McCain Campaign Mocks Obama as Messianic in Web Video

August 01, 2008 2:54 PM

In case you were wondering if Sen. John McCain was going to end the week on a note of substance and the kind of high-minded politics the presumptive GOP nominee said he would like to see in this campaign, a new web video indicates that wasn't in the cards.

A new web video  called "The One" mocks Obama as messianic, using some of Obama's words against him -- some fairly and others unfairly. The ad even juxtaposes Obama with a scene from The Ten Commandments, with Charlton Heston, as Moses, parting the Red Sea.

Let us dissect this, shall we?

Intones the narrator: "It should be known that in 2008 the world will be blessed. They will call him 'The One.'"

"A nation healed, a world repaired," Obama says in his November 2007 speech at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.

"We are the ones we've been waiting for," Obama says, in his Super Duper Tuesday speech in California.

The narrator continues: "And he has anointed himself, ready to carry the burden of The One. To quote Barack, 'I have become a symbol of America returning to our best traditions.'"

As we covered earlier in the week, that quote was actually Obama telling House Democrats that the big crowds and enthusiastic receptions he received in Europe had less to do with him than they had to do with a desire for a new U.S. foreign policy. In a way, it was more a statement of humility than arrogance.

"He can do no wrong," the narrator says.

Cut to an excerpt of CBS's Lara Logan asking Obama, "Do you have any doubts?"

"Never," Obama says, smiling.

"Can you see the light?" asks the narrator.

Obama is then shown in New Hampshire in January saying, "a light beam will shine through -- will light you up -- and you will experience an epiphany -- I have to vote for Barack!"

Obama, it should be noted, was joking.

And the ad omits how Obama started that sentence, "I am going to try to be so persuasive, so that those of you who are still wavering...will suddenly come to the conclusion…"

Says the narrator, "And the world will receive his blessings."

Obama is then shown saying, "This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal," a much-mocked line from his speech in Minneapolis, Minn., the night he secured enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination.

Asks the narrator: "Barack Obama may be 'The One,' but is he ready to lead?"

The John McCain of 2000 would not have run this campaign.

Then again, the John McCain of 2000 lost.

UPDATE: ABC News' Bret Hovell reports that McCain senior aide Nicole Wallace says of this web ad, “It was a communication to our supporters, and was a kind of a bookend to a week that we thought was very successful. Our intention to use a little bit of humor. I think campaigns can be mind-numbingly boring and brutal without a little bit of humor, so we’re proud to use a little bit of humor at the end of the week, especially on a Friday. And the more serious point for our supporters is that despite the size of his crowds, his celebrity and fans are nothing to be intimidated by as the underdog campaign. As the underdog campaign, sometimes the crowds aren’t 200,000 strong and roaring, but it’s just a different approach and style and imagery. We’re holding our own, and we’re very pleased with the way things are going and where we are.”

McCain is pathetic. He can't even give a good argument of why Obama can't lead or why we should vote him to become president. Instead he has look passed all of our important issues and has become some sort of immature teen. Why would you compare Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton in one ad then call him Moses in another. Who doesn't want to be like Moses? McCain has disrespected all Christians! McCain is ridiclous. He has now lost all respect from me and a potential vote.

Any Christian who calls him or herself a Democrat (or vise versa) should check out this link. It’s a great analysis of this ad and near the bottom is a break-down of all the crazy illusions to the rapture, the Left Behind series, Obama being the anti-Christ, Revelation, and a plethora of other religious icons and imagery. This ad isn’t a joke and it was not made light-heartedly, as the McCain camp has said. Every word and scene was deliberate and potentially damaging to the Obama campaign because it feeds on people’s misguided fears. Worth a look: http://faithfuldemocrats.com/content/view/778/92/

Fear not, for if "The One" were to be rejected, HE will come again in 2008.

Orlando, nice try! What is offensive is how the followers of Sen. Obama have elevated him to such a high pedestal, ascribing upon him characteristics of a deity. The media picked up on this at least as far back as January. And some have even carried this even further. Here is a quote from Timothy Noah from Slate.com in an article that he posted back on Feb. 13, 2008: "I merely suggested that a few excitable souls in the media bear the apparant conviction that Obama is the Redeemer."

Instead of quelling this tide of emotion, Sen. Obama appears to have accepted this and is using it to further his candidacy. A case in point is the quote used in Sen. McCain's ad: "A light will shine down from somewhere. It will light upon you. You will experience an epiphany and you will say to yourself, 'I have to vote for Barack.'"

Now THAT is offensive.

John McCain, Christians are not gonna forgive you for mocking them and making them look like crack pots unless you apologize. You just shot yourself in the foot McCain I think you just forgot who your base is and should apologize to Christians for making a mockery of religion. To be honest, Christians are really turned off by John McCain and will not vote for him. Many people in my Church are voting for Sen Obama because he is a open Christian and has a great respect for Christian values unlike McCain.

