Yes We Kaine?

August 21, 2008 11:03 AM

For 15 minutes this morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met privately with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and Kaine's staff at the Omni Hotel in Richmond.

At 10:05 am ET, the two Democrats descended a staircase and shook hands with about 100 fans gathered in the atrium.

After the meeting, a reporter asked Gov. Kaine if Sen. Obama asked him to be his running mate. Kaine's response was the standard line he’s given all week: "I'm going to let the campaign speak for the campaign."

When asked what he and Sen. Obama talked about this morning Kaine said, "He visited with my staff just to basically say hi to them and thank them for all their hard work."

The two men are currently holding an event in Chester, Virginia, at John Tyler Community College.

Tyler was the last Vice President to hail from Virginia. After President William Henry Harrison died from an illness, Tyler became president, nicknamed "His Accidency."

UPDATE: From ABC News' Jennifer Duck: Sen. Obama spent most of his morning with one of the rumored vice presidential contenders Gov. Tim Kaine and the two appeared on stage together for over an hour at an event in Chester, Virginia.

Compliments between the two leaders were exchanged publicly at the event, however there was no mention of the vice presidency.

Kaine spent a majority of his five minute introduction praising Obama and attacking Republican rival Sen. John McCain.

“One of the things that makes me laugh the most is people who say a vote for senator might be risky—well, let me tell you what risk is,” Kaine said to the small crowd.  “When the economy is the front and center thing that all Americans are so concerned about right now, to put somebody in the White House that says ‘I don’t know much about economy,’ that is risky folks.  That’s what Sen McCain said and that’s risky.”

The Virginia Governor also tagged Sen McCain to President Bush saying the two are in “lockstep" and McCain would make the same choices as the president if he could do it all over again.

As Sen. Obama stumped to make the red state turn blue, Kaine sat to the side on a stool listening.  Sen. Obama also criticized Sen. McCain on Iraq, the economy, and McCain’s inability to understand middle class Americans.

I hope it is Kaine, I hope he asked Hillary and she told him NO! I really hope McCain asks Sara Palin to be his VP. See I have hope and change in mind without Obama!

President of the United States is above Obama's pay grade. Obama could run for president of Europe, when the job is created. Ha, Ha, Ha,...

Obama is like the captain of the Titanic, would you want the number two position? The more people learn about the real Obama, the better McCain looks. Hillary is smart, she is staying clear of the shipwreck.

Posted by: Thore | Aug 21, 2008 4:04:27 PM

Hillary is the only one that can help 0bama now. Kaine would be a joke of a ticket. Biden is an idiot as well.

The One is taking so long to decide, it makes me wonder whether it IS Hillary. It would make sense at this point.

All except for the Bill factor.

Obma, the affirmative action nominee, has lost 7 to 17 points in the polls in the last two months. By the election in November, he will be 14 to 34 points behind McCain. This will be the worst loss in modern day history!!! Looks like the puma people has a valid point.

Did Obama bring his "Obama Presidential seal" with him?

Posted by: Bart | Aug 21, 2008 3:51:16 PM

To all of you pathetic whiney Clinton supporters still stuck in the past..you can look yourselves in the mirror and thank yourselves if Obama loses. Then when the next war is launched and more young men and women are sent off to die, and women start going to Mexico for illegal abortions, and companies begin cancelling health coverage in lieu of McSame's $2,500 tax credit, you can pat yourselves on the back for a job very well done in electing 4 to 8 more years of Republican rule which is virtually destroying this country. So contrats to you. Be careful what you ask for, it looks like you may get it.

Posted by: DW | Aug 21, 2008 3:50:01 PM

The only way "THE ONE" will be on a winning ticket in November, is to beg Hillary to run for president and again begging to be the Vice Presidential pick.

PUMA - Clinton/Obama is the only way to victory in '08, for the democrats.

Posted by: Baron | Aug 21, 2008 3:48:51 PM

Hey Obama, is selecting a "qualified" VP above your paygrade.

Posted by: Bingo | Aug 21, 2008 3:41:18 PM

It looks like "The One" will be the one that will loose the election in a landslide. Just think, the democrats cheated Hillary out of the nomination, for this wanna-be-president.

