Obama Meets With 'Swift Boats' Bankroller T. Boone Pickens

August 17, 2008 1:07 PM

RENO, Nev. -- At the Summit Casino-Resort, Sunday morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., met with oil man T. Boone Pickens, now a proponent of weaning the United States from foreign fuel, who was a funder of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that helped defeat Sen. John Kerry's Democratic presidential run in 2004.

"How does it feel meeting with someone who tore down your Democratic colleague in the last election?" a reporter asked Obama.

"You know, he has a lot longer track record than that," Obama said. "He has been doing -- He is, you know, a legendary entrepreneur and there are a lot of things that I think we have to unify the country around -- it is having an intelligent energy policy. Everybody knows if we keep on going on the same track that we are going, that we are giving our wealth away.  We are funding both sides of the war on terror.

"We are going to be, over the long term, putting enormous pressure on ordinary families here in America who just aren't going to be able to afford, you know, skyrocketing gasoline prices and home heating prices," Obama continued. "So, this is one of those issues that, I think, should unify the country -- and that is what we are going to be talking about."

Pickens gave the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth $3 million for its controversial and often fact-challenged campaign to discredit Kerry's Vietnam War record.

I've read enough posts to know that people just want to be negative.
Okay, maybe at some point, T. Boone was more interested in money than anything else, but please remember.... he's 80! Does anyone grasp how old that is? We're talking about checking out within a decade.
Do you think an 80 year old is only concerned about money? Chello. He wants to have a legacy. Something for people to remember him by. And, why not??? Here's a guy that can give us real insight into the energy crisis. Here's someone that really cares and wants to make a difference. Here's someone we ALL should be supporting...NOT tearing down. Republican....democrat...no matter....we need direction when it comes to energy. Where else are we going to get it?

Obama is a US citizen. He does not have duel citizenship with Indonesia or Kenya. He is an American and was born in America. Why does this keep coming up? No one is questioning McCain who was born in Panama.

It's time to start taxing personal automobiles, SUVs, old-pick-up trucks that have poor gas mileage. We need to make mandaotry the catalytic converters to clean up the environment. These are responsible for pollution and increase our dependency on foreign oil. The target for miles per gallon on new cars was to be near 50 mpg, but due to SUVs we are far below achieving the improvements needed in gas mileage. As boat usuage increases, we need to mandate cleaner boat engines.

What does it mean if Obama was an Indonesian citizen? Did he say he never was, can he not have dual citizenship and still be president, etc.?

All the swiftboaters are chiefly responsible for the USA selecting a National Guard shirk over a combat veteran in 2004 and they got what they deserved. Ole TBONE knows how bad he failed and now hopes to wriggle out from under a crushing payback. Chief Justice John Roberts went to Florida to help get the 2000 selection stamped and now sits atop the SUPREMES as his reward...In the meantime, the Constitution sputters and wheezes to what end?????? Film at eleven folks!!!!

To all those who support the Pickens Plan, developing American energy resources and increasing our energy independence – a national survey shows about three-fourths (74%) of Americans believe the Pickens goals can be accomplished over the next 10 years…but two-thirds (65.7%) believe Congress will block it through use of laws and regulations. Keep the heat on the politicians to support efforts to reduce foreign oil imports as the November election approaches.

“Obama Meets With ‘Swift Boats’ Bankroller T. Boone Pickens” What’s that got to do with addressing the problems created by $4 gas or solving the nation’s energy problems? As a supporter of the Pickens Plan, it is a disservice to Americans who want energy solutions that ABC chose to turn the Obama-Pickens meeting into some partisan confrontation. There’s no evidence the meeting was anything but cordial and that Obama was receptive to the basic Pickens concept. ABC owes an apology to Obama, Pickens and the rest of us concerned about the energy issue. We’ll look for it on tonight’s newscast with Charlie What’s-His-Name – you know, the guy who was shutout from moderating a presidential debate this fall.

