The Hot Mic Gaffe

July 11, 2008 8:29 AM

Mike Kinsley once famously suggested that a gaffe is when a politician accidentally tells the truth.

As we explored on last night's Nightline look at other infamous hot mic moments, we need a new word for the degree of candor a "hot mic" gaffe conveys.

Certainly Rev. Jesse Jackson saying he wants to cut off Sen. Barack Obama's cashews is a moment beyond just a normal gaffe. Throw in the hot mic -- and we need a new term.

Any wordsmiths out there want to give it a shot?

RE: S. Valenti

I am in aggreement that too much attention is being given to Jessie Jackson remarks. Jessie Jackson is of the past in his thinking. He is jelous
of Obama because Jackson was never able to reach this level when he ran for president. Jackson is not in a place to judge anyone's commitment, especially Obama's.
I am AA and have never supported Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton. They do not speak for me or many others from the African American community. To believe that two men can speak to the beliefs and concerns of millions is sterotyping the enitre African Community and the sooner the mainstream media realizes this and stop putting them at the fore front to speak for African Americans the better. I agree totally with Obama's speech on black men and women to start taking responsibily for their families. Yes their will always those who need help, but there is also large number of men and women who can work and choose not to.

Too much attention is being given to the crude nature of Jackson's remarks or his presumed jealosy of BO.

Why isn't the media analyzing the rest of what he said; specifically, BO is "talking down to black people". Rev. Jackson is well placed to judge the depth of BO's commitment to african american issues.

BO should be concerned too about smearing Rev. Jackson - particularly turning loose his own son and his disgraceful remarks. Jackson is much better known than BO. I know Obama can spell B-A-C-K-L-A-S-H.

I have to say I have worked on films and television shows and people talk under their breath all the time thinking that's less noticable... I even do it.

but ask any sound guy how much dirt he has...

most have lots.

Wouldn't the term "out-foxed" be appropriate? I gotta say, If you make sure your mic is not hot anywhere, make sure it's not at the Fox network. What was Mr. Jackson thinking?

That goes to show how desperate Fox News is !!!!!!!!!!

News outlets have released open mike gaffes before, I believe. Didn't Reagan famously say something about attacking Russia?

A lapse in media ethics? Why isn't anyone other than First Read asking why a "respectable" media outlet would release a supposed off-the-mic comment like that? Or wondering if said "respectable" organization with a well known ideological tilt might make a habit of leaving mics on on purpose?

when a candidate "meets Professor Marvel"

and
"speak in the vernacular of the peasantry"

Professor Marvel was the man behind the Wizard's curtain.
