Obama's Attacks Keep Getting Sharper

August 18, 2008 7:13 PM

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., continued his sharper attacks on Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., today at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, NM.

"My opponent John McCain," he said as the crowd began to boo, "John McCain, you know, he has been talking about how he puts country first, but I have to say it is not an example of putting country first when you say that George Bush’s economic policies have shown great progress. He said that just a few months ago -- that, you know, we made great economic progress under George Bush. Then he started running ads saying 'oh, Obama just going to raise your taxes and he will lead to an economic disaster.'"

"Mr. McCain let me explain to you, the economic disaster is happening right now," Obama continued, "maybe you haven't noticed!

"He has got his major economic advisor calling you whiners," Obama said, referring to former Sen. Phil Gramm.  "He said, 'oh, the American people are whining' one of McCain's top advisors said, 'a nation of whiners.' 'They have a mental depression. They are just imagining things are bad."

"This guy obviously does not pump his own gas. He obviously doesn't do his own shopping. He (is) obviously not paying his own bills," Obama said.

Just for reference to the person who was talking about this- Obama's household income jumped from $991,296 in 2006 to $4.2 million in 2007, tax records show. Yet he is still not rich according to John McCain!

Arthur et al. -- I am a diehard Obama supporter, but there is nothing to be gained by attacking McCain's integrity, military record, or patriotism. That would be the surest way for Obama to lose badly. That's why Obama has take the high road.

Posted by: Mike in Philly | Aug 19, 2008 1:54:19 PM

This election is a complete no-brainer. Obama recognizes the disaster we have on our hands and wants a clean break from Bush's failed policies, "accomplished" at our expense by perverting government, trashing the constitution and everything it stands for, and antagonizing other countries, all because of his greed for power. McCain has said he agrees with most of Bush's policies. If Obama wins, we could end up with the drastic reversal of course that we need. If McCain wins, things will improve slightly (since no one could be as bad as idiot George), but otherwise things will remain as they are. If that's okay with you, vote for McCain. If you want significant change, you'll be foolish not to vote for Obama. No-brainer.

Posted by: Mike in Philly | Aug 19, 2008 1:42:16 PM

Obama needs a voice coach.

He was trying to make a joke about McCain's cutoff for being rich is $5 million dollars.

Obama actually said "uh uh, ee ee, but but...then he finally started talking.

I don't know if he stutters because he is nervous or because he is being deceptive--but it is happening all the time when he is without a prompter.

I can see why Obama does not want to debate his opponents.

Posted by: riley | Aug 19, 2008 1:07:13 PM

Vote for Obama. I'm for the new guy. John McBush is senile and will get us killed. Other presidents listen, he knows it all already. He's dangerous.
Barack is smart and will do just fine protecting his country. Let McBush go back to the senate and take a nap.

dl, you wrote: "...along with the guy whose plan actually brings relief now with focusing on alternatives." NOW? And that guy is still on the fence regarding nuclear power!

Even Sen. Obama acknowledges that it will take 20 years for alternative fuels to become just 50% of our energy source. And at the end of that twenty years 50% of our energy will still come from fossil fuel; and over 70% of that will still be foreign oil. So in twenty years we will still have the same national security issues regarding the threats of being cut off oil by rogue nations.

I repeat: Sen. McCain is calling for 45 new nuclear plants to be up and running by 2030. He is calling for increased efforts towards wind, hydro and solar energy in addition to drilling here and now.

We need to throw everything we have into this solution. It's simple Economics 101 folks!! Lowering demand lowers prices. Increasing supply lowers prices. Lowering demand AND increasing supply lowers prices faster!

A change in flow of Obama vs McCain Bout?

Obama came out with 2 billion dollars for Nasa. McCain Fires Back At Obama To Win Over NASA Supporters.

Does this mean Obama is setting the pace this round before the convention?

If Obama defends himself against McCain's punch on Nasa will this be seen as a attack or blocking a McCain left jab?

I don't think defending yourself is a attack. Think of Rove and Scmidt as Taunting bullies with attack ads. Obama blocked their attack ad and then Obama told them he had better things to do with his and the voters time by doing a positive ad.

Posted by: Charlie | Aug 19, 2008 7:12:58 AM

Easy to see Obama's paid bloggers on here tonight. I'm betting Obama's convention bounce won't be any better than his Berlin bounce was. The Dems sure threw this one away.

