Shrum On Clinton Memos: An "Ugly" "Appeal to Stereotypes"
August 11, 2008 8:45 AM
Bob Shrum, the chief adviser to both Al Gore and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, in their 2000 and 2004 presidential runs, had some harsh words for the internal Clinton campaign memos that discuss attacking Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as something less than American, as reported by Josh Green in The Atlantic.
'The notion that somehow or another that you could appeal to stereotypes like that -- suggest Obama was un-American -- would backfire in a general election and be absolutely lethal in a Democratic primary," Shrum told ABC News. "I think it was one of those memos that was written, looked at by the candidate and wisely discarded."
The memo, written by Sen. Hillary Clinton's top strategist, Mark Penn, is "an appeal to stereotypes, it's an appeal to prejudice," Shrum said. "I think it's ugly and I think if Hillary Clinton had done that, she would have permanently besmirched her reputation, her legacy, and her place in American politics."
Of Penn's March 2007 memo that correctly identified the coalition that brought her primary victories in states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, Shrum says, "it's interesting if somebody produces a memo that says we need to go after these invisibles: lower-income voters, women, blue collar voters; and then produces a strategy that all through the summer, and into the Fall and almost up to Iowa is cautious, calculating, triangulating, and is basically a replica of President Clinton's 1996 reelection strategy when he had no competitive primaries. I mean, it's undeniable that she ran on inevitability, she ran as the candidate of the establishment, she ran as a quasi-incumbent in a year of change. It was a terrible mistake. So if Mark Penn understood what the targets were in March, maybe they should have come up with a strategy that would have reached those targets."
About the tremendous amount of infighting displayed in these memos -- and indeed, in the very existence of the Green story itself -- Shrum said, the Clinton "campaign it seems, from these memos, to have been at least as focused on the staff going after each other as they were on going after the nomination and getting past Barack Obama."
"By the way, one thing we shouldn’t ignore in all of this: they can all stand around pointing fingers at each other, they're not pointing fingers at the one person who deserves the most blame for their defeat, and that is Barack Obama," Shrum added. "He was an extraordinary candidate who resonated with what America feels and felt, and what Democrats felt as he went through those primaries."
Is there anything Obama can learn from this story and these memos?
"There's a certain strength in the sense of centeredness and almost the serenity that the Obama campaign has displayed," Shrum said. "They have a strategy, they've executed it consistently, they don’t get thrown off by day to day polls. I remember last September, there were all these people who were saying Obama is behind Clinton. He's got to go out and he's got to attack her, he's got to run negative ads. And some of his own people and fundraising people said that, and he held a conference call and he said, 'I'm not doing that. I know what the strategy is, I know what I want to say. I know how to reach people.' Now I'll tell you something: you're a lot better off in a campaign with a strategy consistently adhered to, than with 20 people debating ten competing strategies moving day to day."

according to current poll projections - Obama can count on 141 solid electoral college votes with another 97 leaning his way. McCain has 99 solid and 64 leaning. 270 are needed to win.

The dirty little secret is that the media has been complicit in nominating a flawed candidate and now they're blaming the Clinton camp or anyone else they can think of! They know that Obama is nothing more than a puppet. Big international interests are the ones who will be pulling the strings. And guess what, kiddies - they are anti-American!

There's a lot of talk about Obama not being qualified and not enough talk about McCain's unqualifications. He's definitely too old and showing signs of his age almost every day. He doesn't strike me as being terribly sharp anymore. This isn't his fault but he's clearly lost a few steps since 2000. His whole stature just isn't presidential. And don't even get me started on his temperment. Experienced or not, you have to worry about how a deteriorating mind will hold up under the pressured of being president. That's a legitimate concern for the man's health. You guys can vote for gramps if you want but I just don't think he's up for the gig.

the funny thing about racists - they don't know they are racists! lol Unless you are an American Indian - you are not an American either. the funny thing is that John mcCain was born in Panama and obama was born in the United states. Who's the outsider? What a bunch of dumb americans.

Amy - McCain is an empty head. the guy is stupid. He can't remember his lines. No way will he lead this great nation! Start crying now!

I couldn't be happier that Hillary Clinton lost. I am estactic that McCain is using her campaign tactics and he will also lose. Mccain is an idiot. All we know about him is that, due to his own incompentence, he was shot down and was a POW for 5.5 years. That qualifies you for military disability payments - not for President. He has done NOTHING in the Senate but plot for the presidency. Let's not forget that he has had several mistresses and married the one who could finance his senate career. John McCain isn't fit to shine Obama's shoes. He is so jealous of Obama's brilliance, he can sit still. His commercials are like him - downright stupid. Oh I forgot - he did graduate at the bottom of his class (5th from the botton) dumbass!

The reality is that the Obama rate increases would hit millions of Americans who make well under $200,000. In 2005, 47% of all tax returns reporting capital gains were from households with incomes below $50,000, and 79% came from households with incomes below $100,000.
By the way, a higher capital gains tax rate isn't the only middle-class tax increase that Mr. Obama is proposing. He also wants to lift the cap on wages subject to the payroll tax. ... Ignoring the no-tax pledge he had made five minutes earlier, Mr. Obama explained that such a tax increase was nevertheless necessary.
In other words he dodged the question, as he so often does with impunity. But thanks to Charlie Gibson's persistence, on 90 minutes, Mr. Obama didn't get away with it. The voters learned a lot about Mr. Obama, who needs to learn a lot more about taxes and revenue.

this was posted elsewhere on ABC by someone else. Do we need a ruling by the US Supreme Court on the eligibility of BO. I hope there is a ruling if needed before the election and not after the election.

