The "Electable" Candidate Admits Affair

August 08, 2008 2:57 PM

Sen. John Edwards, D-NC, tells ABC News' Bob Woodruff that he did indeed have an affair with novice film-maker Rielle Hunter.

In an interview to air tonight on Nightline, Edwards -- who continually argued to voters that he had greater electability than did Sens.. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Barack Obama, D-Illinois -- denies, however, that he is the father of Hunter's baby daughter.

We'd always heard that Clinton remained in the race so long because she'd heard a bombshell would drop on her rival, Obama.

So she's partially vindicated -- she just had the wrong rival.

So, I could see the Obama brass knuckle campaigning as they are known for behind the scenes whispering to Edwards; "Hey that Rielle thing, not good huh John?" Getting the message he withdrew suddenly as to not have the news released.

I supported John Kerry and John Edwards in 2004. "Electable", I think not, they both turned out to be losers, and were thought to be the best we had in the Democratic Party. Comparatively, there is absolutely no way that the American people have enough informaton to authentically support Obama. We cannot even come close to predicting what negative impact that Obama will have in the future.

Stepping back one can consider others who would fall into this sort of personal trap and family crisis. Of course the creepy Clintons come to mind, but the list is fairly long.

Looking at it the other way, name a politician, male or female, for whom one would be surprised to have this personal failing exposed.

Edwards blamed this on an overinflated ego and narcissism.

How will Obama ever keep his in check? It appears to be 10X that of Edwards.

Lord knows what secrets the media is hiding about Obama. The MSM is as dirty as the politicians.

This stuff makes me sick. The talking heads justified their breathless, self-righteous fixation on a former candidate's affair by claiming that it revealed something about his character. They spent a lot of time conjecturing about "what would have happened if he'd been the nominee?"

They miss an obvious parallel on the latter...there's no need for conjecture. We do in fact have a presidential nominee who cheated on his gravely ill wife. Worse, he got a marriage license before he divorced her. If the chattering class is going to continue whipping Edwards, they need to apply the same whip to McCain.

Go ahead and register GOP and be proud of yourself when you vote for them. Just know, Mary Anne, that the current HHS Secretary seeks initiatives to limit access to birth control. If you TRULY FOLLOWED YOUR GIRL HILLARY, you would have known this a long time ago. And so would all the others voting for McCain because Hillary was wronged (like Gore, ran an inept campaign). Vote McCain, because you think he gives a crap about birth control?!

Any Man on this blog that has not been involved in discreet relationships like this should cast the first stone.

It is easy to critisize and castigate. But have you removed the log in your own eyes?

You guys need to know that whatever you write about the relationship would not hurt Senator Edwards more than it will hurt is Wife and Children.

We are all human afterall and the same color of blood runs through our vains.

The problem with America and Americans is that you expect your politicians to Super human and infallible.

I am yet to see a man that is infallible, so please get a life and quit punching the Man that is down.

What does this have to do with Obama? What Edwards did was his own doing, nothing to do with Obama. McCain had an affair with Cindy while his poor wife was trying to recover from a horrible accident, but his hands are clean I guess?

Jay Leno just had a joke on his show, saying that "Edwards was kicked off the list of speaker at the democratic convention for his bad behavior. He was replaced by Bill Clinton." - big laugh. Not so funny.

It should get as much press play as John McCains affair with Cindy Lou Hensley. Oh, wait a minute, it's already received more you say?

It's the Obama curse. Name one Obama supporter who hasn't crashed and burned or had something bad happen to them. Rezko (jail), Kennedy (brain tumor), Wright (lost his church), Jackson (disgraced civil rights leader), Edwards (predator), Michelle (ugly).

CNN is running all night coverage of this all too human situation.

Meanwhile, Russian jets are firing on Georgian tanks in what looks to be an all out war breaking out.

Priorities.

E,NY, where have you been? Nancy Reagan has endorsed Sen. McCain ever since he won the Repub. Nom. LOL! Stop talking off the top of your head! Wonder if the Obamas will diss Edwards in the fashion you describe above!

Posted by: Beckie | Aug 8, 2008 8:37:35 PM

You guys don't get it. John Edwards single handedly came up with the best pickup line ever. "My wife is in remission, would you like to F me?" It obviously worked. I think more guys are going to give this line a shot.

I give Edwards an A for pickup line originality.

And yes this is going to hurt Obama and hurt him big. In his endorsement of Obama Edwards said that Obama had great character. Well now we know that Edwards wouldn't know great character if it bit him in the posterior.

I keep posting this comment and it keeps getting deleted. I'm baffled as to why. Would someone explain to me what is the matter with my comment that ABC thinks it should not be viewed?

"I wonder if this will hurt the DNC with their most valuable voter block. Many forget, the DNC is 60% women." ----And so those offended women are going to go vote for ..... John McCain????? You should probably do a little background checking before you run away in horror from the mis-behaving Dems? Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and a number of others, have had nothing to do with John McCain after the way he treated, and cheated on, his first wife Carol, the one who stayed loyal and raised their kids during his years of captivity.

I wonder if suburban soccer moms like me are sitting at our TVs remembering when Edwards endorsed Obama over Hillary who OBVIOULSLY shared more of his opinions. I wonder if Obama knew about the bombshell then? This is just one more thing that confirms Edwards' opinion of women, namely his own wife. I wonder if this will hurt the DNC with their most valuable voter block. Many forget, the DNC is 60% women.

The sad thing is that Americans now have to rely on The National Enquirer to pursue Investigative Journalism when it comes to liberal politicians in whom the Mainstream Media have a vested interest. 2008 will go down in history as the Year Journalism Died. We've long been warned about the government curtailing a free press; we never dreamt that the press would put a clampdown on the truth all by themselves.

"In his endorsement of Obama Edwards said ..."
-----
With Obama's Rezko connection in the news at the time, I doubt that serious supporters of John Edwards put any stock in that supposed "endorsement".

Edwards is a VERY smart man: the fact that he had no POLITICAL praise for The CHANGEling spoke volumes.

Remember that Edwards is the only candidate who promised to END domestic spying. And it was Edwards who broke the politicians' infallibility rule, and thereby opened the floodgates, by apologizing for his vote on Iraq.

Whatever they do in supposed "privacy" -- an artifact of the past -- Edwards would be a great president, and The CHANGEling wouldn't.
