Unions Blast McCain as "the Real Elitist
August 19, 2008 8:53 AM
Liberal filmmaker Robert Greenwald has teamed up with unions to push this anti-McCain video portraying Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, as 'the real elitist."

The old man has these houses because of his wife. He didn't earn any this wealth by his hard work. He married into it.

Good video. It shows how uncaring McCain is about those who are being foreclosed on. Many of them are victims of the deregulation of the lending industry as government laws that protected the consumer from predatory lending were weakened or eliminated by the Bush administration. (Deregulation equals higher prices for the consumer and higher profits for the industry.) When McCain says some are doing the right thing, by getting a second job to pay their mortgages, (instead of saying the unfair interest rates in these loans are unreasonable and should be changed,) he sounds like Mr. Potter from 'It's a Wonderful Life.' McCain is too rich and identifies solely with the rich to work for ordinary Americans' concerns. Even with the military, he voted against improving the G.I. bill for our returning vets. He is only a friend to the wealthy.

John McCain doesn't just protect the interests of wealthy fat cats...he *is* a wealthy fat cat! Eight homes...hundreds of millions of dollars in inherited wealth..."five million" is rich? He is out of touch with main street. No wonder he doesn't want to tax the rich.

What does having money have to do with being an elitist? How many of you would turn down $5M / year? How many of you would like to have those houses that John McCain has? If you had them, would you consider yourself an elitist? I wouldn't. It makes no sense. Yes, many elitists do have a lot of money, but don't confuse correlation with causation. Further, in this specific case, we're talking about a man who spent years being tortured as a POW - Admiral's son or not, millionaire wife or not, this man has made sacrifices that you and I can only have nightmares about. I would think twice before assigning the elitist label. You're playing into the partisan nonsense that's taking over this country.
What you should really be concerned about are the actual elitists, the people who believe that because they have money and social standing, went to a fancy school, or just have a bunch of people kissing their *sses, they are somehow intrinsically better than you and can therefore tell you what to do or can take your earnings and give them to others in a manner that they (being omniscient) see fit. Government is not your friend, it is an inherently evil (if necessary to a degree) construction, and the smaller the better.
As for this video, it's laughable that it could be used as an indictment against Mr. McCain. Does nobody ask why this woman thought it appropriate to take out a mortgage with payments higher than her take home pay every month? I assume it was an ARM, but in that case, the best thing we can do is require clear, straightforward disclosure of terms on mortgages and similar contracts, and allow people to face the consequences of their decisions. Surely it does not require the dozens of pages of small print I signed (after reading them thoroughly) when I bought my first home this past spring. Regardless, this woman likely showed terrible judgment and now expects people who showed sound judgment to simply bail her out, which is ridiculous. I would have liked a nicer home, but I couldn't responsibly afford it. Credit rating went down because you went into foreclosure? As it should. Why should Citi or BoA be forced to lend to this woman when they will likely lose their money? Who should have the authority to tell them they need to do that? Nobody - it's their money, not ours.
America truly has become a nation of whining children - until we start seeing evidence of more responsible adults both in and out of politics, we are really going to be headed down the wrong path.

As a life member of the Teamsters, I can unequivocably state that labeling John McCain as an elitist is no more that misninformation and ultra-liberal gibberish.
While I don't have any experience with Mr. Greenwald or his work, the man does not represent mainstream union members.
At best, Greenwald represents union leaders who have succumbed to promises of less government intervention in their internal affairs and more giveaways in the potential of the socialist framework that would emerge in an Obama/? regime.
For the most part, neither union leaders nor liberal government elitists represent the rank-and-file union members.
Such is evident in the misinformation provided in the Greenwald video.

Obama knows all about elitists...they are the ones that attended his fund raisers in S.F. sunday night and ponied up about 8 million....the group that agrees with Obama about middle Americans clinging to guns and religion during tough financial times. Arugula eating arrogant Obama....go back to Hawaii.
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN!

Did you know, BH, that the Clinton's were the poorest residents to enter the white house?
And even with all the money they've since earned, they are STILL not elitists.
On the other had, Obama IS!
Maybe elitism is some sort of inherent trait which either grows or dwindles as one gets older.......
( I know one kid who's 9 and has all the signs....)

marylou, I don't think most of the 20-year-olds who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan will have an easy time securing their financial future. Many are permanently disabled or suffering PTSD. And most are not the sons or daughters of Admirals who will go on to marry a millionaire.
Posted by: cincyr | Aug 19, 2008 3:46:00 PM
cincyr, you can do both. In fact, you can do both at the same time. But if you have to choose, go for service in your 20s, securing your financial future from your 30s-50s, and service in your 60s and beyond as long as you're able.
How hard was that?

Great! put it on tv

McCain said, "I want everybody to get rich" but also said he wants to "inspire a generation of Americans to serve a cause greater than their self interest.”
So which is it? Aspire to be as rich as him or aspire to be a war hero like him?

Awe, it was soooo hard for McCain to get around Arizona without a private jet so Cindy bought him one.
How sweeeeeet.
BTW. How many loopholes did her corporations find to pay zero taxes?

East is east & west is west....
No one on these sites is going to change anyone else's mind about the candidates. It's an exercise in futility. As for me, I never voted republican in my life (would have, though, for Colin Powell) and now I certainly will not. They've turned really slimy and are NOT the party of the people. Besides which, I totally, unequivocably believe in separation of church and state and that seems to be a part of the constitution the republicans like to ignore.

An Elitist is someone who says for others to do something but they do not, Sound familar - the Liberals - the San Franciso millionaires Obama meets with and calls Americans Bitter!!
oh also the Union bosses who live in mansions while the union workers do the hard work!!

I don't think McCain heard Obama's answers. If he had, he would have entered the stage laughing his ### off!
Posted by: marylou | Aug 19, 2008 10:49:04 AM
Anyone who believes money=elitist is overlooking the fact that elitism is simply snobbery or an attitude of superiority. Money doesn't necessarily enter into the equation.
I've never seen so much class envy, but of course, Obama has stoked that in order to pander for votes by promising handouts right and left.
Win or lose, Obama is on track to become a very wealthy man. Will you then reject him because he has money? I suggest you look at the Clinton's backgrounds before answering. They were every bit as humble as Obama's, particularly Bill's.

Gee - how much $$$ did the Obama's make during 07'= I believe it was in the millions.
*********
Yes, he EARNED it by the sales of his books. You know, the ones he wrote by HIMSELF!! Unlike John McCain, who had Mark Salter write them for him.
But what can you expect from a D- student?
