Obama Pushes Back on GOP Tire Pressure Attack: "It's Like These Guys Take Pride in Being Ignorant"

August 05, 2008 3:47 PM

At a town hall meeting in Berea , Ohio, today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, pushed back against the GOP attack  on his advice to a voter last week that having a tuned up car and fully inflated tires would help save energy.

"Let me make a point about efficiency, because my Republican opponents - they don’t like to talk about efficiency," Obama said.

"You know the other day I was in a town hall meeting and I laid out my plans for investing $15 billion a year in energy efficient cars and a new electricity grid and somebody said, 'well, what can I do? what can individuals do?' Obama recalled.

"So I told them something simple," Obama said. "I said, 'You know what? You can inflate your tires to the proper levels and that if everybody in America inflated their tires to the proper level, we would actually probably save more oil than all the oil we'd get from John McCain drilling right below his feet there, or wherever he was going to drill.'"

(Note: that's not accurate, as we fact-checked last week. But the larger point about energy savings is correct.)

"So now the Republicans are going around - this is the kind of thing they do. I don't understand it! They’re going around, they're sending like little tire gauges, making fun of this idea as if this is 'Barack Obama's energy plan.'

"Now two points, one, they know they're lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by 3 to 4 percent. It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant.

"You know, they think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework. Because this is serious business. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference."

How is drilling for more oil a hoax while inflating your tires is a solution?

Posted by: Freeper | Aug 6, 2008 1:54:53 PM

Greater supply does not necessarily mean lower gas prices. If world demand continues to grow then the price will remain high. Gas prices have shot up a lot in the last couple of years, but historically they are not that far out of line with real value (as compared with silver for example). BUT even if drilling does not lower price, it STILL needs to be done to work toward energy independance. WE NEED TO STOP BUYING ARAB/TYRANT-CONTROLLED OIL. Plus new drilling creates THOUSANDS of NEW US JOBS. Call it the NEW NEW DEAL AND START DRILLING NOW!

The math coming up with 800,000 barrels of savings is seriously flawed. NHTSA survey said about one fourth of the cars on the road have ONE or more underinflated tires. So the estimate of savings, at best would be about 1/4th of 800,000. They also quickly lumped in tune-ups, air filters and 'correct' oil to inflate (pun intended) the 'savings'. Nice try. Conservation is fine, but it will never fuel growth. WE NEED MORE OIL.

"Notice noone has yet been able to explain how Obama plans to reduce our electic consumption by 15% at the same time adding 1 MILLION new electric cars to the power grid. "

Answer: Hope

The price of oil dropped $20 per barrel when Bush ended the executive order against off-shore drilling.

Gas will go below $3 per gallon when congress acts.

Even high school economic students know about supply and demand.

This nation's oil supply can be one of it's greatest sources of wealth. We'd be idiots not to exploit it, particularly now that energy has become a national security issue.

The environmentalists are 100% wrong about drilling by the way. All not drilling will do is allow other countries who are a lot less careful about the environment than we are to drill.

LogicalUS, you're exactly correct. See my post below re: nuclear energy.

Posted by: marylou | Aug 6, 2008 12:44:06 PM

Anybody who believes Obama won't support nuclear energy is not researching. One of his biggest donors is Exelon and, in fact, they're one of the reasons he voted for Cheney's Energy Bill. But that aside, they bought him to squash legislation that would have made a nuclear facility alert its neighbors when a breach occurred - thanks to him they only have to report if they think they should (kind of the fox guarding the hen house).

At any rate, Exelon wants to build 16 new nuclear facilities across the U.S. And knowing how Obama lies and going from past behavior, I'm betting they'll get them under an Obama administration.

So for all those who oppose McCain due to nuclear energy - remember that Obama is not who he appears to be, he's just a vision of agreeability to whomever he's addressing to pander for a vote.

Notice noone has yet been able to explain how Obama plans to reduce our electic consumption by 15% at the same time adding 1 MILLION new electric cars to the power grid. That is in addition to the additional amount of infrastructure which would have to be constructed to provide the addtional electricity utilizing heavy equipment which can only run on oil related products.

