In response to my reference earlier today to Sen. Obama's seemingly tremendous self-regard, some writers have asked if that isn't de rigueur for politicians. And I agree, 100%.

Sen. McCain has a hugely healthy ego as well, of course. While Obama's is criticized as coolly arrogant, McCain's is assailed as blindly self-righteous.

This reminded me that almost 10 years ago (yikes!) I did an NPR commentary about how those who think they should be President have egos so enormous, the decision to run for the office should be in itself a disqualification.

keep in mind John McCain was against off shore drilling himself until recently
it really is the nature of politics for positions to change gee maybe McCain will say something about a timetable to get out of Iraq

not a fool:

"He isn't being criticed for his ambition. He is being criticized for his arrogance. How many candidates have created their own presidential seal? It's breathtaking."

________

and THEN... to add madness to Obama's egomaniacal tendencies, he has the audacity to question as racist the placement of his big head... and ears.. on a hundred dollar bill?

HE STARTED this shenanigan by portraying this self same image on the Presidential Seal!!!!!

What's sauce for the goose... should be
sauce for the gander.

I think he should be delighted that McCain was gracious to pose him on a C-note!

@kat: "Right, Len, no one is his or her right mid would want to be president."

True. Just the campaign is turning Obama gray. Soon he will look like McCain.

But I think no spouse in their right mind would want their spouse to win. And now the Clinton bashers have a wonderful opening free. Jib away.

Nita:

And, what about your man Obama changing his policy about off shore drilling when McCain was hammering him about it? He's a huge flip flopper too and it makes perfect sense because he hangs around with the likes of that turd John Kerry! I'm sorry I ever voted for him now! So, don't be so quick to point your finger at McCain for being a flip flopper when your man goes any way the wind blows! His ego is larger than the entire USA. He really thinks he quite something. All I can say is that any woman who would vote for him after what he said about Hillary Clinton is insane. And, please don't tell me how the Dems are better than the Rep towards women! If the Dems allowed Obama to treat Hillary in such a sexist manner, what difference does it really make who you vote for. The Dems are supposed to treat women differently because we have been such huge supporters of their party and they allowed Obama to treat Hillary Clinton in such a sexist manner. All I can say, if Obama is elected, I will no longer ever vote for a Democrat unless there is woman who I believe in. Otherwise, I will be voting straight Republican for the rest of the my life! I am so done with the inept Democratic party! They're a joke!

Typo: not mid, MIND!

"The only people qualified are the people who don 't want the job."

Right, Len, no one is his or her right mid would want to be president.

All politicians have BIG egos. They think they can run our lives better than we can. Almost none can top Pelosi and Reed's egos since they got control of congress. Pelosi is trying to save the planet. She and Reed think they know what is better for America -- even though the majority (65-75%) think we ought to drill for more oil to keep our money here in America.

Since the Democrats took control of congress --- nothing has been accomplished. What happened to the "first 100 days" pledge????

As for Obama -- let him have his vacation in Hawaii. He can wear his flip-flops there and remind himself how much he has flip-flopped his positions on the issues.

Back to Catch-22. The only people qualified are the people who don't want the job.

"There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle."
"That's some catch, that catch-22," he observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

Obama's arrogance is a mask of his lack of confidence in his own abilities and the positions he take.

Posted by: Julian | Aug 7, 2008 12:56:04 AM

Obama's ego is "cooly arrogant?" I've never heard an ego description like that. It's more a personality characteristic and it really doesn't fit. Obama most assuredly wouldn't have lasted long in grassroots community organizing if that were the case. And there's no cool arrogance whatsoever in the way he jumps into and mingles with the crowds in his present campaigning.

Posted by: kat | Aug 7, 2008 12:31:28 AM

Obama may look young but his brain like an old alzheimer guy... he keeps change his policies.... he may look young but he has broke hip.

Posted by: lisa | Aug 7, 2008 12:11:11 AM

One of the reason's Obama's ego sticks out is because he is trying too hard. I mean everyone can spot his "presidental" pose, you know the one the one he makes after a pause after he speaks and gets applause the tilt of his head upwards nose in the air then the quick and side to side motion of his head to the left and the right. He also is trying to copy history and not make his own.

A President who has little to no regard for the Constitution and the basic mores of civilization regarding unprovoked attacks is indeed hard to endure.

"Obama has accomplished NOTHING of significance in his life."

Over at NRO's The Corner, there's a blogger saying "Obama is a very skilled campaigner, among the best we've ever seen."

Well that's actually what we need. The problem (and this is what Obama's been running against) is that we can't get anything constructive done--in short, because of Republican BS and obstructionism. Because of Republican BS, we have a war in Iraq, with thousands of Americans killed and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed. Then we have the Republican BS on climate change, energy policy, health care, social security, foreign policy, torture--it just doesn't end. So if we have a skilled politician who can deal with these things, cut through the GOP BS screen and motivate people to do something about them--then yes, he will have some people coming in enthusiastically to help him do that. It's not because he's a "celebrity," it's because people actually *care* about these things and want to do something about them.

BTW, Obama did have some accomplishments as a state senator. And as a community organizer--he obviously learned something because his skills are on display now.

Posted by: JJ | Aug 6, 2008 9:19:25 PM

I don't see the arrogance. He certainly doesn't have an arrogant foreign policy posture--it's quite different from McCain's continued arrogant posture and what the people of the US and the world have endured over the last 8 years.

I think this is Obama is arrogant meme is just a Republican talking point.

Posted by: Danny | Aug 6, 2008 8:36:56 PM

Jake,

But you have to see the degrees of arrogance/self-regard. Obama has accomplished NOTHING of significance in his life (ok, aside from beating Hillary in the primaries). No major academic/scholarly publications. No major legislation passed. No real achievement on the South Side of Chicago.

And yet he acts like he's full of great achievements. Certainly McCain thinks highly of himself, but it shows less and he has more on his resume.

Can you imagine if the situation were reversed, McCain opposed the surge but Obama supported it? We'd have everyone saying he's a military strategy genius, himself included I'm sure.

Reading through some of the comments in this thread... it seems like it might be time to start talking about Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Posted by: JJ | Aug 6, 2008 7:44:46 PM

Obama's ego is so huge it makes the other politicians' egos look like an inferiority complex. I can't remember when I've seen anyone as full of himself as Obama.

Posted by: marylou | Aug 6, 2008 7:41:22 PM

Nonsense.

Egos are one thing, but Obama's ego goes nuclear.

It was Michelle Obama who said that Obama would fix our "souls." It was Michelle Obam who referred to him as the "savior."

That's quite the beginning.

Obama's seat says "President." He conducted himself as the President in Europe.

As I said, nonsense.

Posted by: drjohn | Aug 6, 2008 7:07:43 PM

If they both have tremendous self-regard, then why does the media constantly talk about Obama's ego but not McCain's? Possibly because Republicans constantly push the talking point and no one in the media bothers to point out the hypocrisy involved in that?
