Independent Group With Links to McCain Campaign Assails Obama on Ayers
August 22, 2008 10:14 AM
"Beyond the speeches, how much do you know about Barack Obama?" asks the new TV ad from a non-profit conservative group called the Americans Issues Project. "What does he really believe?"
The ad then tries to tie 9/11 to the Weather Underground and William Ayers, and Ayers to Obama.
"United 93 never hit the Capitol on 9/11," says the ad, "But the Capitol was bombed thirty years before – by an American terrorist group called Weather Underground…that declared 'war' on the U.S. – targeting the Capitol, the Pentagon, Police Stations, and more. One of the group’s leaders, William Ayers, admits to the bombings, proudly saying later: 'We didn’t do enough.' Some members of the group Ayers founded even went on to kill police.
"Obama’s political career was launched in Ayers’ home," the ad continues, "And the two served together on a left-wing board. Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol… and is proud of it? Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?"
Asked by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos about his relationship with Ayers, Obama said,"This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who's a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He's not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis. And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn't make much sense...The fact is that I'm also friendly with Tom Coburn, one of the most conservative Republicans in the United States Senate, who, during his campaign, once said that it might be appropriate to apply the death penalty to those who carried out abortions. Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn's statements? Because I certainly don't agree with those, either."
Obama said the Ayers argument is a "kind of game in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, that somehow their ideas could be attributed to me, I think the American people are smarter than that. They're not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn't."
Ed Failor, Jr. sits on the board of American Issues Project. The executive vice president of Iowans for Tax Relief, Failor was a senior adviser to the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, as this cached press release shows.
The press release was only taken down from the McCain website in the last few weeks -- the Google cached version shows it being on the McCain website as recently as June 29, 2008 -- though the McCain campaign says Failor hasn’t had anything to do with their campaign in months.
The spokesman for the American Issues Project, which says it intends to spend $2.8 million on the initial ad buy, is Christian Pinkston, who also worked for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
Eight years ago, Pinkston gave McCain's presidential campaign $250. Seven years ago Ayers gave Obama state senate campaign $200.

The only thing I said was that many powerful people have done drugs in their youth including presidents. It's wasn't scandalous because no one really cares.

@Zaggs:
I stand by what I wrote. McCain had no business circumventing the State Department. Period. If they were slow to respond it's because Condi Rice is an incompetent boob, just like the rest of the revolving door Bush administration.
Georgia attacked a small enclave of pro-Russian Georgian citizens within their borders. But these people also had Russian passports. What's the only way you can get a Russian passport? By being a Russian citizen. End of story.
What happened in Georgia was an act of aggression of Georgia on Georgians. Only the South Ossetian Georgians are in fact Russian of some stripe. The Russians were dying to humiliate Saakashvili and give the West something to think about over the now-ratified U.S. missile shield in Poland, so they seized this opportunity to make their point. South Ossetia, Georgia, and in fact the whole region was part of the former Soviet Union; the same Soviet Union that produced KGB-agent Vladimir Putin. Perhaps it's not water under the bridge.
Even the U.N. security council can see this is gamesmanship between the U.S. and Russia and chose to stay the hell out of it. Don't be so naive.

Eyes, A lot of people in power have done drugs in their youth, among other things. This includes some of our presidents. And where are these scandals. There aren't any because nobody, except for the older generation, cares if they did drugs.

Eyes wide open, it just goes to show that McCain didn't show good judgement when he got involved with the Keating 5. Is there a time limit on bad judgement.

____________
How far back should we go to forgive barack for HIS blunders?
Let's see...... about twenty or so years ago, he was still into drugs.....

Joe,
I'm not arguing in behalf of Bill Clinton;
I was merely trying to show that Ayers, who is more than just an "associate" of Obama's, put people in danger and never showed one ounce of remorse for his actions.... even after the bombings of the twin towers.
(On the other hand, imperfect though he was/is, Bill Clinton will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents!)

" Many younger voters do not remember the Keating Five Scandal - but John McCain was the greatest hypocrite amongst the lot. "
____________
EGADS!!!!
How many times must you be told... and told again.... that McCain was cleared of any complicity or guilt in this event which occurred more than twenty years ago and which you bring up like an after-dinner burp every time you run out of something to beef about!
Give it up!

Joe, McCain also called for unseating Saddam from the inside. he also said "But No. 2, these organizations could not flourish effectively unless they had the help and assistance and safe harbor of these nations. And it isn't just Afghanistan — we're talking about Syria, Iraq, Iran, perhaps North Korea, Libya and others.". If you are accusing McCain over such statements of being quick to war, the same must also be said of Obama who said he would strike Pakistan if they did not go after terrorists as well. In fact did not Obama also state "There can be no safehaven for terrorists who threaten the American people." (in fact its on his webpage). Whats the difference between the statements outside of McCain being more specific?

Thank goodness courageous people are putting the truth about Obama out. And clearly Obama has LIED about the relationship with Ayers! He makes it out to be casual, but Obama launched his campaign at Ayers home....you call that casual, someone who justlives in his neighborhood? Ayers has been Obama's benefactor for years! Another exercise in poor poor judgement from Precious Obama.
Americans will come to know the Wrights and Ayers of Obama's ways.

Cracker, let me try to make this very simply so you can understand. Even obama came round and recognized Russia over reacted and was the aggressor. You cannot escape that fact no matter how many words you want to put on my keys.
Who said anything about militarily backing up Georgia? Not McCain. The difference is Obama could only think of the UN security council. Anything done there would be vetoed by Russia. Hell they met 5 times in 5 days and could not even issue a STATEMENT! But good to know what people in obama-land consider a good responce. In fact even to this day the UN STILL has yet to do anything.
McCain, on the other hand, called on the UN, the European Union (EU) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE). Why those last two? Because McCain knew, unlike Obama who as usual is clueless in all things foreign, the the cease fire between Georgia and ossetia (its never been part of Russia, which makes one wonder how they got Russian passports) was brokered by and observed by the OSCE.
Also the EU could actually bring economic pressure onto Russia.
That is far from acting unilaterally and calls into question your knowledge of the basic facts of foreign policy and current events.

McCain is up to his eyeballs in the muck that is being flung about by his Karl Rove handlers. I agree that it is indeed time to remind people how corrupt McCain really is. Many younger voters do not remember the Keating Five Scandal - but John McCain was the greatest hypocrite amongst the lot. The amazing aspect of this story is that McCain was caught red-handed so there is no need to rump up a bunch of Swift Boat style lies - his dishonesty is a matter of record.

Imagine Obama with Pelosi and Reid...
- Truly SCARY !!!!

This is once again the dumbest argument I have ever been involved in with ####### who refuse to look at facts!
Posted by: Joe | Aug 22, 2008 2:14:48 PM
it seems that obama has been making too many defensive statements about his questionable friends......all these questionable characters do have one thing in common: obama

I am not looking for a grade from someone who twist facts around because of blind support for someone who pardons terrorist. You like that assertion?
Posted by: Joe | Aug 22, 2008 2:08:29 PM
So it's okay if you are convicted and repentant but not okay if you weren't convicted and unrepentant? This is a dumb argument with someone who just refuses to look at facts.. Or is it ok because Bill did it? I know how you really feel now.
