Obama Campaign Responds to McCain's Congratulatory TV Ad
August 28, 2008 5:07 PM
Tonight, the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., will air a TV ad congratulating Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., on his nomination, with a nod to the fact that Obama's speech coincides with the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.
"Sen. Obama, this is truly a good day for America," McCain says in the ad, speaking to his rival. "Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So, I wanted to stop and say congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight, Senator, job well done."
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe -- who did not know the content of the ad until we read him the script -- just told us that the McCain ad is "a very nice gesture. We appreciate that. I wish more of his ads had that tone. But for tonight, we appreciate it and will congratulate him next week on his nomination."

Barack Obama is now the President of
America, we watched all night and it
was well worth it. What a wonderful
speach Mr. Obama made.

McCain and the right-wing followers, let me tell you! It is already a tragedy when millions leave their home not knowing whether their way of life will be wiped out by a storm such as Hurricane Gustav. We should be praying to our Almighty God, right now, for our fellow Americans, instead dishonoring our God and going against the Bible like your followers did, such as James Dobson's Sheppard did when he asked you and your followers to pray "abundant rain, torrential rain ... flood-advisory rain." "I'm talking about umbrella-ain't-gonna-help-you rain ... swamp-the-intersections rain." The type of people who ask this on their fellow Americans is not a Patriot! May God watch over the citizens of New Orleans, supply their every need, protect them, comfort them and keep them safe. Our prayers go out to you and we are with you every hour.

"How did he know it was a job well done when he did this ad?"
What, getting nominated? Foregone conclusion, wasn't it?

Do people forget that BILL CLINTON HAD A REPUBLICAN CONGRESS? What the HELL did Bill Clinton DO!? PLEASE TELL ME! Last time I checked, Newt was running the show.

How did he know it was a job well done when he did this ad?
He assumed it ....or was just trying to gloom onto the event and get a little positive attention
He is just an old fool...who thinks we are foolish and fall for these childish pranks.

McCain can't remember how many houses are in his and his wife's inventory (???)...while Obama doesn't know how many states are in the union...which candidate should you not vote for ???

"Made fun of the fact that McCain didn't know how many houses he had. Apparently Obama has never heard of investment property and didn't know that McCain divested himself of his wife's holdings years ago."
Apparently McCain could not just say the houses are in my wife's name. Would have looked to wussy for a big tough Republican.

McCain Talks of decency.
He has not shown any.
McCain talks of intelligence.
He has not shown any. He wants to blast Iran.
McCain Talks of experience.
He did not have any when he was beaten by Bush in NC.
McCain talks of change.
He does not know how to spell change when he follows Bush 95% of time.
AMEEN. God save America from Republican fraud.

It is stunning how little today's citizenry knows when it comes to black liberation theology and "activist" groups like the weatherman underground. The ideologies that motivated the aforementioned groups activities both then and now ought to draw a visceral reaction of repugnance. Yet, a presidential candidate affiliated with such thought is now a "viable" option. While I am no Republican, I am certainly unwilling to be complicit in electing such a person. American education is a wasteland.

even before Mccain
this has been a dirty game
with the race card raised
and the other guy blamed,
With delegates bought
And liars not caught;
With rants and fuss
People tossed beneath the bus,
With the free press gone
Sold for a song,
And the DNC
As broken as can be!
This selection was for sale!
You can talk about
change,
but the change that we'll get
won't make it to our pocket
and the visions
we were promised ,
vapid at best,
disappear like all the rest.

Obama doesn't even have the class or dignity to accept McCain's congratulations with good grace.
Then he whines somemore that it's too bad McCain isn't like this every day.
This from a man who has made ads making fun of McCain's age. Made fun of the fact that McCain didn't know how many houses he had. Apparently Obama has never heard of investment property and didn't know that McCain divested himself of his wife's holdings years ago.

values08 -
Obama announced his run for State Senate in '95 from Wm. Ayers house. (Not his run for the presidency).
But Obama surely lied, and more than once, when he described Ayers as "just a neighbor".
No wonder he wants to sue to stop that ad. It will destroy his candidacy and he knows it.
That's why there's so much buyer's remorse in the DNC. Hillary is shocked her media friends didn't release all this earlier.
Posted by: Peach | Aug 28, 2008 9:31:06 PM
values08 - half the articles written on Jake's blog won't be permitted under an Obama presidency if how he's treating the Wm. Ayers ad is any indication.
Sicking the Justice Department on stations that air the ad is so over-wrought, it reeks of mental instability.
What's he going to do -- tell the lawyers "Make those bad men stop saying such bad things about me?" It sounds like third grade.