Posted by: Arttie | Aug 21, 2008 3:39:21 PM

If Obama picks either one of those three he will not win. It will be another snooze fest for the Dems, just like Gore and Kerry/

Posted by: abe | Aug 21, 2008 3:35:21 PM

I also live in Va.and Kaine is about the %%%% thing I have ever seen. No,I will not raise taxes but I will raise every fee for anything I can so we can pay for all of these state workers who do nothing.I am no politican but I can see the waste of all the state spending. If you want a good laugh just watch VDOT operate!

Let's just agree to disagree. But please stop having my posts erased and having me bumped just because you do not agree with me. And please stop stop stop trashing our own party and our candidates. You, the Hillary people, have damaged the reputation of the Democratic party so much with your bickering and hateful comments that we WILL be stuck with 4 more years of Bush administration policies. But then McCain and Republicans must be grinning from ear to ear right now.

Posted by: lovinggrandma53 | Aug 21, 2008 3:29:43 PM

Given the increasing cold war rhetoric between the US and Russia, I would hope Biden with his background of foreign policy would be the veep choice. But we won't know until this staged cliffhanger comes to a close.

Posted by: kat | Aug 21, 2008 3:23:54 PM

I have lived in Virginia all my life and I think it is safe to say he is not very popular in his home state and having him as a VP is not going to give Obama the election here. He has already had at least one of his pieces of legislation "abusive driver fines" overturned. Not to mention we went from a budget surplus in two years to being deep in the red. His failure list in this state is still growing.

Posted by: tigger | Aug 21, 2008 3:10:30 PM

First of all Democrats have made ahuge mistake by selecting Barak Obama thier nominee! And now it's Tom Kaine as VP? Another inexperienced politician with few accomplishments? It would be like blind leading the blind! Having not won even a one major state during the primaries and having manipulated the caucuses with small groups of zealots, but now not in play for the presidential election, Mr. Obama is going to find himself stuck! Now with Wright and Ruzko scandals Sen. Obama is quickly losing the support of independents and men, and who knows what other catastrophe for Sen. Obama is coming down the pipe line? He’s been hanging out with such wonderful friends! Don’t forget the Ralphy is in the game too! That will be end of story for Democrats. The best chance they had winning the White House with Sen. Hillary Clinton. Get used to saying President McCain!

Posted by: charlesC | Aug 21, 2008 3:07:16 PM

Joe, why do you care what McCain spends on shoes? It's HIS money, not yours. Unlike what the liberals think, the money you earn is yours, not the government. It shouldn't be shared as Obama believes. Maybe Michelle Obama needs to send some money to her new found brother-in-law since she makes over $300,000. Should we make her pay? I think McCain probably doesn't know becaue most are probably in Cindy's family. They have seperate finances and that's what the left keeps omitting.

Posted by: justrighttoo | Aug 21, 2008 3:04:16 PM

If Obama picks a VP because of one state, he is not making a good choice. Now if he chooses him, because of one state and he is the only person he can get along with, that's another reason, albeit not a winning strategy. I'm not impressed with Kaine and it certainly will not make me vote for Obama. I still think his choice is Hillary. That would cause me to reconsider, but I almost hope Hillary would turn him down though.

Posted by: Susan | Aug 21, 2008 3:01:49 PM

Kaine is a mistake of giagantic proportions.

Posted by: Rose MacAskie | Aug 21, 2008 3:01:17 PM

The best choice is HILLARY!

Posted by: Karen | Aug 21, 2008 2:56:50 PM

I TOTALLY AGREE, EXCEPT, THAT I THINK HILLARY SHOULD BE THE NOMINEE!!!!

Obama is losing now and will continue to lose if he picks either Biden or Kaine. The ONLY logical choice would be Hillary. I don't see this happening, and I'm getting used to saying, "President John McCain!".

Posted by: temptest | Aug 21, 2008 3:00:25 PM

Doesnt' matter who Obama picks Obama is done for.

Posted by: tigger | Aug 21, 2008 3:00:10 PM

The best choice is HILLARY!

