A Whiter Shade of Palin
August 29, 2008 11:24 AM
When considering Sen. John McCain's, R-Ariz., VP pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, it's worth putting into context how focused McCain has been about winning the women voters who supported Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and are not yet sold on Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
Just think about how often McCain praised Clinton during and after her campaign, and all the McCain TV ads featuring Clinton.
To that end, consider the immediate reaction of Clinton adviser Howard Wolfson, who writes today
in a short piece titled "I'll See Your Biden and Raise You a Palin," that "you are going to have a lot of women voters wondering why Sen. Obama didn't tap Sen. Clinton as his running mate."
The McCain camp will argue that Palin has a great life story, is a reformer, has executive experience as governor and the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. She also knows quite a bit about energy issues.
Palin doesn't exactly scream "experience," which is McCain's main argument against Obama. For a decade, she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, which has a population of approximately 8,471, which the Obama campaign says is less than 1/20th the size of his former state senate district.
Palin has been governor for two years. Some might argue that, in terms of experience, she makes Obama look like Robert Byrd.
In July, Palin told CNBC's Larry Kudlow that "as for that VP talk all the time, I tell ya, I still can't answer that question until, until somebody answers for me 'What it is exactly that the vice president does every day?'"
The McCain campaign says in a statement: "Gov. Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington. ... Gov. Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today."

I loved Palin's speech tonight. She made her experience clear. She supported McCain. She explained her views on drilling for energy, but also discussed the need for alternative energy. She stressed the importance of protecting our country.
I watched CNN because I wanted to see how Palin would be treated. Surprisingly, I was very impressed that they covered the speech fairly. I truly did not expect them to report favorably.
The democrates praised Biden for being an attack dog for Obama. After the speech, the democrates said Palin was shreeking and saying the same old thing. I think McCain and Palin will be bringing a lot of change to Washington and the rest of the Nation.

I am so sick of the media coverage of this election. I thought the United States had more magazines and major news stations that truly wanted to give voters all of the information.
The media is saturated with coverage of Obama. Anyone with a brain can see how one sided this election coverage has been this year.
I hope the public has enough foresight to research all of the candidates and make an informed decision. Watch Fox News as well as CNN, NBC or ABC. Get online and find out the real public records yourself. Look at the votes and proposals that have been made by all the Senators. Find out more about the official record of Sahah Palin and not just what the rags want you think.
Wise up America. We are being treated like mushrooms. The majority of the media is trying to keep us in the dark and feed us ****. Don't be brain washed.

Sammy: What experience does Obama have outside of missing 130 days or more from the senate plus saying to the public "I was against the war" when he wasn't even there that day to vote. He is the biggest underhanded liar of all the candidates that ran for office of this country. Everyone knows that Hillary got swindled out of delegate votes so Obama could win. Nancy Pelosi wanted it that way. I hope the republicans take the house back to rid ourselves of her.

Robin Terry: You are correct. And I am willing to bet all Senator's have missed days in the senate maybe not as much as Obama with his 130 days or over. I am willing to bet she would have made a good senator prior to being selected VP. And Obama was not elected nominee it was by acclamation because Nancy didn't want all of Hillary's delegates counted and Hillary should have told Nancy this is the way I want it, all my delegates counted and a roll call which she cancelled. Obama would never had done that for her. All of Hillary's women voters should vote for McCain/Palin to give Nancy Pelosi a good slap in the face.

Gail: Are you another one that's jealous because this woman accomplished a lot in her life at a young age. I think she will do fine as his VP and will match Obama or Biden. McCain already has the christian votes as stated on the internet. Palin will draw women to vote for McCain. Her background is cleaner than Obama's who dealt with crooks like Rezko, Wright, Farrakhan, Father P and Ayers. And he was involved with Nancy, Dean and Reid in changing the delegates so he would win the nomination. Obama is crooked and underhanded.

Dave in lv: A degree is one thing, its knowing how to use it and Obama didn't use it. He was too busy with as an attorney for a crook like Rezko who was making crooked deals and the reason Rezko bought that house for Obama is because Obama helped him cover his tracks. Obama is an underhanded crook himself. The reason he picked Biden is because Hillary was smarter than him and would outshine him in the white house. Obama needed someone with a big mouth but they both met their match with Palin. She will go head to head with them. She is a determined women.

NEXT: You said the right words. He didn't pick Hillary because he didn't want to be outshined by her and when Palin was chosen McCain dropped the bomb on them. They became frantic and his supporters are probably worried now. I believe she will do great and its time for a woman to be president or VP. This woman has experience in government and was mayor prior to that. Obama didn't accomplish anything in his time at the senate but be absent over 130 days. He kept saying Hillary voted for the war, so he picks Biden who also voted for the war. Obama was absent the day they voted so how could he say he was against it. Another one of his famous lies. McCain raised 7 million dollars after he chose Palin and he will raise more. I can't wait until November.

