Bipartisan Media-Bashing: Biden, Rudy, Slam Press for Bristol Palin Inquiries

September 02, 2008 4:21 PM

“I have a simple proposition: children are off limits," Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del, said when asked about Bristol Palin's pregnancy. “Children are off limits."

This was greeted with thunderous applause at the Florida retirement home where Biden was speaking.

"And as my mom would say, we should treat each other -- and in this case we’ve all been through things with our children -- and it’s about common decency. Just treat people with common decency. That’s all I know that I can say."

In this sentiment -- stated by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, yesterday -- Biden was joined by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

As he exited a breakfast held for the New Hampshire and South Carolina Republican delegations, Giuliani was asked if he thought Bristol Palin’s pregnancy would detract from the GOP convention.

"Frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself, asking that question," said the former mayor. "This is a personal issue that the family is handling in the most appropriate way that it can be handled…other American families have had to handle this. They’re handling it in the most appropriate way possible. It doesn’t have the slightest—the slightest—relationship to a presidential campaign.

“And we’d be a better country if this was a thing where there was sort of an internal mechanism where journalists, and the journalistic community said, ‘Well, these are the things that we don’t give a lot of emphasis to,'" said the mayor, whose own personal travails have long made tabloid fodder.

I agree the media area acting like paparrazi not journalist. This is a young woman age 17. Can you imagine what she feels like? Leave it alone and move on.

The media should be ashamed of themselves for doing what they have done to a 17 year old girl! We all have daughters so put yourself in her shoes and her parents' shoes and maybe you can feel a littl empathy! If you don't, then there is no hope for you!

It's funny that the Democrat battle-cry for the past few months has been that we need a change from career politicians, we need to fight corruption, we need to elect people who can get the job done ... yet, when someone comes along who is not a career politician, who has fought corruption, who has brought about change, the media is quick to try to discredit her with labels like "bad mother," a right-wing extremist, "inexperienced."

Sure you do peach as long as its the Republican who's family is involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that families should be off limits. So let's focus on the candidates, shall we?

Joe Biden has told people multiple times that a drunk driver killed his wife and infant daughter. He lied. The man was never charged and the chief of police said the man wasn't drinking.

What was her mother thinking??? That no one would find out??? How dumb is that, you know when you enter the race the media will check every corner of your life, thats just reality. How stupid to put your daughter into that situation all for your own ego trip.....

Obama’s mother was pro-life. She was unmarried when Barack was conceived.

Wha, wha, wha righties... toughen up, quit 'yer bellyaching and whining. The old "the press is biased against us" riff is getting REALLY old, and well, uh, quite lame.

Don't blame the press and the other side when your campaign starts teetering on the brink of being a train-wreck of their own making.

It is idiotic to think that Obama can say kumbaya and the bloggers will stop discussing about his choice of Sarah Palin. These people have spent their time and money defending Obama for the past two years from the Republicans. Now, I ask of you, where was Senator Mccain when Obama was bombarded by Reverend Wright issues on fox and other MSM? Where was Senator Mccain when Obama was wrongly being accused of being a muslim? Where was Senator Mccain when the Tenessee GOP's and other Republicans were attacking Michelle Obama. She was wrongly accused of being a white-hater and some people even called her the bitter half of Obama. Remember Obama's babymomma? That was an attack on both the mother and the kids? Remember the terrorist fist bump? Where was Senator Mccain when Obama was being smeared by the Ayers and Rezko scandals. Instead Senator Mccain capitalised on it. Where was Senator Mccain when Jerome Corsi wrote that scam of a book? Mccain said sometimes you have to have a sense of humor. Well, we are having our own sense of humor. In Sarah Palin, we have found an opposite on Ayers,Wright,Rezko e.t.c. I can see the republicans have changed their speeches about Senator Obama. They planned on linking Obama to Ayers etc. They even had a film that they plan on showing. The hype of Barack Obama. Well, we are watching. Today is gone, we will be looking at tomorrow. Any false attack will surely have a reprisal.

obama said families are off limits, and now today they are saying he is being sexist against palin

cmon mccain whos going to believe that?

Waching the press to rush into Palin story make me wonder is there any independent journalist left in this country. This is the press corp, who miss the Rev. Wright story, this the the press who hide Edward story. In less then 5 days, the press have dig into Palin life more then Obama and Edward combine.
I am not going to vote for McCain since his choice lean too much to the right wing, but the press corp make ordinary people like me so outrage.

All democrats agree with that. She seems very upset, nervous and such a sweet girl in such an awful position her mother exploited. Shame Sarah Palin.

This woman is CRAZY, and her pastor is waaaaaaaaaaaay worse than Rev. Wright "What you see in a terrorist -- that's called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what's going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. ... We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. ... Jesus called us to die. You're worried about getting hurt? He's called us to die. Listen, you know we can't even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. ... I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode." Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he's like the good shepherd, he's loving all the time and he's kind all the time. Oh yes he is -- but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war."

Isn't that the same thing the suicide bombers are saying? We need to be willing to DIE for religious reasons?

geevil, you have been on here a long time. You and I both know that the media will not go after Obama on ANYTHING. When they pretend to, it's accompanied with a defense and explanation.

Posted by: irma | Sep 2, 2008 4:42:13 PM

Both Obama and Biden say children of candidates are off limits and I agree. Maybe they should control their supporters and paid bloggers more. It is just more words. It shows they are not in control.
Obama can run his mouth, Palin can run the largest state in the union.

Posted by: Mary | Sep 2, 2008 4:42:04 PM

This we can agree on.

Posted by: len | Sep 2, 2008 4:40:32 PM

It is interesting that the media decided NOT to go after Edwards (I agree with them) on his affair and BABY while he WAS a candidate, however it's fair to go after the KID? So we are left as citizens to make decisions based on the medias bias and double standards. The media is blatantly running this campaign. First of all, although the kid made a mistake, Palin is sticking to her "values" by supporting her daughter in having the baby. No contradictions there. The focus should not be on her daughter at all it should be on the ISSUES, something the Obama camp has had problems with in the past. Focus on the person rather than issues and you get a BACKLASH because a persons image, as we witnessed with Hillary, can be distorted, especially if the media is doing the dirty work for you.

It will fall on deaf ears.

Posted by: Mack | Sep 2, 2008 4:39:10 PM

I concur.

Posted by: Ben Straub | Sep 2, 2008 4:38:13 PM

Darn. Does that mean we can't ask about the Biden boys. A prominent lobbyist Obama steered money to and the Delaware AG who issued an arrest warrant for Larry Sinclair.
