When Fox Attacks

July 07, 2008 7:58 AM

After New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg wrote a story about Fox News Channel that officials at the cable news network apparently did not like, Fox & Friends ran doctored, unflattering photos of the two men.

The altered photo of Steinberg in particular has struck some within the Times building as a tad anti-Semitic.

Times columnist David Carr today -- in a larger look at Fox News' dealings with the media -- compares the altered image to "vintage German propaganda, his ears were pulled out, his teeth splayed apart, his forehead lowered and his nose was widened and enlarged in a way that made him look more like Fagin than the guy I work with." And Times television columnist Bill Carter concurs.

Fox News spokesman Brian Lewis disputes the notion that there was any bias at play, calling it "vile and untrue."

Your thoughts?

Steinberg looks like Quasimodo, the gruesome and tragic character from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Fox is actually showing some class by invoking a great literary figure such as Victor Hugo.

This is the kind of story you are reporting on? Do you know how bad you look trying to knock down the #1 cable channel in the country? You look weak and feeble.

Why don't you try reporting on something relevant? We have successfully reached 13 of the 18 objectives on our way to helping Iraq be free, and NONE of the major networks have said anything about it.

You are in the bag for the Democrats, and you always will be. The sad part is that there are many people out there who just don't realize how poorly they have been treated by the major networks. As more and more people open their eyes, you'll see your viewership drop (more than it already has). In 10 years, ABC News will be jsut a footnote.

I have a perhaps a unique take on this affair. Recently I have completed an associate degree in photography and I also have a degree in traditional art. I have used Photoshop extensively and have done photo manipulations in darkrooms so I feel I can give a good critique of the "quality" of Fox's work.

My verdict, it sucks.

This inept hit job is so bad that if I had turned that in for a grade in my Introduction to Computer Graphics class I would have been laughed out of the room, with me in tears. I'm joking but not by much.

In addition, my father was a damn good journalist back in the day and ingrained in me the importance of journalistic ethics at an early age, even though I held no ambition to follow in his footsteps. In all honesty this is the same type of yellow journalism that demeans the nobler aspects of the profession. I also have a suggestion for Fox News.

Please, please find a half dead member of the Nazi propaganda machine to improve your skill set.

If your going to be evil and corrupt, at least do it well.

Newsflash: Fox News is a JOKE. It had been a joke for the last 10 years. It's just that people have finally started to notice.

The NY Had previously posted a very negative appearing cariacture of a fox correspondent. So I guess they can lie, dish it out and then can't take it. When is the NY Times going to shut their doors for good. We'll all be better off.

It is amazing that most of these liberals don't know they are liberals.

Posted by: Gant | Jul 7, 2008 9:13:52 PM

Wow. I read the first 20 comments or so, (Fox is typically way out of line, in my opinion) and it turns out most people are predictable idiots who only want their prejudices reinforced.

No one seeking the light.

Physicians, heal thyselves. Please. For the love of God, do it before another 50,000 women in Iraq are forced into prostitution. The 'liberal' media has got to stop suppressing such information!

Are any of you people even alive?

I watch MSNB,CNN, FOX, ESPAN. The more information the better I feel about my decisions. It's always something too far to the right, too far to the left. American can make up their minds without the silly commentators. They are amusing but certainly I never take their point of view seriously. I take my point of view seriously. Great job all of you.

It's tragic that objective reporting (NYT, BBC, etc...) are continuously attacked by bought-for, intentionally-biased media (Fox, Wall Street Journal). Conservatives prove this point consistently by believing a liberal bias in 'news' which they don't like... Oddly, many conservatives are not intending to solely support the 'rich' (which is the point of Murdoch's editorial efforts), but they are just not perceptive enough to recognize the attack on a egalitarian society....

Jo - Got to go to lunch. Enjoyed it as usual. It seems like we always tangle.

Posted by: Ben Straub | Jul 7, 2008 1:34:00 PM

let me amend the earlier post: msnbc was GENERALLY biased for obama

Posted by: chris | Jul 7, 2008 1:32:02 PM

see jo? the ability to recognize reality is a virtue, not a show of weakness.....it's ok, you can do it too, if you only try....

Posted by: chris | Jul 7, 2008 1:30:35 PM

for the record, msnbc was heavily biased for obama

Posted by: chris | Jul 7, 2008 1:29:07 PM

Carlton, thanks. Nobody should do it, but to be selectively outraged only when Fox News does it is what is ridiculous and that's what I'm pointing out.

Posted by: Jo | Jul 7, 2008 1:28:32 PM

Jo - Unbiased truth is what I am interested in. That is usually why I go through all of the outlets including FOX to reach some conclusion on what is going on. Jim Lehrer seems to be a good one without big noses.

Posted by: Ben Straub | Jul 7, 2008 1:26:08 PM

1. The pictures were altered with very little skill. If there intent was to mislead anyone then they didn't do a very good job.
2. In the video seconds after the pictures they show probably the same distorted pictures, with a man holding onto a dog. 1 picture replacing the face of the man and 1 picture replacing the face of the dog. A reasonable person could come to the conclusion that Fox is altering pictures in this section. Duh!
3. From: Wikipedia

"Caricatures can be:

* Insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines."

Hm! Political and Entertainment. Clever like a *!

Fox goes to far sometimes. But frankly after watching MSNBC one night when the anchors job could have been described as: inciting to riot and preaching hate towards Bush. I decided to do a ritual cleansing and will not watch MSNBC ever again. Thank You!

Posted by: carlton lee | Jul 7, 2008 1:25:40 PM

Ben, one show out of the whole lineup?

And now it's balanced?

Sure. Lol.

Posted by: Jo | Jul 7, 2008 1:24:22 PM

Brigitte, yes, Fox shouldn't have done it. But New York Times is such a joke I'm sure they couldn't resist.

Again, your selective fury is hilarious. You could care less when the others do it. Oh, wait, you probably didn't HEAR about it when the liberal media did it, did you?
Only Fox News bothers to report that stuff.

So again, you make my point.

Posted by: Jo | Jul 7, 2008 1:18:58 PM

Jo you're losing it. The Fox news hi jinks is what I thought we were discussing. Not other news outlets. However, for the record no news out should alter photos in the manner Fox news did.

Posted by: brigitte | Jul 7, 2008 1:24:18 PM

Jo - Left? Right? Actually one of my favorites is the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Seems to be pretty factually accurate without all the pomp and circumstance.

Posted by: Ben Straub | Jul 7, 2008 1:22:36 PM

Chris, since research studies have PROVEN those news outlets you mention all tilt way left, YOU'RE the one who looks like a fool.

Sorry, but you do.