McCain/Palin2008: I see a lot of jealousy against this woman maybe what she accomplished they never will. Obama is no accomplishment for graduating from Harvard. His main thoughts were to make history like MLK. He was desperate to do that and wanted to draw crowds like MLK. He practiced his speeches and sometimes if you listen to him on the platform he trys to act like him. That last convention speech was taken from a speech of MLK. He just added a few words of his own. And if I am correct Biden was in trouble one time because of his mouth. And he can be very bold. But however, I think Palin can match him or Obama head to toe. McCain already has the christian voters. I read it on the internet and if I am correct again women voters will get to know her and like her. Hillary lost because of Obama, Nancy and Dean. The swindled her out of delegates, made deals with the superdelegates because Nancy did not want Hillary to become president. She wants to be the woman in power. But if McCain wins, Palin will be higher up than her.

Reference Lib: Obama has missed the senate over 130 times and I don't care what kind of degree he has he didn't avance that far with it. Palin advanced further than him at a young age. Obama was too busy associating with crooks like Rezko, Farrakhan, Wright, Father P and Ayers. He had it in mind to become president of this country years ago that's why he sabotaged the woman running against him, sabotaged Hillary with his pals Nancy, Dean and Reid because he is hungry to make history like MLK. He lives and breathes that day and night. He is this world's worst nitemare. This country would be in the biggest disaster ever if he is elected. The acceptance speech he made was taken from a speech of MLK. And you saying he is so smart. He always used other's to speak on the platform.

By comparison, Senator Obama who has a degree in international relations from Columbia University, who has worked on important issues such as nuclear non-proliferation in the Senate, and has assembled a formidable team of foreign policy advisors...
When Russia invaded Georgia BHO's first call was to say, tsk, tsk, both of you should stop fighting.
When Russia continued, BHO stated we needed to go to the UN Security Council to pass a resolution to get Russia to stop.
BHO didn't know Russia SITS on the Security Council. BHO didn't know Russia has always had VETO power over any resolution. This is UN 101 that high schoolers know!!!
After 72 hours BHO started mimicking JM's positions and has continued ever since.
Oh, but BHO's campaign did take credit for Russia stopping their attack because "they listened to BHO".
What a joke!!

JM has made a great choice for vp.
While Dems talk about promoting women JM has proven they can advance farther as Republicans. While Dems are consumed with race and sex, Reps look at their character.
If favorability ratings are a measure of how people perceive performance, JM has chosen the best governor in all 50 states!
Her 80-90% favorable rating with both Reps and Dems, her appointments of Dems to key positions and working with Dems to solve problems, her willingness to attack corruption whether or not they are in the same party is a breath of fresh air. Her fiscal conservatism and her accomplishment of greatly REDUCING the tax burden make Reps envious and Dems fearful.
The Reps are running on promises of what they will do and have a record of getting it done.
The Dems are running a campaign based on fear, false claims and talk without any track record.

It’s a cliché that a presidential candidate’s choice of a running mate is the first clue what kind of president she or he will be. Most of the time this really isn’t so. Not this time. John McCain’s choice of Governor Palin tells us quite bit. And frankly, it ought to scare the hell out of everybody.
First, it shows that Senator McCain has no core principles. None. Here’s a man who’s been running for President the last two years solely because of alleged superior credentials in foreign policy and national security. He used this argument not just against Senator Obama, but also against his rivals for the Republican nomination, Governors Huckabee and Romney and Mayor Giuliani, men with vastly more executive experience than he has. Over and over, he claimed that he’d make a better president because of years of service on congressional defense and foreign policy committees. A service, however, which never included actually formulating, deciding or executing policy. So who gets his first major appointment? A young governor with no experience in this area—or any of national issue—at all. By comparison, Senator Obama who has a degree in international relations from Columbia University, who has worked on important issues such as nuclear non-proliferation in the Senate, and has assembled a formidable team of foreign policy advisors, looks quite ready to start managing foreign policy from Day 1. And his Vice-President would have the experience, knowledge and character to tell him when he’s wrong. Would Vice-President Palin have that ability? Maybe, but I wouldn’t bet the house on that.
Second, what does this tell us about Senator McCain’s management style? He met Governor Palin once, for fifteen minutes at National Governors Association meeting, talked to her for five minutes on the phone, and then picks her for the second most important job in country. I’ve spent way more time selecting a junior member of my staff. Would you hire a guy as a CEO who makes decisions like that? Maybe if he was a genius with superb instincts, but if there’s any evidence that Senator McCain is such a leader, it’s hard to detect. Consider:
Until Joe Lieberman corrected him, he repeatedly stated that Iran was training Al Qaeda. In fact, Al Qaeda in Iraq slaughtered thousand of Iraqi Shiite Muslims. Iran is a Shiite Muslim country with intimate ties to Iraqi Shiite community. But of course, Senator McCain doesn’t know there’s difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, an elementary fact in Islamic politics for the past 1400 years. And what do we make of someone who thinks Czechoslovakia still exists or that Pakistan and Iraq share a common border?
Finally, let’s take a look at the politics of this decision. If Senator McCain wanted to select a woman as a running mate, he had plenty of choices. There were his economic advisors Carly Fiorina or Meg Whitman. There was Governor M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut, Governor Linda Lingle of Hawaii, or former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman. He could have picked Senators Collins or Snow of Maine, Liddy Dole, twice a cabinet secretary to boot, or Texas’s Kay Bailey Hutchison. So why did he decide on Governor Palin? Could it be because she has the strongest support among ardent social conservatives? That’s fine if you agree with hard line positions on abortion, gay rights and other contentious social issues. But if you’re a moderate then it’s pretty plain that Senator McCain doesn’t give a fig for your views or concerns.
So what can we expect from a President McCain based on this decision? A president who isn’t serious about governing, a president who with no rational system of decision making, a president with chronic confusion about basic facts in his area of claimed expertise, and a president who would do nothing to heal the country’s deep political wounds. I think we’ve seen this movie before.