Posted by: marylou | Aug 19, 2008 5:44:12 AM

GOPers want to blame the democrats for higher gas prises? The energy crisis is the result of Bush's war, economic policies, and a long history of refusing to convert to renewables (a history J. McCain is very much part of). It is not their fault that the trend continued when anything they try to do is filibustered or vetoes. Republicans are admittedly good at politics, but they have no clue when it comes to policy. Look how they have ruined this country starting with taking us off the gold standard, deregulating the economy, creating speculator loopholes, lying to start a war, and borrowing billions from the Chinese to fund their failures. Clearly not this congresses fault, or certainly not wholly, for this happened on Republican watch.

Posted by: mummblemouth | Aug 19, 2008 4:10:39 AM

you gotta love the ignorance of people making fun of the energy actions that actually save money...

along with the guy whose plan actually brings relief now with focusing on alternatives...not continuing a dependence on fossil fuels that will (no matter what continue our high dependence on other countries)

Energy independence means getting as far away from OIL as we can ... you don't do that by having your first tactic toward breaking the addiction as opening new pharmacies that will open in 7 years and bring prices down then...and say it will effect the market...all the while no regulation of speculators of the market.(Partly because the people who deregulated that market are your lead economy advisors)

this is stupid people should read and common sense should tell you the guy with the lobbyist team...is the guy who probably isn't the guy who should be leading.

LOL, Right wing wing-nuts. They want to have their cake and eat it too. How typical! 'What happened to Obama taking the high road?' LOL...where have you been, that is precisely what has and is happening for an attack is warranted as long as it is not a blatant lie, a la McCain. 'He has no ideas so he attacks.' What?! Obama has a plan and it is clearly laid out on his website among other places. Rather, it is McCain without any ideas - at least not any that differ from the failed policies of the last four years. That McCain and company misrepresented is only further proof of their tentative relationship to the truth. 'Obama can't comment on J. McCain's military service.' Why not? I respect him for not doing so, but the wing nuts have clearly forgotten Bush's swiftboating of Kerry. Republican has become synonymous with hypocrite, and hypocrisy is the problem in this country. Vote Obama, Barr, or Nader...for McCain equals failure.

Certainly, Obama is going to attack. His policies are too incomplete for voters to believe and he has no other rational political rhetric. He is losing his grip. His new Chicago gangland policies don't sell to the rest of the country.

Posted by: Martin | Aug 19, 2008 1:58:58 AM

Obama has to be on the defensive as he feels it slipping away. Watched all the cable news shows tonight and 80% of the comments were favoring McCain, and what a strong presense he was Sat. night at the faith forum. He knows who he is and what he stands for and gets his message out clearly. Mr. Nuance (as they all love to refer to Obama's confusing way of speaking) is just going to have to play defense by attacking McCain more and more now.....but he's the agent of Change and new politics...NOT.
And the scuttlebutt with cone of silence was an insult to Rick Warren and his church staff and the Secret Service that were with McCain the whole time. Obama camp = crybabies.

Posted by: Debra | Aug 19, 2008 1:39:44 AM

The Democrats, after "selecting" not "electing" their candidate, Obama, were in hopes of setting up McCain to look like a referendum. It turns out, however, that Obama is the referendum. Obama is falling behind quickly and can't get his campaign together to fight back. I knew it was only a matter of time before Obama began to implode and that time is now!

Inevitably, John McCain, the next POTUS!

Chris,
First, I don't make neg. comments.

My point is that regardless of what McCain does with his POW experience, it is not for us to use it against him. He alone went through what he did, others went through their own. IMO, such an exp. as that best not be second guessed for pol. leverage by opponents. To me, it would be like using a domestic violence exp., a child abuse exp. against someone. Just some things that are ethically off limits, IMO

Posted by: hype bites | Aug 18, 2008 11:08:08 PM

So, apparently, chris, you being a war veteran makes you immune to criticism, but McCain being a war veteran and POW is fair game? Gotcha..

You Obama supporters are really sounding desperate! I can only imagine how bad things will be should the mainstream media ever cover the story behind Sen. Obama's five-year relationship with the man he called an "influential person," a friend and an adviser during his youth (1975-1979) in Hawaii--Frank Marshall Davis.

Google it folks!

Dear Obama,

Whatever happened to not being responsible for what OTHERS say (regarding the whiners comment)?

Guess you have a double standard.

By your logic, you are culpable for what Rev Wright says.

