White House Accidentally E-Mails to Reporters Story That Maliki Supports Obama Iraq Withdrawal Plan

July 19, 2008 1:29 PM

The White House this afternoon accidentally sent to its extensive distribution list a Reuters story headlined "Iraqi PM backs Obama troop exit plan - magazine."

The story relayed how Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told the German magazine Der Spiegel that "he supported prospective U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months … ‘U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,'" the prime minister said.

The White House employee had intended to send the article to an internal distribution list, ABC News' Martha Raddatz reports, but hit the wrong button.

The misfire comes at an odd time for Bush foreign policy, at a time when Obama's campaign alleges the president is moving closer toward Obama's recommendations about international relations -- sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, discussing a "general time horizon" for U.S. troop withdrawal and launching talks with Iran.

It's obviously a Freudian slip.

For once they actually did something for the good of the country.

They're admitting that McCain would be a lousy President and they are conceding that Obama is the one they hope wins.

Except for Chaney, of course. He still wants to nuke Iran and probably wants to nuke Russia, too, as soon as those missiles are installed in Poland.

IF we had followed through with Afghanistan, including following Al Quada and the Taliban into Pakistan, Al Qaeda could have been effectively squashed, as well as the Taliban. Remember, it was Bush who said to the world that we wouldn't give terrorists "safe haven" anywhere in the world - but we did in Pakistan. Yes, Afghanistan is a place where we should place enormous pressure - and then follow-through in Pakistan. It's time to break Al Queda's and the Taliban's back and we can do it.

We face a well-organized Al Qaeda because Bush back-peddled on his promise when we had them on the run - they were too interested in the war-for-profit in Iraq to settle real national security issues that could have effectively mitigated the "war on terror." Now we have to do it over again, with higher American casualties, to finish an operation that was picture-perfect until American forces decided to allow the Afghanistan forces to handle the Mop-up in Tora Bora - and they let Al Qaeda and the Taliban escape into Pakistan, and the mistake was 100% ours.I'm a Liberal/Progressive, however I believe that we need to finish-off Afghanistan and follow through in Pakistan and deal a death-blow to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. This was our supposed battele-plan, but we let Musharraf step-in and play both sides against the middle.

We need a real commander in chief, one that will look out for our national security and safety over profit. What he and Cheney started In Georgia was self-defeating, and now we have helped to cut Europe off Caspian oil, as well as ourselves, and the Russians are not retreating because Poland signed that pact with the US to deploy elements of out defense shield there. Bush is poking a stick into a hornets nest in Russia without any idea of how they will react. As soon as the pact was signed with Poland, the Russians have moved closer to the capitol of Georgia. They're pissed - Georgia was warned not to attack the Russian sympathizers, but with Israel and US support, they went forward and antagonized Russia - something we don't need to be doing. The full blame for this fiasco lies with Cheney and Bush, more Cheney than anything else, and we have to impeach these criminals before they kill us all.

I have some doubts about whether this was really an inadvertent act on the part of the White House staff.

I have my own conspiracy theory about what is going on right now regarding the apparent shift in the Bush Administration towards Obama's international policy recommendations, but for now, I'd like to say, it is working and that's OK! Is President Bush trying to increase his approval rating on Obama's coat tail before leaving office? Is the Scretary of State using her powerful position? You go girl!

The world, and apparently, even the White House - can see that Obama is the right President for America at this time in its unfolding history. Perhaps there is a measure of myopia in some pockets of the country - GET OVER IT!

John McCain is already history He is an old man, a warrior, a war monger who talks tough, shakes his gun and drops off the sleep. Yet he wants to commit America to 100 years in Iraq. Who is listening and believing and liking what he touts like an old LP record stuck in a groove.

Really, by what measure is the U.S. appalling in the last 8 years of our lives? Maybe something going on between the ears.

We are now in a world economy, apparently we can't expect to get to pay half what the world pays for gas and we can't expect to be risk free with our investing, and our mortality continues to be a concern for all men.

Response to KJ on excess deaths caused by US Invasion/Occupation of IRAQ. Recommend you read one of the most comprehensive studies on this:

That's interesting. So the truth only comes out accidentally with this Presidency. BTW - anyone who doesn't think there's a difference between the two candidates has obviously missed the utter destruction launched on the U.S. these last dreadful eight years by the most incompetent President ever. To follow that up with another candidate (McBush) who thinks we're on the right track is either masochistic or truly oblivious to reality.

Seriously? The White House emails an article and that's a big deal? Who cares? I email articles all of the time. Doesn't everyone? Did they say something offensive in the email?

in response to M.W. comment, 'Millions have died.'

Millions?!? Millions haven't died.

Posted by: james | Jul 20, 2008 8:25:37 PM

People really need to stop saying the war has "largely succeeded." How?! Millions are dead, there is still DAILY violence, Al-Qaeda is back and worse than before 9/11, and there is still not a legitimate government in Iraq. There are still thousands of troops remaining in Iraq from the "surge" and their constant stop-lossing is creating enormous problems for them and their families. Don't any of you care about the troops more than you care about the Republicans being right? They don't want to "win," they want to go home!

Obama or McCain? Does it really matter. There is no one that will ever be elected to the Presidency or Congress that will/can do what is required to put the US back on track. They are all owned. And so are we.

We could become energy independent just harnessing the wind that comes from the EIB microphone everyday...enough hot air to power the galaxy....

I meant to say that Sen. Obama is very respected and has the full support of Texas oil men.

Senator Obama's staff has looked at the likely draw-down scenarios and is pushing the most likely one as if they thought it up...and are recommending it to the President. What joke. If the President had followed any of Obama's previous recommendations there would have been a civil war in Iraq, with Iran and Saudi Arabia at each other's throats...and gas at $8 a gallon! The President relies on his commanders for recommendations. Maybe Obama relies on the likes of disgraced retired General Wesley Clark for advice. In any event, if Obama becomes President it will be a replay of the foreign policy fiascos that we saw with Bill Clinton...amateurs making a hash of things.

These "empty suit" type of comments are just stupid.

Argue about a policy difference...perhaps your differences with him on abortion or energy policy.

When you say he is just an empty suit or just a great speaker, then your comments are "empty" and stupid.

sO oBAMA SAID THE SURGE WOULDNT ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING AND NOW THAT THINGS ARE BETTER AND IT LOOKS LIKE THINGS WILL CONTINUE TO GET BETTER WE WILL BE ABLE TO DRAW DOWN. AND BECAUSE OBAMA HAS BEEN SAYING BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW FOR 6 YEARS HE IS A GENIUS?

WELL IF THATS THE CASE THAN THOSE WHO SAY THE WORLD IS COMING TO AND END ARE ASLO GENIUSES, SINCE IT IS INEVITABLE THAT THE WORLD WILL END SOME DAY.

I know it sucks but the wealthy business owners have had a free ride for past 20 years. THEY need to pay now because Bush has soiled the economy so much for them.

It won't matter who's the POTUS if an EMP is initiated over the Mid-US. It's more important to get along without war with others than risk a horrible EMP scenario. I'd rather have diplomatic statesmanship and sound judgement from the POTUS than risk the real danger of a nation-paralyzing EMP.
