Oh, That Joe! (Number 3 in a Series)
August 31, 2008 9:53 AM
Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., stopped by a Marengo, Ohio, fruit and produce stand next to an expansive soy bean field to get some corn on Saturday.
Joined by former Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Gov. Ted Strickland, Biden talked to locals at the stand, really just a small truck, run by Sharon Hildebrand, where corn sells for four bucks for a dozen ears.
"What color M&M's you like?" Biden asked Luke, a local wearing an M&M NASCAR hat.
The boy said he liked red the best.
"I like the red ones best, too," Biden said. "I like the orange ones, too."
Biden then spotted three young girls.
"You have gorgeous eyes," Biden said. "All of you do. Holy mackerel! Look at those eyes, they're like beacons!"
"This is the number one thing," Biden said, "how old are you?"
The responses: 10, 11, 13.
"No boys 'til you're thirty," Biden said, "no boys till you're 30 years old."
He used the "no boys till you're 30" line again on the father of a 15-year old girl.
"That's what I keep trying but it's a losing battle," said the father.
"It's a losing battle with my daughter, too," Biden responded, referring to his 27-year-old daughter Ashley.
"I keep telling her they're highly over-rated," said the dad.
Biden also chatted up a local man who shares Obama's August 4 birthday.
"By the way, you know what I found out today?" Biden told him. "You're not gonna believe this. They went back and showed me my Irish lineage and his and they said we're related," referencing Sen. Barack 0bama, D-Illinois.
"Oh, you're kidding," said the older man.
"The bad news is that means I'm related to Cheney," Biden joked, alluding to the fact that Obama and Vice President Cheney are distantly related.
Before he left, Biden -- brandishing his plastic bag of corn -- told the crowd that, "I'm taking the corn and getting the hell out of here. I'm not giving anybody this corn!"

Why did the author of this post write "Obama" with the number zero instead of the letter O?
He does it in the following passage:
"By the way, you know what I found out today?" Biden told him. "You're not gonna believe this. They went back and showed me my Irish lineage and his and they said we're related," referencing Sen. Barack 0bama, D-Illinois.

John T - He sounds very relational in his campaigning, not scary. It really is okay for him to compliment young girls. Having come from a potential vice president, it's something they'll remember for life in certainly a positive way. Hopefully, the eyes of many young people will serve as beacons.

Come on Jake, this article is a waste of space. Biden joking with "children," flattering children, what is the deal? Joe was just making conversation.
Early last week Obama made a funny statement about his daughters. He said the reason for becoming President was to get Secret Service protection for his daughters to keep the boys in line.

He sounds a bit "scary".

I've seen a lot of history and I've studied a lot of politics. Unlike some of you, I know how to research and where to go to check fact from fable. It used to amaze me to hear people repeat bold faced lies, but no longer. Am becoming more misanthropic in my old age. I voted Republican all of my life, right up until 2000, when I decided that anybody would be better than Bush. Everything I feared came to pass.
Do your research, people. Read everything, pro and con about your preferred candidates. Open your minds and make your own decisions instead of parroting talking heads who get paid a lot of money to stir the pot. If you can not separate truth from fact, then you have not earned the privilege to vote.

Joe Biden is one creepy guy. Obama/Biden misogyny we can believe in!

Jake - Isn't this fairly standard small talk among fathers? I don;t undertand why you are even mentioning it. If you think it is bad, can you please explain to us why, so we know what the heck you are talking about?

If Obama loses this election, it won't be because of Joe Biden, it will be because Obama is simply too aloof and exotic for regular people to connect with him. People connect with Joe Biden, when they actually see him and hear him, instead of the endless stereotypical spin of the media. Media spin is sort of like watching the toilet flush. Most just repeat what they have heard the last guy say instead of doing their own original research. Unfortunately most people don't get the opportunity to meet Joe and hear him in person so they can see that in reality he is not what the media make him out to be.
When Joe gave his acceptance speech the other night, he mis-spoke, and said Bush instead of McCain, which is hardly a mistake anyway. It was John Kerry, I think, who did the same thing. Did anyone mention afterward that it happened twice? No. All of the media people who mentioned it only said that Joe Biden made this "gaffe".
It should be the media who are under scrutiny. They lie and spin and try to fashion reality to suit their corporate ownership, which usually means that they are NOT liberal media (another spin) but conservative media, because it is the conservatives who give corporations and fat cats all of the tax breaks. If you think the mainstream media are liberal then you've all been hoodwinked!

Democrats need to say thanks to McCain.
Leave McCain be Dems
He just sealed the deal for us with this lame pick for vp.
John McCain
On behalf of all Democrats Independents and enlightened Republicans, I say thanks for making this presidential election a cake-walk for us.

Biden is a creep. I wouldn't want some strange old man telling my daughters they have beautiful eyes and talking about dating. Ages 10,11 and 13? I wouldn't want some strange old man to say anything, really, to my daughters.

My question is how does Palin flipflop. She has got to be a skilled flipflopper to be on the same ticket with "THE MASTER"
Can't be a grasshopper flipflopper"

What a dufas. Biden is embarrassing.

Palin has a voice that would rival that of a yowling cat and an annoying "perkiness" that make just watching and hearing her abrasive as far as we are concerned. Add that she is a right-to-lifer and believes that Chrisitan mythology should be taught in school and you've got a real "winner". We laughed ourselves silly when McCain introduced her, and thought he must finally be showing signs of dementia to choose someone like her for a VP!

What is at all incendiary about Biden's comment?
Posted by: Go Joe | Aug 31, 2008 2:27:02 PM
An Alaskan,
There is something ulterior in that story.
"exciting opportunity to run off an play"
Is that what you consider the executive branch of our government does?
You stopped in a local Obama office, in a state where the governor, Palin, has 80% approval rating and Obama signs flew off the table? Really?
By logic one would think that just like Illinois, Obama's state, yet a state where Hillary was born, went totally for Obama. And New York, Hillary state, went totally for Hillary. But the Alaskans are different you are saying? how odd.

I have watched Sarah Palin move up in our state with some degree of respect - However, she has left many projects partially finished to take on a major challenge elsewhere. She really is still unproven here. Alaskans took a gamble on her for governor and we have not yet had the chance to find out if it was really a good choice. Yes, she has been part of a shake up in the state's politics but a lot of that was coming with or without her. She is just leaving the job partially finished - and her second-in-command has also been competing for the US House seat - at her suggestion and encouragement - against Don Young. It is possible that all these exciting opportunities to run off and play elsewhere will cause Alaskans to surprise everyone and start voting in Democrats. Just out of curiosity I stopped in at the local Obama office the day McCain made the announcment - so many people had stopped in to get information, sign up to volunteer and get involved that they had run out of yard signs
