Barack's Salad Days

August 22, 2008 12:08 AM

Earlier today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., launched a new attack against Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, on his curious non-answer on how many homes he and his wife have.  Tonight, in Chesapeake, Va., Obama recalled his more modest circumstances a few years ago.

"I have been truly blessed over the last few years – it hasn’t been a long time," Obama said. " I mean, before I wrote this book, or before this book started selling about four years ago, you know we were living in a condo. Myself, Michelle and our two girls.

"And we, you know, had two cars, but one of them was kind of beat up and we didn’t have a garage so you’d have to, in Chicago you gotta shovel your car out of the snow and scrape the ice," Obama continued. "And we didn’t know how we were going to afford college education for our kids ‘cause we had been paying down student loans for ten years between the two of us....

"Now we’re blessed," Obama said. "So the idea that I have to pay the same tax rate as the waitress over at Shoney’s who’s making maybe $16, 18, 20,000 a year – when the truth is that the extra 2% or 3% that I’m paying by rolling the Bush tax cuts – I won’t really notice, but for her, would allow to her get an extra $1,000 or $1500 or $2000 that would allow her to maybe buy a new coat for her kids or to get a new computer that they could work on."

Zaggs, if your problem is that the share of federal income tax the top earners have to pay is too high, there is an extremely easy solution to that problem.
They should pay their employees more and take a lower pay for themselves.

That way, their share of the federal income tax goes down and the share of lower income earners goes up. Problem solved.

The problem is the incredible increase of the income gap in the last decade, especially under Bush. That gap has reached levels only seen just before the Depression.

Is the topic of individual tax rates too deep? One more chance, do you or do you not advocate higher taxes for the upper income bracket? If so, why, how much higher, and how does that meld with our founding father's intentions?

Llama, What I said was the share of federal income tax the top earners pay has gone up. in 2006 the top 1% of wage earners paid 39.9 of all fed income taxes. In 2004 they paid 36.9%. That would be an increase of 3% Sorry if the facts got in the way of your argument.

Inquisitor.

We already have corporate socialism.

To the poor we say: "Get a job!" To Wall Street we say: "How much do you need?"

Exactly why do you want to take more money away from those that have succeeded, cincy? You don't think they're taxed enough now or what? You don't agree with the founding fathers?

Are you an advocate for socialism? What makes you believe that wealthy people's money belongs to someone else?

Posted by: Inquisitor | Aug 22, 2008 12:59:09 PM

It is interesting that being "blessed" means, to Sen. Obama, having more money!

Posted by: tina "blessed means more money?" | Aug 22, 2008 12:55:11 PM

What about Obama's brother George who lives in a grass hut and survives off of $1 dollar a month? Think the blessed Messiah could give his own brother a measly hundred bucks now and then?

Obama scares those who want to maintain the status quo because for them, times aren't that hard. They've gotten "drunk" under the Bush administration. For them, Obama's tax plan is pretty sobering.

McCain's tax cut for the rich (above 2.87 million): -4.4%.
Obama's tax increase for the rich (above 2.87 million): +11.5%

Obama's tax cut for the poor (up to 18,981): -5.5%.
McCain's tax cut for the poor (up to 18,981: -0.2%

Most of Obama's tax cuts go to those making under $66k, or 60% of taxpayers.

More money in the pockets of middle and lower income earners will be spent here in the U.S. More money in the pockets of the wealthy will go wherever they want it to go.

Someone not running for president is a partial owner of a legal beer distribution company. BO used and distributed cocaine on the streets.

You be the judge.

That's a touching story there Barack. Now why don't you put your words into action and help support your half brother who lives in poverty. It will only take $20/month to improve his life greatly. Maybe cut down on your arugala to balance it off.

Posted by: JA | Aug 22, 2008 11:37:41 AM

Truth is Cindy McCain, owns a beer distribution company that has engaged in lobbying. As senator McCain has recused himself from alcohol issues, but as president he wouldn't be able to.

The company has opposed such groups as Mothers Against Drunk Driving in fighting proposed federal rules requiring alcohol content information on every package of beer, wine and liquor.

Its executives, including John McCain's son Andrew, have written at least 10 letters in recent years to the Treasury Department, have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to a beer industry political action committee, and hold a seat on the board of the politically powerful National Beer Wholesalers Assn.

Hensley has run afoul of health advocacy groups that have tried to rein in appeals to young drinkers. For example, the company distributes caffeinated alcoholic drinks that public health groups say put young and underage consumers at risk by disguising the effects of intoxication.

"As an advocate for children's health care needs, Cindy founded and ran the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT) from 1988 to 1995. AVMT provided emergency medical and surgical care to impoverished children throughout the world. Cindy led 55 medical missions to third world and war-torn countries during AVMT's seven years of existence. On one of those missions to Mother Teresa's orphanage, Cindy was convinced to take two babies in need of medical attention to the United States. One of those babies is now their adopted daughter, 16-year-old Bridget McCain.

In recent years, three organizations in particular have been the subject of her international focus: HALO, Operation Smile, and CARE.

As a member of the Board of Trustees for the HALO Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to landmine removal and weapons destruction in war-torn countries, Cindy has traveled to numerous countries to see firsthand the impact HALO has had by removing landmines. She recently returned from her second visit to Cambodia. She has also traveled to Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Angola.

Cindy also serves on the Board of Directors for Operation Smile, a non-profit organization whose mission is to repair cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities for children around the world. Since 1982, Operation Smile has provided free reconstructive surgery to more than 100,000 children and young adults in 25 countries. Cindy has assisted on volunteer missions to Morocco, India, and Vietnam. She is scheduled to return to Vietnam on another mission during the summer of 2008."

Angie, please post Michelle's resume. Thanks in advance.

Angie -

Back to Cindy again -- stealing drugs, but Obama using and selling street drugs is OK? Like I said before, Cindy isn't running for President -- Obama is.

Cindy never worked as teacher - I admit I don't know if that is true or not, but she has donated money and done lot of charitable work as mentioned in previous posts by Peach.

Posted by: susie | Aug 22, 2008 10:44:05 AM

so why do the Obama have most of their investments in TAX-FREE bonds?

Posted by: geevill | Aug 22, 2008 10:42:48 AM

Media narrative-wrong about Obama's trip overseas and wrong about this house nonsense.

Posted by: geevill | Aug 22, 2008 10:41:10 AM

Angie -

What is really scary is Obama can't stand up to Nutty Nancy Pelosi or Panty waist Harry Reid. How is going to stand up to Putin and Terriosts?

"oh please, oh please, Mr. Terriost be our friend."

Obama wants to redribute wealth -- he is a Communist.

Posted by: susie | Aug 22, 2008 10:38:52 AM

Yes, Susie - You are correct. At least one of McCain's kids work for the foundation. And two of his kids are in the military and he's very close to them.

Contrast that with Obama thinking it was a good idea for his young children to listen to the anti-white, anti-American racist rantings of Rev. Wright. Talk about poor judgment!

Posted by: Peach | Aug 22, 2008 10:34:23 AM

Susie - LOL. Very good. And so true.

Posted by: Peach | Aug 22, 2008 10:33:05 AM

John McCain's children from his first Marriage do speak to him. I believe on of them works for the Henley family.

Posted by: susie | Aug 22, 2008 10:32:39 AM

you can't even admit you were caught lying that Cindy McCain never worked a day in her life.

You know, if you have to lie to push your agenda or candidate, it says an awful lot about you and doesn't promote your candidate one iota. But carry on -- the more you talk the more amusing you become.