The short answer is he can't and it was a vapid, "pie in the sky" proposal meant to distract his know-nothing followers to coo over.

Don't you all ever get tired of propping up Obama?

He said that merely inflating our tires would replace ALL the oil that could be gained by expanding domestic drilling.

McCain agreed that we should all do our part to conserve by keeping our tires properly inflated, but rightly pointed out that that isn't an energy plan (unlike his own "Conserve More, Produce More, Invent More" plan of action for energy independence.

Note to Obama: we know you don't get it. That's the problem. And when you're called out on your ignorance you cry like a little kid.

Is Obama for domestic drillling or against it today? Is he for tapping the reserves or against it today? Or have today's polls not come out yet to tell him what he's for or against?

Posted by: marylou | Aug 6, 2008 12:37:47 PM

Problem is, both parties have went off to loopy land. Both parties i don't believe are about "america". Obama i know hates this country he's already shown that. McCain, they only thing i could see good about him is he was ex-mill, and i'm sure does love his country and paid a big price for it. I have to at least give him that. So in my swing vote i believe RON PAUL WOULD OF BEEN THE BEST CHOICE, seeing how we can't have a man who would really changes things... we'll have to do with McCain. Maybe he can upset some people and get things moving. Reagan did just the same way.

Posted by: GodFear | Aug 6, 2008 12:28:31 PM

Obamas really onto something here. He should team up with the Jimmy Carter think-tank and go even further. Imagine the oil savings if drivers wear sweaters in the winter and don't run the heater. What if we pushed cars into parking spots instead of burning gas to do so. We could only drive to places that are downhill. The possiblities are endless.

Hope. Change.

Posted by: notafool | Aug 6, 2008 12:25:29 PM

Bottom line: Media trumps up Obama just to make it appear as if he has a chance. McBush will win in a landslide.

Posted by: Al | Aug 6, 2008 12:05:07 PM

yeah, Obama's tire pressure idea is stupid. Everyone should just follow McCain's improved light bulb plan from April 2007, that would be much better.
(please note the sarcasm)

i hope McCain wins so all of his supporters get exactly what they need!
When McBush wins remember YOU ASKED FOR IT!! LOL

Posted by: Al | Aug 6, 2008 11:50:25 AM

@ mcgruff:
Your point being? Don't check your tires to improve efficiency because there's a chance some are inflated properly?

This is what the rightwing mouthpieces are hoping the populace will fall for. Talk about grasping at straws. They know the facts aren't on their side, so they resort to ridiculous talking points like these-- knowing it will successfully sway the non-thinkers.

Obama is like most politicians. He wants power. He comes across as full of himself.

No one really knows who he is -- since he plays to the audience so he can hear the cheers.

Posted by: Angela | Aug 6, 2008 11:47:57 AM

but if the half with bad tire pressure fix theirs, then you end up with a gain genius.

Posted by: Andrew | Aug 6, 2008 11:47:15 AM

If people check their tires and half of them are under inflated and half are over inflated what do you gain. 0. I knew you could figure it out.

Aaron sd:
"with new ideas"

What new ideas would those be? You must be very young or you would recognize his ideas are virtually the same as Jimmy Carter's of the 1970's in both energy and foreign policy??

Isn't it amazing what people delude themselves to believing with "wishful thinking", lets go look at Chicago's Obama district and witness for ourselves the wonder of Obama's power to tranform the world, shall we?

Of course not, because Obama did nearly nothing for this district but now the "Messiah" is going to transform our entire economy and world.

Come on, surely you can see thru your fog to at least ask some sensible questions.

Why are Democrats so afraid of drilling for "our" oil but have nothing bad to say about other countries drilling everywhere and anywhere, China is contracting to drill in the waters between Florida and Cuba. If Republicans are willing to throw some more money at "pie in the sky" solutions, just like we have for the past 30 years, why are you afraid of drilling? Because Democrats are in the tank for a few radical environmentists, that is why.
