Today's Campaign Contest: Count the Young White Women in McCain's Anti-Obama Video
August 12, 2008 9:30 AM
How many young white women professing adoration for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, can you count in this anti-Obama web video that the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, was sending out yesterday?
One...two...three...four...sure are a lot of young white women in this thing....
Why do you think they put so many young white women professing their love for Obama in what is clearly an anti-Obama video? What would possibly be negative about young white women liking Sen. Obama?
When asked, the McCain campaign says they took the video from local news packages, but of course that doesn't explain anything.
- jpt
UPDATE: McCain campaign senior adviser Mark Salter writes to say: "All we are suggesting is 'the kids think he's dreamy. But should he be president?'"
UPDATE 2: Looks like the McCain campaign has taken the video off youtube.
UPDATE 3: The McCain camp has re-posted their video on youtube HERE with the explanation that they had to remove Wayne and Garth from the clip. "Video changed per Mike Myers' 'people,'" says McCain spox Brian Rogers. "Apparently we aren't worthy."

The problem with Obama is that everyone who knows nothing about Chicago politics has no idea what they are voting for. The Chicago Democratic Machine and the state Dem. party have ruined Illinois who now has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country at 7.2%, the highest sales and income taxes in the country and absolutely nothing to show for it. The roads and infrastructure are decaying so badly its disgusting, so much so I moved out of my home state to get away from the sadness.
So go ahead and vote him and the Chicago Cronies in. I dare you all to ruin this country. You have no idea the hell you are about to unleash on this country. You think Bush is a bad apple you don't know Obama.
Also, What the hell ius with ABC and their political coverage? Of the top5 stories on their page, all are about Obama? My good people, the fix is in, and if you don't know what they say in Chicago, let me spell it out for you...
VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN.
I still wish someone would investigate the reason the Chicago Tribune went after the divorce proceedings that got Ryan out of the senate race, and allowed Obama to win a state senate seat that had been controlled by suburban republicans for more than 50 years. It reeks of Chicago Dirty Dem. politics. Yet the story is covered up so good, it looks like Roswell.

This is not about racism. The only people making this about racism are the news people. Get over it. If McCain wins it will be because of the racist Americans. If Obama wins it will be because of his vision. It seems to me that McCain, or anyone for that matter just look at Hillary, are climbing against the news media's story growing racism focus. Get over it, and lets look at the two candidates for what they say and what they have done. Neither of these two are my choice candidate s/he was eliminated in the primaries.

McCain is the biggest flip flopper in the history of politics. On issue after issue, he's flipped whenever it suits him politically: McCain-Feingold, Offshore Drilling, Immagration, Abortion, Torture, Tax Cuts for the wealthy, Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance," Bob Jones University, etc. etc. you name it, he's played whatever side he thinks will work for him. Talk about an empty suit.
Additionally, he cheated on his first wife, divorced her after she waited for him to return from Vietnam (because she had been in an accident and was no longer pretty).

This election is simple, people. If you love George Bush and think he's done a great job as President, and want another four years of the same, vote McCain. If not, vote Obama. This election is about whether to stay the course with Bush's approach, as McCain wants to do. Love Bush? Vote McCain.

"...So they attack the strengths of Obama..."
Classic Rove politics...try and turn your opponent's strength into a weakness. Hillary started it...McCain is taking it to new extremes.
It's amazing...the righties are so bereft of any original thought that they have no other recourse but to project their own inadequacies on Obama.

You can do the same count and decide whether the candidate's own web site shows the same "lopsided" ratio of whites as the supposedly racist McCain ad. Be sure to look hard for Asian, Hispanic and members of certain religions, too.
Posted by: in_awe | Aug 13, 2008 2:01:40 PM
This McCain ad is not about race; it is about the mindless cult of personality that is the Obama phenomenon. McCain recently put out another ad that focused on the Media's Obama love-in. That ad featured a bunch of white men, like Chris Matthews, fawning over Obama. Was that ad racist too?
Obama and his sheep have cried wolf a few too many times.

I don't believe the vile John so-called War Hero McCain is racist. he is purely sexist. He hates women. I pity Cindy. All the money and media attention in the world can't change the fact that she is constantly belittled by a senile old fool.
Hillary could fight this. god bless america.

