a contest to be considered the lesser of two evils. Obama is the lesser of two evils this time around.

Where was Schwarzenegger when Kerry was
being accused of flip flopping by Republicans?
Is it politically correct when its in THEIR favor?

That certainly does not describe BHO!
He flips and flops for political purposes -- not because he's changed his mind.

What is the difference ?

Most people can tell the difference between lying and changing one's mind. When you promise something, like ending a war promptly, you do it … or resign from office.

---"But I'd just say to the people, I'd say, 'Look, I once felt this way. Now I think this way,' end of story."---
Arnie is LIGHT YEARS ahead of Barack in terms of 'flip-flopping' in a way that doesn't make him look like he's being politically calculating such that it alienates people.
When Arnie flip-flops, you know on one level that he's doing it but you still feel like he's factored everybody's interests into his assessments AS WELL AS his own. With Barack you feel like it's all about Barack.
Hence the bad rap for Barack . . . and the bad flip-flopping I might add. I don't know whether you'd see Arnie make such a stupid mistake as to support telecom immunity and then try to be the slickster in making people think his thinking was one thing when it was really another. I don't get the sense that Arnold flip-flops when he knows he's not going to be able to explain it in a way that's palatable to MANY MANY more people.
Barack isn't losing support just amongst the 'far left', he's hemorreaging support amongst the centrist independents who like strong leaders.

I used to be against drilling off the coasts and in the US too. We needed to save our oil reserves for as long as we could while oil was relatively inexpensive and up till the point to the tech came along to where we could drill environmentally friendly and where the oil we harvested could actually be brought up and refined....we are at this point now. McCain was right to hold off on the drilling and now is the time to change that position because times have changed. Only idiots (Obama nut supporters) can't grasp this simple concept.

* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
* McCain thought Bush’s warrant-less-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization
* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrant-less surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.
* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.
* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.
* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.
* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn't’t be allowed.
* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.
* In 2005 he said that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.
* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.
* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.
* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.
* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag

Abe Lincoln used to say when asked about being "two faced" as it was called back then, "I'd like to think I was smarter and know more than I did before."
I am okay with Obama changing his mind based on learning more about a situation(ie. Iraq), but not based on who he's talking to at the moment.

IN HOW MANY YEARS?
And, speaking of still counting.... have you read "Obama's Laundry List of Lies" lately????
I like McCain..... trust him..
He's open minded enough to change, conservative enough to be cautious.
He may be plain.... but he's sane!
HILLARY THEN MCCAIN...
but always

Ahhh-nold is an iiii-diot. Change your position because circumstances have changed-- good. Change your position simply to get more votes-- not good. A real conservative presidential candidate would make mincemeat out of flip-flopping ultra-liberal Obama. Since we don't have on, Obama will probably win.

Cornelius,
The problem is that Obama is not a strong man, and he's flopping the wrong way. He's not changing his mind based on facts, but is trying to create illusions for the voters. He's appeasing voters into voting for him. Appeasement is an act of a weakling.

Obama -- just messin' with you man!!!!!

Astrong honest man changes his mind when necessary, a fool does not. See what regidity of mind has done to America under Mr. Bush. Does America deserve what we are getting toda? NO. Had we had a wise leader he would have changed his mind on Iraq, Pakistan, Tax cuts for the rich.
Now troop withdrawal will begin with Bush, more banks will colapse under him. Is this strenght or weakness. It is too late for senator McCain to distance himself from the failures of the Bush administration.

I do not approve of or tolerate Arnold Schwarzenegger or Barack Obama .

I use to like Arnold now I think he's a pig! Change you can believe in.
Posted by: Tony | Jul 13, 2008 6:27:49 PM
If you believed something yesterday, changed your mind, and now believe something different today, that's fine if your belief is honest and if there was a good reason for the change.
Obama's beliefs are not honest. I do not think he really believes anything. In addition, the only reason Obama changes his position is politics, which is not a good reason for changing.
He keeps saying, "change you can believe in," but what he really means is, "I want you to believe me when I change."

A "No" vote for the new FISA bill was not a vote to protect American Freedom. It was a vote to allow the enemy to communicate unimpeded with anyone, anytime, anywhere.
The 4th Amendment protects us against "unreasonable searches and seizures" without a warrant. Clearly had our founding fathers intended for ALL searches and seizures to require warrants they could have said "against all searches and seizures." That means there are reasonable searches and seizures that do NOT require a warrant. When a suspected DUI driver is pulled over and given a breathalyzer test there is no warrant required. When an individual is ordered out of his car and he is searched for weapons this is done so without a warrant. So clearly there are reasonable searches and seizures that do not require warrants. And what could be more reasonable than searching and seizing communications between a foreign enemy and individuals within the United States during time of war?

I think I figured out why Arnie is backing Obama----because Obama in all likelyhood isn't a natural citizen given citizenship laws when he was born and is why he is refusing to come up with this birth certificate----Arnie wants the natural citizen laws changed so he can be president. No wonder our founding fathers only wanted natural born citizens---

HILLARY DID NOT CHANGE HER MIND. SHE VOTED NO ON FISA. SHE VOTED TO PROTECT AMERICAN FREEDOM.
OBAMA LIED AND VOTED YES ON FISA. ABUSE BY OBAMA. HE TOOK AWAY FREEDOM FROM EVERY AMERICAN.
