Closing Song
September 04, 2008 11:16 PM
The song playing right now, accompanying Gov. Sarah Palin's entrance on stage, is "Barracuda" by Heart, a 1977 classic.
A nod to her high school basketball nickname, Sarah Barracuda.
"If the real thing don’t do the trick/No, you better make up something quick/You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick/Ooooooohhhh, barra barracuda."

What about McCain's association with Liddy??? A man who supported and willingly broke the law for one of the the most corrupt governments in US history! Oh, I'm sorry...leave Liddy alone...he served his time. SO DID AYERS!!!

If either "party" (no pun intended) where really telling the truth they might have selected something like Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression".

Brooklyn Democrat, we are talking about two different things. And I will move on WHEN Sen. Obama responds!
ONE, Sen. Obama DID HAVE a very strong relationship with a known communist--in fact a recruiter of the Communist Party USA, for 5 years. Frank Marshall Davis was a mentor and a near father-figure. This was a life changing experience that Sen. Obama writes about. This is NOT just an association.
The American people have a right to know if their next president has ever been or is a member of the CPUSA. Sen. Obama has yet to deny this, or even throw the late Frank Marshall Davis under the bus like he did the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.
TWO, a completely separate issue is William Ayers. An issue arose about William Ayers, and I responded. Then Willem Van Oranje asked me a question and I answered it. Yes, Sen. Obama and William Ayers do have an association. I don't know how deep that goes. But my point was that William Ayers is still a radical and is preaching his radical views to his college students; and has been indoctrinating teachers and young children through his books and education methods for years.
Now then, if you really listen to Sen. Obama's rhetoric closely, he does promote some of the principles of, at best, Socialism. He supports wealth redistribution. He promotes class warfare. He demonizes Corporate America. He advocates doing away with the "your-on-your-on" society. Actually he eludes to that as an "ownership society," so one can infer that Sen. Obama might actually lean towards doing away with some forms of ownership. Taken together, that IS socialism.

Willem writes, "Ayer's professional career is in Early Childhood Education; has edited and written books and articles on education theory; and appeared on panels and symposia."
Indeed. Ayers believes in Revolution Through Education, a message he took to his compatriot Chavez in Venezuela. Obama shares his views which is what the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which Obama chaired and Ayers ran, was all about.
Think this is nothing? Why were the files from the Challenge sealed until they were recently forced to open them?
More to come.

Last night at the convention I found it interesting that the Republicans played Barracuda performed by Heart, a band who relocated to Canada, in the mid 1970’s to avoid the draft of their guitarist. I thought McCain was in favor of a draft. Another oversight by a party who does not look at the past to learn something...anything.

It's easy to see what Obama saw in Ayers - at the very least, he was a rung up the ladder of Chicago politics. But ask yourself - what does Ayers see in Obama that's so appealing to him?
Posted by: marylou | Sep 5, 2008 12:06:08 PM
Seriously? You sheep are still bleeting out about Ayers, Rezco, et al? Is that all you've got?
Tell you what, let's go digging through "the patriot's" closet and see who he's connected to. Remember the Keating 5? Remember the 20+ lobbyists in has camaign and aboard the "straight talk express"? How about good ol' Phil Gramm and his wife, the architects and implementors of the "Enron Loophole" and the current credit crisis that has played a large part in wrecking the US economy.
So which one are you people? Pot or Kettle?

