Obama B-Day Present Lost to Streets of Chicago

August 04, 2008 2:30 PM

Last night in Chicago, Marvin Nicholson, the national trip director for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, left Obama's birthday present in a taxicab.

Obama turns 47 today. For his 46th birthday last year, the senior campaign staff bought him an iPod. His staff would not disclose what this year's present is (or was) or even what shopping bag it was in when it vanished last night.

"The cab was yellow," recalls Nicholson, who took the cab from a friend's house to the Palmer House Hilton Hotel where the campaign staff was staying.

He does not remember the name of the driver. "Usually I engage with the drivers, talk to them," says Nicholson. "But this guy was rocking out to 70s songs and he was singing so I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy."

Nicholson has spent much of today phoning around Chicago. "I've learned that pretty much every yellow cab in the city belongs to the Yellow Cab Company," he says.

Nicholson also lost his suitcase in the incident, which occurred, he said, because he was distracted by the warm greetings of the hotel doormen.

The former personal assistant to candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, in 2004 is 6' 8" and has to get his ties, shirts, and pants at special tall men's shops.  So it will be a minor ordeal to replace the seven shirts, eight pairs of pants, and 4-5 ties he lost along with the senator's special gift.

Let's lose Obama in Chicago and hope he stays there! Loser!

Posted by: Mary Anne | Aug 5, 2008 5:39:53 PM

More Obama lies, why am I not surprised. He will do anything to get elected, including buying his way in, with his huge contributions each money. So, I ask you, who is really the Republican running this time around? Obama is outspending MCCain 5 to 1 and you obama zombies paint Obama as representing the little man, you guys must be drinking kool-aid! I was a lifelong loyal Democrat and now I will only vote for a woman who runs who I believe in, will vote against Obama and all of his cronies, and will push the Republican lever the rest of the way until the Dems get their act together! I'm done with them!

Posted by: Mary Anne | Aug 5, 2008 5:34:27 PM

why was an OBAMA staffer taking a cab instead of riding a bicycle, walking or riding the bus?

Posted by: deroy | Aug 5, 2008 2:45:26 PM

Why should he get a b'day present, when they don't even give their kids b'day present...

Posted by: reshas | Aug 5, 2008 12:15:32 PM

To all the people syaing McCain is too old, guess what.

McCain's mother is STILL ALIVE. Which puts him over Obama, whose mother and father are dead. McCain is therefore better, by your own logic.

Posted by: McFan | Aug 5, 2008 10:05:29 AM

Of course it wasn't his fault that he lost everything. Just like Obama he was so thrilled by a little attention from the doorman that he forgot about the important things.

"It is customary to refurbish the jets they use for their campaign ..."
-----
"Customary" -- oh. But wasn't Obama's plane BRAND NEW, when he got it during the primaries? Then re-painted rock star style, and reconfigured inside to contain the press?

Posted by: Belle Starr | Aug 4, 2008 10:24:26 PM

Marvin Nicholson left his briefcase, suitcase and gift in the cab. This guys sounds he is as inept as Senator Obama. Does Obama surround himself with such guys including 300 advisors and still not know what he is talking about. His position on energy, the war and economy is lacking.

Posted by: Martin | Aug 4, 2008 9:15:52 PM

Very magnanimous of him, after it doesn't matter, to now seat the delegates. He should not have opposed seating their delegations from the beginning. He deprived the voters of those states the right to their full vote, and stole the nomination from Hillary. BTW, I'm a life-long Democrat, not a Republican, and I'm not voting for Obama.

Posted by: Susan Starker | Aug 4, 2008 8:48:14 PM

Hmmmm! The gift was probably two new teleprompters! Let us hope this is the beginning of a losing streak for him - losing in the polls, losing in the debates, losing the coronation (go, Hillary, go!), and losing the GE!

Posted by: Beckie | Aug 4, 2008 7:39:40 PM

Obama should've taken today off.

Posted by: Vanessa | Aug 4, 2008 7:09:54 PM

All of Obama's decisions are based on polls.

Posted by: scratcher | Aug 4, 2008 6:56:14 PM

freezpop...

You are right, Obama is middle age and this would make McCain, just plain ole ANCIENT!

Happy Birthday to our future President!

OBAMA 08'

KX_1971-
It is customary to refurbish the jets they use for their campaign; McCain did the same to his "Straight Talk Express". The Obama campaign replaced the stylized flag that is the registered trademarks of North American Airlines with their campaign but left the traditional U.S. flag logo which
can be seen near the airplane identification number. So no story here; move along, move along.