Hey, here's a great idea! Let's come out with a McCain as a screw up Mr. Magoo! That would be so funny! He has no clear vision for the country. He gets everything wrong. Lots of possibilities for humor in McOldie. Wait, I'm getting ideas about the music and the staging and the speaking parts. Oh gosh, so, so funny! Let's all laugh together-----
at McCain.

Posters who think this ad insults Christians are nuts. They know a joke when they see one!

Posted by: Jack | Aug 3, 2008 10:26:52 PM

I might have understood the ad more if they hadn't included a clip of Obama actually making a joke about the ad's whole premise.

Reminds me of their ad saying Obama wouldn't visit the troops that used imagery of Obama visiting the troops.

I'm having a hard time imagining who may be impressed by these ads. Are they just to try to convince fellow conservatives that mcsame has a lame sense of humor?

McCain releases web ad that doesn't address a single issue important to Americans. News at 11.

the Dude (and many of you bloggers): Sorry but you couldn't be more wrong. On several levels.

1. Sen. McCain's stand on the issues can be seen on his website. They can be heard in the speeches and town hall meetings that he has every week.

2. Sen. McCain's campaign is not about you. One of the purposes of a campaign ad is to get your attention...YOU WILL REMEMBER THIS AD long after the election...so it worked. Another purpose of a campaign ad is to convey a message. This "The One" ad certainly does that: "Barack Obama may be 'The One'...but is he ready?"

3. This is not a low point in politics. Far from it. Or don't you remember the NAACP's campaign ad showing Gov. George W. Bush driving a pickup truck dragging a black man in chains on a dirt road during the 2000 presidential campaign?

4. Our country is NOT dying! In fact, considering all the hits that our economy has taken this is nothing more than a good size bump in the road. Didn't you notice that GDP has GROWN the past two quarters? Yes folks...even with the slump in the housing market (which is cyclical -- when prices get too high, people stop buying; when prices get low enough, people will start buying again); the skyrocketing prices for energy; and the huge hit with the subprime mortgage crisis and the massive number of home foreclosures -- GDP is still hanging on and GROWING. Albeit it just barely grew at 0.9% in the first quarter; but then it doubled that with a 1.9% gain in the second quarter. And unemployment at 5.7% is not the end of the world for our economy. In the seven years of 1980-1986 we averaged 8.0% unemployment.

5. This has been a very long campaign. Besides we are still in the primary season. The real general election campaign doesn't begin until the candidates are officially nominated in their respective conventions. What this campaign needs is MORE humor. I say let the laughs begin!

I called it when the Obama-Britney-Paris ad first aired, namely Senile John was insulting one of his richest campaign contributors, the Hiltons. Now Kathy Hilton speaks out...."It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign. "It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next president of the United States." John McCain allowed his temperment to get the best of him as it obviously clouded his thinking. John 'Dangerous MInds' McCain lacks the mental fortitude required to be our next president! OBAMA 08'

why don't you talk about what David Gergen thinks the ad is designed to convey.

Posted by: 7worldtrade | Aug 3, 2008 6:05:43 PM

I still see Obama's surrogates are tying to spin the ads into something somehow derogatory about the bible or religion in general. It still isn't working. The ad is simply an insult about Obama thinking he is god.

Posted by: chattyway | Aug 3, 2008 6:03:57 PM

If McCain was a person of faith he would not have launched this type of ad. Is nothing scared to the republican party? do they have any respect for the bible? The ans is very easy just look at the last 8 years of lies and corruption and the ans is absolutely NO !!!!

Ace MCain is blasphemous.

I'm voting for Moses and praying he can lead the people through the red sea - of ink and tape in DC.

Since, McCain has run two different religion attack ads, will the media finally asks is McCain atheist?

Posted by: suv2001 | Aug 3, 2008 3:20:08 PM

Is McCain trying to make joke of Christian and Jewish faith. Does he understand the implication of what this ad stand for? It shows that McCain could careless about sensitivity of religious issues. Is McCain trying curry the favor unbielivers by making mockery of revered images of the Bible. If McCain doesn't belief in the story of the Bible, that does not mean making fun of Christian and Jewish faith. I thought it was going to be a clean campaign. I am concervative Christian, registered Republican, I don't think I have respect for this lowest creature, McCain. I wish he could have shown a little respect and integrity.

Posted by: Drdike | Aug 3, 2008 3:17:15 PM

I wonder how people of faith are feeling, when they know McCain has mock and smear religion. Now, everyone has to asks is McCain atheist, because people of faith do not find it funny mocking religion. Because if you smear or mock religion, you must be atheist When ever anyone discusses religion matters, it must done with respect, because it always brings out people passion regarding their faith or their lack of faith.

Posted by: suv2001 | Aug 3, 2008 3:15:30 PM

McCain's religious theme attack ads brings his own lack of faith into guesting. If he thinks this is so funny, then why does it insult millions of people faith. Because he thinks it is so funny, then the question must be is McCain atheist? Now, if McCain pick Rommey the religious right will have to wonder about McCain lack of faith. This one will come back to bite him.
