McCain Camp Denies that Sarah Palin was a Member of the Buchanan Brigades in the 1990s
August 30, 2008 2:23 PM
A meme is developing out there among liberals that Gov. Sarah Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan in the 1990s, a charge that the McCain-Palin campaign strongly denies.
The evidence is the following, as first noticed by "The Nation": in an Associated Press story from July 17, 1999, titled, "Buchanan takes conservative message to Fairbanks."
"Pat Buchanan brought his conservative message of a smaller government and an America First foreign policy to Fairbanks and Wasilla on Friday as he continued a campaign swing through Alaska….In Wasilla, Buchanan took some shots at the "Republican establishment," saying it was willing to cast aside conservative ideals in a zeal to ensure the nomination for Bush. 'I'm hoping the people of Alaska will disagree that we need a candidate anointed by Washington, D.C.,' he said to a group of three dozen supporters. Among those sporting Buchanan buttons were Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin and state Sen. Jerry Ward, R-Anchorage."
Palin wrote to the AP that her presence at the rally and her wearing a Buchanan button were merely ways to welcome Buchanan to Wasilla, not endorsements of his candidacy.
But that's not quite how Buchanan remembers it.
Buchanan told Chris Matthews yesterday that Palin "was a brigader in 1996 as was her husband, Chris, they were at a fundraiser for me, she's a terrific gal, she's a rebel reformer."
McCain-Palin campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb writes: "Governor Palin has never worked for any effort to elect Pat Buchanan -- that assertion is completely false. As Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin did attend an event with Mr. Buchanan in her home town where reports described her wearing a Buchanan for President button. She wore the button as a courtesy to Mr. Buchanan and in an effort to make him feel welcome during his visit, but immediately sent a letter to the editor of her local paper clarifying that the button should not have been interpreted as an endorsement of any kind."
Buchanan of course has a long history of quite questionable comments, particularly about Jews.
Rep. Bob Wexler, D-Florida, took the AP report, and said "John McCain's decision to select a vice presidential running mate that endorsed Pat Buchanan for president in 2000 is a direct affront to all Jewish Americans. Pat Buchanan is a Nazi sympathizer with a uniquely atrocious record on Israel, even going as far as to denounce bringing former Nazi soldiers to justice and praising Adolf Hitler for his 'great courage.' At a time when standing up for Israel's right to self-defense has never been more critical, John McCain has failed his first test of leadership and judgment by selecting a running mate who has aligned herself with a leading anti-Israel voice in American politics. It is frightening that John McCain would select someone one heartbeat away from the presidency who supported a man who embodies vitriolic anti-Israel sentiments."
The McCain campaign says that instead of supporting Buchanan -- or even McCain -- in 2000, Palin actually supported Steve Forbes.
And indeed, another AP story from August 7, 1999 -- one month after the Buchanan trip to Wasilla -- states that joining state sen. Mike Miller of Fairbanks on the Forbes campaign's Alaska "leadership committee will be Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin, and former state GOP chairman Pete Hallgren, who will serve as co-chairs."

Does she have a 20 year history of sitting and listening to Pat Buchanan, every single weekend? Did she give him money every week? Did she serve on a board with Buchanan? Did she have financial dealings with him.
Yes, her association with him must be looked into. So that we can see if she shares his feelings. Just like we must look closer to Obama's associations

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this woman has more integrity than any politician on the national scene at this time. Take the time to read a little about her and don't let your ideology get in the way of clear, common sense thinking. I personally am not a McCain backer, but Palin adds much to his ticket. It will make me look closer at the McCain/Palin campaign.
By the way, it is "Down"---not "Down's" Syndrome. I have a child with Down Syndrome. It took me many years to realize the correct name.

Palin is an outstanding pick. Skeptical? Watch and learn.

