Stephanie Tubbs Jones, R.I.P.
August 20, 2008 7:29 PM
The weirdness of the media reports of her death aside -- first she was said to have passed away, then not, now we're told she died shortly after 6 pm this evening -- the death of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, is a big loss for House Democrats. Not politically -- the seat will stay Democratic -- but emotionally.
Tubbs Jones was probably Hillary Clinton's best and strongest surrogate. She was an incredibly inspiring figure in Ohio -- the first black woman to ever serve in the House representing the Buckeye state. She was a former judge and a force to be reckoned with in the House.
And she knew how to operate within Congress -- she was very savvy. The first black woman to serve on the House Ways and Means committee. She also had a decent sense of humor -- check out her appearance on "Better Know a District" on The Colbert Report.

I am very sad and still cannot believe the sad news - she was a beautiful person and that beauty shone through in that lovely smile of hers. She was unpretentious, sweet and loyal, and stood with Hillary to the end. God rest and save her soul and comfort her family and friends.

Stephanie was my Dorm Mother at Case Western Reserve University. She was in Law School at the time. Stephanie commanded respect and taught us that the rules truly applied to us. She was a role model to the numerous African American Students who matriculated to CWRU from inner city schools across the nation. We were blessed by her leadership at an early age. I am proud to be among those whose success can be attributed to this stalwart for education and brilliant politician.

I will miss her beautiful, smiling face. God Bless Stephanie and her family.

STJ was my representative When I lived in Cleveland for 4 years and a more passionate, outgoing and brilliant delegate in Washington could not have been desired. Her commitment to the community she served was outstanding. Her district held both one of the richest and one of the poorest neighborhoods in Cleveland (she remained living near the poorest area where she had grown up) and all voters respected, and most importantly, trusted her. I had the privilage to meet her several times and she was extremely funny and an dazzling person. She will be unbelievably missed by everyone. The Cleveland community has lost one of its stars and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

I was first introduced to Congresswoman Tubbs Jones during the heated primary race and was immediately impressed. She had an indescribable magnetism and her loss is felt nationwide. My condolences to the family and rest in peace.

She was great, I loved her and not just because I'm a Hillary supporter. What a shame, she was so young....and was to fly to Denver next week.
Sad that 2 of Hillary's super delegates have died in the last two weeks.

United States Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones embraced her role of public servant and worked tirelessly not only for the people of Ohio but for all Americans. While many others today enter politics to further their own personal agenda, Congresswoman Jones worked to make America a better place for all who love it. She was a patriot. R.I.P.

The Democratic caucus has lost a strong voice. Ms. Tubbs Jones always seemed a woman of great humor and love of life. My condolences to her family, friends, staff and colleagues. I'm sure that all that knew her will miss her.

The first part of the clintons statement
Clinton, in a statement with her husband, former President Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, said Tubbs Jones' friendship "meant the world to us."
"We could always count on her to be a shoulder on which to lean, an ear to bend, a voice to reassure,"

Everybody knows PUMA is a front for McCain. Founder Darragh Murphy already $500 donated to McCain in February 2000.
She donated to only 200 to Clinton AFTER Obama clinched the nomination.
She has been a fraud from the start.
These socalled PUMA's were never going to vote for a Democrat come November. They're only fooling Repubs, thinking they have ‘won’ Democrats to their side.

Clinton's family statement on tubbs
The Clinton family released a statement saying they shared a friendship with Tubbs Jones that "deepened through every trial and challenge."
"Over the course of many years, with many ups and many downs, Stephanie was right by our side — unwavering, indefatigable," the statement said. "It was that fighting spirit ... that allowed Stephanie to rise from modest beginnings, to succeed in public service, to become a one-woman force for progress in our country."

I was so shocked and dismayed to hear the news about Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (despite any and all politikal disagreements). I'm offering a prayer for Ms. Jones and her family: Hail Mary, full of grace. Our Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

You will truly be missed!

Jake... What you describe as "weirdness" of media reports can probably be attributed to hospital privacy policies. My wife has worked in a hospital for many years, and under the new Federal guidelines, it is almost impossible to find out how a patient is doing, even if you're a close relative.
The most a reporter can get out of a hospital is usually "resting comfortably" if they will even tell you the person is a patient!
I am sorry about Ms. Tubbs' death, but if there's anything positive, it's that she suffered very little, if any. When my time comes, I'd like to go that fast and almost painlessly.
I watched my father die of lung cancer from cigarettes, and it was ugly. Ms. Tubbs died a more dignified death.

May God Bless her soul and comfort her family in this time of sorrow. Stephanie Tubbs Jones was a woman of strong independent conviction. I respect her for her solidarity and I will miss her infectious smile, she was a loyal friend as she proved this year in her actions. God Bless You, America thanks you for your service, now your job here on earth is done and rest will come.

This is so sad. Stephanie Tubbs Jones was one of the best members of the House. Vibrant, great sense of humor, a real activist, and progressive. She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, Stephanie. You will not be forgotten.

R.I.P.
She is at a better place ...
Posted by: HC4BO | Aug 20, 2008 8:23:34 PM
I know almost nothing of the lady but she has my deepest respect.
She had the courage to stand by HIllary when everybody else were jumping ship for their political future. The fact that she was black makes her action even more poignant.
I hope Hillary goes to her funeral and gives her eulogy.

We can only hope that such a woman, such a patriot, such a champion of
human rights, is honored as well as NBC's Mr. Russet.

Congressman Tubbs always had the BEST smile and always lit up a room.
I am an Obama supporter but I really appreciated just how enthusiastic she always was for Hillary.
Posted by: Mary | Aug 20, 2008 8:02:23 PM
Such a force...and what a shock. She clearly showed that race is not an issue, whatever your roots we all are the same at death. Her energy and humour leave a void in the political landscape.
