Barack Obama's big donors and bundlers get a once-over in today's New York Times, which notes that "one-third of his record-breaking haul has come from donations of $1,000 or more: a total of $112 million, more than Senator John McCain, Mr. Obama’s Republican rival, or Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, his opponent in the Democratic primaries, raised in contributions of that size.
"Behind those larger donations is a phalanx of more than 500 Obama 'bundlers,' fund-raisers who have each collected contributions totaling $50,000 or more. Many of the bundlers come from industries with critical interests in Washington. Nearly three dozen of the bundlers have raised more than $500,000 each, including more than a half-dozen who have passed the $1 million mark and one or two who have exceeded $2 million, according to interviews with fund-raisers."
Read more HERE.
The Washington Post, meanwhile, takes a closer look at one of John McCain's bundlers and has some questions. Such as, why did a mechanic from D&D Auto Repair., the manager of a Rite Aid Pharmacy, and the 30-something owners of the Twilight Hookah Lounge pony up these big campaign contributions?

The WaPo really screwed this up big. They are such tools, but you have to credit them for admitting the screw-up. The NY Times would never admit such a stupid error.

Mr. Tapper-please note that the WP has issued a huge correction which basically destroys the whole premise of this story. One wonders why there is no update from you noting this.

Why is it so surprising that people are finally seeing that Barack Obama is a POLITICIAN. There is but one goal in politics: WIN. That he has the intellect, guile and strategy to win is impressive given what he's up against.
Politics takes money. Lots and lots of money. That he has been able to get so much from contributions of $1000.00 or less is also impressive.

This article shows nothing new. Obama has been distorting and lying since before he began his political life. The sad part, he thinks he has the right to lie and distort. I keep wondering how much illegal money is coming from non-citizens of the USA.

This entire Obama facade is like a bad movie where an inexperienced politician become a celebrity through false marketing and media hype and fools the entire country. No one cares that they don't know where he stands on this issues, that he had only been in the senate for 1 year when he started running for office and in that short time in the senate voted present instead voting for or against issues. That he keeps "changing" his minds on every issue.
Obama "change that is unclear"

TR and Mike. yes Obama lied. Factcheck even looked at his 90% claim and found it false (claim of 90% of donations were $50 or less). Only 34% of his donations fit that category (meaning he's only 56% off) compared to 16% for Hillary and 24% for McCain.
Lets not forget he also lied about his reasoning of flip flopping on public finance. McCain only took in less then 2% of his money from lobbyists and less then Obama. The same about Obama claim's of other being bought by big oil. His amounts for McCain were wrong and Obama himself has taken in over a million from the same sources.

Folks, he needs all the money he can get.
Have you seen the the amount of money they spend on just booze alone in one month?
Don't forget all the fancy dinners that is paid with campaign contributions.

Obama math. base a lie using the number of donations rather than the dollar value.

Folks who think Obama gets his support from the poor, or that Republicans are supported only by the wealthy are a small percentage. The candidates are already wealthy, so their agenda is just about power. It's been suggested and seems to be true, that power corrupts. I'm not aware of any exceptions.

"Obama lied. Again!"
Uh, how?
Did he ever say he received no donations over $1,000? He gets one-third in that amount or more, which means two-thirds are still coming in under $1,000.
I know "facts" and "truth" are hard concepts for the McCain campaign, but please offer evidence of Obama lying here or kindly be quiet. You're just embarrassing yourself.

McCain is in violation of federal campaign finance law and he has been for a long time. Unfortunately, the FEC refuses to enforce the law. All they did was send him a letter saying he was in violation, and he ignored it.

And what about that bundler for McCain? Harry Sargeant III, an oil-trader who recently inked defense contracts worth more than $1 billion? And who wasn't the lowest bidder ...
That was a very unlikely group of donors: a mechanic from D&D Auto Repair in Whittier, the manager of Rite Aid Pharmacy No. 5727, the 30-something owners of the Twilight Hookah Lounge in Fullerton.
Never contributed to a campaign and were not registered to vote, yet have already donated three times to the max to three different campaigns.
Yes, that makes sense.

The messiah is getting caught with crooked donations, probably from the middle east and George Soros!!
Democrats 527's outnumber RNC 10 to 1
The republicans always got money from smaller groups then the Dems, remember the top 10% of the richest people are liberals, that is a fact!!
Posted by: spock | Aug 6, 2008 9:54:19 AM
So after months of listening to Obama's supporters tell us that Obama is clean as a whistle and all of his donations are less than $100 from Mom and Pop donors - we'll now have to watch them twist like pretzels and point fingers at McCain crying, "Yeah, but he did this and that!"
Anything to keep from admitting that Obama "the new politician and change from old politics" is a fraud.

Concerned in OH and Max,
That is a common misconception. Obama says that 90% of his contributions come from small donors. That is technically correct, since 90% of the checks come from small donors. He never said 90% of the money comes from small donors.

What about that Hess-office manager's family? Who live in a rented home and make less than 60,000 annually? Had never in their life donated to any campaign?
But just had more than 60,000.00 just under their mattress?
Or that ‘driver’ for Hess?
And on a second note: what is the ratio of small donation to Obama compared with McCain?
Posted by: Willem van Oranje | Aug 6, 2008 9:49:10 AM
At least Obama's big bundlers are legitimate.
Who knows who actually donated to McCain. A lot of people who don't make a lot of money and are not even registered to vote have donated large sums to the McCain campaign. That makes you say HMMMM....
The bottom line is that NEITHER Obama or McCain are practicing what they preach on campaign finance reform.
But the reality is that in order to win an election it takes MONEY.

B-b-b-but I thought Obama got all his money in $5 donations from Granny and Johnny Smith?

. . . .because he gave them an advance lease for off-shore drilling?
Posted by: DAVID NH | Aug 6, 2008 9:07:42 AM
and how many bundlers does the RNC and 527's have...because those are the ads I have already been seeing.

What about the Hess Oil office manager and her husband -- an Amtrak track inspector -- who donated $60,000 to McCain?
They don't even own their home, and they just had $60,000 lying around to donate to McCain? On the exact same day that 10 Hess Oil executives gave the exact same amount?
Really?!?!
