Obama Responds to Edwards' Admission of Infidelity

August 09, 2008 8:49 AM

Upon landing in Honolulu Friday night, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said the following when asked whether there would be a speaking role for former Sen. John Edwards at the convention later this month, given Edwards' admission last night (read more HERE or watch HERE) of an affair with a former employee of his campaign.

“If I'm not mistaken, I think that they already indicated, the Edwards family indicated that they probably wouldn't be attending the convention," Obama said, per ABC News' Sunlen Miller. "I understand that. This is a difficult and painful time to them.  And I think they need to work through that process of healing. My sense is that that’s going to be their top priority.

"John Edwards was a great champion of working people during the course of his campaign," Obama continued. "Many of his themes are ones that Democrats as a whole share.  Those will be amplified in the convention, and I wish them all well. “

Would Edweirds really have anything he could add that would be relevant? In fact, do either of the clinton's have anything relevant? I didn't think so!!

For everyone who says that Obama doesn't want Edwards at the Democratic convention... no really? Given the circumstances I would think that it is implicit that he not attend the convention. As for Obama's statement, what would you have him say? Do you expect him to publicly bash Edwards? Before you start making statements about Obama not wanting him at the convention ask yourselves, if I were campaigning would I want him there?

Here's one more thing that upsets me about Edwards affair other than the hypocrisy of the mainstream media in not reporting it. Did anyone pick up on the fact that Mrs. Edwards had a recurrence of cancer after she supposedly was told of the affair by her husband?
The stress of what her husband put her through certainly could have led to the recurrence of her cancer.

so it's just a matter of a few weeks before the repubs use the Sinclair Story...Tabloid fodder to destroy Obama.
They won't care if it is true or not, but planting the seeds of doubt will be quite enough.

DL:

I KNOW nothing could peel your loyalty or narrow viewpoint away from Obama....

but do you really think it's necessary to dig back well over a quarter of a century to bring up Mccain's second marriage which has lasted that long and produced a fine family and embraced an adoptive Bangledesh daughter?

I'm sure that was a painful period for everyone concerned.... but it DIDN'T concern you... or me.

cast the first stone."!

Why has everyone taken to assume that Edwards family has not indicated they will not be attending the convention? Perhaps so many of you are such liars your selfs you have hard time believing anyone could possibly be telling the truth?
At any rate Edwards is now a private citizen and his affair or non affair is none of our business.
I believe Obama is showing class with the answer he game and I BELIEVE HIM!

This is a softball pitch to Obama. Abandoning others and/or throwing them under the bus is reflex for him. It's not clear that the media used Edwards name in the question, and Obama went right into character. This is one script he doesn't even need a teleprompter to deliver.

Empty platitudes from the one - wooed Edwards to get him to betray Hillary (who had the same Health Plan as his!). Coded language for: You ain't coming to the convention, take all the time you need to heal, and by the way, you will be remembered at the convention 'cause I am getting all your delegates! Hillary's response was sincere and her face and words showed real pain and sympathy.

I like Hillary's response, the edwards are in my prayers and thats all I have to say.... that's my girl.

Obama said:
"A light will shine down... from somewhere. It will light upon you. You will experience an epiphany... You will say to yourself, 'I have to vote for Barack' "

Obama missed his calling, he should be in the pulpit with Wright.

"The crowd in Berlin were given a free concert to get them there and MSWN failed to say that either."

Fairness is of no concern to them. Typical of Obama and his supporters.

This situation of infidelity in a president is much more serious than his cheating on his wife. They become a target of blackmail, which could put our country and its citizens at serious risk and harm. Another country, criminal, terrorist could blackmail a president in return for information, or turning a blind eye. If a president cannot be truthful and hold integrity in his private life, then he is in no position to represent his constituents.