There are plenty of reasons for questioning the selection of Palin. The "what does the VP do?" question is not one of them - it is in fact a question that neither Constitution, law, nor tradition fully answer, and a completely knowledgeable question for her to be asking McCain before taking the job. A fact which she knows, and which the full context of her statement makes clear.
Which raises yet another question. What is the point of having a self-proclaimed "reformer" in the VP slot? McCain can use her to masquerade as a Change ticket, then shut her down completely as soon as they get in the door. The selection is every bit as meaningless as it is foolish.

Palin is the only candidate in this election with experience actually running a government office. At least she has experience making a budget and going toe to toe with corruption and big oil companies. She went to work everyday making decisions.
How many votes did the "Senators" actually cast during there terms in office. I'm sure it didn't amount to someone going to work daily.

The Obama supporters are worried and I saw it at work on Friday. When it was announced the Mccain chose a woman the mood got depressing for the Obama supporters. They had frowns on their faces the entire day because they new that their boy wonder just lost the election for not choosing Hillary. For a guy to be educated by one of the top law schools in the world is not a very bright man.

ORDER SAID:
There is already something about her sister and brother-in-law. She came into the election with dirt.

Actually, that is not corruption. Corruption is Obama and the people he associates with. That is all you can got on her?? Knowing her background, I am sure she had a good reason to fire the loser, Obama has miles of skeletions in his closet.

Do you really believe that savvy women voters will vote for McCain just because he selected a female running mate? The answer is a big ten no my friends. Palin does not support a woman's right to chose. She is Hillary Clinton-lite.
Hillary was kicked around for eight years by Republicans and would have been trashed this time but they wanted to create a divide in the Democratic party. But. It. Won't. Work. I think Republicans need to be concerned about what is going to happen with Bob Barr and Ron Paul in the mix.

It's a gimmick, folks! John McCain is willing to take a reckless risk with our future just to get elected .... or maybe to get back at the Reps who wouldn't let him have Joe Lieberman. He met the woman ONE time before offering her the job, so even HE doesn't know if she's qualified or if she's someone he can get along with. -- This selection is an insult to all women (thinking we'd vote for an anti-choice, inexperienced person who doesn't believe in climate change, wants to drill in ANWAR and kills animals from helicopters ... just because she's a woman). It's also an insult to the many well-qualified Republicans, both men and women, who for some reason weren't "good enough" for McCain. I seriously think he's losing it. --- Even if you believe Obama is as inexperienced, there are 19 million Americans who think he's just fine. The only vote of confidence she's won is from one old man with a penchant for beauty queens (first wife, Cindy and now Gov. Palin). -- Look for some of the interviews as recently as last month, even she was laughing at the idea of being VP!!!

obama man:
Thanks for reminding me:
"Oh, I forgot, George didn't actually win either election, but you get the point). "
STILL ANOTHER WAY IN WHICH OBAMA
MIMICKS BUSH!

I'm interested in hearing more about how she left the budget of Wasilla in shambles when she left her post as mayor. She has no savy whatsoever and a totally inadequate education. Clearly, she likes to crawl off to the holes of the world and be "in charge" so she can abuse her power in petty local squabbles. The national press is going to make a chew-toy out of her.