Posted by: JA | Aug 18, 2008 10:47:59 PM

KJ, I am thinking about it with an open mind. I agree that drilling only will do very little. BUT had the Democrats and environmentalists not blocked the building of new nuclear plants, new refineries and not blocked offshore drilling for the past 20-30 years, we could probably be relying on nuclear power for 50% of our electricity today. And instead of relying on 70% foreign oil for our energy today, we probably would be down to 45% or 50%.

Sen. McCain has called for 45 new nuclear plants to be up and running by 2030.

Sen. McCain has proposed a $5,000 tax credit for each and every person who purchases a zero carbon emission car.

His opponents have scoffed at it, but Sen. McCain has also proposed that a $300 million prize be awarded "for the development of a battery package that has the size, capacity, cost and power to leapfrog the commercially available plug-in hybrids or electric cars. That battery should deliver a power source at 30 percent of the current costs."

Sen. McCain also supports encouraging wind, hydro and solar power.

We need to do it all. We can keep prices down by increasing our supply of domestic oil AND decreasing our demand for oil.

Nearly 75% of the country cannot wait for the Bush administration to leave office.
Since McCain supports Bush's policies anyone who supports McCain is voting for 4 more years of hard times for the U.S. taxpayers. This is reality.
Is that what most Americans want? No! That is why Obama has been receiving more contributions than McCain, every month, and that is why more Republicans than ever before in history are supporting the Democratic candidate.

It's very simple: If you are happy with the present state of the economy, the war in Iraq, the present health care system and the way big-business runs Washington - vote for McCain.
If you are fed up with the way all of the above has been handled in the last 8 years - vote for Obama.
Think clearly: Whatever your party affiliation, our country is in very bad shape and your vote is more important than ever.

Bruce Becker, first of all it is 68 million acres of land, most of which is on national parks and national monument lands. The main reason that there is no drilling on many of these leases right now is because of lawsuits, red tape and either there is very little oil or the oil that is there is too costly to drill. A federal judge blocked an attempt to drill on one lease just a couple of weeks ago.

Now then you wrote: "...drilling off the Jersey shore 5 years from now will not change the price of oil today."

Look at what has happened to the cost of oil just since President Bush signed the executive order to rescind the previous executive order banning offshore drilling. And that signing is actually meaningless without Congress actually rescinding their ban. BUT the speculators are beginning to realize that the ban on offshore drilling may actually occur since over 70% of the American people want more drilling. It was speculation that drove the prices up and it is a change in speculation that is driving the price down. Just imagine how much it will drop should Congress actually rescind the ban.

Finally, just waiting twenty years for renewable fuels to become an equal source of energy with oil, won't do anything to help us lower our dependency on foreign oil! That is unless we ALSO drill here and drill now. By flooding the world market with American oil will drive the price of oil down. It will bring more money into our economy by creating tens of thousands of new jobs.

Posted by: James Danley | Aug 18, 2008 10:25:03 PM

Roxanne if thats true then why are so many obama supporters outraged that there will be a roll call a perfectly normal process in the democratic national convention? She will release her delegates I know she will, Obama will win, but the Obama supporters are so arrogant so pumas raised 50,000 thats about as much as Obama supporters came up with for her while Hillary and her supporters came up with about 500,000 for him. Now who really wants unity?

You've phrased this incorrectly but I know what you want to say. You wanted to point out that 70% of government revenues is coming from top income earners. And that is exactly what is wrong with our income policies. To reverse this ‘problem’, lower income would have to go up, higher income would have to come down. The income gap has to be come down dramatically.

Where do you think that high income from top earners is coming?

James Danley, drilling off the Jersey shore 5 years from now will not change the price of oil today.
75 million acres of leases are already not being used to drill from. Why? All oil that is derived from US leases is sold to the highest bidder. Accountants run the WTO, not Mother Teresa. When it is profitable, the WTO companies will get around to drilling on the leases we already sold to them.
Selling more leases is not going to change anything.
We do not have the means to process any more oil, anyway. Someone, WTO or socialism, would have to build a new refinery plant. Someone, WTO or socialism, would have to build a new oil rig platform. All the platforms are busy and all the companies that make them are booked up completely, so this drilling talk is HOKUM by McCain. Total, absolute HOKUM.
More to the point:
What little oil we have left must be reserved for our military. It is time to stop selling any leases to WTO companies and reserve it all for America.

