Before Skeptical Crowd in Iowa, Obama Works It, Promises to Eat Fattening Local Specialty

August 25, 2008 3:21 PM

At the Mississippi Valley fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa, today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, faced a rather unenthusiastic crowd including 200 undecided Republican and independent voters.

Obama was introduced by a Randy Wehrman, a Republican insurance salesman from Le Claire, Iowa, whose first vote for president was for Richard Nixon and whose last two votes were for George W. Bush.  Wehrman is now supporting Obama, who reminded the crowd that this evening former Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, co-chair of "Republicans for Obama," will speak at the Democratic convention in Denver.

Illustrating just how eager Obama was to win over the crowd, Obama at one point reached out to a voter's skeptical husband via telephone.

Cynthia Freidhof, who with her husband Ron owns Ross's restaurant in Bettendorf, Iowa, stood to invite Obama -- known as a healthy, if not finnicky, eater -- to eat a "Magic Mountain" sandwich at Ross's.

The Magic Mountain is Texas toast grilled, loose steamed hamburger meat, homemade hash browns, and french fries, all topped with cheddar cheese sauce (A volcano version includes chili and jalapenos).

"Whoooo!” Obama said after she described the dish, asking  if it came with antacids.

Freidhof said her husband is on the fence about whom to support, concerned as he is about Obama's positions on small business.

“Let’s call him," Obama said. "No, I’m not kidding. I’ll answer the question and then we’ll talk to him on the phone."

Obama talked about his position on small business while Freidhof called her husband, who was on his lunch hour.

“Hey Ron, I’ve got Barack on the phone," she said.

Obama took the phone., “Hey Ron? Your wife told me that you might vote for me but I’ve gotta do a little work because you’re concerned whether I’ve got good plans for small business," he said.

"Well, I know it’s in the middle of lunch hour so I don’t want to interrupt you too much, but I’m gonna give your wife all the answers to (her) questions and then if we need to follow up, you and I can talk later, alright?" Obama continued. "How’s lunch hour? Alright, I gotta try out one of these Magic Mountains, that’s what I was told. OK, talk to you soon. Bye bye.”

Friedhof later said she was sold on Obama but her husband, who has almost always voted Republican,  likely had more questions.

She doubted Obama would ever eat a Magic Mountain, she said. "I know the guy doesn't like to eat that," she said.

The speech wasn't focusing only on Ross' Resturant. It was focusing on what the American people need and that is change. Randy Wehrman spent the whole weekend at the hospital because his wife Beth is in her last stages of cancer. The doctors let her out for a few hours to hear Randy introduce Barrack Obama.

There is a special bond between the two who met last year. Beth fighting to stay alive, because she is a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother, friend and a service provider to our community and Barack who had all the odds stacked up against him. Beth along with Barrack has had a tough fight on their hands this year. Beth probably won't win due to the statistic of her type of cancer, but Obama will!

That would be good enough for Beth who is a huge supporter of Obama and helped make others in our town of LeClaire aware of Obama's opportunity for change.

Health insurance is something that needs to change. Other families are also struggling to make up the out of pocket expenses each year. Then when we do get our out of pocket expense paid our insurance company will say you can't do this unless you are at this stage or level. You actually have to become sicker before they can make you better anymore.

Wehrman's have a hospice nurse come twice a week for Beth. It's all the insurance will allow. Randy and his family do all the rest. I can't imagine anyone better than Randy Wehrman who now is fighting early stages of prostate cancer, that could have introduced Barrack Obama any better.

Belle Starr -

Why yes, yes there are quite a few Democrats in Le Claire, Iowa. In fact my mother, Wehrman's wife, is one of them. Wehrman is an independent insurance agent, selling Property Casualty Insurance. He gets ripped on his taxes as a self employed individual, and this has only gotten WORSE in the last 8 years with the Republicans in office. All this talk of increased taxes with Obama is hooey. It's a distraction from the real issues. Furthermore, ABC didn't also report that Wehrman has prostate cancer and his wife, my mother, has pancreatic cancer. Where is the $ for cancer research when we are spending trillions in Iraq?? Iraq will carry over a massive surpluss next year, yet we are dumping our $ into their economy, while our own country is experiencing economic uncertainty.