Posted by: Karen | Aug 21, 2008 2:56:50 PM

And the results are now showing up in the polls: not only are some key states like Ohio breaking toward McCain but the Reuters/Zogby poll today showed McCain opening up a 5-point national lead — and stunningly, voters said in that survey that he would be better handling the economy than Obama! That is the bread and butter issue for the Democrats, one they should be able to seize upon to capture seats up and down the ticket.

Posted by: alex | Aug 21, 2008 2:56:45 PM

Lisa Again... Having blindly supported the worst president EVER, TWICE, those on the right shouldn't exactly claim to be experts on gray matter... I'm just sayin'.

That's what makes this country gray.

Posted by: monkey | Aug 21, 2008 2:52:33 PM

Lovinggrandma53, Kaine was an ambulance chaser attorney like Edwards. I live in VA, and he is NOT popular right now because on his stand with taxes. I think Obama is making a huge mistake by not making Hillary the VP. The DNC can't stand her, but she DID get 18 million votes. I would think that would be a slam dunk. But, as always, the democras pick dull high tax Kaine or Biden. Biden would be a Republicans' dream. They can use Biden's criticism of Obama on a dialy basis! He sticks his foot in his mouth all the time! I think the democrats made a huge mistake in the primaries for not nominating Bill Richardson, he has the most experience of anyone in the party. Go figure, the dems have YET to figure out why they keep losing elections.

Posted by: justrighttoo | Aug 21, 2008 2:50:11 PM

==============================
Ah yes, but that's the big "IF". He's NOT all that popular here. He has managed to wipe out the surplus that Mark Warner (see photo under dictionary entry for "popular in Va" ) left us. He has gotten NOWHERE in pushing a transportation solution (critical to the Northern Virginia voters who put him in office in the first place) through the State Legislature.

On the other hand, maybe if a VP slot would save us from another year with him as governor.....

Posted by: Joe | Aug 21, 2008 2:35:47 PM

No you can't
With all the unfair press and media support for Obama, his campaign spending at least 3-1 on advertising, a “World Tour” with photo opts, huge crowds, superstar treatment, Obama should be trouncing John McCain by now. So why isn’t he?
Might the answer be that John McCain out shines Barack Obama as commander-in-chief? The Saddleback Faith forum clearly showed the difference. McCain can talk and think and answer the questions. Obama stutters, ponders like he has never heard any of these topics and wants to debate them publically. Just look at the questions at the last forum.
Of all of the people in the world whom would you consult as President for wisdom or advice, Obama said his wife and then his grand-mother, in that order (what)! Or how about the question when does a baby becomes a person. McCain stated at “conception”. Obama said that this answer was above “my pay grade” (what)! The public can sense a “real and definite” problem with Obama at the helm. He is too young and inexperienced to hold such an important office. Point being on vacation in Hawaii he held a “press conference” and read what one of his advisors wrote concerning what was happening in Georgia (Russian take-over).
Obama’s statement, “I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict.” “Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint and to avoid an escalation to full-scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected.” (what)! Georgia should show restraint when attacked by Russia. And, Obama goes back to his vacation---opportunity missed to show the American people that you mean what you say. Leave the family to enjoy Hawaii and fly back to see what you do to prevent further violence.
John McCain’s statement: “The news reports indicate that Russian military forces crossed an internationally recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. The government of Georgia has called for a ceasefire and for a resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should immediately work with the EU and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course that it has chosen.”
My reason for Obama’s failure is easier. On August 20th in North Carolina, at a town meeting, the last question came from a homeless veteran that was living in a shelter with other veterans. Obama gave his campaign speech “a stump substantive answer” to fix the problems. The homeless veteran can only wonder if the man deemed to be President will fix anything, for at every stop he promises to fix everything.

Obama has “no passion”. If he in fact believed what he was saying that it was so outrageous, disgraceful and dishonorable for the veterans to be treated in this manner he would have said ------ let’s drive over to the shelter, meet the veterans. We can talk with the people that are giving their services and see if they can suggest something that we can do to help. He could have taken the opportunity to fix or assist in an issue that he called “his passion”. He had time. From the town meeting he went to the Farmer’s market to have another “photo shot” to buy a few peaches from a common citizen.

