Chris Rock on Alcee Hastings on Sarah Palin

September 26, 2008 3:53 PM

Comedian Chris Rock was asked to weigh in on some odd comments by Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., about Gov. Sarah Palin.

As ABC News' Teddy Davis reported earlier this week, Hastings told voters on Wednesday that "if Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention. Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through."

Hastings spokesman David Goldenberg told ABC News that he was trying to argue that Palin is an "extremely conservative woman who is out of touch with mainstream America."

On CNN's "Larry King Live," Rock was asked about the comments.

KING: Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida, I knew a long time ago when I lived there, who is both black and a Democrat, is warning against Palin because he says, quote, anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. That a little rough?

ROCK: Who is this guy?

KING: Alcee Hastings.

ROCK: I never heard of him.

KING: He was a judge. He was indicted.

ROCK: Don't compare me to a moose.

KING: No. He was not --

ROCK: Are you calling me a moose?

KING: No, I'm not calling you a moose. That's what he said.

ROCK: Who is this guy?

KING: He's a congressman.

ROCK: Are you making news or reporting the news? Let's find the craziest black quote we can find --

KING: OK.

ROCK: And just --

KING: What he is trying to say is that a woman who --

ROCK: Who compares -- what the hell do I have to do with a moose, Larry?

KING: No, no, he says that any woman who totes guns and strips moose, that's her --

ROCK: Right.

KING: Can't care too much about Jews and blacks.

ROCK: Larry, what the hell does this have to do -- mooses or moose. I don't know.

KING: Mooses?

ROCK: I don't know. I didn't go to a fancy school, man. But -- yes. She does kill moose. She does kill them.

KING: Yes.

ROCK: Yes, I know.

KING: Do you know anybody in your community who kills moose? That's the point.

ROCK: Every time I see her with a dead moose, I'm like, why is Michael Vick in jail? Isn't killing animals bad?

KING: You have a point.

Give some men a little power and they have to see how much they can get buy with. He is ma greedy man, beware of this man....

"Disgraceful - Hastings should resign immediately. If someone on the Republican side had made the same comment it would be 'off with their head'"Posted by: L.C. Moore

LC,
You probably need to be paying more attention to the news, because Representative Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia referred to Obama as "uppity" last month. When pressed that he meant to say that word he said "Uppity, yeah." In other words, "yeah I said it."

I don't know how old you are, but the uppity hasn't been common parlance for like 40 years. And when it was used it usually accompanied a racial slur known as the "N-word". So, there have been comments on the other side of the aisle that were racially charged, and you know what? Westmoreland didn't resign from Congress or get the can.

Is it still possible at this late stage of the 21st century that some stupid white people can't imagine that black people can be racist too?

i must thank you for helping me to make a final decision: i'm voting mccain / palin this year.

your comment made me realize that, as the pendulum swings back, it's not just many average black americans around me who are racist and hostile to white Americans, but even politicians like you who have been voted into a high office by a group of Americans (neither blacks, asians, nor whites, gays, like me, nor straights, christians, jews, or muslims. just American).

i had truly thought we could've voted for sen. obama -- that we were just about to get beyond sexism, racism, etc., and just all be Americans. but you've proven to me: we're not quite ready to have a black president. like the o j simpson jury and, more recently, rev. wright, i realize from your stark comment that some people just aren't (yet) open-minded but still truly prejudiced and hateful. we can't have that in our white house. we need an American who is for Americans. period.

i hope that you can grow and that we can one day just think about who'd be the best candidate -- not about his/her race, sexual-preference, sex or religion.

Alcee Hastings has been a Representative since 1993 and a Democrat. He was a judge of the circuit court of Broward County, Florida and of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida (1979 to 1989).

Hastings was impeached and removed from office for corruption and perjury. He is only the sixth federal judge to be impeached and removed from office in American history.

But Pelosi LOVES this man. The Democrats have MORALS!!! lmao

I love these people who attempt to credit Palin as a great leader because of her high approval ratings in Alaska. Have you ever LIVED in Alaska? It doesn't take much to impress the people of that state. They're a bunch of bigoted(many come from the south via the military)boozers and losers - frontier wannabes. Spend some time up there my friends if you want to know what the dumbing down of America really is all about.

of course he was avoiding the question. Chris Rock has the political expertise of a flea. His extertise is comedy, and he clearly had brains to identify between the two, and deflected these nonsense questions. Comedian, yes. Politician, no. Chris has figured that out, im sure Larry should have done the same before bringing up irrrelevant questions to a person with no relevance in the matter.