Plus, denouncing the other candidate's tactics is the worst possible campaign tactic. The point is to put out your own message and win the battle to define yourself. Otherwise you look like a weak, whiny, metrosexual wimp that runs to mommy (the media) for protection every time your little white dress gets dirty.

What does it matter how many white women are in the ad. Stop bringing up race it's not and should not be an issue.

Yep he told 200,000 cheering Germans anti American propaganda but refused to visit American fighting men. NO EXCUSE OBAMA CAN GIVE WILL EXPLAIN THAT AWAY.

"McCain's flunkies can't think of a single positive thing to say about their own guy . . ."
So they attack the strengths of Obama, which is his ability inspire and galvanize. They've also attacked his sophistication in foreign affairs along with his charisma. They've fed the delusional fears of the anti-Christ, which was the worst tactic. So what could be next?

Obama is to Neville Chamberlain as Churchill is to John McCain. Now how's that for a comparison? If you want to appease Russia, Georgia will be eaten up. Instead, let's follow John McCain's lead: the G-8 is on course to becoming the G-7 (but it's entirely up to Russia), and forget about NATO exercises with Russia (why should NATO train a de facto neo-Czarist regime with Putin usurping President Dmitri Medvedev?).

To paraphrase a famous New York Sun editorial:
"Nobody sees racism, but that is no sign that there is no racism. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the dangers there are unseen and unseeable in the world."

Sure, because people in small states should not get a chance to vote, right?
Even better, how about ONLY letting Hillary Clinton supporters vote. No one else. Then, maybe, just maybe, she will win. But if Mark Penn is involved, there is a chance she will blow it again!

Michael: Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Kinsey Institute showed that males with conservative views were bigger consumers of pornography than their liberal counterparts. Lots of pornography depicts well-endowed men of color satisfying actresses which could be at the root of feelings of inadequacy being more prevalent among the group that consumes the most porn in our society - white conservative males.

Michael: I am a psychologist and I think that you may be correct in what you said. I feel that this latest ad is playing on insecurities of men who are not confident with their endowment. John McCain approved the ad, maybe that says something about his self-esteem or lack thereof.

"If McCain is falsely portraying Obama as a self-absorbed rock star, Obama probably has"
He may not be a rock star although he is certainly self-absorbed. It's all about him. Always has been.
Posted by: Mack | Aug 12, 2008 7:16:16 PM
If McCain is falsely portraying Obama as a self-absorbed rock star, Obama probably has every right to portray McCain as a grumpy old man - but how many ads from Obama's campaign have you seen that try to shape the voters' image of McCain. Answer: none. Obama is concerned with the issues that he will face as our next President not at painting a false image on his opponent!

Nobody is suggesting that not supporting Obama is racist. If you don't agree with the things that Obama wants to do, then don't support him. But don't spread lies about Obama's religion, birth, ancestry, or personal and expect people not to think that you're racist
McCain makes racist ads. That's just a fact. He may not be a racist, but he sure acts like one.
Posted by: kath | Aug 12, 2008 7:11:56 PM
McCain is a disgrace, playing to the deep seated fears of 'white voters' in particular white men. MSNBC carried an article today entitled...'Can white voters be trusted to vote for a black candidate?". Nothing else matters in this election. What will you do? I don't imagine too many 'white Americans know of the O'Jays but the produced a popular song in the 70's with this poetically verse..."they smile in your face while all the time trying to take your place, the backstabbers."

Even if I do not agree with his political stances, I am obviously a racist.
Every day, more and more claims of racism. And it just seems to me to be small petty things. Damned if you do; damned if you don't.
If Obama wins, will every instance of legitimate criticism be met with this racial mud-slinging for the next 4-8 years?
If so... then I'm no longer to be counted among the undecided. I will vote and that vote will be cast for the other guy.

Imagine the uproar among the Neocons if the Obama campaign would have aired a commercial with black women supporting McCain and giving the reason as they think he is a fly dresser or that his body is banging and then having the ad accusing McCain of no substance.
Posted by: SickofGOPcorruption | Aug 12, 2008 6:51:20 PM
The only reason why McCain runs these ads, he knows it brings out the base of the republican party. If you notice some of McCain's supporters comments, they are quick to call a statement racist or someone a racist. Yet, I wonder many racist experiences they had in their lives. They goal is a simply one is to keep everyone's mind on race, and that way they chase away Obama's supporter.