While attempts by Jayhawk and West Coast Mess to turn the Edwards story into a negative for Obama are wierd, it would be helpful to note that McSame is the one going into the conventions with questions of recent extramarital playing around -- the lobbyist with whom he was cozy a few months back, until his staff staged an intervention. IF the Edwards story is a warning to either of the candidates, it is to John McSame!!!

Obama has been ignorant or lied so many times about so many things it is hard to keep track of all of them. What makes this so bad is that the media has not called Obama on any of his lies or ignorant statements or has gone so far as to agree with him. For example. Obama’s bizarre claims about saving the equivalent amount of oil you would get from off shore drilling by properly inflating your tires are simply not true. Is Obama who is so proud he will not admit he is being ignorant? Yes, Obama is ignorant yet has the audacity to smear the ones with the facts as “ignorant“. Obama lies then smears the truth-tellers as “liars”.
However, since estimates of significant tire underinflation affect only about a quarter of the cars on road – as we noted with the NHTSA statistics — and it’s highly unlikely that 100% of the cars are in need of tune- ups at any given time, the maximum savings amount is probably closer to 10%, Verrastro says.
“So the production offset is more likely to approach 800 thousand barrels per day – a tidy sum and a worthwhile target for savings, but not equal to Off Shore Drilling output,” he rules. “Finally, without knowing what production volumes could be expected from lifting the ban on OCS drilling moratoria, it’s impossible to assert that taking these fuel savings actions would exceed future offshore oil volumes, and in fact, one might argue that the combination of achieving these savings AND developing new supply would doubly enhance US energy security.”
Got that? Obama’s tire inflating proposal is just plain ignorant of the facts yet Obama smears or calls anyone who cites the above facts liars. Obama’s will not off-set off shore drilling yet Obama refuses to acknowledge these facts and smears people who point this out as “ignorant” or “racist” or “liars”.

Obama has done this before. Obama called Chris Dodd a liar when Dodd quoted Obama accurately regarding Pakistan. Obama called McCain's ad on Obama's record of calling for higher taxes on people earning $42,000 a year and would raise an average middle class family taxes as well. The ad is true despite some of the liberal blogs claiming other wise. Obama is against keeping in place President Bush's tax cuts which would increase the taxes of a family of four earning $50,000 by $2500 (which the liberal blogs fail to note. Not only that, Obama is calling for increases in dividend and capital gains taxes which would effect any family with a savings account or any money invested in the stock market which would include a lot of middle class people. So the McCain ad is true if you add up all of the taxes Obama is proposing plus Obama's plan to let President Bush's tax cuts expire. The problem is you cannot believe the media anymore when the media actually covers for Obama and does not call him on his lies.

--chucky--You saw exactly what the MSM wanted you to see when Obama was overseas. Yes, there were demos against him. The crowd in Berlin were given a free concert to get them there and MSWN failed to say that either.
The man is a socialist and unfit to be our president.

"we saw foreigners, cheering America and not buning the Flag or protesting against America backed abuses. It took a Black man to pull that off and you rear-appitures still can't see the forrest for the trees."

Heyyyyyyyy - 18 million of us have been trying to get Obama to take a hike all along. Why don't you get him a plane ticket and send him to where he is really loved?? Don't get him a ticket to Germany though - paper headlines there was "Change You Can't Believe In."

I still get the feeling that former Sen. Edwards isn't being fully truthful about this matter. As in the case of President Ahmadinejad (whom Obama wants to sit down with, unconditionally, despite the Iranian president's promise to use WMD on Israel), Sen. Obama appears to have problems evaluating the honesty and intentions of other people.

It is stii very obvious that some of you Obama-haters, are mental bricks. the above comments are real gems of ongoing stupidity. when Obama went overseas, for the first time in a long time, we saw foreigners, cheering America and not buning the Flag or protesting against America backed abuses. It took a Black man to pull that off and you rear-appitures still can't see the forrest for the trees.

The Obama said re Edwards:
""Many of his themes are ones that Democrats as a whole share."