It's not Yes We Kaine, it's Yes We McCain.

Posted by: young_voter | Aug 21, 2008 2:32:59 PM

Tim Kaine could be a good choice. Born in St Paul Minn, eldest of 3 boys, grad from Jesuit High School and University of Missouri, took year off of Harvard Law to work as a Christian Missionary and lived in Honduras teaching welding and carpentry to teenagers, finished Harvard Law, met wife, got married, 17 years handled a range of civil rights cases, entered politics in 1994, acted as a bridge builder between the council members of the divided Richmond City Council, 2 year council-selected Mayor of Richmond, was a Virginia Lieutenant Governor, than elected as Governor, has three children. Information obtained from AP, news wire, Daily press, Newport news Virginia, Kansas City Star. Not a bad choice.

Posted by: Lovinggrandma53 | Aug 21, 2008 2:32:02 PM

Michael R - my impression is similar, but I think Obama came off like Ned Flanders the ernest acolyte, where McCian seems more like Mr. Burns enticing the crowd with fresh meat.

Posted by: Flash Override | Aug 21, 2008 2:27:50 PM

If Mccain is a risky choice on economy because he once said " don't know much about the economy," has Obama ever run a big business? or Did Obama major in economics? or Obama like McCain just rely on economic advisers? It seem to be the same. There is no difference.

Posted by: Adam | Aug 21, 2008 2:26:28 PM

Kaine isn't it. He just got the word on that. Obama and he are friends and I think that he wanted to deliver the news personally. Kaine might be good but the ticket needs someone to show long term experience. I'm guessing Biden. He's got experience, class, and he's also a great attack dog.

McCain doesn't have any good choices...and his decision ghas now been shaped as...does he choose who he wants or who will win"

Obama's question has become "does he choose who he wants, who would be best in the role of VP under an Obama administration for the country, or now in addition (because of this long play of a roll out for marketing purposes ugh)will he be forced to take another candidate to win?"

Obama's decision speaks to two of his supposed watch issues...ego,character and power.

right or wrong...
Mccain's question does not bring character into it...and Obama's now does.

chances are if he had made a choice last week that was quick and strong and was about "who would be most effective in the role of VP?"

we would not be having this discussion.

Focusing more on the "wedding rather than the marriage" and not getting a strong VP out their tearing the legs out from the repubs...has hurt them

Posted by: dl | Aug 21, 2008 2:17:26 PM

I believe Obama should and will pick Kaine - if you look at a state by state electoral polling instead of the national poll which is useless, then you see that Virginia may be the lynch pin of the whole election. It's a dead heat in Va. right now. I know its still two conventions and 2 1/2 months until the election, but I would say - assuming Kaine is popular in Va. - that picking him is crucial to winning - if he wins, of course. But I don't think it can hurt him. And, of course, that's just my opinion - he'll pick whoever he wants.

Posted by: Mark | Aug 21, 2008 2:16:05 PM

dl that is popably the best way I've seen that put. Also I think if Hhillary does get offered and refuses because of "the sinking ship" and runs again She will still LOSE. Not enough people like her. I don't alot of other peole don't the only reason why she did so good is because republican women (PUMA) came out across party lines and voted for her. Now they sit there and pretend to be democrates, in order to try and keep the party divided. But I want to ask Meghan; What if she says yes?

Posted by: Joe | Aug 21, 2008 2:12:44 PM

If Kaine, smart move. About 3% of the semi-Republican leaning typically dumb US electorate will assume McCain has joined Obama and vote for Obama. Plus 3% is a very good VP haul.

Posted by: Howard | Aug 21, 2008 2:01:08 PM

I hope it isn't Hillary either. I used to respect her and her husband but after they started insulting me and people like me (18 million of us) I lost all I had. Could you imagine being president and having Bill on your butt the whole time.. That would suck.

You won't get your VP Text until Saturday morning, minutes before Obama takes the stage to tell the World. That is how he did it in the Primary for every Victory Speech.

My predictions he is telling people sorry but they didn't get it. He is going to pick a Woman Republican VP...to reach over all isles.. I SHOCKED THE WORLD!! I SHOCKED THE WORLD!!!

