People Who Live in Seven Glass Houses….

August 21, 2008 11:37 AM

CHESTER, VIRGINIA --  Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, just hit Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for a Politico interview in which he said he wasn't sure how many houses he has.

Asked how many houses he and his wife Cindy own, McCain told Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen  "I think - I'll have my staff get to you. It's condominiums where - I'll have them get to you."

It seemed a real gaffe for a politician who is trying to paint Obama as an elitist.

So this morning, after acknowledging that McCain "has a compelling personal story" as a Vietnam P.O.W. who "went through some things that none of us could imagine," Obama pivoted to his new attack that McCain is out of touch.

First he noted that McCain said that the U.S. is making "great progress economically."

"Who's he talking to?" Obama asked.

Then he cited McCain's "joke" from the forum at Saddleback Church when he offered to Pastor Rick Warren the definition that someone who's rich is someone who makes $5 million a year.

"I guess if you're only making $3 million a year then you're middle class," Obama said. "I guess that's what he meant."

Obama then cited the controversial comments by McCain economic adviser and former Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, that the U.S. had "become a nation of whiners," and that the country was in a "mental recession."

Obama said that McCain said recently, "I think the economy is fundamentally strong."

"This puzzled me," Obama said. "Then there was another interview the same day…Somebody asked John McCain, 'How many houses do you have?' and he said, 'I'm not sure, I'll have to check with my staff.'"

The crowd laughed.

"True quote!" Obama said. "'I’m not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff.’ So they asked his staff and he said, ‘at least four.’ ‘at least four.’

"Now think about that," Obama told the crowd, "I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong.

"But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house," he continued, "or you're like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.

"By the way, the answer is John McCain has seven homes," Obama said. "So there’s just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain’s world and what people are going through every single day here in America. And you don’t’ have to be…a Nobel Prize laureate economist. You just have to have a little bit of a sense of what ordinary people are going through to understand that we cant afford eight more years or four more years or one more year of the same failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."

McCain spox Brian Rogers issued a response statement saying, “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans? The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”

-- Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller

UPDATE: Obama campaign's new TV ad attacking McCain on the subject.

The script says: "when asked how many houses he owns, he lost track, he couldn't remember. Well, it's seven.  Seven houses. And here's one house that America cannot afford to let John McCain move into," the ad concludes, showing an image of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Love the Obama ad!

I think Brian Rogers is "out of touch wwith the concerns of average Americans.” Is he aware, for instance, that when Barack Obama was on vacation, he was visiting his grandparents who have property in Hawaii?

Or that Barack is probably still paying his mortgage on that million-dollar property he owns?

Does Rogers know that many farmers and ranchers in states like Montana (where I've lived before) do "cling" to guns and religion? (Granted, "cling" is not the correct word to use.)

And does he know that since it takes thousands of years for earth layers to compress against one another to create oil underground, once it's gone (and we will use it up eventually) that's it. Plus, there are no guarantees against oil spills. Alternative energy sources are our best bet.

Finally, if Obama needs to raise taxes to pay for programs and other things like improving our roads and bridges, how else does Rogers think we'll be able to afford these things?

Barack Obama's parents were not wealthy. He made something of himself and some people want to tear him apart for it. Meanwhile, he wants to help those of us without a lot of money by creating affordable health care programs, investing in renewable energy projects to lower energy costs (which will undoubtably create new jobs), and lower taxes for the low- and middle-class.

McCain's lamest comeback

a noun, a verb, Hanoi Hilton

I could kiss Grampy right on his crepey old face, by trying to excuse his Embarrassment of Riches with his POW history. McCain is diminishing his own achievement as a FREE PASS CARD, which no Democrat would have dared touch.

I hope Mittler Romney has his counted his many houses accurately, since TIME magazine say he's Grampy's VP.
Doubling down with Cindy McBigBuck's money and Mittler's money...will really make this team look like the Lifestyles of the RICH and ARROGANT.

McCain house JOKES at HuffPo

my favorite

McCain had the number of his houses written down, but he left it in his other plane.

___________
On what basis.... what background.... what achievements... would you elevate Obama to the presidency?

On the basis of a campaign well run?
Then elect Axelrod.

On the basis of empty promises of chancey change?
Then elect Hans Christian Andersen.

On the basis of leading a senatorial sub-committee on Afghanistan for which he called nary a single meeting.....?

On the basis of snubbing our wounded in both Iraq and Germany?

Consider the lack of possibilities!

Actually, I don't believe McCain owns any homes.

I find it fascinating democrats comparing McCain to Bush especially the TV ADS run by Obama. Obama must think the entire population in America is as stupid as democrats with this lame attempt at comparing McCain to Bush. My nine yr old daughter knows the difference. After one such commercial she stated “Dad, I thought Bush could only be President for 8 yrs.. (Yes you are correct)… Then why are they saying George Bush will President again for another 4 years? I tried to explain the lame satire attempt by Obama and the DNC but I explained how Obama and the DNC believes Americans are to stupid to know this.. Her response "Dad maybe they should go back to school."

