Obama Disagrees With Nevadan Assailing McCain's Vietnam Service

August 17, 2008 2:10 PM

RENO, NEV. - At a town hall meeting at Wooster High School just now, a questioner whom Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., had called on, assailed the Vietnam service of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"He was the fattest prisoner that got off the plane!" said the man. "He doesn't want to talk about how he turned in all those names."

With some impatience in his voice, Obama interrupted the man to ask if he had a question, and after the man offered a couple queries, Obama said, "Respectfully, I'm going to disagree with you when it comes to McCain and his service. I think his policies are terrible, I think his service was honorable."

The crowd applauded.

The moment stood in stark contrast with a moment in the 2004 election, when a town hall questioner told President George W. Bush about his then-opponent, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., "'We got a candidate for president out here with two self-inflicted scratches, and I take that as an insult.'"

"Well, I appreciate that, thank you," said Bush, who himself did not serve in Vietnam.

evil is as the republicans do.

John Kerry had many, many fellow vets who came out in support of him. He is a good and decent man who has done a lot to serve his country, whether you agree with his ideas or not. The "swiftboating" was a purely political move that was despicable. The Republicans have lost their moral center and have now adopted these kinds of tactics on a permanent basis.

It used to be that the Republicans were the party of fiscal conservatism. This has not been true in a long time, but people are still clinging to that idea............... The truth is that Bush inherited a healthy economy and within 8 years gave us a massive, massive deficit which we will have to repay (it ain't going away, folks). He launched a wildly expensive and LONG war, and at the same time he turned around to his rich friends (we're talking extremely rich) and gave them a tax cut.................. INCREASING COSTS AND LOWERING INCOME AT THE SAME TIME IS NOT BEING FISCALLY CONSERVATIVE. The Democrats will do a better job of restoring our economy and bringing it back into line.

Obama is an honorable man, and that is refreshing to see. He refuses to take cheap shots at his opponent. He wants to keep the campaign focused on the issues. Some people just don't know what to make of it.

George - Obama is an entitlement spending disaster. McCain is a foreign policy disaster. Why are you voting for a candidate that continues to advocate uncontrolled spending. To me your vote is part of the problem.

Republicans have a long history of leading the country to support the values of equality and to more prosperous times. Studies have shown that more taxes on the rich ultimately results in less overall tax revenues, due to the rich have fewer dollars to work with in the economy or they work harder to effectively shield their income from taxes. The Dem candidate would raise taxes, and the middle-class and those near retirement age would feel the hurt the most.

obama has class, and good manners. can you say that about mccain? (i won't even bring up bush, 'cause we know he has neither)

You have got to google-- bop-o-rama --the numbers are really interesting. How do they stack up against the daily GalluP? McCain vs Obama?

Ben Straub, Great. Throw away your vote. When you could help a great candidate like Obama you choose to vote "Other". Hey, how about this idea...Don´t waste our time by posting that you´re choosing a write-in candidate and don´t waste your time and vote at all.

Cindyct- I appreciate your position, but be careful with your hyperbole. I don't think "butchers" is a word you want to use in defending abortion. Again, my point is the unborn are defenseless and are completely dependent on their mother's for their well-being. The mothers do have other options for unwanted pregnancies.

Even after cheating John McCain was still lacking in the answers he gave Warren.
I am amazed that people who consider themselves the religious right can support a man who has stood before God and community on more than one occassion and promised to forsake all other for the rest of his life only to trade his first wife in for a younger and richer model (wife) who has been on drugs and stolen money from her own charity and even steals cookie recipes!! No wonder he offered to enter her in the wet t-shirt competition, this IS HIS MORAL CENTER. I am sure when he becomes president he will sponsor a wet t-shirt contest to find the hottest woman in america. This certainly will solve ALL of our Domestic and Foreign problems.

Once and for all, the "Swift-boating" of John Kerry was effective because it exposed the true John Kerry. He didn't answer it because he knew it to be true and attempting to answer it would only have exposed him more.

Goner, I'll explain how you can be Pro-Life and "Pro-War". First, just because someone thinks military action is necessary doesn't make them "pro-war". Your characterization betrays your bias. Secondly, were the Allies "pro-war" when they defeated Germany and Japan. How many lives were saved by their actions. Was this not "Pro-Life." Thirdly, respecting human life begins and ends with how you treat the most defenseless among us. Anyone who can end the life of the most defenseless loses any credibility when protesting military actions on the basis of loss of life.

Obama dare not speak the truth about McCain: anyone who could be 1/2 of the "McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Law" (which should be an affront to ANY American who believes in Freedom of [Political] Speech) must have been brainwashed in 'Nam by the Communists; only a left wing loony (like Russ Feingold) would have ever come up with something like that bill. McCain's cosponsoring of it proves to me that he is no different than the Communists who brainwashed him. And Obama is even MORE left wing than McCain. Welcome to the USSA, Comrade! America has already lost!

I am amazed that obama made such a commendable reply to the disrespectful person without the dissection of his 300+ advisers. With that many people trying to digest and provide advice to an issue it is very likely that the issue would have been resolved before the 300 could come up with a solid flip-floppable solution.
Vote confidence, Vote McCain!

Can someone please explain to me how someone can be Pro-Life and Pro-War?

Posted by: Goner | Aug 18, 2008 1:06:34 PM

Republicans are scared. You all know Mccain is a moderate and he does not share the conservatives or republican's veiws. Just look at one of his choices for VP... Joe Lieberman... Pro-choice. Mccain is supposed to be so against abortion, well how can you pick you right hand person and he is for a woman's choice.. Help me me understand that..

Very good reponse from Obama. I will go 3rd party or write in Paul, but I do hope Obama wins over McCain. McCain's militancy is terrible.

S Adams said "George Bush was elected as governor by the people of the state of Texas. Texas is a republican state, no one bought Bush his governership. That said, when he was running for president, the media was relentless about his past." Yes, it's too bad that the majority of the records had been sealed, so the information was not available to be reported to the public.
