Focus On The Family Pulls Video (Jokingly) Asking Supporters to Pray for Rain During Obama's Speech
August 13, 2008 8:12 AM
"Would it be wrong to ask people to pray for rain?" asks Stuart Shepard, director of digital media the political arm of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, Focus Action, in this video.
"Not just rain," Shepard clarifies, "abundant rain, torrential ran, urban-and-small-stream-advisory rain."
When would this rain come?
"The evening of August 28 right here at Mile High stadium in Denver," so as to ruin Sen. Barack Obama's plans to accept the Democratic presidential nomination.
"I'm talking-umbrellas-ain't-gonna-help-you rain," Shepard says. "Not flood-people-out-of-their-houses rain, just good ol' swamp-the-intersection rain...network-cameras-can't-see-the podium rain."
Why?
"I'm still pro life, and I'm still in favor of marriage as being between one man and one woman," Shepard explains. "And I would like the next president who will select justices for the next Supreme Court to agree."
After some members of the organization complained about the video, which was supposed to be humorous, the organization took it off their website.

They're doing the same thing Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter do - claiming any failed attack was only meant to be 'humorous' anyway.

Unless you find an old bearded man building a big boat and loading neocons into it, I wouldn't worry too much.
On the other hand, if the NEXRAD reports a front coming, take a blanket AND a ground cloth. Then you can have the same experience we had at rock concerts in the seventies: the giant two and half foot tall seamless stadium roof. Hint: don't be near the edge. All the water pours on to the people holding the edges.

Mr. Coffee, I agree with you. And to add, some of these unwanted children are abused. And look how many are put up for adoption that never get adopted. Where are the pro-lifers for these children.

Idiots like this guy make it hard to be a Christian or a Republican. I mean really, is he so afraid of the political process that he has to ask for divine intervention?

"Ah, so it wasn't the content itself, it was the lack of artfulness that was the problem..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jblog,
If you've been reading my posts, I haven't been worked up in a frenzy about the FOTF video. I recognized that it was an attempt at humor. It just wasn't funny. There's nothing hypocritical in that.
My basic point in responding to the "MOVEON" post was that the line of satire was blurred when FOTF does the skit, but it would have been heightened if a secular group like MOVEON did it.
Do you recognize the difference?
They do not believe in the Constitution and the rights and values it supports. They want the codify the Bible and have everyone live under their warped Dominionism views. They need to be called out as the whack jobs that they are.
"You miss the obvious point: if MOVEON filmed such a video, it would CLEARLY be satire. Plus, if MOVEON did it, it would likely be better written and produced, and actually humorous."
Ah, so it wasn't the content itself, it was the lack of artfulness that was the problem...
Right, sorry, forgot -- it's always okay/special/different when someone you agree with does it.
"He's looking more like Bush every day. Which is too bad... because he has a big reputation! I mean I even supported him in 2000, when I was a Republican."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good points Blip,
We share a common biography. I was a staunch republican, voting republican from 1988 through 2000. I voted for McCain in the 2000 primary, even though Bush was the presumptive nominee at that point. I voted for Bush in 2000.
It was the Iraq war that converted me. I was appalled when they began rolling out the case for war with Iraq.
Needless to say, I voted for Kerry in 2004 and will vote for Obama in 2008.
It's sad to watch McCain unravel. I still can't get to that point of demonizing the man. I still like him, but don't want him anywhere near the presidency.

If focus on the family is so concerned about the sanctity of marriage why are they supporting the candidate who is divorced and is an admitted adulterer?
Oh because he vows to appoint judges that conform to the christianist views? So integrity and living by their faith is not important, only a##### for their cause is all that matters.
Focus on the family is a fraud and lacks core Christian values. Can we tax them like any other special interest?

I perfect example of why one should have no respect for religion, preachers, and "evangelists". If they can excuse such blatant politicking by calling it a "joke" one should apply the same standard to the rest of what they say.

The question, Chris, is would you want a president who cannot face criticism and who refuses to hold himself accountable?
To run an ad, like the celebrity ad, and claim it with pride, as McCain did. And then to turn around and say it was only a joke after people get sick of it... it says that McCain is a strange combination of thoughtless and spineless...
He'll do whatever he has to to win, but he won't face the music for it. Now, most politicians have problems in this area, to a greater or lesser degree... But this flies in the face of McCain's media image as a courageous, heroic man, capable of dealing with our enemies...
He's looking more like Bush every day. Which is too bad... because he has a big reputation! I mean I even supported him in 2000, when I was a Republican.

check out the weather from last year on that date. Tornado in Denver.

"
I have noticed that the entire anti-Obama strategy is characterized by passive aggression.
Put out provocative nudges and winks for one audience... and then when someone calls them on it... they say, "but we were only joking!"
On the other hand, if you say something funny about McCain, they jump out of their skin."

Excellent insight Blip!
When the McCain camp initially released their Britney/Paris commercial, they did NOT treat it as humor. It was all so serious. They argued that Britney/Paris symbolized the sort of celebrity for celebrity's sake motif that makes up the Obama candidacy.
It wasn't until several days of criticisms were leveled at them that they said, "well, this is all just humor. Can't you take a joke?" With that, they released "The One", which is more of an attempt at humor.

John... The humor is because they don't have the intellectual muscle, the facts, and the popular support to put their agenda out their in a clear and transparent way.
The only way they can win it this year is if they try to control the pulpit by mocking Obama's popular support and blocking it out of the media as much as possible. Then they can rely on half-truths and jokes to sell their message without having to provide anything more substantive.

"Funny. Cuz I'm pretty sure that if Moveon.org posted a video asking people to pray for rain for a McCain event, those ever-so-tolerant Obama supporters would think that was JUST HYSTERICAL."

Whats with all these right wing wack jobs trying to be "humorous" this year? ITs pretty pathetic, but obviously just an attempt to get people to pay attention to them, since nobody seems to give a rats ass about the lame right anymore....

Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.
Suck it up. Grow up. Get a sense of humor. Get a life.

"Why don't you christians pray for rain where there is drought and no drinking water."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where's the fun in that? It's all about ensuring that the party of God (GOP) retains power and nominates more conservative judges to the court.
Posted by: ChrisNBama | Aug 13, 2008 10:13:01 AM
It was clearly meant to be humorous. It just wasn't all that funny.
Having lived in Denver, I can assure you, that it WOULD take an act of God to produce rain in August.
I really wish that FOTF would, you know, Focus On The Family, and get the hell out of politics. After all, it was no less an authority than Jesus Himself who viewed the political sphere as controlled by the prince of this world.
Finally, I really wish they would stop distorting Obama's position on gay marriage. He doesn't support it. Civil Unions yes, but not gay marriage. Although to be fair, it seems that Obama is warm to the idea, but he has rejected it as a political issue.
Why don't you christians pray for rain where there is drought and no drinking water. Isn't that what prayer is for? If you give a glass of water in His name it is like giving it to Him......I suppose you prefer the G-d of the Old Testament, a G-d of wrath!