The DNC is a joke. Barry was an adult citizenship of Indonesia proven by his using an Indonesian passport used to travel to Pakistan in 1981, his own operatives rummaging around in state department files to try to purge the docs on their ineligible POTUS candidate, makes Nixon erasing the tapes look like a sweetheart picnic. He's off in Hawaii trying to mop up his Barry Soetero birth certificate mess, a little strong arming, a little hush up advisements to some key relatives. What he's got to do is unseal his original birth certificate to try to make it look like he was never a citizen of Indonesia, which he was (is still?). But he was adopted by Lolo Soetoro and moved to Indonesia and became a citizen knowingly into adulthood. He also never legally changed his name to Barack Obama. Man! What an Article II unconstitutional mess! These people can't even run a good con job, I mean if you're going to perpetrate the biggest con on the American public since the inception of the United States of America, you probably should do a really good job of it. If the DNC is a joke, all its candidates are a joke too. Notice the focus of attacks is back on Hillary? Go to it and see who owns barrysoetoro.com too! It's a riot!

It is more important to say the truth than it is to worry whether someone will characterize those truthful statements as "ugly...sterotyping." It is time to begin calling a spade a spade.

AL from NJ--Great post--keep the message going--
Dear Clinton Dem,
With the convention just around the corner, it is imperative that Democrats all around the country understand that whether or not Hillary is nominated, we are in this for the long haul.
This primary has revealed DNC "leadership" to be corrupt, mean-spirited, and lacking respect for basic democratic principles. They have completely and effectively ceded the moral high ground to Republicans at this point.
• We have seen the race card played, with assistance from both Dean and Brazile.
• We have seen rampant sexism with no objection by the DNC.
• We have seen the superdelegates endorse as quid-pro-quo for campaign contributions.
• We have seen arm-twisting of the congressional delegates by "neutral" Nancy Pelosi to declare for Obama.
• We have seen an unabashed ageism campaign against John McCain, calling him "confused", and that he has "lost his bearings".
• We've seen a softening of support for the gay and lesbian community.
• We've seen caucus cheating.
• We've seen intimidation of Hillary supporters, hack attacks and coordinated threats against voters and media that dare to dissent.
• We've seen manipulation of the party nominating system and media to favor one candidate over another and the outright redistribution of votes cast for one Hillary and given to Obama.
This is now a democratic party in name only.
TAKE ACTION:
We need to get the word out.

Why is it that Obama supporters think that somebody who doesn't support Obama is a racist? I am so sick of hearing that excuse. That is just tacky and weak. Why can't you just accept the fact that we don't like Obama because of his apparent judgment, inexperience, glibness, lack of leadership, pretensions, machiavellian, etc. I suppose you don't like Hillary because you hate women. How juvenile do you think we are or, more importantly, what's your problem?

B0 is divisive, inexperienced, egotistical, narcissistic - would make a great Rock Star, though!

I don't have to get over it. You see I supported Hillary mainly as an anti-Obama person. I don't believe Obama is qualified to be president and yes, I am angry that Hillary wasn't the candidate as she is much more qualified than he. Lastly, I think this is still America and I can be just as angry as I want and I don't have to get over it just because some Obama supporter thinks I should. I used to vote the party line, but not any more. I think Pelosi and Reid are weak leaders for the party. I didn't like the way MI and FL were handled. So get over yourself! It is quite liberating to now be an independent.

The one thing Barack Obama's candidacy has done is make this country confront its issues with race. That's a good thing. The sad thing is that the discourse proves that we are far, far away from the ideal notion of equality and justice for all. Whether or not Barack Obama becomes President will be decided by White people. So whether or not he's elected will say more about Whites than it ever will about the minority populations in this country. This is your world; we just live in it. Barack Obama is one of the best and brightest--in this country. He's as qualified to be President as anybody who threw their hat in the ring this election year because no incumbent is running.

Shrum is a hypocrite! Pity he wasn't outraged at the B0's Campaign for the memo they circulated about playing the race card against Hillary and Bill! I can't wait till it is his turn to be thrown under the B0 bus!

The Clinton campaign was exercising reasonable caution and appropriate ethics to negative ads, unlike McCain and his camaign. There's a Time analysis on the McCain camp video, The One. Anyway, the analysis points out anti-Christ imagery in the video. There is a multitude of other similar trash, from Obama anti-Christ bumper stickers to the e-mails and Google hits. I watched the video and it indeed had sinister undertones far beyond mocking Oprah's declaration, which I've done myself.

amy - "Obama is not electable" - Are you going to be upset when an unelectable candidate wins the Presidency?
Posted by: jmengate | Aug 11, 2008 7:59:32 PM
Virginia Independent - "she will have the luxury of waiting the four years through a McCain presidency" - You do realize that if Senator McCain wins in November that both Senator Obama and Senator Clintons' political career is done, right?
Posted by: jmengate | Aug 11, 2008 7:56:04 PM
Even if Hillary doesn't win the roll call at the Convention, she will have the luxury of waiting the four years through a McCain presidency; during which time she will continue to increase her support base, work on legislation, and build her own political identity (separate from her husband's). Smart strategy from a smart woman!
