Sen. Collins on Edwards: 'Dontcha Think He Is The Father of The Child?'

August 14, 2008 9:26 AM

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, talking with a local Portland radio station -- the Q Morning Show -- dishes about the scandal involving her former colleague, former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC.

"Unbelievable," said Collins. "He presented himself as this family man who was devoted to his ill wife, his little children, his older daughter, so the hypocrisy of it. I try not to judge people's personal lives, because you never know what's going on. but in this case he so presented himself as someone who he was not. Plus when your wife's going through cancer! I mean, gee!"

Collins continued to dish, asking the morning show hosts, "dontcha think he is the father of the child? Would he be sneaking into the hotel in the middle of the night to see a child who's not his? I don't think so!"

Watch Collins' remarks HERE.

The junior senator is up for reelection this year in Maine, increasingly a blue state.

I’ll tell you why his polling numbers keep heading south: the folks who didn;t trust or like him and were for Hillary, like him less now. The folks who liked him then are wondering what in fact he stands for since he has reversed almost every ’stand he had duing the primaries. Americans are not idiots, although Obama treats us as such. we are hardworking, educated (even if it is just street sense), folks with long memories. He is the least qualified candidate this country has ever seen and besides his only positive attribute: his biracial heritage, doesn’t have much to offer the US, when it’s all laid out on the table. The democrats better get Clinton back before they lose in November. As an Independent, i am watching and learning about both these candidates and the better choice is actually, gasp, starting to look like a maverick Republican. Never thought that would happen.

The bottom line is that if the democrats want to win a presidential election, they need to come up with a credible candidate. Charisma and credibility are not the same thing. His lack of experience is glaring. His inability to tell the truth and his unpatriotic gestures will lose the election in November.

The fact that Obama is unworthy is beginning to surface

SP if voting party line almost all the time is being a moderate then Ms Collins is a moderate Republican right winger who lets the party do her thinking.

Extra-marital affairs are nothing to condone, but they don't necessarily impede governing. For instance, Bill Clinton ended his administration with a significant budget surplus and gas at 1.20 a gallon; there were eight years of relative peace and prosperity. However, some of his terrorism plans weren't implemented in the last two years of his presidency thanks to the Starr prosecution and impeachment efforts. In reality, affairs outside of marriage aren't uncommon, nor is lying about them. But they can sure be major media attractions in a three ring circus.

Why do you people in Maine elect two congressman both Democrats a Democrat as Gouvnor then turn around and elect two Republicans to the Senate to block any legislagion your two Democrat congressmen vote for, thats grid lock and plain stupid.

Susan Collins is a very moderate Republican, well-liked in her state by members of both parties, & one who obviously feels free to say what she really thinks. She's hardly deserving of the 'lying Republican' tag, & that attitude is very discouraging. I'd also like to hear why she's wrong - it sounded dead on to me.

It's just takes time for people to see the real Obammy. They have and thus his ratings have dropped. McCain is the real deal. You get what you see. He doesn't come with smoke and mirrors like Obammy. People won't like what's behind the curtain if Obammy is elected.

That's rich. A Republican senator lecturing somebody on ethics.

"Why is Edwards a political has been. McCain cheated and then divorced his ill wife for a beautiful rich younger woman named Cindy."

Well, for openers McCain wasn't running for national office at the time and didn't get caught by the media and then lie about it.

Other than that, the situations are identical -- meaning they're not.

Nothing corrupts like thinking you have absolute power!
Me thinks you are right on this Susan.
His girl has been paid the really big bucks to keep this under wraps.
Boy what a heavy cloud John must live under.

1)Both Elizabeth and John Edwards deliberately mislead the American voter on their family values and what they stand for. The President and First Lady are supposed to be role models for us and our children. Philandering or lying is not what we want our children to do.
2)It is no wonder that women with little education stay with abusive and cheating men. Again, we have a female lawyer who not only would receive millions in a divorce settlement, but could earn a very nice living to support herself. YET, she decides to stay with a man who has cheated and lied to her and her children..Mr Woodruff failed to ask mr. Edwards had cheated on his wife before..I think I know the answer.
3)We all know that Mr. Edwards has been earned large amounts of money in his clever legal practice. It is interesting that he "threw" paternity issue back to Ms. Hunter. He could have said that if there is anyway he is the father of the child he wants to support and care for her and would ask the court to order one a paternity test. Since he apparently lied to his wife about seeing Ms.Hunter in July and there continue to be reports he saw her a number of other times after he told Elizabeth that the affair was over, the fact that he did not pursue this line to get a court order to clarify the paternity issues, make me think that he continues to have a lot to hide.

As someone who contributed to the Edward's campaign 04/08. I am in 100% agreement with Sen. Collins. How could I have been so wrong about him? I feel very sorry Elizabeth and the children, but not John.

Posted by: FL Voter | Aug 14, 2008 3:03:16 PM

John Edwards, John McCain, Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich.....just to name a few.

Posted by: Ben Straub | Aug 14, 2008 1:51:42 PM

Why doesn't the MSM report on McCain's affair a bit, after all he is running for president. At least Edwards didn't divorce his wife to marry his mistress like McCain did. McCain is the one who is in an adulterous marriage, what moral values to have in a possible president !!!!!

Posted by: dems for the white house | Aug 14, 2008 1:49:59 PM

John Edwards should be sued for him to return all campaign funds.

Posted by: ragler | Aug 14, 2008 11:50:53 AM

Why is Edwards a political has been. McCain cheated and then divorced his ill wife for a beautiful rich younger woman named Cindy. The proverbial home-wrecking 'other woman' is now up for our country's 'first lady'. McCain's atrocious behavior hasn't hurt him one bit, even amongst women's rights advocates and pro-Hillary supporters, many of which blindly ignore his gross misogynistic antics. Unbelievably, they are gladly standing by the philandering McCain, just to punish Obama.