Keep pushing the "8-year-old" denial mantra. The truth about the full scope of the Obama-Ayers relationship in adulthood will come out before Election Day.
Posted by: marylou | Sep 5, 2008 12:03:31 PM
James -
You need to move on. Suggesting that Obama is somehow tainted by something that Ayers did when Obama was eight or nine years old is absurd. Taking your premise to its logical conclusion means that anyone who has come into contact with Ayers during his work with Chicago's political, cultural, community and educational organizations is some kind of radical terrorist sympathizer. That's absurd on its face.
Guilt by association cuts both ways here. I'm more concerned about the unsavory ex-lobbyists who are running the McCain campaign. While McCain was sabre rattling over Georgia, his chief spokesman on the subject was a former lobbyist for the government of Georgia which paid him $800,000 for his efforts. Other members of McCain's staff have been paid to represent some of the world's most repulsive and brutal dictators.
These "associations" seem to me to represent a more clear and present danger than the stuff you've been obsessing about.
Posted by: Brooklyn Democrat | Sep 5, 2008 11:51:37 AM
When I heard that song start playing it was like WTH?? How odd they would want people to make that assessment of her. I love that McCain says his presidency would be transparent. He won't even allow the woman who may become President if he keels over answer questions for the press.
Americans will not vote for him in November if it looks like he has something to hide and it looks like he has something to hide. A friend of Sarah Palin described her thusly "She isn't too bright, but she's not on the take." Wow, that is a glowing endorsement.
Posted by: NOT TO BRIGHT | Sep 5, 2008 11:50:00 AM
Brooklyn Democrat, there are troubling facts in Sen. Obama's life that he refuses to bring to light: Sen. Obama WAS mentored by Frank Marshall Davis for five years while growing up in Hawaii; Mr. Davis WAS almost a father-figure to Sen. Obama; and Frank Marshall Davis WAS a communist. Do the math!
Posted by: James Danley | Sep 5, 2008 11:29:18 AM
Willem van Oranje, becoming a Distinguished Professor has nothing to do with the content of one's message. William Ayers has never repented for his bombings. To the contrary, he actually stated that he wished he could have done more. This is a man that is deeply rooted in an anti-America and anti-capitalism philosophy. Do you honestly believe that he would not teach his own philosophy?
You hit it right on the nail when you said that Ayer's professional career is in Early Childhood Education. But you really don't find it the least bit troubling that he is indoctrinating the young children of America with his radical views?
Posted by: James Danley | Sep 5, 2008 11:16:24 AM
No matter what your political leanings, you have to admit Palin must've kicked butt at basketball!!
Thankfully, she takes that attitude off the court as well!

When is Obama going to be vetted by the MSM?
They need to dig into his relationship with Ayers/Annenberg Papers and ask him why Obama said "he's just a guy in his neighborhood".
They need to ask about the millions of dollars funneled to Ayers.
They need to ask why he tried to hide his radical abortion record for 4 years.
And why he denied voting for gun bans?
And why he tried to hide his relationship with communist Frank Davis?
Decent Americans care about fairness--the media has shown how far they will go to get Obama elected.
Posted by: riley | Sep 5, 2008 11:00:39 AM
jock59801, this has nothing to do with McCarthy. The facts are that Sen. Obama was mentored for five years by a communist agitator and recruiter. And then he studied under the principles of Saul Alinsky, another communist. If it looks like a duck, smells like a duck and quacks like a duck...the American people need to know!

James Danley: "William Ayers preaches the same radical anti-America, anti-capitalism dogma from his position as a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago."
Oh, and you know this how? Somebody who knows a neighbors' daughter was taught by Ayers and she's a lefty too?
Ayers's professional career is in Early Childhood Education; has edited and written books and articles on education theory; and appeared on many panels and symposia.
He currently is Distinguished Professor. You don't become Distinguished Professor without having earned that merit in your profession. It's an honorary title for people who are recognized by colleagues throughout the world as leaders in their particular fields.

Owen Jacob wrote: "It would amaze you to findout that Bill Ayers has done a lot to uplift the down-trodden in the State of Chicago than all the Politicians put together."
The problem is more than William Ayers' Weather Underground bombings from 40 years ago. William Ayers preaches the same radical anti-America, anti-capitalism dogma from his position as a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago. And Chicago Mayor Daley employed him as a teachers trainer for the public schools in Chicago. He indoctrinates the teachers who are in turn expected to influence their students with Ayer's radical views.

Michael Hall, you wrote: "Obama has been asked every question imaginable..." And: "Every aspect of Obama has been scrutinized about as much as humanly possible for the past two years minimum on a daily basis."
Not true! I have yet to hear any reporter ask Sen. Obama whether his 5-year mentor (1975-1979) Frank Marshall Davis--a Communist Party USA agitator and recruiter--ever recruited him to be a member of the CPUSA. And was Barack Obama ever a secret member of the CPUSA.
How can an individual be mentored by a communist for 5 years; study under the principals of Saul Alinsky, another communist; be mentored by the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. for 20 years, a Black Liberation theologist; and associate with other individuals who espouse anti-America and anti-capitalist views over the years; and NOT have some of these same beliefs?

