Kaine Says Russians "Complied With" Obama's Request for a Ceasefire; Tanks Continue Rolling Into Gori
August 13, 2008 7:44 AM
"The Senator's goal was to be tough and smart," Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, "and so when the action (in Georgia) happened on Thursday, he immediately called for a ceasefire, condemned the unwarranted use of force by Russia. It was a bad crisis for the world. It required tough words, but also a smart approach to call on the international community to step in -- and I'm very, very happy that the senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with by President Medvedev.”
Kaine, thought to be on Obama's short list for VP, was speaking to Fox News Channel.
Georgian officials, meanwhile, say that Russian tanks have continued to roll into the Georgian city of Gori, the ceasefire notwithstanding.

And people thought Hillary was arrogant. I remember my Father in Law before he died says she was "Machavellian". LOL. What a joke, seems we've been fooled again, the one with the real "god complex" is Obama.

One day, McCain wants Russia kicked
out of G-8. The next day, he wants
to work with them in reducing
nuclear warheads.
On NATO expansion, he doesn't care
what the Russians think. Then he
turns right around and says he wants
their cooperation in dealing with
Iran.

Tim Kaine must be the manager for The Back Street Boys too!
What a teeny bopper statement.....

this crisis to sudden denouement?
Neither do I.

"...the senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with by President Medvedev"
LOL!!!
Too much kissing of Dearest Leader's behind has given Kaine a high!
So, Sarkozy was there delivering Obama's request? You can't make this up!

Russians tried to hit pipeline, but missed. At least that was the initial report.
Posted by: Temagami | Aug 13, 2008 10:54:45 PM
In mcCain's speech, he makes the false claim that Russia tried to bomb an oil pipeline. If you just read the speech, you would never know that the Georgian army tried to take S, Ossetia, making it sound like everything started last Friday. The casualty numbers he's talking about are the South Ossetians, but he makes it sound like it was the Georgians. He made the claim that a foreign minister of some unnamed country said that Russia wanted regime change in Georgia (huh? Thats supposed to mean something?). Then he goes on to say 'today we are all Georgians' - except the South Ossetians, I guess.
McCain is rambling. Perhaps a senior moment?

Barb and Bucky.
Probably one of the many reasons Obama nixed Town Hall meetings with McCain -Obama's four to six consecutive words without hesitating seems about right. Also, Obama had promised Bill O'Reilly that he would appear on The Factor. Bill's team has tried many times to schedule Obama but has struck out. It's interesting that McCain will go into the lion's den to campaign, but Obama won't go near any media or groups possibly favoring McCain.

WHAT CEASE FIRE - THAT IS EXACTLY THE POINT - THE RUSSIANS ARE STILL POURING IN. BUSH HAS BEEN THE FORCEFUL ONE. Look for the Russians to back down because of the BUSH RESPONSE.

“This is not 1968, and the invasion of Czechoslovakia, where Russia can invade its neighbor, occupy a capital, overthrow a government and get away with it" said Condoleezza Rice, apparently with a straight face and no trace of irony.
Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 10:16:32 PM
Obama's WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG diplomacy will cause him to be the doormat and laughing stock of the world if he were to become president. Georgia invasion by Russia may be evidence that this is already happening. OBAMA IS SENDING THE WRONG MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO WANT TO DO US HARM.
Posted by: Temagami | Aug 13, 2008 10:07:44 PM
Okay, for those saying that Obama was "wrong". Please explain.
His initial response was based on the facts as that were known at the time. He called for a "cease fire", which, coincidentally, was precisely the approach taken by the Bush White House and World Leaders to the conflict."
I'll explain, ChrisNBama: Obamafans are like their "leader": you folks double-speak. A few months ago, you touted Obama's not voting for the war in Iraq. Clinton voted -- along with most of the members of the Senate and her (to use your words) "response was based on the facts as that were known at the time." Everytime this moron is found to have made obviously dire judgement calls, you folks allow him to offer painfully thin excuses in the name of "if you're not voting for me, you're either stupid or racist." The media has helped this man's campaign along by proliferating reverse discrimation. From a university educated African American, here's a note for you: we're not voting for him and we KNOW why. He's not ready, he's inexperienced, he's not honest, and he's too stubborn to admit that he's is, in fact, NOT God. We've had one megalomaniac too many. We don't need Bush Redux.
Posted by: Julia | Aug 13, 2008 9:17:49 PM
Cease fire --- hmmm maybe the Russian Navy didn't hear about that, since they blew up a Georgian ship today.
Putin wants to rebuild "Mother Russia"...and the Urkraine is next.
Scary -- but it is history repeating itself. WWII Germany invades Poland, etc. Wonder if the French will scream for USA help when they reach France.