If she is a Buchananite than I have even more reason to vote for her!!

yep seems like the dirt is already being served up on mrs. palin. this is not the only lie they've caught her in. i was reading about this "bridge to nowhere" project about her taking state funding for the bridge, lied the other day at the rally about turning down the money from congress. but anyways it was in an alaska newspaper that she was for it. how could anyone support pat "racist" buchannan? he even said it himself she was at his fundraiser, say what you want about rev. wright but he didn't kill anybody that's for damn sure.

Laura Ingraham claims that in a recent interview of Gov. Palin, she stated that she's "against Amnesty for illegal aliens". I'd like to hear that from the horse's mouth. And more importantly, I'd like to hear McCain state clearly and unilaterally that he would never sign any sort of Amnesty bill from Congress. He won't do that, of course, which is why he's not getting my vote. But I will quietly support Gov. Palin.
Rep. Wexler's a Communist and a lying loudmouth. He's also been investigated for corruption. He's simply an attack dog for the far left. I wouldn't believe a word he says.

judas priest, will you give us (real conservatives) a break. William F. Buckley was a clown and a parody of his former self by 1991. He was a faux conservative in other words. Every true conservative knew this by that time. No, anything he said about conservatives,(not neo-conservatives whom he bowed to) post 1980 was a joke. Pat Buchanan was and is not an anti-semite, unless you believe the defintion of an anti-semite is anyone who disagrees with Jewish folks on political issues. If that is what you mean, then Buchanan is not alone, believe me.

M & M:
And what is your objection to Rep. Wexler calling Buchananan anti-Semite? After all, he is one.
To All:
Sorry about the double post. My finger twitched.

That is three separate ties to the Buchanan campaign. That's trouble. If a bit more evidence shows up she wears the "liar" label from then on. And the Republicans can't afford to drop her from the ticket.
That's the trouble when you selected unvetted politicians on the spur of the moment.
I wonder if anybody has a transscript of the meeting where she "welcomed" Buchanan...

Mr. Wexler is playing with serious gutter politics. The line between his tactics and the neocons is very thin indeed.
We've seen this movie before, and it is very regressive and very ugly. But par for the course.

Bobby:
Pat Buchanan not an anti-semite? Try reading an essay by that notorious left-winger, the late William F. Buckley, in the National Review:
National Review, In Search of Anti-Semitism, dated December 30, 1991. In the article, Buckley concludes that Pat Buchanan was ... "a Gentile who said things about Jews that could not reasonably be interpreted as other than anti- Semitic in tone and in substance."

According to Diana Mrs. Palin is an extremist but not Obama, a friend to an admitted and avowed terrorist and a racist preacher whom he was even married by. Are you people just plain sick or evil. Which is it?

I'm dense. I'm dumb. I just don't understand.
The Dems are quite upset over Palin attending a single meeting for Pat Buchanan and given that one meeting believe she must endorse all of Pats opinions.
The Dems have no trouble over BHO's numerous meetings with an avowed US terrorist, actively participate and contribute to a priest and a minister who regularly state the US is the cause for all world problems and meet numerous times with others tied to Middle East terrorist groups.
Could some Dem explain to me why Palin's meeting is bad while Barrack can meet with anyone and it's ok?
Why is this not a double standard?