The people who so ardently support Palin are fools. Apart from the good people from Alaska, no one knows her. You have republican hype on one side, a lot of speculation on the other, and buried somewhere in ANWAR is the truth.
Luckily for me, all I need to know about her is that she believes creationism (intel. design) is valid science, is anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-sex education, pro-jihad (remember she thinks god ordained this war), doesn't believe humans play any part in global warming, is pro-oil dependency, graduated with a ba in journalism (after attending 6 schools in 6 years), has to cite her proximity to Russia as foreign experience, has already been caught in several bold faced lies, will not interview with the press (at least not until her brain training is done), she is under investigation for abuse of power, and she and her husband both have ties to a secessionist group in Alaska. These are things that have all been verified, and total result = lunatic. Paired with unstable McCain the gambler, she spells disaster for the nation.

Woody,
I won't mention Pat Robertson if you don't mention Ludacris.
Posted by: Leonard Peltier | Sep 5, 2008 9:23:41 AM
Who cares about the music, honestly? You want to talk about music, then fair is fair. Let's talk about the Ludacris lyrics:
"Paint the White House black and I'm sure that's got 'em terrified
McCain don't belong in any chair unless he's paralyzed"
Charming. Yeah, I know Obama "denounced" the song. Let's not forget before the song was released Obama was on record saying he was a Ludacris fan. What do you think he really thinks about it behind closed doors? Speaking of denoucing ...
jmc663 says:
"THAT is the exact problem the Repubs have with Ayers. He is educated the poor and disadvantaged."
Are you serious? The problem that any American, ANY American should have with Ayers is that he is an UNREPENTANT terrorist. UNREPENTANT! To this day he still believes in his cause, still believes they didn't bomb enough, would still do it all over again and then some. What does it matter if Obama denounces Ayers' America-hating attempts at murdering the innocent? Ayers himself does not! Would you work with such a person on anything?
Ask yourself why this story has not been properly vetted. Why doesn't 60 minutes or 20/20 do a complete, historical timeline of their association? Why won't Ayers speak to the media about their relationship?
Sure, he's found safe haven in the fairy land of academia and in your mind he's "educating the poor". Mussolini made the trains run on time, too. It doesn't excuse the evil he perpetrated on the masses.

McCain is already being sued by Jackson Browne for unlawful use of one of his songs and has been reprimanded by other artists for failing to get permission to use their music. This definitely reflects more than just ignorance; he shows an offensive Bush-like disdain for laws that protect the rights of others.

Posted by: rachel | Sep 5, 2008 4:11:00 AM
I don't understand why people answer the question about Palin's lack of experience by pointing to Obama's lack of experience. Obama has been in the public spotlight for 2 years. Obama has been asked every question imaginable by every Town Hall get together, media interview, 30-40 debates from every possible source about every possible personal, political, moral perspective. Every aspect of Obama has been scrutinized about as much as humanly possible for the past two years minimum on a daily basis. The result of this process is that we know quite a bit about Obama. When put before the American voting public to make a preliminary decision about his goals, dreams, and beliefs, he was found by a majority of voting Democrats to be the Democratic choice for President. While he might not be YOUR choice for President, he is the Democratic party choice. We have been raking Obama over the coals for over 2 years looking for flaws in his character and his purpose. Like him or not, he has weathered the storm and we know pretty much what he is all about. Now compare this to what we know about Palin. Compare a reservoir to a glass of water. There is no comparison to Obama in terms of what we know about Palin's ability to serve as VP. I'm not talking about whether she is a good person or not. I am not talking about whether she will one day be qualified to be President. I like her and alot of what she says. But there are alot of people in the US I like. I am sure you know lots of pretty neat people too. I don't know one person in my circle of friends who is qualified to run our country. I mean I think it would be neat if a couple of my friends could run the country some day because once in a while they have real good ideas. But let's be real. These days are not our best days. We are in real trouble on many fronts foreign and domestic. If I had suggested a month ago that a person with NO Washington experience would be our best person to fix ANY problem confronting our country, you would have laughed me out of the city. If I had suggested a month ago that some unknown person that nobody knew would be a great choice for VP of ANY party, everyone would have collapsed in laughter. I imagine that I would have also insulted an impressive list of potential VP candidates starting with Hillary, Leiberman, Ridge, Romney, and Giuliani. These are proven hardball politicians that can fix systems if given the support and position to make it happen. That is all we can hope for every election. More importantly, this election needs our best to step forward and make it happen regardless of the party that wins. This is not the time to roll the dice, close our eyes, make a wish, and hope it comes true. I thought that everyone knew this already. The next 4-8 years might be the turning point for our country's position in the world. Technology, world trade, and the impact of the internet in the world are like tidal waves forming the "perfect wave" that can shape the world like chess pieces if systems collapse and countries emerge and terrorist forces merge. We need leaders who lead from the front. We need thinkers and dreamers who can shape the old with the new. We need a new diplomacy that knows how to talk...and listen. I am a senior citizen and I have an open mind about who I pick to lead me. I am not ignorant and I am not stupid and I am not easily fooled. Personally I was insulted with McCain's nomination of Palin considering our desperate times. This choice is the person that will "complete" him for the difficult job ahead? In an emergency, don't send me to a restaurant to cook when I don't even know where the forks are! I am sorry that Palin finds herself in this mess through no mistake of her own except to be absolutely swept away by the opportunity. Some day, maybe. But McCain has created a horror story for the GOP where everyone has to "make nice" rather than accept that someone has tampered with their "grape juice".

