Focus On The Family Pulls Video (Jokingly) Asking Supporters to Pray for Rain During Obama's Speech

August 13, 2008 8:12 AM

"Would it be wrong to ask people to pray for rain?" asks Stuart Shepard, director of digital media the political arm of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, Focus Action, in this video.

"Not just rain," Shepard clarifies, "abundant rain, torrential ran, urban-and-small-stream-advisory rain."

When would this rain come?

"The evening of August 28 right here at Mile High stadium in Denver," so as to ruin Sen. Barack Obama's plans to accept the Democratic presidential nomination.

"I'm talking-umbrellas-ain't-gonna-help-you rain," Shepard says. "Not flood-people-out-of-their-houses rain, just good ol' swamp-the-intersection rain...network-cameras-can't-see-the podium rain."

Why?

"I'm still pro life, and I'm still in favor of marriage as being between one man and one woman," Shepard explains. "And I would like the next president who will select justices for the next Supreme Court to agree."

After some members of the organization complained about the video, which was supposed to be humorous, the organization took it off their website.

The Shepard call for prayer wasn't a joke, for I know if it rained the prayers would have been deemed a success. What is ridiculous and just downright stupid is the thinking that God will capitulate to these inane requests or frivolous commands. Grow up! Jesus was born in Israel under Roman occupation, and God himself sent the family to hide out in Egypt until Herod stopped looking for him to kill him. God didn't give the Romans the boot. Matter of fact the Empire flourished right up to the time of Jesus' crucifixion. That shows me that true Christianity is not contingent on who rules secular society. Even Christ separated the church from the state when he said "my kingdom is not of this world", and He never once led his disciples to believe His mission was to rout the Romans.
FOTF is just an example of the visible church which has forgotten its mission and prefers to play politics. Endorsement of the Bush regime hasn't done a thing for America, and the church should look within itself to influence the world and stop setting up world leaders to make the cup they have to drink more palatable!

Despite the Focus on the Family request for followers to pray for rain on the Democratic Convention, there was on one drop reported. This must be a sign from God that we must vote for Obama. I thought that I would give prayer a chance. It resulted in a hurrican. I am just kidding of course.

"I wonder if you would be laughing if someone prayed the same prayer during the Republician Convention."

Uh, yeah, I would be laughing.

Because the Republicans will be inside, under a roof.

Because their nominee doesn't feel the need to turn his acceptance speech into a Triumph of the Will-like spectacle.

Very disappointed in FOTF regarding this. I wonder if you would be laughing if someone prayed the same prayer during the Republician Convention.

And if it really does rain??? Won't that be a sign?? Maybe a sign that Obama is NOT the one? Just for those who are still swooning of course. The rest of us are like soooo over Obama.

No reason to get your panties in a twist....Obama would just raise his hand in the air and the rain would stop and the skies would open up...we all know he has super powers, so this rainstorm they're prayin for will never happen. Obama is God.

It is obvious that he was kidding, like anyone control's the rain why are we arguing about this. It is just one more reason to TRY to be angry at FOTF. DUMB a wast of time they really help people too. Some people just don't like to admit that.aggree to dissagree. get over it.

Taxes always go up we are Americans. We like to be oppinionated. And sense of hummor is uncommon, kinda like common sense.

sesna:
that is an educated thoughtful comment you made but, it is too bad that much of the 'christian media' and evangelical circus is just a plain old political shell game to evade taxes, make money and influence pedal. It's a worldwide ponzi scheme of dare I say it.... "biblical proportion".

It's just as bad as sports players, making the '1' sign to the sky when something good happens during the game, but, you get nothing when they drop the ball, it would be sort of funny on some level if they at least pointed downwards when they messed up to assign blame.

I am a Christian and this is why people looks at Christians and can't get in touch with God. There are Christians in all suits. None of us are cookie cutters of each other. There are liberal, moderate and conservative Christians. Focus on the Family days are near an end for the way they portray THEIR Christ. Christ is for everyone, and this add just showed that little minds....well that is what God is not about. Sorry, a Christian Organization ever would think of doing this add. However, they do tons of other defamations in the name of the Lord. Very sad to me as a Christian. I am not of this bunch. Just beyond disgusting. And done in the name of the Lord. I don't think so. God is not about this kind of work.

Why not Rev Wright and his followers like Obama prayed for the CHICKENS TO COME HOME TO ROOST by killing 3000 people in the world trade center. So praying for rain on Obama's parade is not asking for anything worse.

Focus on the Family is the most humorless bunch of Christians I've ever come across so the claim that this is supposed to be humor kind of misses the mark!

Posted by: tinat | Aug 13, 2008 3:50:21 PM

This just proves that these kinds of Christians are MEAN. They give religious people a bad name.

"My basic point in responding to the "MOVEON" post was that the line of satire was blurred when FOTF does the skit, but it would have been heightened if a secular group like MOVEON did it.

Do you recognize the difference?"

Well for openers, Chris, Moveon wouldn't produce anything satirical at all, since they're basically a bunch of humorless drones -- they pretty much specialize int working themselves up into a pants-drenching frenzy over just about everything. I'm surprised they haven't posted the talking points yet about how this video is RACIST.

The only reason "the line of satire was blurred" here is because of who developed it. Again, the point is not the content, or whether its funny -- it's the perspective. If someone on the right posts a video like this, oh-my-golly goodness, what a horrible, terrible, rotten, mean, nasty thing to do.

But if someone in the Obama camp did, well, that's all just good sporting fun, now isn't it? Hee hee hee.

But hey, what do I know -- I'm just a rural, narrow-minded, churchgoing gun nut. It takes a more tolerant,open-minded sophisticate, ostensibly, to understand how that's not totally hypocritical.

If rain coincidentally occurs, then the Christian right and Focus could feel vindicated, because most assuredly, this video would be dragged out. Scary scenario.

Focus on the Family should lose their tax exempt status because of this. As far as I am concerned they have, as a group, chosen a candidate. Seperation of Church and State was implemented by our founding fathers to keep the church/religion out of government. Shame on you Focus on the Family. How dare you make light of prayer. Nice job Focus on the Family I'm sure God is realy proud of you.

These guys need to start focussing on themselves and understand who they are before they start ( supposedly)focussing on the family. Just like Randall Terry and Ralph Reed, time will show what a bunch of deceivers and liars they are just looking to exploit the foolish and ignorant for their own material gain. They are just a bunch of self centered republicans, who like the evil one tries to appear as light, yet are slaves of darkness.Let them remember that McCain denounced and rejected the endorsements of Parsley and Hagee, and pray that he does not denounce and reject them too as heirs of slew foot.
