New Obama Ad. McCain "In the Pocket of Big Oil"
August 04, 2008 6:52 AM
As Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., kicks off a week focused on energy, his campaign will on Monday begin running a new TV ad that attacks Sen. John McCain as "in the pocket of big oil."
"Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets," the narrator says as the screen reads: "$143 Billion in Profits Over the Last Year."
As the ad cuts to a photo of McCain, the narrator says: "Now Big Oil’s filling John McCain’s campaign with $2 million in contributions," citing the Center for Responsive Politics. "Because instead of taxing their windfall profits to help drivers, McCain wants to give them another $4 billion in tax breaks."
This claim, cited on screen as the handiwork of the liberal Center for American Progress, is an apparent reference to McCain's proposal to cut corporate taxes -- for all companies, not just oil companies -- from 35 percent to 25 percent.
As the camera pulls back from the photo of McCain to reveal him standing with President Bush, the narrator says, "After one president in the pocket of big oil, we can’t afford another. Barack Obama: A windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate. A president who’ll stand up for you."
"I’m Barack Obama and I approve this message," says the candidate.
UPDATE: McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds writes to say, "Barack Obama's latest negative attack ad shows his celebrity is matched only by his hypocrisy, after all it was Senator Obama, not John McCain, who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill that was a sweetheart deal for oil companies. Also not mentioned is the $400,000 from big oil contributors that Barack Obama has already pocketed in this election."

The Republicans were mocking the following statement from Obama: "We could save all the oil that they're talking about off(shore) drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You could actually save just as much". The Republicans never said that inflating tires and regular tune-ups were bad practices, they were just mocking Obama's statement that the savings from those measures would equal production from off-shore drilling. Got it? I am lousy at posting links, but if you want to hear Obama's actual words I saw a link at NoQuarter at 21:46 under the post called "Campaign Disclosures".

Obama's economic policy is a recipe for disaster and more jobs to drift away overseas.
1. Windfall profit tax
2. Tax the rich
3. More government regulations
4. Tax more, Spend more and redistribute

Obama’s tax, spend and redistribute economic policy is a socialist idea. Big Oil is basically a scapegoat for Obama and the Do Nothing Democrats. Their idea of windfall profit tax certainly makes them look liked a champ to the voters but we are not the United Socialist of America.
Furthermore, why tax more when tax dollars are wasted on congressional earmarks.
In reality, windfall profit tax stands for more tax dollars, more earmarks.
A windfall profits tax on oil was an American disaster in 1980s. It has been criticized by many economists as being counterproductive.

I disagree in Obama's energy policy except for when he said, strategic oil reserve are for emergency only because I believe high cost of fuel is not considered an emergency but Obama has flipped and flopped on his view on the use of strategic oil reserves. I am also surprised in the number of his flip-flops within the span of one week. Is this how Obama going to lead this country? I also disagree in his latest ad "in the pocket of big oil" because both him and McCain are on the receiving end of big oil contributions. In addition, Obama, not McCain, was the one who voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill. Furthermore, it seems Obama and the Democrats are not consistent with each other. I think the ad will eventually backfire on Obama.-------------------------------------------------------------------***Obama is becoming more confusing, the more he changes his energy policy.

Political campaign cannot expect money from oil companies. The Obama campaign ad is deceptive and misleading. It's against the law for corporations to contribute directly to political campaigns. During the primary battle with Clinton, Obama also did this, and the independent FactCheck.org criticized Obama for at the time for implying that his rivals took money from oil companies.

Politics is about control. One example is the drilling question. We dont have to lease the land to WTO companies. As some posters mention, 75 million acres are leased already and the accountants run those companies, not Mother Teresa. The accountants are SUPPOSED to make the price be high and the cash flow constant. If we stop leasing our US land, and start creating a sovereign corporation or two, to research, drill and deliver OUR oil to OUR refineries, which do not yet exist, we dont have to wonder how high the Chinese or American speculators are willing to bid up the price. We can own the entire process and the products. Yes, socialism comes to America.
Its Ok. You'll like paying $1 for gas instead of $4.
Or you can keep on letting WTO run the USA.
As things are, there is now a legal fiction in the USA that corporations have "the rights of persons". Amazing?! Anyway, oil will be higher and higher if we keep doing the same things. Change can be good. Also, we can go to steam powered cars, tomorrow. Stanley Steamer cars could go 150 MPH.
However they required tinkering. Electronic engineering eliminates all that old-fashioned tinkering, just like it did the hand crank to start gas powered cars eventually. The only technology we need to make the Stanley Steamer completely acceptable is to consider forms of fuel that are not high in emissions. Coal is available, but needs to bve submitted to technology. Anything, even weeds, will make water boil.
Nothing to it but to do it. This drilling stuff is all lies. We have to make real changes in process and techniques. Steam and public ownership are the easy ones. Most of our oil should be reserved for the military now, since it is finite and we can change to steam if we just act like it mattered.
air planes are not going to be steam powered.

chatty-
Do you have ANY idea how much that 8% amounts to? It's more than both of us would make in 10 lifetimes. 8% is a small number, but it represents BILLIONS of dollars.

What a hypocrite! Speaking out of both sides of his mouth again - voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill, now he is criticizing them and Big Oil. Took Big Oil money himself, now he is deriding McCain for doing the same. Cried Boohoo when he was the butt of negative ads, now he is making negative ads. A real Washington Politician! Spare us, pulllease!

McCain/Bush and Cheney are all in bed big oil. McSame is not changing one policy to hurt the oil companies-He may need another pair of $500 shoes-and big oil will get him a pair for everyday of the year. McSame will continue to do the same things as Bush and he will continue to buy expensive shoes. The rich truly get richer.

Hey 08 after,
Those thousands of homeless now, were homeless 6 years ago. They were given a chance to own for the first times in their lives. They lived an up scale life for over 5 years. The smart ones did not re finance every years and have a five year party. So not all of the bush years were a disaster, only the ones you choose to look at.

- In March 08 he said, "I will not play election year politics with the housing crisis," adding, "I have always been committed to the principle that it is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers." - Guess it's not his problem if thousands of Americans become homeless thanks to deregulations in the mortgage industry (which were supported by McCain).

What Senator McCain neglected to mention was that during those thirty years, he was in Washington for twenty-six of them," said the Senator. "And in all that time, he did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. He voted against increased fuel efficiency standards and opposed legislation that included tax credits for more efficient cars. He voted against renewable sources of energy. Against clean biofuels. Against solar power. Against wind power. Against an energy bill that -- while far from perfect -- represented the largest investment in renewable sources of energy in the history of this country. So when Senator McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, it's important to remember that he's been a part of that failure."

Obama's biggest adviser is Tom Dashle who now lobbies for three giant agribusiness. Guess where Obama's bread is buttered.
Then, there's the fact that Obama voted for oil company tax exemptions in 2005. The same ones he now blathers about!
What does this jerk take us for?