By the way, I was at the rally, and the crowd was not unenthusiastic. They were attentive and ready to hear what Obama had to say. Most of them were older individuals - not really the whooping and hollering sort.

The Obama staff asked my father to speak because he has been a faithful republican voter - never straying from the party until now. He recognizes change is something we desperately need, and he shared his experiences with other undecided independents and Republicans.

So, please keep your condescending diatribes to yourself. If you feel America is better off electing McCain and subjecting this country to more of the same, go for it. But don't pretend to understand the road others of us are traveling, or insult the integrity of a man's profession. He has 4 children and worked 2 jobs - essentially all night and all day- while he launched his business. He paid for 4 college educations and we all came out debt free. He is not wealthy - just an American trying to take care of his family and hopes to be able to retire someday. Sound familiar? He is striving for the American dream.

Sammy,
Does McCain ever say anything that's really relative to the people? All I hear is " I was a POW" & "Drill NOW!"
Well we all know he was a POW and the fact that he contiues to sling that around is getting OLD already just like he is. He accused Obama of playing the "Race Card" so he is playing the "POW CARD". As for "Drill Now", what he forgets to mention is that BIG OIL is the one that stands to benefit from this the most, not the American people. We won't even see any impact for 5-7 years, long after he drops and his VP took over and then lost re-election!!

"Obama was introduced by a Randy Wehrman, a Republican insurance salesman from Le Claire, Iowa ... "
-----
But of COURSE he was! Let him make it perfectly C-l-a-i-r-e with geographic word games (yesterday, the presumptive nominee materialized in EAU Claire.

Is there not a Democrat IN Le Claire?

What KIND of insurance does Wehrman sell, you gotta wonder ...

(Is there something cargo cult-y about all the flying around? Why can't the candidates just ride a circuit on the train, beginning with the primaries -- it would save a lot of motorcades and a zillion gallons of petro products, and the rulers of the world could get a feeling for living ... nowhere.)

The Magic Mountain is probably a spin off of the SOS, popularized during World War II. SOS means **** on a shingle. A shame one must obscure historical trivia because of a filtering device which is overly vigilant.

Posted by: kat | Aug 25, 2008 8:14:52 PM

Umm Obama's website explains his tax plan in detail, the only "small" business owners who would face new taxes are the ones who PROFIT over $250,000 a year, less than 5% of all US small busineses.

Who needs facts when you can attack from ignorance?

Posted by: feckless | Aug 25, 2008 7:52:31 PM

You GOP shills are pathetic. Your party is wildly successful at ONE thing:

Massive failure.

Obama an elitist? Here's the definition of elitist, tools: A guy who can't remember how many houses he owns and takes a nine car motorcade to Starbucks. While wearing 500 dollar shoes.

That would be McCain, by the way.

You people deserve to be mocked, ostracized, and shunned.

Great point, Wendy.

Why does this place breed Republican concern trolls? Worse than that sandwich.

Posted by: Junah Lee | Aug 25, 2008 7:19:00 PM

Why would anyone think that a prepared speech would be what Michelle REALLY thinks. Wern't the ones that she gave off the cuff more true to her heart?

Posted by: Wendy | Aug 25, 2008 6:28:32 PM

As usual, all slogans and no solutions.

Posted by: Hopey / Dopey '08 | Aug 25, 2008 6:14:28 PM

What?? Only 200 people in Obama's audience today?

Must not be any rock concerts in or around Davenport today..............

Posted by: SandyB | Aug 25, 2008 5:46:29 PM

Okay, if Obama doesn't eat the sandwich, won't that be proof that he says what people want to hear?

Posted by: Wade | Aug 25, 2008 5:21:15 PM

BKMC:

Your post "To the contrary, McSame is having all types of cancers and his presidency will be a sick presidency in many ways. God save America from McSame."

Ridiculous. McCain's cancer stems directly from 5+ years in the sun when he was held prisoner.

