Thar's Gold in Them Thar Memos

August 11, 2008 7:12 PM

The Atlantic has provided a link to Josh Green's fantastic story as well as to original copies of even more interesting/prescient/bizarre memos by the campaign team.

Some must-reads: In October 2006, one month before Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, was re-elected to the Senate (and when she was supposedly not contemplating a presidential run), Mark Penn prepares a memo prepares a memo called "The Plan," where he declares that "HRC is the power candidate" and assesses potential rivals:

"Kerry significantly damaged. Even though he has money in the bank, many will ask him not to run. Gore waiting to swoop in later, when we hope it will look like too late."

In December 2006, Penn writes that former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher should be Clinton's role model. Voters view their president as the "father" of the country, he wrote, "they do not want someone who would be the first mama. ..A word about being human. Bill Gates once asked me, ‘Could you make me more human?’ I said, ‘Being human is overrated.’"

Here's the March 2007 Penn memo that says of Obama: "I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and in his values." Classy.

Thar's gold in them thar memos. Including a letter from the managing editor of the Washington Post in February 2008 complaining that a member of the Clinton communications team was falsely telling other reporters that a Postie had been fired by the New York Times.

I have to ask what memos are you reading? Bill wasn't trying to be negative. The memos themselves are anti-climatic. Josh Green's article and ahem "creative" interpretations don't have much in common with the actual memos.

Reading the Clinton campaign memos is depressing to me because of how negative Bill Clinton was (is?). He constantly wanted to hit negatively on Obama no matter the consequence to Hillary's image or to the Democrats' chances of winning the general election.

Deb,
That was 200,000 Europeans who came out to listen to an American politician ask Europe to stand by us as allies.

Did you notice how many of them were waving the American flag? How many flag waving Europeans have gone to listen to John McCain?

Now that Putin has demonstrated his willingness to threaten all of the former Soviet states (and by extension, Europe) by rolling his tanks over Georgia, where is America?

Oh, I forgot, George Bush and John McCain blundered into a war in Iraq without any strategy whatsoever, or national interest, or plan to get out again.

Putin is laughing at how these men have compromised American interests and power.

Poor Hillary. Are you kidding me there has never been a bigger collapse then Hillary had. She was the front runner from the start and she blew it. Not her staff HER!! She is the most pandering politician (well excluding her husband) ever. How about a gas tax holiday Hillary I could use 30 cents.

Quit the whining and move on are you kidding me. Your precious Hillary was handed the nomination and was beaten by herself and by Obama.

Vote for whoever you want but how much of a moron do you have to be to say it was stolen from her, do you live in the real world like the rest of us.

And all of you must really follow all of this to vote for McBush because all of the issues that your precious Hillary believes are things McBush has always been against. So go right ahead and vote McBush just stop making it seem like there is any reason other then you are bitter that Hillary blew it so bad.

Those of us who supported her do not feel welcome anymore, and you're all telling us to get over it. I'm sorry, but we'll probably never get over it.

**********************************

It might help if Obama stood up and publicly apologized to all the Hillary voters for abusing us. he apologized to the florida and michigan voters for abusing them. He apologized to all Americans for his associations with Black Liberation Theology and admitted he has problems with his citizenship. That he might not be eligable to be POTUS.

And he promised to be less corrupt in the future. He apologized to Hillary and Bill for pulling the Race Card and he promised to try to be less a racist himself.

EVERY ONE OF THE 18 MILLION VOTERS WHO ARE NOT ALLOWED THEIR VOTE AT THE CONVENTION SHOULD GO VOTE MCCAIN. MCCAIN IS REALLY A PRETTY GOOD PERSON. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY MORE ABUSE FROM OBAMA AND THE DNC. IF YOU VOTED FOR HILLARY AND GO VOTE FOR OBAMA THEN YOU ACCEPT THE ABUSE. THEY WILL THUS CONTINUE TO ABUSE YOU AS LONG AS YOU ACCEPT THE ABUSE. THE ABUSE WILL ONLY END WHEN YOU STAND UP AND SAY.

