Ferraro Happy About Palin, Won't Reveal for Whom She's Voting

August 31, 2008 8:32 PM

Former vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro told National Public Radio's Jacki Lyden that she was happy to see Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- who mentioned Ferraro in her remarks Friday -- on the GOP ticket.

"For 24 years I've been saying, 'It's great to be the first, but y'know, I don't want to be the only,'" Ferraro said. "And so now it is wonderful to see a woman on a national ticket."

Ferraro said "this election to me is important" because "one way or another we're going to see a historic first."

She said she spoke to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to wish him a happy birthday -- Ferraro's birthday was earlier this week, she turned 73 -- and she told McCain to give Palin her congratulations.

"He said, 'Why don't you speak to her?'" Ferraro recounted. So she did. "She was very, very nice and I do congratulate her."

Ferraro defended Palin from charges that the Alaska governor -- who got her first passport last year -- doesn't have enough foreign policy experience.

"What she doesn't know she will learn very quickly, she seems smart enough," Ferraro said.

As for whom Ferraro will vote, the former congresswoman from Queens, N.Y., said, "I'm like one of you people, I'm sitting here working on my, on my decision. Y'know I'm a Democrat and I am a person who feels very strongly about issues that are facing this country so when I go into the booth I will make my decision."

Just a bit of early evidence of my theory....

Palin fudged three big points in her acceptance speech... but the press gave her a pass.

#1: She claimed that she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere. In fact, she was upset about it... but only because she didn't get enough money from the feds. And, she sure didn't give the money back once she had it.

#2: She claims to have extensive "commander-in-chief" experience as governor of Alaska. It's basically like being an "Assistant Manager" at Wendy's and telling everyone that you have a white collar job.

#3: She referenced Hillary's fight to break through the glass ceiling. Months ago she called Hillary a "whiner" for fighting so hard.

Any other candidate would have to answer these... but the press treats her with kid gloves because she's cute. And that is not a step forward for women... it's a step backward. Women in politics are called to be every bit as smart and accountable as men.

I am a dem voting for McCain/Palin -- I know this drives the sexist dems on the orange site crazy -- but it's true. And oh by the way, Joe Biden -- what a dolt -- what a dunce.

This primary has revealed DNC "leadership" to be corrupt, mean-spirited, and lacking respect for basic democratic principles.

They have completely and effectively ceded the moral high ground to Republicans at this point.

1. We have seen the race card played, with assistance from both Dean and Brazile.
2. We have seen rampant sexism with no objection by the DNC.
3. We have seen the superdelegates endorse as quid-pro-quo for campaign contributions.
4. We have seen arm-twisting of the congressional delegates by "neutral" Nancy Pelosi to declare for Obama.
5. We have seen an unabashed ageism campaign against John McCain, calling him "confused", and that he has "lost his bearings".
6. We've seen a softening of support for the gay and lesbian community.
7. We've seen caucus cheating.
8. We've seen intimidation of Hillary supporters, hack attacks and coordinated threats against voters and media that dare to dissent.
9. We've seen manipulation of the party nominating system and media to favor one candidate over another and the outright redistribution of votes cast for one Hillary and given to Obama.
This is now a democratic party in name only.

Thank God for McCain's choice..............

What's the best way to honor Hillary's historic run for President?

Appoint a pretty young beauty queen with a thin resume.

No offense, but I doubt McCain's abilities. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen hard-working, intelligent, and tough women get passed up for promotion, usually by a gross old boss.

Pretty women get graded more sympathetically, get more job offers, get more second chances, people treat them more gently, are promoted more quickly, etc. (This fact is proven time and time again, in study after study.)

Looks aren't an indicator of smarts or character... but if I am looking to hire someone, the last thing you want is someone who hasn't had to prove their competence. And a heavier person with humble looks usually has to fight a lot harder or have a lot more raw talent to get beyond the first interview.

O JOAN:

Yes, I am a McCain Democrat from MA who regrets voting for Kennedy,Kerry and Duval. These traitors mistreated Hillary and should be punished for promoting an inexperienced uncle tom called Obama who is now shamelessly being promoted by the likes of Chris Matthews and the MSM biased media (NBC, MSNBC and CNN). Yes I have watched FOXNews. They really seem more fair and balanced. I am also happy with ABCNews and CBSNews. It is MSNBC that make me PUKE big time.

Watch out for MA going for McCain. That is the water cooler discussion here in the suburbs.

