Wolfson: Biden Is Second-Best Pick Obama Could Make

August 23, 2008 10:58 AM

Howard Wolfson -- the former adviser to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and current blogger at Gotham Acme -- writes in The New Republic that with the exception of his former boss, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., couldn't have picked a better running mate than Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del.

That's because Biden shores up some glaring Obama weaknesses, Wolfson suggests.

"The fighting in Georgia underscored the need to bring some foreign policy experience to the ticket," Wolfson writes. "No one does that better than Biden. Absent the situation in Georgia, Virginia Governor Kaine might have been the pick -- in effect Vladimir Putin vetoed him."

Nice line, Wolfie.

Wolfson says, "Obama also needs to improve his performance with lunch bucket and working class Democrats. Biden has spent his career appealing to those voters -- he literally commutes on the train every day to work -- and is very good at rhetorically delivering the old-time Democratic religion."

Wolfson does note that Biden "won't automatically bring along disaffected Hillary voters, especially those who are older women. But no one was going to do that besides Hillary anyway..."

Why do we vote? Most Americans chose Hillary, but she wasn't even considered. Now are they going try to tell us our vote matters. If Obama proclaims to be a uniter than why didn't he unite the party. I guess our politicians know more than the voters. The voters chose Hillary. You can bash Hillary all you want, but more voters chose Hillary.

Second best pick sounds right. Would have loved Hillary and her selection would have honored a large part of the democratic party. I can see where she would have overshadowed him. Biden seems to do the same thing in terms of experience.

As a liberal-leaning independent, I'm not sold on Obama - and his VP pick of Biden only sealed-the-deal for me that all his talk of change is just fluff. Rather than feel stuck between a rock and a hard place with Obama vs. McCain - I'm casting my vote for Nader/Gonzalez. Good going Dems.

REALITY CHECK TO PEACH who wrote:

BIDEN: "I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black. I don't believe he could have won had he been white. And the reason is, I think it was a cynical ploy by President Bush." It's like being a racist is a resume enhancer in the Democratic party. Biden has made so many racist gaffes and look where he's ended up."

Biden was telling it like it is. As an true African American-- not one of those poser saying they are in comments online, Clarence Thomas was chosen to darken the bench. He is a sorry excuse for a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United State. Never once in his tenure has he lead the pack on any decision-- he is a follower without a spine. Words like Uncle Tom come to mind
when someone mentions his name. He could never fill the shoe of his African American predecesor, Thurgood Marshall. Who consistently voted with the liberal block, became increasingly isolated as the court's make-up changed, and he was forced by ill health to retire and see his seat taken by the conservative Clarence Thomas.

Bush's appointment of CT as the replacement of a man who pioneered the fight for civil rights was disrepectful
to Marshall's legacy of fighting for those who are powerless.

So I stand by Biden and his assessment of Clarence Thomas.

Krista: Biden was not on the foreign relations committee for thirty years and McCain knows just as much as Biden when it comes to war and foreign policy. When it comes down to the nitti gritty McCain can and will put Biden in his place. I don't think that Biden has manners he is just has a big mouth.

Jo Chgo: I am born and raised in Chicago also and feel the same way about Obama. He is as phony as a three dollar bill and as crooked. I can't wait until Obama and Biden get into a disagreement because Biden is going to control no nothing do nothing say nothing Obama who don't have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. Obama can't run this country, if elected it will be in name only and Biden will be making all the decisions. This country is going to be in the biggest mess ever if Obama is elected.

nelissa: Hillary's voters are going to vote McCain because they don't like Obama and they don't like big mouth Biden. Since Hillary is not the nominee they made the right choice by ignoring Obama and leaving him in the dust.

I like Hillary, but I am happy with Biden. Because Biden is a white male, he can be tough without the media trying to put him in his place. If Obama is tough, they call him arrogant. When Hillary was tough, they called her a shrew and rhymes with witch.

But Biden can say what he wants and the Irish boys and MSNBC will love it. Just say "Scranton" and watch Chris Matthews get all warm and fuzzy.

BIDEN: "I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black. I don't believe he could have won had he been white. And the reason is, I think it was a cynical ploy by President Bush."

It's like being a racist is a resume enhancer in the Democratic party. Biden has made so many racist gaffes and look where he's ended up.

Don,

Biden was the chairman of the Senate judiciary committee and now chairman of the foreign relations committee.

Plus he has been in the senate for 30 years.

Tell me what makes McCain more experienced in foreign policy than Biden.

Dont tell me being a POW.

I am a real Democrat, born and bred in the blue-collared world of Chicago who will never vote for the phony poser Barack Obama.

He and Biden can start their own plagiarism club. Charter members!
