Yes We Kaine?

August 21, 2008 11:03 AM

For 15 minutes this morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, met privately with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and Kaine's staff at the Omni Hotel in Richmond.

At 10:05 am ET, the two Democrats descended a staircase and shook hands with about 100 fans gathered in the atrium.

After the meeting, a reporter asked Gov. Kaine if Sen. Obama asked him to be his running mate. Kaine's response was the standard line he’s given all week: "I'm going to let the campaign speak for the campaign."

When asked what he and Sen. Obama talked about this morning Kaine said, "He visited with my staff just to basically say hi to them and thank them for all their hard work."

The two men are currently holding an event in Chester, Virginia, at John Tyler Community College.

Tyler was the last Vice President to hail from Virginia. After President William Henry Harrison died from an illness, Tyler became president, nicknamed "His Accidency."

UPDATE: From ABC News' Jennifer Duck: Sen. Obama spent most of his morning with one of the rumored vice presidential contenders Gov. Tim Kaine and the two appeared on stage together for over an hour at an event in Chester, Virginia.

Compliments between the two leaders were exchanged publicly at the event, however there was no mention of the vice presidency.

Kaine spent a majority of his five minute introduction praising Obama and attacking Republican rival Sen. John McCain.

“One of the things that makes me laugh the most is people who say a vote for senator might be risky—well, let me tell you what risk is,” Kaine said to the small crowd.  “When the economy is the front and center thing that all Americans are so concerned about right now, to put somebody in the White House that says ‘I don’t know much about economy,’ that is risky folks.  That’s what Sen McCain said and that’s risky.”

The Virginia Governor also tagged Sen McCain to President Bush saying the two are in “lockstep" and McCain would make the same choices as the president if he could do it all over again.

As Sen. Obama stumped to make the red state turn blue, Kaine sat to the side on a stool listening.  Sen. Obama also criticized Sen. McCain on Iraq, the economy, and McCain’s inability to understand middle class Americans.

The best choice is HILLARY!

Posted by: Karen | Aug 21, 2008 2:56:50 PM

I TOTALLY AGREE, EXCEPT, THAT I THINK HILLARY SHOULD BE THE NOMINEE!!!!

Obama is losing now and will continue to lose if he picks either Biden or Kaine. The ONLY logical choice would be Hillary. I don't see this happening, and I'm getting used to saying, "President John McCain!".

Doesnt' matter who Obama picks Obama is done for.

The best choice is HILLARY!

And the results are now showing up in the polls: not only are some key states like Ohio breaking toward McCain but the Reuters/Zogby poll today showed McCain opening up a 5-point national lead — and stunningly, voters said in that survey that he would be better handling the economy than Obama! That is the bread and butter issue for the Democrats, one they should be able to seize upon to capture seats up and down the ticket.

Lisa Again... Having blindly supported the worst president EVER, TWICE, those on the right shouldn't exactly claim to be experts on gray matter... I'm just sayin'.

That's what makes this country gray.

Lovinggrandma53, Kaine was an ambulance chaser attorney like Edwards. I live in VA, and he is NOT popular right now because on his stand with taxes. I think Obama is making a huge mistake by not making Hillary the VP. The DNC can't stand her, but she DID get 18 million votes. I would think that would be a slam dunk. But, as always, the democras pick dull high tax Kaine or Biden. Biden would be a Republicans' dream. They can use Biden's criticism of Obama on a dialy basis! He sticks his foot in his mouth all the time! I think the democrats made a huge mistake in the primaries for not nominating Bill Richardson, he has the most experience of anyone in the party. Go figure, the dems have YET to figure out why they keep losing elections.

If Obama picks Kaine, its a sure win for John McCain.

So many comments, so little gray matter from the left.

"...but I would say - assuming Kaine is popular in Va. - that picking him is crucial to winning.."

==============================
Ah yes, but that's the big "IF". He's NOT all that popular here. He has managed to wipe out the surplus that Mark Warner (see photo under dictionary entry for "popular in Va" ) left us. He has gotten NOWHERE in pushing a transportation solution (critical to the Northern Virginia voters who put him in office in the first place) through the State Legislature.

On the other hand, maybe if a VP slot would save us from another year with him as governor.....

No you can't
With all the unfair press and media support for Obama, his campaign spending at least 3-1 on advertising, a “World Tour” with photo opts, huge crowds, superstar treatment, Obama should be trouncing John McCain by now. So why isn’t he?
Might the answer be that John McCain out shines Barack Obama as commander-in-chief? The Saddleback Faith forum clearly showed the difference. McCain can talk and think and answer the questions. Obama stutters, ponders like he has never heard any of these topics and wants to debate them publically. Just look at the questions at the last forum.
Of all of the people in the world whom would you consult as President for wisdom or advice, Obama said his wife and then his grand-mother, in that order (what)! Or how about the question when does a baby becomes a person. McCain stated at “conception”. Obama said that this answer was above “my pay grade” (what)! The public can sense a “real and definite” problem with Obama at the helm. He is too young and inexperienced to hold such an important office. Point being on vacation in Hawaii he held a “press conference” and read what one of his advisors wrote concerning what was happening in Georgia (Russian take-over).
Obama’s statement, “I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict.” “Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint and to avoid an escalation to full-scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected.” (what)! Georgia should show restraint when attacked by Russia. And, Obama goes back to his vacation---opportunity missed to show the American people that you mean what you say. Leave the family to enjoy Hawaii and fly back to see what you do to prevent further violence.
John McCain’s statement: “The news reports indicate that Russian military forces crossed an internationally recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. The government of Georgia has called for a ceasefire and for a resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should immediately work with the EU and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course that it has chosen.”
My reason for Obama’s failure is easier. On August 20th in North Carolina, at a town meeting, the last question came from a homeless veteran that was living in a shelter with other veterans. Obama gave his campaign speech “a stump substantive answer” to fix the problems. The homeless veteran can only wonder if the man deemed to be President will fix anything, for at every stop he promises to fix everything.

Obama has “no passion”. If he in fact believed what he was saying that it was so outrageous, disgraceful and dishonorable for the veterans to be treated in this manner he would have said ------ let’s drive over to the shelter, meet the veterans. We can talk with the people that are giving their services and see if they can suggest something that we can do to help. He could have taken the opportunity to fix or assist in an issue that he called “his passion”. He had time. From the town meeting he went to the Farmer’s market to have another “photo shot” to buy a few peaches from a common citizen.

It's not Yes We Kaine, it's Yes We McCain.

Posted by: young_voter | Aug 21, 2008 2:32:59 PM

Tim Kaine could be a good choice. Born in St Paul Minn, eldest of 3 boys, grad from Jesuit High School and University of Missouri, took year off of Harvard Law to work as a Christian Missionary and lived in Honduras teaching welding and carpentry to teenagers, finished Harvard Law, met wife, got married, 17 years handled a range of civil rights cases, entered politics in 1994, acted as a bridge builder between the council members of the divided Richmond City Council, 2 year council-selected Mayor of Richmond, was a Virginia Lieutenant Governor, than elected as Governor, has three children. Information obtained from AP, news wire, Daily press, Newport news Virginia, Kansas City Star. Not a bad choice.

Michael R - my impression is similar, but I think Obama came off like Ned Flanders the ernest acolyte, where McCian seems more like Mr. Burns enticing the crowd with fresh meat.

Posted by: Flash Override | Aug 21, 2008 2:27:50 PM

If Mccain is a risky choice on economy because he once said " don't know much about the economy," has Obama ever run a big business? or Did Obama major in economics? or Obama like McCain just rely on economic advisers? It seem to be the same. There is no difference.