And I wouldn't talk too much about health issues if I were you. Your guy's VP has had major, major health issues.

Posted by: Peach | Aug 25, 2008 4:45:43 PM

Too bad this guy will be out of business in a couple years if Obama is elected. Taxes kill!

Posted by: D'Obama | Aug 25, 2008 4:33:03 PM

He should have tried the sandwich. I'm sure it's better than the crow he's going to eat in November.

Posted by: Brad | Aug 25, 2008 4:21:34 PM

As long as the put arugula on it.

Posted by: Christopher | Aug 25, 2008 4:17:35 PM

People making such personal nasty comments against Either candidates- are the inferior ones- lacking in integrity and probably unsuccessful in their own jobs. The remarks tell more about them, than the candidates they target.

Posted by: DCMata | Aug 25, 2008 4:04:54 PM

Aside from the horrors exhibited by the Obama Campaign two weeks ago over the fact that small business (all business) does not pay income tax on gross revenue, what exactly will a Obama administration do for small business besides increase taxes?

Does he ever say anything of substance?

Posted by: smith | Aug 25, 2008 4:00:49 PM

i grew up in bettendorf, iowa. he's missing out if he doesn't go get the magic mountain. this is making me hungry for one right now...

Posted by: tuffy | Aug 25, 2008 3:59:42 PM

tbone, I sure would if he were running for President.

Posted by: Sammy | Aug 25, 2008 3:58:41 PM

" I respect that he comes into enemy territory, and he did address all of the questions asked because my husband was there"

Just like Ron's question was "answered" I'll bet.

Posted by: Sammy | Aug 25, 2008 3:57:38 PM

Hey Sammy...Are you holding Bush to that same scrutiny?

Posted by: tbone | Aug 25, 2008 3:55:57 PM

as an independent republican not for Obama yet I respect that he comes into enemy territory, and he did address all of the questions asked because my husband was there

Healthy eating is what will make Obama's presidency a unique one, a healthier one and one which will help fight against obesity and all chronic non-communicable diseases. Leading by example that is what Obama will do. To the contrary, McSame is having all types of cancers and his presidency will be a sick presidency in many ways. God save America from McSame.

Posted by: BKMC | Aug 25, 2008 3:49:41 PM

LOL! Yet another example how this Faustian Obama will do and say, and now eat, anything to get what he wants. I would have loved to see O's face in front of this "unenthusiastic" crowd; the poor guy is so used to his followers fawning and fainting about him, it must have busted his mammoth ego to see them all tepid. Go back to Denver Obama, where you bussed in all your supporters to fill Invesco and keep the real voters out. He is so afraid of anyone chanting Hillary when he is up on stage!

Posted by: decentAmerican | Aug 25, 2008 3:42:49 PM

Love to see Obama groveling! "A rather unenthusiastic crowd" indeed.

Posted by: marylou | Aug 25, 2008 3:40:44 PM

Sammy Good Point, there is no answer to the question? Got to love this con-mans work.
He will not eat the food either, see it is not good enough for an elitist!!

Remember Kerry who would not eat in a restaurant he visited, but went to his bus and ate Fillet Mignon.
Same for Obama - Elitist through and through!

Posted by: spock | Aug 25, 2008 3:38:00 PM

The "Biden" sandwich: old stale bread you temporarily "revive" with the microwave. Top with hormel (working class) olive loaf, cool whip and mustard. Serve with Obama brand no-flavor non-cheese-cheese puffs.

Posted by: Sammy | Aug 25, 2008 3:36:36 PM

The "Magic Mountain" sounds like a variation of the famous "Horseshoe" open-faced sandwich served in and around Springfield, IL: it's comprised of toast, your choice of meat on top(hamburger, sliced ham, or roast beef being three popular selections), French fries scattered over the meat, and everything smothered in cheddar cheese sauce. It's a great sandwich, but definitely not low-cal!

Posted by: chuck | Aug 25, 2008 3:30:42 PM

Even one-on-one Obama can't find a way to actually SAY anything. Does he EVER actually voice a concrete opinion or position?
