People Who Live in Seven Glass Houses….
August 21, 2008 11:37 AM
CHESTER, VIRGINIA -- Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, just hit Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for a Politico interview in which he said he wasn't sure how many houses he has.
Asked how many houses he and his wife Cindy own, McCain told Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen "I think - I'll have my staff get to you. It's condominiums where - I'll have them get to you."
It seemed a real gaffe for a politician who is trying to paint Obama as an elitist.
So this morning, after acknowledging that McCain "has a compelling personal story" as a Vietnam P.O.W. who "went through some things that none of us could imagine," Obama pivoted to his new attack that McCain is out of touch.
First he noted that McCain said that the U.S. is making "great progress economically."
"Who's he talking to?" Obama asked.
Then he cited McCain's "joke" from the forum at Saddleback Church when he offered to Pastor Rick Warren the definition that someone who's rich is someone who makes $5 million a year.
"I guess if you're only making $3 million a year then you're middle class," Obama said. "I guess that's what he meant."
Obama then cited the controversial comments by McCain economic adviser and former Sen. Phil Gramm, R-Texas, that the U.S. had "become a nation of whiners," and that the country was in a "mental recession."
Obama said that McCain said recently, "I think the economy is fundamentally strong."
"This puzzled me," Obama said. "Then there was another interview the same day…Somebody asked John McCain, 'How many houses do you have?' and he said, 'I'm not sure, I'll have to check with my staff.'"
The crowd laughed.
"True quote!" Obama said. "'I’m not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff.’ So they asked his staff and he said, ‘at least four.’ ‘at least four.’
"Now think about that," Obama told the crowd, "I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don’t know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong.
"But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house," he continued, "or you're like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.
"By the way, the answer is John McCain has seven homes," Obama said. "So there’s just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain’s world and what people are going through every single day here in America. And you don’t’ have to be…a Nobel Prize laureate economist. You just have to have a little bit of a sense of what ordinary people are going through to understand that we cant afford eight more years or four more years or one more year of the same failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place."
McCain spox Brian Rogers issued a response statement saying, “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans? The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”
-- Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller
UPDATE: Obama campaign's new TV ad attacking McCain on the subject.
The script says: "when asked how many houses he owns, he lost track, he couldn't remember. Well, it's seven. Seven houses. And here's one house that America cannot afford to let John McCain move into," the ad concludes, showing an image of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

"There's a shortage of auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, good contractors, roofers, sales positions, etc. etc. etc. If people want work there are plenty of jobs available. If they want to show up on time, work hard, stay off booze and drugs, there's plenty of opportunities in this country."
That is a stereotype of the few people who cannot get there lives together. I agree these people should stop asking the government for money. But the other %90 just can't find a job. Ford and general motors cut 30,000 jobs each, and you're saying the economy is great... Wow, 60,000 jobs, i'd say that is significant. First of all what is you're business? You should be more open minded to the fact that these 60,000 men have families to feed and college is extremely expensive(another problem obama will help) So 2 years of college to learn how to become another trade would literally put the family on the streets. OBAMA!

The O-man's tactic is way off on this one. I WANT to own 7 houses. Every American wants to be able to own 7 houses, if not more. It's the American dream. Going after McCain on this shows O's instinctive, reflexive bent toward redistribution of wealth. It is a small section of the American population, mainly hard-core leftists/socialists/marxists who revel in "soak the rich and give it to the poor" rhetoric. This ad will backfire in the US, but would likely be a hit in places like Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.
Now the response will come from the McCain camp and it will be devastating. How many Dem leaders live in squalor? Feinstein? Pelosi? Hillary and Bill? Gore? The O campaign made a BIG mistake with this ad, which works only if Dems from top to bottom are the party of financial modesty, if not poverty.
Big mistake!

"The O Man -
Apparently you are a little behind on this story. Rick Warren said he gave each candidate a general list of questions and specifically told Obama three questions he would ask. He specifically told McCain 2 questions he would ask and never did get around to telling him the third which was about the president and church's adoption program.
And yes, continue down the path that a man who was tortured every day for 5 years rather than leave his men behind even when given a chance to leave has so little honor that he cheated by listening in on the questions that would be asked at a religious forum. Like anyone with a brain couldn't figure out the questions would be about abortion, gay marriage, taxes, evil, the war, etc. There were absolutely no surprises in those questions.
And Obama has campaigned for 1.5 years and couldn't do better. And tell us -- even if McCain did have the questions -- let's pretend, how does that excuse the fact that Obama stunk that night?"
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Peachy. I happen to think Obama did very well, considering he was in a pro McCain crowd, and he was having an actual conversation with the pastor, not stumping a speech to every question to the audience.
And let's not pretend McShame didn't have the questions. He blurted out one time, asking the pastor, "Is this the question about the Supreme Court Justices?" The pastor told him he was getting ahead...hmmm, I wonder how he knew?
And can McLame answer one question without him throwing his war-at-all-cost answers? Jesus, this guy looks like a War-Monger who will have us fighting to the end of time. Does he know anything else but conflict?
And can we please talk about McCain without constantly being reminded over and over and over and over and over that he was a POW, and he suffered for 5 years? WE GET IT. But that's not the answer to health-care, or high gas prices.
By the way, I remember Rick Warren telling the audience that Obama and McCain would be asked the same questions, and that Mr. GI-JOE was in this "Cone of Silence" so he couldn't her the questions.
What I want to know is, "Why Wasn't He?"