"Obama even announced his decicion to run for POTUS at Ayers house!"
Values08,
I know the GOP loves the low information voter who is dumb enough to fall for any smear they toss out.
But you could at least get the smear right.
Obama announced his run for President in Springfield to thousands of cheering supporters.

McCain: "I wanted to stop and say congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day."
Yes, it was so lucky, what a coincidence that his speech falls on such a historic day. It is amazing.
McCain is nicely pointing out what the MSM is hiding. What a joke, the
DNC picked Obama early on and has been conducting a marketing campaign. Hence, they picked the convention week to get the biggest bang for the buck. Clinton
and all of the other contenders for the Democratic nomination never had a chance, since the DNC leaders and MSM were in the tank for Obama. Wake up, America, it's all a lie.
Posted by: BRinChicago | Aug 28, 2008 9:12:42 PM
Ryan C-I too am worried about free speech --that is why I am concerned about Obama's lawyers threatening to sue any tv station that runs an ad detailing Obama's relationship with William Ayers. Ayers was the leader of the group that bombed the Pentagon. Obama even announced his decicion to run for POTUS at Ayers house! You can watch the ad currently online.

A lot of things have been said about Barack Obama in the past, and I'm not sure I agree with all of them, but one thing is beyond question: the man is a socialist. There is no argument there. Everything in his life up to this point has involved the advancement of socialism. The problem is, the US cannot afford to have a socialist president at this time. Our country is 9 trillion dollars in debt and the last thing we can afford to do is elect a president that is promising trillions in new spending. We have to go in the opposite direction. We have to cut back on spending so we can start paying down the enormous debt. It is also unfair to saddle future generations with debt to pay for social welfare programs for people today. If we continue down the path to full socialism at this time by implementing Obama's socialist healthcare system, we will destroy any chance the nation has to balance the budget and pay down the debt. If we enact the oppressive tax increases that Obama is proposing, we will bring the economy to a screeching halt and people's retirement funds will plummet in value. We just can't afford any more socialism in America at this time.

"Ryan C- You and the rest of the far left have a shortsighted view of Iraq. You think if everyone comes home and we pull a curtain around us no one will touch us."
Ummm bringing our troops home from a war that was entered into based on lies does not equal isolationism (yes I know your pesky black and white thinking got the best of you).
It means removing our combat forces.
We still have over 100 worldwide bases and 11 aircraft carrier groups.
We will continue to enjoy the ability to project military power anywhere in the world. And we'll be able to do so with a military that is no longer struggling to maintain readiness.
"But the real world is global. We leave Iraq unstable and we will pay the price in the long run. "
We've already paid a hefty price in terms of international credibility, strain upon our treasury and the degradation of our military readiness.
Obama wants to become more involved in the world and less unilateral. Thru cooperation with other nations is our only hope for security.
McCain shaking his fist at Russia is a poor substitute for diplomacy.

jschmidt,
Funding bills for Iraq submitted since 2006 have included timetables for withdraw which Bush vetoed.
I want our troops out of Iraq, not sitting in Iraq without funding.
Kind of stark contrast to you and your buddy McCain saying the veterans cost us too much.
Support the troops is no some empty phrase you recite at Republican rallies.
It means actual support of the troops which means you fund them while they are in the field and you fund the VA to take care of them when they come home,
It means you keep your promises to them regarding healthcare and the GI BIll.
It also means you do not treat their lives as expendable by engaging in war based upon lies against a nation that was no threat to anyone.

To manage his campaign McCain has resurrected the Swift Boat team of Karl Rove, champion of lies, dirty tricks and smears. Unless and until McCain personally renounces these thugs, anything he says anywhere, anytime has to be suspect. McCain the Maverick of 2000 is dead - and is reborn as McCain the Mudslinger of 2008.