But come on, with all this teasing and self-important "secrecy" by Barack, I am at a complete loss to care who he decides to choose any longer. And I am a Democrat! Can you imagine the complete lack of interest brewing among Republicans? Lets stop the "rock star candidate" madness next week and roll call vote Hillary into the nominee position. Obama faces a dilemma. If he picks up HRC as the running mate, it could signal that he has decided he could not win it all by himself. He understands that the primary this time around hasn't been like anything in the past, and that HRC's women supporters would rather have a few more Scaglias installed as Supreme Court Judges than an Obama Presidency!! Obama the pragmatist is picking up HRC as the running mate.

Am a die hard Republican from Alaska who will be voting for Barack Obama regardless of who he chooses for VP except Clinton.
Obama can choose whoever he want and i think he is better than that war mongering crazy McCain, McCain has so many Gaffes..he doesn't know how many houses he own; he defines rich as having $5mil; he defines Americans struggling to make ends meet as being in a mental recession; he does not support insurance companies from covering birth control pills but supports coverage for viagra ectal for erectile dysfunction; he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 or more years; he wants to auction our children's future with $10bn a month war in Iraq while Iraq has a $79bn surplus. The list goes on and on and on. What a shame that anyone with common sense will even consider voting for him.

McCain is of the ruling-class and he will protect ruling-class interests, not the interests of the everyman. McCain cannot be trusted. If you’re a working-class person who cares about keeping a roof over his head, you’d better do yourself a favor and vote for Obama.

Will raising Kaine ( to veep) help Obama?

"Doesnt' matter who Obama picks McCain is done for." So said Hippiemom at 11:17:28 AM, August 21, 2008. I couldn't have said it better myself!

Dream on Hippy Mom.

All the skeletons are starting to fall out of his closet right now.

He cannot come up with a valid birth certificate, and this will not die till he produces a Valid Birth Certificate.

Then you have the Larry Sinclair fiasco.

His flip flopping on almost every subject is too much for a smart person to accept.

I wouldnt hold ny breath for an Obama win.

I personally believe that Hillary will be the VP pick. I think that's the reason he's giving her (and her entire family!) so much time on the convention schedule!

Even CNN, FoxNews, ABC, David Gergen and for goodness sake, Ralph Nader, are now practically hitting Obama over the head trying to tell him he will win if he puts Clinton on the ticket. At 5 a.m. this morning that was all CNN was talking about.

I think it's clear he's going to need her to win - though Paul Begala explained that Hillary no longer needs Obama.... I think he'd be lucky if she would say yes.

This election was his to lose - and things aren't looking good.

Obama's primary campaign and "presumptive win" turned me into an independent" from virtually a yellow dog democrat. I always said I would not vote for him if Sen. Clinton was not on the ticket - and that remains true.

John Kennedy knew he needed Lyndon Johnson to win. He didn't care for him, nor did Johnson particularly care for Kennedy. But the team - won.

If Obama can't get past his personal preference for "chemistry" - then he deserves to lose. Common sense is at a premium these days -- surely.

Sen. Obama probably got an "abusive driver fee" ticket and Kaine had to explain to him why he backed it. Not tax and pain Kaine, pick a dog or something, dogs have personality.

I pray Obama does not pick Hillary.
I do not want him to win.
Without her--Obama will lose.

And if he doesn't choose her it will be the final nail in his coffin.

Obama's mask is slipping everyday and voters finally see what kind of person he is.

who the hell is Kaine? com'on.

Posted by: Adam | Aug 21, 2008 11:49:36 AM

I'm a Republican who pretends to be Democrat who has just changed his vote. I have nothing else to talk about because my candidate, McCain, has nothing to offer for America.

After Kaine’s transportation bill fiasco and as a Virginian, I will not vote for any office he wishes to up hold, Even if that means not voting for Obama.

No one could help Obama,

Jake
You should do a post on why Obama is hiding his past by stopping all his records from being opened. since Obama is saying it shows his supposed experience!!

Oh thats right it shows his connection to Ayers, who under Obama as Senator received tax payer money!!