Posted by: AnotherLaura | Aug 4, 2008 6:23:48 PM

What's up with people calling Senator Obama "young"? Since when has 46 or 47 been anything except well into middle age? People hit middle age when they're 30 - just ask your kids how "young" 47 seems to them - NOT. He's plenty old enough, with the gray hair to prove it. And he's also energetic, healthy, thoughtful, and smart. Unlike another candidate I could name.

So far, gas dropped when Bush rescinded the executive order not to drill off shore. Gas would indeed tumble if congress would get off their butts and do something for the citizens.

Instead, congress fiddles while Rome burns!

"The cab was yellow," recalls Nicholson, who took the cab from a friend's house to the Palmer House Hilton Hotel where the campaign staff was staying.

1. Who's the "friend"? Bill Ayers, maybe? Alice Palmer? Tony Rezko?

2. If the campaign were actually hoping to retrieve the whatever, why in the world wouldn't they say what shop it came from? (Jewelry? Tobacco?)

Posted by: Belle Starr | Aug 4, 2008 5:37:21 PM

"Obama's birthday gift will turn up, just like the fake prayer he left on his trip."
-----
And will the second-day story include what was in the briefcase, and who has which new hook in whom because of it?

What do people think was IN the briefcase (assuming that any of this did actually happen, which is assuming a lot)?

Posted by: Belle Starr | Aug 4, 2008 5:23:58 PM

Obama tapping OIL RESERVES. Now if you think that will do anything to lower fuel prices than you deserve to vote for Obama. Your not only ignorant but are being led by Obama the king of the idiots.

Just think about it how long will the reserves last and they are meant for military emergencies to last only about a month.

Posted by: Bill Clintster | Aug 4, 2008 5:06:39 PM

Don't worry its just another ploy. Someone will Obama's birthday gift will turn up, just like the fake prayer he left on his trip.

Harv, you wrote: "How can a 72-year-old man make himself into a circus clown in front of the entire country and expect to be taken seriously?"

And yet, according to the latest Real Clear Politics average of 7 polls, Sen. Obama is only maintaining a 2.3 point lead over Sen. McCain. Two of these polls actually have Sen. McCain leading. Not too bad for a "72-year-old circus clown." And even more astonishing when you consider this "72-year-old circus clown" is holding up quite well against "The One."

truth tell:
"Just...he accomplished a lot in the Chicago legislature:

Yes, Obama did.... but only because Emil Jones fed him legislation which had been processed and packaged by other legislators in E J's determination to "make me a real senator"!

For the first seven years of his state senatorship, Obama did very little...

Oh he WAS is on the beginnings of a low cost housing development which, to this day, stands incomplete and unusable.....

Posted by: just thinking: | Aug 4, 2008 4:38:06 PM

This just to clear up any confusion.
Some places I have lived in have yellow cabs owned by several different company's with various names.

In Chicago, if it's yellow than it's Yellow Cab.

So he may not have been making a joke.

Posted by: Lance | Aug 4, 2008 4:32:34 PM

"I've learned that pretty much every yellow cab in the city belongs to the Yellow Cab Company," he says.
-----
And he probably thinks that constitutes a "joke" -- too much time around John Kerry?

In 2005 BHO voted to give the oil companies big tax breaks. Given his current turn, isn't it fair to call him a hypocrite?

"Guess what? Calling me a racist isn’t going to win my vote – and I’m a Democrat."

Careful! Remember FISA's in play. The campaign may send over Jonathan Alter and Chris Matthews to harangue you on the errors of your understanding of The CHANGEling's re-definition of "racism".

Posted by: Belle Starr | Aug 4, 2008 3:58:19 PM

Give me arrogant any day over whinny, old, and stupid.

If Obama's biggest flaw is his confidence than the Republicans have already lost.

Posted by: R | Aug 4, 2008 3:52:56 PM

I don’t care what Obama does on energy or who he picks for vice president. He’s lost my vote. He allowed his campaign to send a 4-page memo to news reporters, highlighting incidents where Hillary and/or Bill Cinton had demonstrated racism. He accused small-town Americans of disliking “people who look different than them.” (In other words, racists.) He predicted that John McCain and the Republican Party would try to make people afraid of him because he “looks different” and “has a funny name.” In other words, the Republicans are racists, too. Apparently, in ObamaWorld, virtually all white people who don’t support his candidacy are racist. Guess what? Calling me a racist isn’t going to win my vote – and I’m a Democrat. McLame is looking more and more like McPresident.

lol didnt he just say how humbbling this experience is

oh thats right john mccain is claiming obama isnt humble

right hes using lies to perpetuate his failing candidacy

and you people are buyng it hook line and sinker

I would think that a $500,000 rework and repaint of his 757 would have been enough of a birthday present. Took the American Flag off of the tail and put his logo on it. Why haven't we heard about this? Is this how he spends his campaign contributions? If so, I am glad that I am not giving up any of my hard earned income.