Yet during the primary OB embellished things and outright lied. the Tribune reprted "Despite Obama's claims of deep concern for Galesburg's proletarian victims, however, Maytag union members told Secter that Obama had done remarkably little to save the Galesburg workers' jobs. Those workers belonged to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, whose president noted that "Obama's support for Maytag workers was more show than substance."

"Did he turn the South Side of Chicago into an economic wonderland? no."
What is your point?I live in Chicago. He did not try to turn the Southside into an economic wonderland. He did not try to do anything for the Southside or the Westside, Northside, you name it. That is the problem. Mr Obama goes to Washington is a a one man show and has no room for his constituents in Illinois.
Posted by: Samantha | Sep 5, 2008 1:41:23 AM
I'm not going to comment on the extent to which he writes his own speeches because I have no way of knowing. I believe that he writes them and then has them vetted because that's the way it 'feels' to me.
Obama has spent his early years fighting for the rights of people who have little influence. Did he turn the South Side of Chicago into an economic wonderland? no.
In the state congress he passed bills, once again for people who had little influence. Among them one requiring that interrogations of people facing the death penalty be taped. Yes, it's a small thing, unless you happen to be unjustly convicted.
In the Senate he could have hung out as a new, frosh Senator and started making 'connections', work out in the gym, etc. But he pushed his way into the old boy circle and got legislation passed on Nucular Proliferation amongst other things.
Is he ambitious? Yes. Would it be better to have a long list of Bills and history as a war hero? of course. Does that mean that he isn't qualified? Well this is a matter of personal judgment and I won't belittle yours if you don't belittle mine. But, I guess that unfortunately this is how American politics has always worked. Do you think McCain will change that against the personal desires of individuals within his party?
Here, have some of my cool aid.

So how about answering my original question? Name anything he's actually gotten done besides becoming a great speaker? BTW - He doesn't write his own speeches either - a point that so many libs were pointing out about Sarah Palin last night...

Yes, but,
A. Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar (yeah I know - snob)
B. He actually spent time abroad during his education (apologist)
C. He was interested in learning new things before he was forced to. (arrogant)

As for Sarah Palin's experience, seems to me that the big hero of the Dems, Bill Clinton, had no foreign policy experience before being elected, and his devotes fans will swear to you that he was one of our greatest presidents ever... Ouch...

Eric,
One more thing. If you are actually interested in any specifics, Obama has a 14 page outline of his economic policy on his website.

Eric,
Okay I give. George was a Governor and flew in the Texas National Guard. Okay so he wasn't CinC. Maybe that's why it didn't work out so well.

All of you Obama supporters - please tell us three things that BO has EVER done that qualify him for the office of the president? OK - how about two things?... One maybe? Not what he says he will do - talk is cheap. Something he's actually done.
He is a charismatic speaker, but has never given any SPECIFICS about how he will bring change.
Obama's change = more government "solutions." More government regulations. Higher taxes on "business" means higher prices for everybody that buys from those businesses. Freedom to choose - as long as it's an approved choice.
He just whips up people's emotions that we need it. And then he picks one of the Senates biggest windbags for VP? Who is it that has bad judgment again?

It's not that I don't Like her.
It's that I don't trust her with the football.

Wow....third time to try and post my feelings about this convention compared to the Grecian Rock Festival with styrofoam colums that Gov. Palin referred to. Hopefully they are being recycled in Hollywood now. I don't want a guy who's more interested in show biz and show biz crowd. I'm for the guy and gal who put COUNTRY FIRST, and not ego. As McCain said serve a purpose higher than yourself!
Heart won't mind all the play of Barracuda....I bet they would love to endorse her...what's not to like?