"I'm 14 years old and I'm still smart enough to know that the economy isn't in our minds, my dad was layed off, because bush sent his company overseas."
It was Bush that sent your fathers job oversea's. Does Bush run your father's company? Did Bush sign NAFTA in the 90's?
There's pleny of jobs in this country for people to transition careers.

and how is socialism and anti capitalism going to help you?

I'm 14 years old and I'm still smart enough to know that the economy isn't in our minds, my dad was layed off, because bush sent his company overseas. I cannot understand why anyone would want 4 more years of this. I finally realized that mccain could win because of selfish rich people who want to keep their 7 homes and not have to ever have to help anyone not as fortunate as they were. Obama will help! You people who think otherwise are obviously afraid of his skin color that he will terrorize our country!Open your eyes to the world, and try to push past the fact he does not "look like the guys on our bills." and has a funny name. OBAMA!!!

"Tell that to T-Boone"
and T Bone's plan to replace cheap effecient oil is what...
a 100K Hydrogen Car
electric - without nukes?
I'm also amazed how anti-captitalist democrats are jumping all over T-Bone. Who has already made a small fortune will make a small fortune on his Wind Farms.
Obama's energy plans is hope and dreams not based on reality.

McCain is not like other Americans. The only private sector job he has had since he was 18 was working for his father-in-law.
and Obama has done what? Community activist. A few years as Senator?

"Obama's energy plan is about the size of a small dictionary. Again it is like you guys take pride in being ignorant. Inflating tires will save more gas then all the damn US drilling you can muster."
That is total nonsense and everyone knows it. Obama and the DNC are missing a chapter it's called DRILL. We have enough to last us at least 60 years. We can OIL out of the ground and in our tanks in short time. Nothing else will ready for 15-20 years.

"I don't care if McCain has 27 houses, the fact is Obama sucked at Saddleback last Saturday and CNN is rerunning it all weekend! Can't wait for the debates and Obama's lengthy "nuanced" answers that put us all to sleep.
McCain '08/Hillary '12"
Another dumb and sad Hillary sore loser.
As for Saddlebrook, what "Honor" do you see in a man who was supposed to be in a "Cone of Silence," only his conniving self wasn't? He was in his motorcade, prepping for the questions! And then he comes out on stage and tells a bold-face lie on national tv (ala Hillary/sniper fire) that he was in the room!
I guess you like those liars, hmmm?
Yeah...John McLame, he's so honorable.

Funny how suddenly all these McCain supporters are crying "FOUL!" now. When they were calling Obama an elitist, it was perfectly fine. Now that McCain looks out of touch, it's suddenly a horrible thing to do. Quite laughable.
And where do you people get off saying Obama is attacking Cindy McCain? I've never heard Obama mention her name, or any of his campaign staff. Quit making up crap. But I sure remember McCain's henchmen attacking Michelle Obama.
If Mccain doesn't own any of those homes (like all these air-head excuses are being made for him), then why didn't he just say he doesn't own them? Get real - this old fart owns them, along with a piece of the Diamondbacks baseball team, and a million dollar parking lot!
As for Rezko, last I checked, he was on trial (not Obama), and nothing illegal was tied to Obama, so it's a non-story. You clowns really don't want to bring up all the ties McCain has to the Keating Five, and Jack Abramoff, do you?
Finally, William Ayers was never convicted of a crime...and I think Obama was 8 years old when these "Alleged" crimes took place. All those charges were dropped, so I'm trying to see where Obama's crime is in all of this, LOL
You guys are looking desperate trying to cover for McGrumpy, LOL

Give the McCains a break. They got their money the old-fashioned way: they inherited and married it. That's not their fault.

DT: Perhaps you could direct us to just how and when John McCain questioned Obama's patriotism.
Can't do it? I didn't think so, but it makes a cute talking point for the DNC.

This is my first time reading comments on this site. Very intersting. I thought the Obama ad was clever, but not negative. For it to get McCain's people freaking out like this means it has hit the mark. After weeks of putting up with questions of his patriotism and being accused of not putting country first, elite, celebrity etc, I am glad he finally started fighting back against Bush's people and that is who it is. McCain use to be ok, and I wouldn't mind the 2000 McCain being president, but now this one, he can't make a statement without his campaign making him come back out and retract it..like he is a puppet. The old MCain also would never get in bed with the people who slimed his wife and child in 2000..that was deal breaker for me. No one should disrepect your family and you go sell your soul to them..but then he disrepected the first family also...why should I trust him..Obama08

Apparently Obama has never heard of:
a) Owning investment properties;
b) prenups and not knowing exactly what one's spouse owns;
c) that McCain deliberately separated himself from his wife's finances just so this kind of class warfare crap couldn't be played against him.

If Obama can see the capital gains tax rising to 28% doesn't that severely limit my incentive to invest in the stock market?
When Obama implements a wind fall tax program what will his plan be when retail gasoline stations simply raise the price to counter the tax?
40% of Americans do not pay income tax how does Obama plan to give these people a tax break, when they do not pay income tax?
When Obama raises taxes what will his response be when a small business owner simply lays of an employee to cover the cost on his bottom line?

Obama's energy plan...check the air in your tires to see if they are inflated properly.(!!!)

"By the way, does Obama know how many states there are in the U.S. (he stated there were 57 at a recent town hall meeting)?
Thank god a Republican didn't say things this stupid-we'd hear it a million times from the mainstream liberal media.

McSenior having trouble remembering what bills he voted for so what you talking about??? You really do not want to match a guy who graduated at the top of his law school with one that graduated at the bottom of his Navel Academy. You cannot be talking about that 72 year old guy who said he does not use the internet could you?