Ernie- Ryan-Lets see what happenned between 2000 and 2006- Well the US has been through an attack on 2 major cities, a war on terrorism in 2 countries, 2 hurricanes that forced evacuation of major cities, wild fires, floods in the midwest, a tech bubble bursting, a credit bubble bursting, and high oil prices. New Orleans and Louisiana were run by Democrats who didn;t evacuate the city when they should have. The tech bubble which gave Clinton record revenues, forced Bush to cut taxes which alleviated the affects of the bubble and 9/11. The subprime mess started in the 70s when the Democrats forced banks to lend to unqualified areas if the banks were to expand. The mortgages were securitized during the Clinton Administration. Last Sept Democrats decided student loan lenders were making too much money so they forced the lenders to charge less interest. When the credit crisis hit, lenders decided to back out of student loans. Democrats would admit them made a mistake so they forced the Dept of Education to back the loans. High oil prices are a result of envrinomentalists controlling drilling since 1981 when Democrats stopped offshore drilling. We have a supply shortage but the Dems continue to oppose drilling. We have 5.5% unemployment, relatively low. The dollar is rising and stock market holding its own. The economy will survive. Bush has done alright considering he has faced more crisis than any President since FDR. He has taken back the power of the Presidency which Democrats whittled away for 40 years. We have not had an attack on the US since 2001. McCain has disagreed with Bush on many occasions and he even disagreed with Reagan on sending troops to Lebanon. He didn't want to send them. I'm voting for McCain. He has the knowledge and abilities of Biden and more. So I'm sorry if the Republicans had to spend a bit of money of the 6 years.

Posted by: Ryan C | Aug 28, 2008 8:01:29 PM
"So who would like looking after taxpayer money, the Dems who throw it out like water or McCain who looks after it?"
Being supportive of a never ending war in Iraq that has already cost us $1,500,000,000 is looking after taxpayer money?
I'll take the Democrats "wasting" money on veterans and honoring an important civil rights leader over that.
Posted by: Ryan C | Aug 28, 2008 7:59:47 PM

Posted by: Ernest T Bass | Aug 28, 2008 7:58:57 PM
Remember why McCain voted against the MLK date. It was money. He wanted a holiday dropped so the government would lose money. That is the only reason and later he admitted the mistake. He did the same thing recently with the veterans bill. It was too much money the Dems were handing out with no offset. So who would like looking after taxpayer money, the Dems who throw it out like water or McCain who looks after it?

Oil is what I will continue to demand,
I will invade Iran with American blood
And my itchy finger on the Atomic bomb.
Who needs Social Security, America?

Invest in seven houses as I have done
Sub-prime mortgage is really cheap.

Does it surprise any of you that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S's: Slavery, Secession, Segregation and now Socialism.
Do any of your remember Democrat President John F. Kennedy is lauded as a proponent of civil rights. However, Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil rights Act while he was a senator, as did Democrat Senator Al Gore, Sr. And after he became president, John F. Kennedy was opposed to the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King that was organized by A. Phillip Randolph who was a black Republican. President Kennedy, through his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI on suspicion of being a Communist in order to undermine Dr. King.

Oldspice,
I didn't see the comments that way.
I saw the comments(including my own) as expressing what utter gall John McCain has referencing MLK when he voted against a holiday for him and supported effort in his state to ignore the holiday.
Now some in the right wing are obviously showing their racism.
But John mcCain? I don't think he's a racist.

Well at least he HONORS him by attending the various the various celebrations of his life.... which is more than Obama does.
Obama this year was much too busy selling Obama to to venerate Martin Luther King!
However, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and McCain all took the time to show their respect!