It appears that, in the first month since the public became aware of it, the Pickens Plan has gained significant public awareness and support. I just saw a national poll by Sacred Heart University that says 74% of Americans believe it’s the way to go in reducing reliance on foreign energy and assuring our energy future. The problem is two-thirds also believe that Congress will not allow the Pickens concept to be implemented. The poll may be right, unfortunately, on both counts – the Pickens Plan is the best approach and the Congress will dilute the plan’s potential

Well, it appears the anti-Boone, anti-wind forces have seized upon discussion of the Obama-Pickens meeting to spread their misleading fiction. Let’s try this: If the lights don’t flicker off and on during the GOP national convention, we’ll just consider wind a reliable energy source and you can quit spreading untruths about wind energy. Minnesota gets nearly 5% of its electrical energy from wind power so, if the doubters are right, the lights will go out every time the wind stops blowing in the Twin Cities. I think we’ll find that the lights stay on – and it’s the doubters who are truly in the dark.

JED:

So What!!!! Did not senator Obama also say that he's a fellow citizen of the world? Is not Indonesia a part of the world community? Your comments about him being once a citizen of Indonesia, as a child, is silly!!!!

The young senator was born as a United States citizen....And John McCain, on the other hand, was born in Panama...

Go figure!!!!

I don't like to American leader because I think every will be same as W Bush. I hope Americans would not shose a president as W Bush, because he makes whole world mass. Thanks Americans for chossing right a person. Please be aware and careful.

Posted by: sonam | Aug 18, 2008 5:15:20 AM

Obama keep talking about strengthening the economy and world peace..Americans do not want to hear that garbage. We are interested in the stronger leader..one who knows how to pick a fight and start a war. Military power is real power not economic power and we need to show the world who has has power. We probably can take on Russia,China, Iran and North Korea at the same time. There you go! McCain is the stronger leader because he is a war man and good at starting wars..War is good for the economy..can't you see how good our economy is now? I am voting for McCain..you can vote for Obama and a strong economy and world peace...LOSER! McCain 08!

T. Boone is 80 and he wants
to make a significant contribution
in achieving energy independence
using the money he already has.

He's not cozying up to presidential
candidates with the expectation
that such contacts will enable him
to make even more money.

Posted by: anon | Aug 18, 2008 3:13:11 AM

Be it McCain or Obama....they both are not viable canidates. Pickens is just keeping with his own agenda and that is money...cozy up to the possoble winner. The wool is over so many folks eyes on this global warming crap, it is the perfect opportunity for green to be made upon " green". Science, has truely been lacking in our schools....public or private.

Posted by: 4thetruth | Aug 18, 2008 2:13:24 AM

T. Boone Pickens is advocating wind seriously, not so much out of environmental concern as self-interest, given he's channeled well over a billion dollars of his own resources into windmills. In contrast, he also advocates the oxymoronic, "clean coal" because I think he's got investments tied up in Canada to convert coal into gas suitable for vehicles. Like the Dr. Rick Warren, he knows how to implement his purpose and self-driven agenda into politics.

They are both politicians. Politicians are about as low as lawyers...and most are both. The only thing that keeps me away from Democrats is that they want to "subsidize" the sorry people who have 10 kids with about 5 different partners and don't work, and democrats have no clue when it comes to national security. Until you get a person that runs solely to make the USA better(some one who already has made a lot money on their own)...we will always be stuck with politicians who are in the pockets of the lobbyist with the most money. It doesnt matter if they are Republican or Democrat...they all suck...and those of you that argue the merit of either party are pretty silly to think things will be any different after the election.

Stanley, What planet are you living on. This state of wealth you are enjoying everyone else is not. If McCain is your idea of smart, whow I hate to see any more dumbness.

Posted by: HarryjHemphill | Aug 18, 2008 12:38:47 AM

Wasnt that pathetic? The dummy Barack is so scared to lose that now is pacting with anybody including the devil Pickens. Next lets get him together with Rove and Chenye, they
also have ideas about oil...

Posted by: edroma | Aug 18, 2008 12:34:03 AM

Wow, we have sure become a distrusting people. As regards to the neo-conservative republicans our distrust is justified, but ,for now, I think we ought to give Obama some leeway and see what he does with it.
There's no doubt that we need a comprehensive energy policy and I believe Obama's discussion with Pickens is heading in the right direction. It would be of little benefit for Obama to use the energy crisis to line his pockets (as some suggest) and a tremendous benefit to him, if he is successful.