Yesterday , on "THis Week" I heard Kerry say Obama is more qualified than Palin on foreign policy because he made a trip thi ssummer to Europe. He was ranting like a mad dog and I felt sorry for my ex democratic friends

LOL, Palin is about as ready to fill the presidents shoes as I am to fill Mike Tysons shoes.

Ferraro represents the worst of American politics. She has a stiflingly narrow agenda and an obvious ax to grind. Strikingly similar to John McCain who is still trying somehow to win in VietNam. It's no coincidence that they are both in their 70's. It's called hardening of the categories.

There are a number of issues that keep me from voting McCain/Palin but these are a top three - a woman's right to choose, creationism taught in public schools, and a military draft. If they get elected, I'm packed and ready to move to Canada and I'll be happy to leave you fools to deal with the disaster of a "free" country in the hands of the republicans.

Who cares about how she will vote, all I know is that, maccain is out of his mind, is like when Bush sr pick Thamos thinking that will please blacks, he got it wrong.

my grandfathers built this country.
Sarah is the only one who can get us back on track.

Go Sarah Go!

my family and all my friends will vote for you and John

Fellow Americans - VOTE Sarah IN.....we need a woman to clean things up. She has proven that already.

I am sick of this Obama nonsense

Posted by: TOOTSIE | Sep 1, 2008 9:25:49 AM

vs ---it's hard to beleive you are a Democrat. First, have you ever watched Fox? I don't think the Democrats have a hold on the mainstream media. MSNBC actually has real Republicans like Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan as pundits.
And if you were a true Democrat you wouldn't feel comfortable voting for a party that is anti-union, against equal pay for women, against healthcare for children, against benefits for our veterans, and is happy to give corporations big tax breaks, even if they take their good paying jobs out of this country.

Posted by: Joan | Sep 1, 2008 9:22:08 AM

Obama sends a chill up Chris Matthews leg and Palin sends a chill among the general american public. The race between the corrupt MSM media (NBC,MSNBC and CNN) against the people has begun....

Leiberman (2000)and now Ferraro (1984), both VP candidates for Democrats supporting McCain. Where is the new AD coming ??

It's strange that when a democrat actually thinks about who and why they are voting for someone, instead of just pulling a lever without any regard as to what damage they are causing. They get attacked.

This leads me to believe that if you are a democrat you are prohibited from doing any creative thinking on your own for fear of being kicked out of the party.

Sadly, it looks like sexism is alive and well and well received by many in this country. Even Biden said yesterday at a campaign stop how " good looking she is." It's not acceptable to bring this up- racial comments along the same lines would not be tolerated yet many seem to think it's ok to talk about Palin's looks. It's not!! This is the future of our country -she may have participated in beauty contest before , but this is not a beauty contest. It is very serious business- you should base your voting decision on the issues and which candidate shares your values.

Still waiting for Howard Dean to be a real leader of the Democratic Party and stop this nonsense. It was not ok to treat Hillary in that manner and it's not ok to say such against Palin.

The Democrats have controlled both houses of Congress for almost three years. The economic downturn occurred during their watch so they need to take some ownership of the current state of affairs. If the Democratic leadership is truly as brilliant as they keep telling everyone they are, they have had ample opportunity to do some of the wonderful things they've been promising in this campaign. All words, no action.

mikey: the GDP grew by over 3% last quarter, oh yeah thats like the great depressin...only to people who have to lie to take power. you can't explain any of your positions, or go beyond talking points, as is typical for a liberal democrat. Since you are for abortion, why do you call yourself catholic, when the position of the church is clear?

the democrats have been running congress the last 2 years, and they promised to bring gas prices down, and instead they've doubled! thats democratic results for you. and obama is only sorry they didn't go up a little slower, so people wouldn't be upset...thats democrat 'compassion' for ya!!

The Democratic party today is anything but democratic and certainly doesn't believe in freedom of speech. Witness the way the mean spirited way they've treated Ralph Nader and Geraldine Ferraro for speaking their minds. Voters would be smart to elect a Republican to the White House because no one party can be trusted when it has control of the Senate, House and Executive Branch.

Posted by: Asia2PA | Sep 1, 2008 8:42:40 AM

t..I think you have a touch of amnesia. The Republicans have been running this country for the last 8 years. The first 6 years of George Bush's presidency he had a Republican Congress. The Republicans are responsible for the horrendous state this country is in. 80% of Americans agree that we're on the wrong track. The people in charge of the train wreck are the Republicans.