"Here is a man, Barack Obama, with extreme intelligence combined with thoughtful and caring decision-making. "
This extremely intelligent man who sits on several international investigative committees two weeks ago didn't know that Russia actually sits on the Security Council at the UN. This intelligent man didn't know Russia can veto any proposal that comes to the Council. High school kids know it but he didn't.
Now I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that simple mistakes can be made, although he makes them regularly. Like he doesn't know where he is, Kansas City or St. Louis, or he doesn't know where he's been, like he actually visited 57 states or after living in Hawaii for 12 years didn't know the Japanese dropped more than one bomb on Pearl Harbor and on and on and on.
But this thoughtful man will solve social security, reduce taxes for 95% of the people, end our war with Islamic fundamentalists, improve our military, stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, prevent Russia from ever invading another country, reduce world poverty by 25% in five years, sell one million cars in 4 years that get 159 miles before a charge is needed even though the technology doesn't exist yet and the batteries available cost about $30,000 every two years, give free preschool to everyone in the US, give all teachers in the US a pay raise, give cars and free day care to all single mothers, force oil companies to drill where they haven't found any oil, tax oil companies an unknown and undefined windfall profits tax, end global warming, the seas will begin to recede, increase world wide goodwill towards the US, increase European troops in Afghanistan via Nato without restrictions, have the US achieve energy independence in 10 years without drilling and disease throughout the world will be reduced dramaticly if not ended.
Not bad for such an extremely intelligent man who is so very humble.
Although he did set a new record for the number of times the word "I" was used in a single acceptance speech.

Please! Palin "wore the button" as a sign of welcoming to Buchanan?? Do people actually believe this? So.. if a white supremist was running for Prez, and came to Wasilla, she'd wear the button and go to the event? How about Obama? Will she wear an Obama button and attend an event if he holds it in her town?
Can't these people do anything HONEST? She was a foot soldier for Buchanan. How does anyone expect us to believe otherwise when ALL of her beliefs tie in with Buchanan's platform? If McCain insists on giving us an inexperienced extremist as at VP that'll be one heartbeat away from Leader of the Free World, then for heaven's sake BE HONEST about her! Do they think we're stupid?

Wow! It sure is encouraging to hear Dems so concerned about family values that are not work related and for personal mistakes that happened over 20 years ago.
If JM had dumped his wife last week, last year or maybe in the last 5 years they may have a point. But over 20 years ago?
Get real.
What happened to family values when a Dem president had affairs in the white house? Oops, there was more than one.
Ok, how about a Dem president who will call a press conference for the entire nation, look directly into the camera and say "I, did not have sex with that woman". Ok that was also personal.
How about a Dem president who, while in charge of the whole justice dept will take an oath and lie while on the witness stand? Oops the Dems feel that's ok too.
If they want to go back over 20 years, how about kicking out all those who were LEADERS of the KKK? Oops, that they can forgive.
Would these same Dems like to open up the death of Mary Jo Kopekne and how Ted Kennedy not only caused her death but left her to die rather than save her and then actively participated in covering up her death? Would these same family values Dems investigate this as well?
For some reason when it comes to family values the crickets are chirping and there's no sound coming from the Dems...

Mr. Buchanan has never been an anti-semite. Those that accused him of this are shameless individuals who, like the liberal media, destroy people they do not agree with by calling them racists, anti-semites, nativists, etc. All emotionally charged words, used irresponsibly. Like the poster Jane, who called Carol a racist, because Carol said she was afraid to vote for Obama. Maybe Carol believes Obama is a racist for having attended the Reverend Wrights church of twenty years?? In the same way, Mr. Buchanan has always had the best interests of this nation first, as his concern, unlike other politicians. What a crime.

Outrageous, now Obama's Harvard Law degree is being questioned? Pardon me; what's wrong with these good for nothings? Let's learn to respect each others. Here is a man, Barack Obama, with extreme intelligence combined with thoughtful and caring decision-making.
McCain is a continuation of this failed Bush/Cheney administration - war, bad economy, tarnished international image, squandered surplus from Pres Clinton. Sarah Palin is a Pat Buchanan brigade? No surprise here - this is typical John McCain’s judgment. He left his wife for a trophy and rich Cindy McCain. Did you see him on CNN last night when accepted the fact that he applied for marriage license with Cindy 5 months before the final divorce with his original wife?
Where is the anger and the religious righteousness’? Where is the family values?

d:
The establishment media created the phony image of McCain as a Maverick.
Now that it no longer suits their purpose, they tear down their own straw man.
McCain is and always has been just a lackey of the Establishment, just like all the rest of those in the top ranks of BOTH political parties.