Kathy,
I agree, so transparent. He just ran an about Tiny, with lies of Obama ripping throughout the ad. Now turns around and wants to congratulate him. McCain is the worse type of politican, no morals, McCain. Can't be trusted with the Truth.
Has no answers for the problems facing this country, so he just cries wolf about Obama.
Posted by: Brenda | Aug 28, 2008 6:36:42 PM
Mary,
It was decided that Martin Luther King deserved a Federal Holiday nearly 25 years ago.
Even John McCain now believes in that.
But thank you for sharing your shock and horror that Martin Luther King has a holiday celebrating his legacy....even if its nearly 25 years after the fact .
Posted by: Ryan C | Aug 28, 2008 6:33:51 PM
Ryan, I'm not sure what point your making - Yes, McCain said that in retrospect that he should have voted for the holiday but my point was simply that many of these posts imply his original opposition to it was somehow racially motivated - which is patently untrue - the fact that McCain said the things you quoted shows that even more so.
Posted by: oldspice | Aug 28, 2008 6:28:56 PM
That is a nice gesture from McCain, but I wonder why no so few news outlets are reporting today's major campaign ad story - that Obama is threatening stations with a lawsuit if they play McCain's ads, released today, about Obama's link to William Ayers. Many stations, FOX for example, haven given in to the pressure and are refusing to play McCain's ads. McCain's ads do not contain any factual misinformation - why should Obama object to the American people hearing them?
Posted by: momobella | Aug 28, 2008 6:28:26 PM
We have a clear choice:
The guy who voted against a Holiday for MLK. And a guy who's political patron and mentor is a domestic terrorist.
Some election.
Posted by: Sammy | Aug 28, 2008 6:28:01 PM
As a senior citizen, I can think of at least 10 Americans who are more worthy of a Holiday to be named after them then Martin Luther King.
PS. My Granparents and Mother was named King and they were wonderful people caring people too.

CD in NC,
Feel free to look at Obama's website. There are many detailed plans listed.
Was there any area in which you were particularly interested in?
You did mention foreign policy.
Obama wants a timetable for troop withdraw negotiated with the Iraqi gov't. He;s been saying that for years. Bush administration is about to agree to just that. John McCain argues against any timetable.
He was also change the tone of the American government with respect to our allies. No more unilateral middle fingers to the rest of the world. No more reactionary vs engaged diplomacy. No more empty fist waving based on advice from foreign agents.
Obama wants to focus on nuclear arms securement, non proliferation and reduction. As opposed to the Bush admin which outted a CIA agent who was working on black market nukes.
But feel free to ask about something more specific.

McCain's words on why he voted against Martin Luther King day
"Even in this most idealistic of nations, we do not always take kindly to being reminded of what more we can do, or how much better we can be, or who else can be included in the promise of America," McCain said. "We can be slow as well to give greatness its due, a mistake I made myself long ago when I voted against a federal holiday in memory of King. I was wrong and eventually realized that, in time to give full support for a state holiday in Arizona.

McCain is playing politics. He voted against recognizing Dr King's day. Carl Rove is running his campaign and that “my friend” is obvious. Obama will be our next president and only God can stop that. Change is what this country need and that is exactly what Obama will bring. So for all the Obama haters, stop whining and join the change train. People of the USA let us take back our country from the failed policies of the republicans.

And he voted against the MLK holiday? People of color in this country should rise up and unequivocally denounce the McShame for such audacity.
Posted by: miguel | Aug 28, 2008 6:16:15 PM
oldspice, just some fact check: the MLK vote in Az to ignore the federal holiday would not have added any holiday days to the calendar. It would have replaced another holiday.

What exactly ARE his plans, JT? Change? What kind of "change"? We have no clue whatsoever what his idea of "change" is! The ol' phrase "change from Bush" is generic and means nothing to me. What will he do about our foreign policy challenges? What about domestic issues that don't target a specific group of Americans (ie the "rich")? Citizens are citizens...we all are connected one way or another. Obama needs to tell me what he is going to do besides turn us into a socialist failure.

I sincerely believe that Martin Luther King would be ashamed of the socialist, communist, Marxist, racist candidate named Barack Obama. He won this candidate by default, not the will of the voters.
My grandparents were named King too.

Geez, lots of gullible people here. Anyone watched a campaign before? Everything is done for the benefit of the candidate. McCain simply calculated a magnanimous gesture would work to his benefit moreso than an attack. As Marc Ambinder said, "McCain's ad calls attention to McCain. It's not a pause of anything." As for how McCain really feels about the moment, who knows.