The ad makes a valid point in showing the mindless emotion that marks so many Obama supporters. (I remember seeing actress Susan Sarandon actually say that she completely supported Obama - and couldn't wait to see what he stood for!) Nominating him was a major display of bad judgment by the Democratic Party.

Fool, the price of oil dropped due to reduction in usage by the US, talk of firm withdrawl dates by the Iraqis, and speculators selling off contracts to get out before the price dropped further. Notafool? Dont' think so. You should change your name to hippocampus impaired.
Posted by: napalminthemorning | Aug 12, 2008 5:43:10 PM
"Nobody ever talks about the effect that Obama's windfall profit tax has had on oil futures."
Oh sure, they do. A windfall profit tax will do exactly what it did last time: reduce consumption slightly but raise the price of gas significantly for Americans. The rest of the world won't see that increase. They will continue to consume at the same or increased rates as the costs to Americans reduces competitiveness and they get a competitive advantage.
In a pure commodities market (consumable non-renewables) tax incentives work. Tax disincentives don't. They are punitive and passed on to the customer.
Remember: these are international companies, not American companies. If we make it harder to sell in America, they sell elsewhere. It is a very different world than the one Carter faced and it didn't work for Carter all that well.
Speculators will react to the spectres of increased supply and reduced demand. You don't have to put the whip to the backs of the Americans to achieve that effect.
I predict you will see Detroit turn the hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles out faster than anyone believes. The problem is shelf marketing. They have to get them to market en masse while reducing other inventories and they have to account for the infrastructure. But even with a temporary fall in gas prices, they will go back up and the die is cast for alternatives.
Frankly, this will be fun. America is at her best with her back to the wall. We'll be fine. We're smart. We're industrious. We're motivated. We're winners. Go Team!

Posted by: Mike | Aug 12, 2008 5:35:22 PM
Nobody ever talks about the effect that Obama's windfall profit tax has had on oil futures.
But if I were trading oil futures, and I knew that selling oil was going to become less profitable... I would sell my futures. This would drive down the value for speculators.
And the price of oil would go down.
But Republicans wouldn't talk about that... because it doesn't help them politically. And that's all this is. Politcs.
And their donors want to make as much money as humanly possible selling oil.

Instead of posting a partisan ramble with no relation whatsoever to the topic of the article, like the bulk of the posters so far, let me proffer the following:
No ad is innocent. Every word is measured, every image is calculated. The fact that they are all young white women was measured and calculated as to the response expected and tested to see that it was successful in that regard. If you think differently, you are naive, and probably a member of the republican base.
In general, Obama's campaign message has been one of change, and that Bush's policies have screwed up pretty much everything, and McCain's policies are the same on all substantive issues. All ads are by definition one-sided and attempt to influence, but his ads to this point have been factual.
McCain's campain has been about scaring Americans out of voting for Obama. They HAVE used racists appeals. They HAVE lied directly through their own teeth. This is easy to verify, if you have enough intellect to tear yourself away from right-wing talking point outlets, like fox news.
Obama is counting on Americans being fed up with Bush's wholesale failures and McCain's complete adoption of those same policies that failed so completely. This depends on Americans being able to ascertain the truth from simpleton lies and innuendo.
MCCain is hoping that Americans are too stupid and/or lazy to fact-check the lies he is putting forth. this depends on Americans behaving pretty much the same way they did in 2000 and 2004.
Sadly, its possible that McCain's strategy is the more likely winning one.

re: " bush gets the credit by signaling to the market that we are finally getting ready to drill "
one might wonder if that's all there was to it, a 'signal from Bush', why it took him so long to give the signal.... after all, he is the president... and one might also wonder why with all the federal leases that have already been handed out for oil drilling, there is not more..... oil drilling

If you like the way things have been the last 8 years with Republicans doing everything from impeaching democrats to running up 2 1/2 trillion more in national debt, not to mention breking the constitution's laws and international laws, vote for McCain. Go on...do it, I really don't care to convince people anymore. Bush's record speaks for itself and it's obvious that McCain has the same twisted selfish idea about what America wants and he'll do anything to convince you of it...ANYTHING. I only know I want a real change in direction and scope, and McCain and his propaganda machine is not convincing me he is anything but a Bush/Rove mini-me especially with these propagandist attack ads. If you want more of the same then go ahead and vote for more of the same.

Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted "present" nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

..seems that on this blog, McCain can do no wrong and everything the Republicans have done with the majority in congress has worked out since 'W' came into office...every decision has been the correct one...
whatever has gone wrong can be attributed to the Dems from '07 on... well, that's normal for the Republicans to say that.. if Obama is so bereft of talent and ability, it should be easy for the Republicans to shred everything he says with substantial and creditable rebuttals, but, most of the ads I see on TV don't deal with policy issues at all.......
I don't think McCain is the 'riding on the white horse' savior that he is made out to be, and equally I don't believe Obama is any kind of savior. I do think that Republican policy has hurt this country over the 8 years and another Republican is not the answer.

Does anyone remember that after the last Clinton-Obama debate, when Obama got his butt handed to him, he stopped talking to the reporters assigned to cover his campaign (sulking, I suppose)? When one of the reporters asked him if he planned on ever taking another question from reporters, he responded, “That depends on how well-behaved you are.” I don’t know – I just don’t think a tendency to sulk when things don’t go your way is a very good quality in a presidential candidate.

notafool, The same percentage of black voters will likely vote for Obama as voted for Bill Clinton. You get my point! Nothing to do with race, just pride!

John McCain has served in Senate for well over a decade and pushed through major legislation.
Now let's ask the question of Obama. What has he accomplished? Nothing. No major legislation pushed through, no personal achievements.
John McCain's bravely refusing to be sent back from a prison camp and sticking with his comrades is MORE than Obama has done his entire life.

John McCain is the affirmitive action candidate getting into the Navy academy as a legacy. This guy is an empty suit. Can you name one thing McCain has accomplished in his life?

Even with the 24-hour-a-day media fawning, McCain is nearly even with Obama.
Even with all that cash, Obama can't pull away.
He barely even won his own party's nomination after losing 9 of the final 13 contests to Clinton.
Obama is a deeply flawed candidate. He's a first-rate con man to be sure, but nothing close to presidential material.
When Michelle Obama complains that "Our souls are broken," she is referring first and foremost to her husband. He's empty. He stands for nothing.

Of the 12 Republicans running in competitive Senate races — five of whom are incumbents —- only three have said they will be attending the convention.
“Nobody likes a funeral,” said a Senate Republican press secretary

Mike,
Why did blacks support Obama 9:1 against Hillary Clinton? Very similar policies, although Clinton's health care would have benefitted blacks more.
It clearly was racism on the part of blacks.

JJ, two questions:
When you read "Obama Nation" did you also bother to read the multitude of footnotes that back up the claims?
And if they're false, why hasn't Obama The Harvard Lawyer sued everyone making the claims? He sure trotted out his lawyers fast enough to block the will of the voters of FL and MI, and he sure used legal warfare to trample his competition in Chicago, so why not now? Wouldn't that be smarter than his "Fight The Smears" propaganda?

Tom In Colorado, The important question is, what has McCain done in 26 years except vote for failed republican policy that has threatened the American way of life, bankrupted the country and cause enough global warming to put a whole the size of Rhode Island in the Ozone layer. You think that is good enough to vote for him. Oh, I forgot to mention, give enough tax breaks to big oil to eliminate the national debt. If you are a true democrat, you would understand that republicans have never done anything for the middle class and you can forget about the poor. I know, I've voted for over 45 years and the last 8 years years have been the worse I've ever seen.

Well, let’s see. By his own admission, Obama spent his youth doing drugs. He hated his grandma and, in his words, held “a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s (white) race.” Then he joined up with Wright, Farrakhan and Ayers for the next 22 years.
McCain served his country and nearly died for it. He loved and respected his family and has lived a well-respected life.
Yes, the choice is clear.

Like the other commercials on the topic, this one, too, is hilarious. Obama, his blogbots and the MSM have no sense of humor. The McCain Campaign will keep this up because its working and the Obamabots will continue to expose their drooling rage.
Americans instinctivly do not trust folks who cannot laugh at themselves and also take themselves too seriously.

Why is it we're letting people who are obviously ageists get away with calling the rest of us racists?