I’m always amazed at how democrats trivialize McCain’s Vietnam experience while for 8 years they’ve blasted Bush for dodging the War. Four years ago that’s all Kerry ran on and was a War Hero to the democrats. Now the democrats want to minimize McCain’s decades of experience and experience in Vietnam for someone that was a community activist a few years ago. The double standard is quite mind - boggling.

Obama really cares about the people? What a dillusional crowd.

According to the 07 income tax statements Obama made over 4.2 million dollars last year, he dodnated $ 240,370.00 to charity that comes to about 6%. Of the total donations 50 thousand went to the United ***** College fund and $26,270 went to Trinity United Church.

By comparison McCain had an income of $405,409.00 he donated $105,469 of that to charity or roughly 26%.

Is this what you mean about qualified to lead?

Posted by: McCainWho | Aug 22, 2008 6:34:56 AM

Hear the guy in his own words celebrate low achievement. Is this the type of President that will inspire a nation to achieve the impossible?

Posted by: McCainWho | Aug 22, 2008 6:31:04 AM

The fact that he has 7 houses is irrelevant. What is relevant is that someone in his economic strata, supported by a spouse worth $100 million, has a limited ability to either identify with or understand the economic plight of the common man. Also, with respect to the POW status and the 5 years in captivity, McCain should forever be honored and respected for his patriotic experience. However, there are also thousands of vietnam Vets and victims of roadside bombings in Iraq who experienced tortuous circumstances yet those examples of national and patriotic seervice above self, as McCain says, do not make them fit to be President of the United States. The electorate is gullible and guilt ridden when they feel compelled to support McCain because of his service and his POW experience. He deserves praise and honor - not elevation to the Presidency because of it.

So Obama is saying because Franklin Roosevelt had numerous homes, he was unqualified to put together programs for those less fortunate?

Or that all those Kennedy homes mean Ted has no understanding for the Americans with one address?

I suppose if Cindy McCain attended one of Obama's $7.8M fundraising parties, her four homes wouldn't be a problem. Who is Barack Obama talking to??

Michelle told Barack he should run for President this year while they're still "normal"! Tell us again how many bottles the wine cellar in the Obama mansion holds...

No the vast majority want handouts and the government to do everything for them.. that is why Obama will win – bringing back the roaring 70’s.

"But the other %90 just can't find a job. Ford and general motors cut 30,000 jobs each, and you're saying the economy is great... Wow, 60,000 jobs, i'd say that is significant."

60,000 people seems like a lot but in reality it's .02% of the population.

The problem I have with this the issues in the auto industry didn't happen over night. The auto industry has been losing jobs for 25-30 yrs. The unions are killing them, their pension requirements are killing them, the poor quality for their products is killing them, the writing was on the wall for many years.

I was in the automotive industry.. I realized 15-18 or so years ago my job would not be around another 30-40 years or so. I went to school at night and on the weekends took 9 years and moved on. To many people in the country react instead of being proactive. If I had sat on my ass for 10 years waiting to get laid off I would have hand out to Uncle Sam as well.

Not sure how Obama is going to get people off their asses to go to school or how he's going to pay for it. I haven't figured out what's wrong with student loans. I had them - took 10 yrs to pay them off.

I think your under estimating the number of unemployed people who really want to work, Your 10% number should be more like 50%.

Posted by: tm | Aug 22, 2008 2:51:02 AM

"If you want a number MUCH bigger than this ELECT MCCAIN."

Now that's funny.. You really think Obama is going to shrink the size of the government? Do you really think increasing tax's rates will increase revenues under OBAMA. Tax increases will not raise revenues. The fact is the governemnt has record tax revenues now - they problem is spending. I mentioned before we have two party's Blue Dog Democrats and Far Left Wing Socialists. How in the world will OBAMA shrink the size of the debt with his socialistic programs. Obama is already on record as saying the size of deficit is not a major concern to him.

The war is peanuts compared to number the government spends every year. It's 3 dam trillion a year.

Clothing styles have resembled the 70's recently .. our economy will mirror it if Obama is elected.

For those who believe the unempolyment rate is sooo sooo high maybe you should look at the data and figure out why and who is unempoyed.

unempolyment rate for people with less than a HS Diploma has increased from 6.9% to 8.5%

HS Diploma 4.5% to 5.2%

Some College or Associates 3.7% to 4.5%

College Degree 2.4% to 2.4%

Even clueless socialist, I mean democrats should be able to figure this out.

I know, I know what the socialist will say has Bush isn't spending enough on education. BS he's increased education spending like you would expect a democrat to do.

Let's keep plowing money into our low performing public school education system instead of giving people school choice.

next question...

how much energy do they consume, even unoccupied?

NYT did a recent piece on how much water Lance Armstrong's house uses. Tops the list in Houston.

Well, with a house having an indoor and outdoor pool, and what may be...per Politico, eight...or Time, ten houses, they have a footprint.

how green in johnny's $14 million?