Electing McCain would fulfill Dr. King's dream.
Americans did not use "color of skin" to deny Obama the nomination.
Now they will use "content of character" standard to elect John Mccain.
John McCain - the American president Americans have been waiting for.

PEOPLE, remember McSame voted against the MLK holiday... How genuine can this be???
I don't want a president who forgets how many houses he has (7).
Besides Bush has plenty of experience and look what he did to the country...

"The O will look stupid and devisive if he rips into McCain during his address."
He's not going to. That's what Biden's for.

This is nothing more than a transparent effort on McCain's part to steal some of Obama's thunder.
ALL WE HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT THIS IS THE SAME McCAIN WHO VOTED AGAINST A HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATE MARTIN LUTHER KING!

The day before MLK day this year, Obama spoke at King's church.
Obama also was on hand for the groundbreaking of the Martin Luther King Memorial.
John McCain voted against a federal holiday for Martin Luther King and he supported Arizona's efforts to not recognize the federal holiday.
The McCain campaign swaying voters one lie at a time.

I have learned about Obama's plans for the future of America from his TV ads. I wish McCain could do the same, instead of attacking/ smearing his opponent or showing off some phony act to steal the spot light.

McCain has ran such a negative campaign for the past month it's hard to believe he's sincere about this.

This is both a classy and strategic move. The O will look stupid and devisive if he rips into McCain during his address.
Absolutely brilliant!!!

Agreed, although I wouldn't go so far as to say everything is a ploy...there is some integrity over there too...
However, all this "Don't criticize the stage! So what if it was designed by Britney Spears' design team, making it funny enough for an SNL skit?" I bet Obama will be good tonight, but bland, as usual.
Frankly, I have never been inspired by him and look back on his 2004 convention speech as disingenuous and power hungry. He knows how to hit the right notes, but I sense he is too clever by half...an evasive lawyer. I know, I deal with them all the time... "It would be fair to say..." "let me be as clear as I can be..." he has all the evasive, conclusory phraseologies down.
I just can't get into the hype, it sickens me. I am weird though, I guess, and cynical, sue me.
One more thought before I go...I am sick and tired of the idea that if Obama loses, it would be because of race, not policy. You think republicans wouldn't elect Colin Powell if he ran or C. Rice, etc.? Really? Colin would probably beat Obama and McCain, in my guess.

In memory of Martin Luther King and this historic, day, remember that Obama was unable to celebrate either his birth or his death earlier this year because he was too busy campaigning!
Of course Hillary and Bill Clinton, and John McCain DID take the time to celebrate the life of this magnificent visionary!

I'm not voting for Obama but I too want to congratulate all African Americans on this historic day.
I know you are very proud.

That will be too little, too late;
It's a class act the first time around; the second time, it's kind of tarnished and dingy...... like polishing the old silverplate with the black showing through..... not "company ready".

That's why this former Hillary Democrat loves John McCain.
I'm voting for strength, character, judgement, patriotism first--policies last.

That wasn't classy - that was politics. Remember this is the man who voted against recognizing MLK's birthday. Oh, he finally saw the light - but only a few years ago.

Too little, too late. The Country already knows McCain is a farce and full of the same Karl Rove tactics. Nice try but you can't fool us!!!
Go Obama!
Posted by: joereed007 | Aug 28, 2008 5:34:00 PM
that said, the obama camp and plouffe and hypocritical career politicians who wouldn't know change if it was filling their pockets by the millions
Posted by: chris | Aug 28, 2008 5:31:02 PM
class vs arrogance
and of course, the copycat obama camp will do the same -- just as he went to the middle east after mccain asked...
what about a townhall debate, barack? no, no teleprompter
Posted by: AJ | Aug 28, 2008 5:29:53 PM
karl rove wouldn't even pretend to be nice with an ad like this.....classy ad by any reasonable standard....
Posted by: chris | Aug 28, 2008 5:29:39 PM
Do people really buy it ? I mean he spent all the last month running attack ads know he congratulates him ?
Fraud !

Good for McCain.
I hope that this is sign for the campaign to come.
Sadly being realistic, this is likely just a ploy attempting to address his campaign's negativity.