James Delaney-Drill, Drill, Drill...is that really the answer? If we had started drilling 7.5 years ago, would there be ANY invention of the (while still imperfect) hybrid cars, electric cars, etc.? No, there would be no motivation to develop alternate fuel sources. There is a reason besides the environment that things need to be done the way they are. If we just keep on drilling, SUV's would keep getting bigger and the oil man will jkeep getting richer and we will suck those resources away too...we are an America of spoiled people living in excess...sometimes, you need to hit rock bottom before peple decide to put on their thinking caps and start making some changes!

'song bird' mccain...

honor, duty, country

John McCain seriously violated the Military Code of Conduct by trading "military information" and making numerous public statements that appeared favorable to the communist war effort in exchange for "special treatment."

The Code: Consisting of six articles in simple language, the United States Military Code of Conduct orders American military personnel to resist capture at all cost and if captured; to attempt to escape, to give the enemy no information other than name, rank, serial number and date of birth, to take charge if senior, to obey orders of the seniors, to accept no favors from the enemy and to make no written or oral statements disloyal to the United States.

Reds Say PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral. . . Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of United States Commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner." New York Daily News, June 5, 1969

March 25, 1999, The Phoenix New Times: Ted Guy and Gordon "Swede" Larson, two former POWs, who were McCain's senior ranking officers (SRO's), at the time McCain says he was tortured in solitary confinement, told the New Times that while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.

"Between the two of us, it's our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as "The Plantation"]," Larson says. ". . . My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted's knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from."

In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to make public the records they hold pertaining to returned U.S. POWs.

McCain's crime revealed: When the FBI pointed out that the source of the Anthrax used in the attack on NBC and Congress was made at a military installation in Maryland, and delivered by Americans, they made a liar out of McCain. It is a crime to perpetrate false propaganda which leads the US to war. McCain said on Letterman OCT 2001, I HAVE A SOURCE THAT SAYS IRAQ is the cause of the Anthrax WMD. Iraq may be the cause of the Anthrax WMD. Then we went to war against Iraq, based on such false impressions that Iraq even had WMDs like the ANTHRAX. It is time for you to call upon McCain to tell us his SOURCE that fabricated that tall tale.

I'm not sure I would call a kid who was coddled in private schools through his youth then rode the affirmative action ticket to success "rising from the dust"

lowinfo to go, the only thing I agree with you is your statement that "the reason gas prices have spiked has ZERO to do with more drilling."

That's because had we had MORE drilling the past 7 1/2 years prices would be LOWER today!

It is abundantly clear that as good a person as John McCain is, he has lost perspective on what America really is all about when it comes to daily living.

Obama is a man who knows what it is to rise from the dust. He is the leader this country needs to break the shackles and bonds of the economic industrial elite and restore America's spirit, and its constitutional rights.

McCain threw the first punch at Obama with his Attack ad. Obama just threw a counter punch. Problem for McCain he just went after the NBC coverage of Obama. Was McCain's left jab to NBC wise? Does Obama avoid Fox News McCains biggest cheerleader? Obama appears more focused in defending himself as well as presenting a postive case for his campaign. McCain is still in attack mode trying to hit Obama and the media.

The facts stated by one poster which I include for your reference, omit the key point. For a while, McCain prevented federal investigators from stopping the fraud, and while he held up the investigation, the fraud grew to greater proportions, costing US taxpayers a few millions. The whole thing costed US taxpayers $500 million.
I quote: "The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB).

USS forrestal

Did He Start The USS Forrestal Fire?

Surviving crewmen and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his plane.

McCain Aviation Career

McCain crashed 5 jets, plus was responsible for the Forrestal fire. Something made the plane behind McCain fired a rocket, which hit McCain's external center fuel tank, and caused a fire. McCain panicked, and dropped two bombs into the fire.

Arthur, you could have copied the rest of the piece on the Keating Five from Wikipedia:

"After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings. Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly.

"All five of the senators involved served out their terms. Only Glenn and McCain ran for re-election, and they were both re-elected."

Sen. McCain WAS CLEARED!

The best part of all of reading this is to watch all the "Canies" freaking out! Face it folks...if he wasn't a threat to take the Republicans out of office you would be cool, calm and collected. Obama will do it and you will all see that!

As I said, you are all just showing how scared you are by posting things here. I find it comical!

- Obama's got more academic credentials and a more impressive resume than you will ever have.-

I've read Obama got the Harvard Review out of PC, that he never published a thing, zero, nada, zilch...until the two books and a need to reinvent himself (which have read not written by him entirely). And what about his school thesis, his grades? Why are they AWOL? Hmmm, sounds like C grade Kerry in 2004.