Posted by: KC_1971 | Aug 4, 2008 3:39:16 PM

Obama needs some humble pie for his birthday instead of cake.

I heard he has "President" written on the back of his seat--aboard O-Force-One.

But according to Obama--he doesn't believe there is a perception that he is arrogant. OK

"What Senator McCain neglected to mention was that during those thirty years, he was in Washington for twenty-six of them," said the Senator. "And in all that time, he did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. He voted against increased fuel efficiency standards and opposed legislation that included tax credits for more efficient cars. He voted against renewable sources of energy. Against clean biofuels. Against solar power. Against wind power. Against an energy bill that -- while far from perfect -- represented the largest investment in renewable sources of energy in the history of this country. So when Senator McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, it's important to remember that he's been a part of that failure."

Posted by: Belle Starr | Aug 4, 2008 3:08:36 PM

So you think having a WOMAN President wouldn't be change? Obama's "new ideas" are the very same one's I and Democrats like me have long fought for. We have protested, volunteered, contributed and voted to be told that we were the old ways of politics. Excuse me? Adding color and the word change, does not change the values for which we have all stood for, one of the many reasons Obama and Clinton were both representations to their supporters. So if the change BO meant was about Politics, that argument should have been used for REPUBLICANS not the CLINTONS and US.

Posted by: irma | Aug 4, 2008 3:08:35 PM

Zaggs- It would be nice to have the McCain of 2000. I had a lot of respect for that McCain, but don't know who has shown up for this election. I prefer to keep my policy decisions here on earth - you can leave yours to the stars.

Youngandnotsostupid; You are correct. It has been a plaid suit sales man pitch and most long term DEMS hate it. Especially since he tried to diminish Bill Clinton's legacy by stating Reagan was better. Bill Clinton is in the same league as John F. Kennedy and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Fighting the good fight for the people. Imaging if the media had tried to catch FDR or JFK in a lie about their affairs? Ronald Reagan's love affair with Nancy has been twisted for all to not know that it actually started before he was divorced.

Posted by: Harv | Aug 4, 2008 3:00:32 PM

Paige, a little honesty for your debate. yes McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time, in 2007. Yet in 2007 it was as low as 77% and in 2001 voted with the republican party 61%. Obama on the other hand has never dipped below 95% in regards to voting with the democrat party. Yet Barry talks like he could ever be bipartisan or be his own man. Yeah right. Any talk of Obama being centrist or bipartisan is just that, talk while McCain has walked that walk.
And how respectful is it for Obama to lie about what McCain says (wants 100 years of war and supports Barry's 16 month withdrawal timeline) or make campaign ads that not only are complete lies but also blatant hypocrisy (McCain and oil whe Barry ALSO recieves from oil)?
As for the zodiac, leos: Pompous and patronizing, Bossy and interfering, Dogmatic and intolerant and always need to be the center of attention. Sounds bout right for Barry.
As for Virgo's (McCain) "Those born under this Sign are forever the butt of jokes for being so picky and critical (and they can be), but their 'attention to detail' is for a reason: to help others. Virgos, more than any other Sign, were born to serve, and it gives them great joy. They are also tailor-made for the job, since they are industrious, methodical and efficient. The sense of duty borne by these folks is considerable, and it ensures that they will always work for the greater good."

As a Democrat eligible to vote for the first time in this election, I am sick and tired of hearing Pelosi, McCaskill, Obama and the rest of the party leaders chanting the Bush=McCain mantra. It’s not true, and they know it. McCain may not be the ideal candidate, but he is not a clone of George Bush. I am insulted by the strategy of the Obama campaign. What they are really saying is, “We know the voters aren’t very smart, so if we can equate McCain to Bush, that will push the swing voters and undecideds to Obama’s side.” I just find this so insulting to my intelligence. Can’t the Obama campaign and their surrogates come up with something else? But of course they did – they came up with the “The Republicans are secret racists” charge. Another lame strategy that backfired on them bigtime. There are a lot of things about the Obama campaign that I dislike, but their lack of respect for the intelligence of the average voter is the thing that has driven me to bypass the presidential choices on the ballot in November. I’ll never vote for the Republicans, but I certainly will not vote for a man who has continually underestimated the intelligence of the average voter. I didn’t go to an Ivy league college and I’m nowhere smart enough to get into law school, but I’m not an idiot, either. Obama thinks I am. That’s why he isn’t getting this college student’s vote.