Oh yeah, I forgot; Kaine is an idiot. Why is CNN calling him a young man? Are they trying to convince us? 'Cause we can SEE him. He is either much older than Obama or looks really bad for his age......Which is it?
Posted by: irma | Aug 13, 2008 5:14:40 PM
Oh right; because Obama the Senator, supercedes all other heads of countries on the world stage who made the same request. OH BOROHUTHER!
Posted by: irma | Aug 13, 2008 5:09:18 PM
Jake – you’re not giving Obama enough credit here. Not only did the Russians comply (symbolically) with Obama’s request for a ceasefire – apparently the entire international community rallied behind Obama when he asked them to step in.
If Obama’s goal was to be “tough and smart” – he certainly achieved that! A CEASEFIRE – BRILLIANT! What would the world have done without Barack Obama’s leadership on this one?

Clarification: Sarkozy talked to both Medevev and Putin yesterday at the Kremlin.
Posted by: kat | Aug 13, 2008 3:44:33 PM
President Sarkozy from France was the one who flew to Russia to work things out with Putin for a cease fire. Everyone else would like the credit for however long the de-escalation lasts.

where does th eother 97% comeform? coal? a dirty fuel still. Or nuclear? Still environmentally insane fuel source. We need to be able to nuetralize the waste.

sorry, stressa but you're wrong. only 3% of US electricity comes from oil
Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 12:42:02 PM
Mike:
I am referring to Iran now. If they lead the world in wind power, why must they build nuclear plants? they have enough oil to run everything. Why on earth would they want nuclear if it produces radioactive waste which has an afterlife of thousands of years? This is much more environmentally irresponsible.
Posted by: stressa | Aug 13, 2008 12:41:43 PM
Mike:
What major thing that is running doesnt use oil? We have some nuclear but that really isnt the answer because there is a problem with waste disposal. What do you think? You can add a few drops of this and let it cycle and add a few drops of that and let it cycle to nullify the waste and make it safe and environmentally sound?
I am sorry but I dont think it is wise to pull your pants down out in the street in December because you have heat in your house down the street. It all goes right back to my original statement- we need fire engines and hospitals now not when we implement newer technologies tomorrow.

len, whether they planned this fiasco ahead or not (obviously Saakashvili did, Bush maybe, hard to believe that McCain's advisor was out of the loop), that has nothing to do with supporting Russia. Just because McCains advisor is in the payroll of a foreign country doesnt mean I support the other side.

Ummm... you do know how wingnut sounding that is, right? You do know that if such a position were laid at Obama's feet as his idea that his defeat would not only be in this race but in every race for the rest of his life, yes?

Posted by: spock | Aug 13, 2008 12:09:04 PM
It looks like Saakashvili and Bush have been planning this for a while. Last month, they had war games together in Georgia. (I'd link to MSNBC news item on this but it has since been scrubbed)
I believe that they thought they could defeat the South Ossetian forces much quicker, and be in defensive positions before the Russians responded.
The Ossetians repelled the initial attempts of the Georgians to take their capital, hence the Georgians resorting to atrocities, and the Russians being able to drive through the area very quickly.
I think that Bush and Saakashvili were hoping to present Medvedev with a fait accompli, and having badly miscalculated are now stuck having to surrender under the most onerous terms to the Russians.
Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 12:07:56 PM
I'm waiting to see how the MSM spins Kaine's statement. It's ludicrous on the face of it but makes nice fodder for a quick ad.

oil is not only for running cars. It is used to run A LOT of things and make A LOT of products. You make oil so irrelevant. which it is most certainly not.
Posted by: stressa | Aug 13, 2008 11:52:35 AM
stressa, oil is good for running cars, but not so efficient for generating electricity. Iran, for example, has tons of oil and yet is still building nuclear plants. (they are also the region's leader in wind power)

Posted by: stressa | Aug 13, 2008 11:19:11 AM
stressa, the Bush government got caught lying about Iraq ties to 9/11, I cant believe the RNC is still pushing that.
BTW, alternate sources DO run those things now, only not here in the US. Due to our governments lack of foresight and private industry's incompetence, we have lost the lead in these technologies.

Mccain: offshore drilling/ nuclear and researching alternate sources of energy.