Good job Chris. You saw through the ploy and came out fine. Ignore these people trying to score some racial or political underscore from these comments. What happened to Larry discusing issues relevant to the guest? Thats what i want to know....

I love these people that have never been closer to nature than that one trip to the rim of the Grand Canyon, and the only thing they have ever hunted for is a perfect pair of pumps at a Bloomingdale sale, suddenly deciding they are expert enough to lecture the Govenor of ALASKA on proper wildlife mangement. Hard to imagine how she was able to maintain an 85% approval rating (that's only about 75% higher than Nancy Pelosi) Rest assured, your opinions will be given all the consideration they deserve.
Reprting news or making news? Right on Chris!

Geez, Can't you all see that C. ROCK was trying to avoid adding negative discussion to an already volitile situation.

If the people that commented on ROCK badly didn't see that then then need to take literature classes on drama.

It's clear that the man is avoiding King's questioning with deflection and humor. You aristocrats make me wanna regurgitate my lunch.

King's question was stupid - he's just trying to get a rise out of Chris Rock and hopefully have him say something inflammatory that is anti-Palin.

I don't support her world view - period, end of story. We don't need to make fun of her.

Chris Rock is a brilliant comedian who is rightfully proud of Obama's candidacy - period, end of story.

Chris Rock is smart, but maybe too smart for some people. The point being in both cases the animal is ultimately dead. Doesn't matter what the intention of the murderer is... If you killed me for food, or just cause I'm a minority and you felt I was disposable so you did it for sport, or if you killed me so you could harvest my organs for a dying loved one... it wouldn't matter to me why you killed me. I'd just be dead. I think both the moose and the dog just were trying to live life. So it's OK to kill animals for food, which she can easily purchase at the store - which supports the economy, b.t.w., or she has the pleasure of killing her own food. Awesome. In the end, both animals are needlessly dead.

Palin met with world leaders at the U.N
Thier first impression?.
Oh what a cute kitty!,can I hold it!I just want to hug it!
Sarah Palin.."I'm so so pretty...Oh so pretty..."

Isn't it amazing that within two weeks of Sarah Palin being put on the ticket we knew everything about her personal, professional and political life including every detail of her husband and children. Yet, in the two years that the Dali-Bama has been running for president, the MSM has done essentially nothing but cover up Obama's past.

Why have we heard nothing about Obama's relationship with William Ayers, terrorist? Why have we heard nothing about Obama's relationship with Frank Marshall Davis, communist? Why have we heard nothing about Obama's relationship with ACORN, a radical leftist group that has been indicted for registering illegible voters (illegal aliens) voter fraud in 12 states? Why don't we have full disclosure on Obama's relationship with Rev. Wright, anti-American anti-white black liberation theologist? Why don't we have full disclosure on Father Pfleager, radical leftist priest? Why don't we have full disclosure on Tony Rezko, money launderer and convicted felon?

Chris has it right. Reporting news or making news?

Hate to go ad hominem, but I never watch this moron -- he's simply too ugly. Look...it makes sense: Some people are very attractive (e.g., Sarah Palin, our next V.P.); and some people are opposite. Neither asked to be born that way; but both have to play the cards they're dealt. In king's case: 3, 8, Jack, Queen! 2 (rainbow). Sarah Palin: Royal flush in hearts. Why the post? The "Moose" caption caught my attention. Rock...I never heard of, but he should learn to talk in some semblence of a sentence.

Posted by: stranger in the night | Sep 27, 2008 5:06:38 AM

I'm not sure if this was Rock's point, but I can see irritation on this. Hastings said something stupid and Chris Rock is expected to have an opinion on this I guess, but why?Because they both support Obama? Because they're both black? There's bound to be plenty of white supporters for McCain who say stupid stuff, would I have to explain or answer for them? (As a white McCain voter) Why? Oh and I like "Everybody Hates Chris."

Posted by: Thomas R | Sep 27, 2008 3:07:40 AM

That was the dumbest interview I ever heard. People pay money to hear this guy 'entertain'? What makes King think that people want to hear Rock's view on anything? He is insulting his audience.

Posted by: Mad Jayhawk | Sep 27, 2008 12:44:48 AM

Anyone who eats beef or chicken or pork or fish, etc. is a hypocrite for having a problem with Sarah Palin shooting moose. Who are these people who think eating animals is cruel? Ever watch National Geographic????? They imagine a happy world like a disney movie where animals play all day until the mean, evil humans come along and shoot them. Please.
