The Best Detail from the Stevens Indictment
July 29, 2008 3:24 PM
We're taking a more comprehensive look at the indictment of Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, for World News with Charles Gibson, and HERE on abcnews.com…
But my favorite detail from the indictment -- in the Spring of 1999, the indictment alleges, the CEO of oil services company VECO, Bill Allen, traded Stevens a brand new 1999 Land Rover Discovery, worth about $44,000, for Stevens' 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang and $5,000.
Stevens' Mustang was at the time worth less than $20,000, the indictment says.

Steven's fortunate that it's only a quarter of million he's being called on the carpet for because for all his years in Congress, you know there's gotta be way more than that he has not declared.

Not trying to defend the guy, but depending on the condition, a '64 'Stang can be a very valuable car.

Many politicians have accepted gifts, perks, bribes etc. Even though he failed in some respects, he has acted with honor by resigning from all leadership positions. It would be nice if others who have accepted gifts for favors would do the same.

Yea, throw all the bums out, especially that Senator from Illinois that received a $300,000 gift from a political fixer and now convicted criminal. That is more than all the $$$s listed on the indictment against Senator Stevens. And Senator Obama did not list that $%300,000 as a gift tax forms.
YEA, THROW OUT THE BUM.

---Hang---Both the bridge and the casino went down and out during Katrina and no plans to rebuild. The Bridge had no name as far as I know.

So the Feds are going after Senator Stevens because he may have made $5,000 on a car deal. Why don't they look at Senator Obama and his deal worth up to $300,000 on a mansion with the criminal partner Rezko. Different strokes for different folks. The Democrats just wanted Stevens out. Period.

What bridge in New Orleans?
Posted by: hang | Jul 29, 2008 4:35:44 PM
The so-called "Bridge to Nowhere" was a bridge to an airport so people would not have to take open boat rides to catch a plane. Yes, it as on an island and about 20/30 residents lived there too but it certainly was not a bridge to nowhere.
In New Orleans, the taxpayers paid more than that for a bridge to a floating casino for the gasmblers.

I certainly am not sticking up for Stevens, but a 64 1/2 Mustang, especially one in either original condition, or fully restored is worth an awful lot of money.
You can't get one of the new "retro" Mustangs for under 25K.
Have you ever watched the televised Barrett-Jackson car auction? They get six figures for classic muscle cars.

another McCain 20 year friend for all of you to ignore

Innocent until proven.....but I have never felt that Stevens served anyone but himself. The bridge to nowhere is only one of many examples.
I think that any quid pro quo Justice may have that relates to bribes will be ignored if Stevens takes his treasure and goes quietly.
Next stop Murtha?

JOe
as a big obama supporter...
McCain hated Stevens.
Stevens was pissed at the reform bill that looked at company contracts with government officials...and to be honest ...
in the other direction when
they went toe to toe on the FCC issues because McCain was trying to pass an agenda that would protect the larger companies from the FCC and Stevens went after McCain on this (remember Mccain's supposed love affair with the Lobbyist for the communication companies)...
it was about that issue...
there is no love lost between Mccain and Stevens.

I actually have to give Mccain his due on this...because it was probably mcCain's bill on opening the curtain on government contracts and Stevens trying to squash it that made them start investigating him.
McCain is not the right guy for President but back in 2006 he tried to open up these back deals (before the lobbyists all took positions on his campaign staff obviously) but this was back when he didn't need them to win the white house his long awaited bill upset Stevens quite a bit.
I am sure that was the start or atleast a significant change in what has lead to Stevens demise.

ok a 1964 Mustang to some is worth a lot, and the fact that he added 5,000 dollars shows that it was a trade
What is the crime.
Meanwhile the libs have Reid illegally selling land, jefferson with frozen cash, Murtha caught on tape, Obama's purchase of a multimillion dollar home and the feds are worried becasue someone traded cars!!
even by their estimate was only 19,000 dollars at most,
look at ebay how many things get sold there for more then worth.
If I had the money i would buy a 68 mustang if needed for 50,000

Hey a 64 'stang may not be the muscle version but it was good enough for Tilly Masterson and gave the Aston Martin a run (not that it could in real life; a six won't cut it).
A Land Rover ain't worth spit in any year model. The Aston Martin? Maybe.

He's a republican... Look I don't know what happened to that party and their moral high ground but obviuosly they are lying cheating crooks. At least this one is. I'm just glad to see this happen in the higher branches. My father worked for the feds and you can't use that position to get favors. He couldn't even tell the fireplace salesman that he was a federal employee.

It's a classic Ford, worthy of more than $400,000!