Posted by: geevill | Aug 13, 2008 10:53:39 AM
I can understand the Russians going into the areas that want to remain under their rule and protecting "their" people. I cant see them going in to another country though. I mean you can say why did the US go into Iraq. I guess it had something to do with an attack on the Pentagon, a failed attempt on the White House and the destruction of the World trade Center all which amount to the destruction of 3000 people in an hour. the Russians want to control the pipelines which supply oil to the west. they don't give a darn about their so called allies.
Posted by: stressa | Aug 13, 2008 10:51:39 AM
All of Europe knew that Georgia's bid for membership in NATO was a bad idea. McCain's top foreign policy advisor (Randy Scheunemann who is also on the payroll of the nation of Georgia) thought it was a good idea to stir up some trouble by telling the Georgians that he could get them in, trying to prove they needed his services at the same time.
Is Scheunemann another April Gilespie (telling Saddam Hussein to go ahead and attack Kuwait)?
Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 10:37:43 AM

Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 9:56:27 AM
Okay, for those saying that Obama was "wrong". Please explain.
His initial response was based on the facts as that were known at the time. He called for a "cease fire", which, coincidentally, was precisely the approach taken by the Bush White House and World Leaders to the conflict.
As more facts became known, and it was clear that Russia escalated the conflict by invading Georgia, Obama condemned Russian aggression.
This is sound. You base your response as reality dictates.
This was glaringly missing from the initial McCain response, which, as Ben Smith at Politico reported, was "unique" in its confrontational approach.
Moderation was called for in this situation, particularly since the U.S. is in NO position to back up its rhetoric with military might.
Based on everything we know now, it was McCain that failed his "3:00 AM" moment.

Once again Obama is proven so utterly wrong when it comes to foreign policy. That makes him 0 for 2 on the biggest foreign policy matters to come up during his senate time. He was completely dead wrong on the surge and has been utterly lost on the Georgian crisis and now is doing his best to copy McCain.
Posted by: Zaggs | Aug 13, 2008 9:27:23 AM
Sarkozy might be interested to learn about this; guess he could have just stayed in France and not wasted his time negotiating a truce (which doesn't appear to be holding, by the way).
This election cycle has shown that the Democrats are every bit as corrupt as any Republican ever dreamed of being. Now we can throw in outrageously naive and clueless to boot.
Though I've voted predominantly Democrat throughout 30+ years of voting, my votes for Democrats will surely be few and far between in the near future.
Posted by: marylou | Aug 13, 2008 8:56:47 AM
Well, they didn't listen to the French president, either, apparently. All the same, someone needs to tell McCain's advisors (and then they can explain this to McCain) that the Cold War is over.

For those who think Russia stopped because of Bush, imagine if he Bush the only one who asked for a cease fire? Bush has no credibility with Russia or anyone in this world for that matter, and Russia would have simply laughed out loud at his request. The only explanation for the cease fire is that Russia they're going to going to spend the next 8 years dealing with president Obama, and they know he's serious even though he doesn't spout off empty condescending threats like Bush and McCain. Kudos to Obama.

Putin is laughing at the way the United States (read George Bush and John McCain) compromised American interests and power with the FIVE YEAR war in Iraq.
Putin doesn't care what the United States has to say regarding Russia's attack on Georgia. He knows we have no capability to stop him.

Does anyone wonder why the celebrity ads have gained so much popularity. As Moses parted the Red Sea, Obama speaks and war stops. As a loyal Democrat for 25 years I am sickened by our current presumed nominee and have just decided to donate additional funds to McCain. Good job Obama/Kaine
Posted by: Brenda | Aug 13, 2008 8:12:34 AM
I just have to add, I am just waiting for Obama to place his hand over some blind person's eye and declare he can now see. U.S. needs to be a leader not a follower, and I am so tired of everyone saying oh Obama stances are so much in line with all our allies, he says what they say. We need to take the lead and not just give lip service because that's what all the countries say. I know its coming but I am not quite ready for the one world government.

August 13 the Russians reasserted their traditional dominance of the region and the fighting continues. It is rather disgusting to hear that OBAMA wants to take credit for ending the conflict--"I am very happy that the Senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with" says Kaine. So Obama goes body surfing, eating shaved ice and the conflict continues. Another statement forthcoming from Obama I assume. It is a certainty that America is doomed if Obama-Kaine becomes President and VP. Neither understands any foreign policy and the US will be left unprotected.
Posted by: Mike | Aug 13, 2008 7:57:36 AM
