You Knew a Quote Like This Was Bound to Surface
August 09, 2008 9:42 PM
"I think this President has shown a remarkable disrespect for his office, for the moral dimensions of leadership, for his friends, for his wife, for his precious daughter. It is breathtaking to me the level to which that disrespect has risen."
-- John Edwards on Bill Clinton, February 1999.
(Hat tip, Andrew.)

This is no more our business than was Clinton's affair. The problem starts when we decide to publicly cast judgment. (As demonstrated by Edward's quote condemning Clinton.) It is none of our business. Move on, nothing to see here. If we keep our own house in order we'll be busy enough.

Len,
For one, there's a lot less of a percentage of female politicians. Male politicians, as handsome Edwards, have a following of 'groupies' as does Obama. These male politicians are a challenge to obtain. Somehow I can't visualize male groupies to a female politician. Women are inately nurturers and monogamous. Men have this primal instinct to go forth and populate the earth. Interesting question.

One would even venture to guess that EXCEPT under blackmail conditions, Edwards wouldn't have permitted such a salacious nomme-de-payout for the campaign ... groupie, or whatever she was.
This whole story REEKS of "well, THAT ain't what happened".

@saysitso: Or there is a difference in the age at which such temptations become irresistable and another age when they are willing to use it for political gain.
Look at Lewinsky. She was outed by an older female not a man. Values shift with opportunities given a person with shifting values. Perhaps for ambitious women, the time to cheat is when the goods are worth something to the nest, and the time to be faithful is when the nest is paramount.
Sovereignty and territory: women treat men like houses. Men treat women like kitchen appliances.
Your turn.

Sure McCain's adulterous affair with Cindy happened decades ago, but why aren't we also focusing on him if he dares to talk about "morality". No wonder he had nothing to say since it will bring up his own shameful act of dumping his wife and carrying on the liaison with Cindy! Was John thinking of his wife and kids then? Isn't John our friend just as hypocritical??

It takes two, Belle. I've got to get to choir. I'm interested in seeing if there can even be a discussion of those questions. The panelists copped out fast when Jake asked. That means there is definitely a political dimension to them.

Len,
Women are the stronger sex, i.e. Elizabeth Edwards, Hillary Clinton. Standing by their men takes strong women. Strong to withstand the public scrutiny, judgement and pity. Elizabeth and Hillary could do it on their own, stand on their own two feet, they're able to financially and because of their intelligence and education. They 'chose' not to. They take the harder path. I highly respect them both.

"The latter sounds more plausible."

The One couldn't personally cop to prior knowledge about Hunter/Druck, obviously. The UNlikeliest thing is that a person like Hunter -- sociologically speaking -- would just happen to show up on Park Ave to seduce Edwards.
NY Post:
"Hunter - who had no prior video or production experience - incorporated her company, Midline Groove Productions, just five days before the committee cut her first check."

I liked the question in the Roundtable this morning. Why does this kind of scandal never erupt for female politicians? None of the panelists answered.
That's curious. Are women better at hiding it? Is it never investigated on considered off-limits? Does it never happen? Do men seldom out their mistresses and women politicians get the benefit of that reticence whereas women often go after the man when the affair is over?

Ego and narcissism will eventually destroy "The One".
Obama already thinks his actions have no consequences.

Belle Star,
This was my statement: "Obama's campaign has known about Edward's indiscretion, not sure of the timing of when, but they did." Most mainstream media knew of it last year but kept it quiet, guess Obama campaign just found out as we all did?? Or maybe they knew last year, asked for Edward's endorsement, got it while the public was not in the know. The latter sounds more plausible.

A lot of Clinton supporters cannot comprehend how this is different than the Clinton experience. Many people forget creepy Bill was in law suit centered around him exposing himself to an unwilling participant and he lied under oath. The difference is absuing women and lying under oath.

That quote fits Clinton, Edwards, McCain, Gingrich, but most of all Bush.

Their long-standing reticence may well be about avoiding that sudden-death-at-50 thing that infected Bernie Mac upon his becoming an embarrasment to The CHANGEling.
Can it POSSIBLY be a coincidence that the "Democrats", who previously wouldn't shut up about "gay" this and that, have now struck the word from the platform?

"Obama's campaign has known about Edward's indiscretion"

Who sent Ms. Druck to seduce Edwards, ANYway -- the Obama campaign? That's not a bad assumption.

The problem here is not Edwards cheating, but that he yells, screams, preaches, demanding everyone to be moral.
The problem here is not that Obama is a VIP notable member of Trinity Church, but that he yells, screams, preaches, demanding everyone to be moral.

Obama's campaign has known about Edward's indiscretion, not sure of the timing of when, but they did. Why did they have Edward's confess on mainstream media on a Friday night at 11:30 p.m. before Obama's being on vacation for a week? Possibly so it'd be all forgotten when he returns and hence he can distance himself from someone who was on his 'shortlist'. Obama is a lawyer, Edward's is a lawyer and both superior to us or they like to think so.

Why are you trying to drag Obama into this? If we're going to play that game, what does Bill Clinton think!
Why don't you save your anti Obama comments for a story that's about him? You've clearly got a case of Obama envy!