NO MORE ABUSE. I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY ABUSE FROM OBAMA AND THE DNC.

Sure it's low but these memos are only coming out now to derail a roll call vote at the convention. The Obama campaign and the DNC want to disenfranchise 18 million + voters who did not vote for Obama in the primaries to cast the image of 'unity'. These people deserve to be counted and to silence them for the sake of image is undemocratic at the very least and shows the true dysfunction of this party's leadership.

Jan and Deb
I agree with both of your comments 100%.

Why am I not surprised when the McCain supporters see nothing wrong with the Clintons' tactics? After all, John and Hillary are old drinking buddies, and agree on just about everything.

Senator Obama has twice the legislative experience as Senator Clinton -- but, of course most of that was in a State Legislature, and we all know that anything other than Washington DC experience doesn't count, right? What was that party that wanted to put more power back into the hands of the states? Repub-something. Haven't seen them around recently.

"Campaign is nothing to say about how a person can govern -- Just look at Bush. He ran the most successful campaign, raised the most money until Obama surpassed it."

Actually, Amy, how you run a campaign says a LOT about you govern. Easiest example: the current POTUS was kept in one of the most comprehensive campaign bubbles of all time. All the real work went on around him while he smiled and capered without a care in the world. With few exceptions, that's been the case in the West Wing since. Results? I recommend Richard Clarke's "Against All Enemies."

Obama is about as far from being an empty suit as McCain is from being a noble war hero. I will gladly stipulate that the Clintons' campaign was badly planned and poorly executed through no (or very little) fault of the candidates, but it is over. Vote for McCain if you must, but vote. Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Truth be known....conservatives have
FAR less animosity toward Obama than
Hillary Dems do. It's a given that
the "big tent" party is really an
exclusive little club...in your power
circle. Once again, the Clintons are
the straw that stirs the drink. Obama
will be left dehydrated and prostrate.

Someone please remind John McCain that all of our soldiers are fighting in Iraq.... Remember the surge ? The one that Obama said would make us vulnerable. I've got some news for you Johnnie boy. Don't irritate Putin right now because you are not President and we like living in our country and speaking English. Take a break and go to your ranch for some barbecue.

It's so great that the 18-30 year old demographic (aka, the non-voting demographic) of America has been inspired by BHO's message of change and positivity.... Now all he has to do is actually get them to VOTE! Good luck with that! Too bad that's the core of his support. HAHAHAHAHA

"Me, I'm voting intelligence and public/community service."

Good. Check for it in the debates.

Jan, Obama lost 9 out of the last 14, and his victories were weak to be sure. I think this country is to be commended for wanting a black President, especially the Dem party pushing for that....they just have the wrong black candidate. Hillary was the most qaulified and the polls continually showed her winning against McCain. My mother in law (a die hard Rep) DID NOT want Hillary to win, as she knew she was the strongest candidate. The Dems brought this on themselves, and I'm afraid they'll never learn they only win when they nominate a centrist (i.e, Bill).

"And all we could do is watch Obama "limp" across the finish line, hardly winning a single state in the last weeks,"

Amazing how being vetted took him down..

Posted by: Al Johnson | Aug 11, 2008 11:37:59 PM

rodney....please give me the link to your fact regarding 95% of the Hillary supporters voting BO. All the polls say 1/3 of her supporters ARE SO NOT ON BOARD (and I'm guessing hundreds of thousands are lying and saying they will). Voter remorse and privacy in the booth do strange things.

*ageist, sorry

Posted by: Deb | Aug 11, 2008 10:49:34 PM

John's conscience...you know how Obama got 200,000 Germans out for his speech? He got Rheannon (a platinum selling German rock group) and a reggae star to come out for a free concert in the park. You can go to the rock group's web site (hope I spelled it right)....and see where they posted Obama campaign asked (payed?) them to play before his speech. You think and unknown Senator for the states really could get that kind of turnout without a lure? BUT OF COURSE, THE MEDIA NEVER COVERED THIS.