If you think that working in tenements and fighting for people against government agencies that could care less is a glamorous way to spend your day, you must be in worse shape than McCain was in that tiger cage.

I wonder if Heart will send them a terse letter asking them to desist from using their music as part of their campaign.
Like Chuck Berry did.
Like Jackson Browne did.
Like Van Halen did.
Like Abba did.
Like John Mellencamp did.

Deb,
If you voted in '04 i'm guessing that you liked the greek columns.
Oh well, fashions do change.

It is funny that people mention Governor Sarah Palins’ experience. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, Rutherford B. Hayes, Woodrow Wilson, William Jefferson Clinton, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter (the worst president in our history that even today continues to screw stuff up) and others were governors first and then elected as President. Quite a few on this list were VP’s before being elected as President. Many of these were very good presidents.
Obama has done nothing but say he is about "change". He has never run a business and can’t even decide on yes and no votes. He has only spent 143 days actually doing his job working as a Senator, but has been in office 3 years. Wow if I worked this little I think I would have been fired long ago. He has no national security or military experience. All he is going to do is raise taxes on corporate America which will actually take more money out of your bank account in the end when prices are raised on goods and services provided by these businesses. By the way I make less than $50,000 a year and live in one of the highest cost of living areas in the US so I will be feeling this to.

Probably didn't get permission to use it. We'll here about a Heart "cease and desist" order tomorrow.

Yeah Deb,
The rest of us are just stupid and unpatriotic. So much for our come together moment eh?

Samantha at 12:24 expresses exactly what I feel as well. Hillary and Bill did what they had to do, and I love them, but I will do what I have to do and pull the lever for McCain/Palin.
Just can't buy obama...no matter how much the lib media shove him down my throat. I live in Calif. (always Dem) but will work my off for McCain/Palin and volunteer in my local offices....put signs everywhere around my house and on my car. I have never felt so passionate about any election in my 50 years, and so adament about COUNTRY FIRST.

Catholic Democrats is expressing surprise and shock that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's acceptance speech tonight mocked her opponent's work in the 1980s for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. She belittled Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's experience as a community organizer in Catholic parishes on the South Side of Chicago, work he undertook instead of pursuing a lucrative career on Wall Street. In her acceptance speech, Ms. Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." Community organizing is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching to end poverty and promote social justice.

Polls as of this morn, 4 days after Gov. Palin announcement...49% of Americans think Gov. Palin more qualified to be Prez to Obama's 39%...oh oh....Dems very worried and off to Alaska to dig some dirt on Gov. Palin....HAPPY HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN/PALIN

Who cares how exciting they made their convention or how pretty their stage is? I'm not voting on those things. Give me their values and ideas. Vote for the party which represents you most and you feel overall will do what you want the govt. to. I've always voted for the party as a whole and not just what the candidate up on the podium has to say. The judges and other decisions are changed by the values and ideas held by that party along w/some of the presidents right to pass a bill etc. But don't let pomp and circumstance and other frivolity cloud your judgement.

What the GOP showed the American people tonight is, they have nothing new to offer (no new policies). Also they want us to believe that McCain's experience as a POW is more important than discussing issues that affect the middle class in America.
A vote for McCain would return America to the stone age. Enough is enough.

I am a life long African American democrat who is voting for McCain. I find Obama to be very insincere and the sort of politician that says what he needs to to get into office. I look at Obama's actions as a senator from Illinois and I see nothing. Obama did not go to Washington for Illinois. He went for himself.
Obama will not wear a US flag pin so why would I expect him to stay in a cell and be loyal to his comrades? Obama strikes me as the sort of guy that would sell the US out.
Tonight I saw man that at least told the truth about his past unlike Obama's books which are embellished and filled with untruths. Why would I respect someone that belongs to a church and then severs ties with them after 20 years of membership?
I am black. Obama is black. that is not a reason for me to vote for him. He did nothing to improve my life as an Illinoisan. or an African American. In fact I find him to be a very divisive person. He will do nothing to improve my life as an American. Obama = the change we need is More garbage This is the same stuff he said during his senate race.
PS... Bush not showing at the convention is a blessing. If Bush had showed up they would have beat it death. Bush hates McCain and I applaud him for staying away. He did McCain a favor. Bush and Cheany are cowards. Hillary while your speech was great. You and Bill cannot stand BO. I would never have endorsed him. I admire your loyalty to the DNC but I saw through the act. I saw Michelle Obama frown during your speech and feign smiles when she knew the cameras were on her. The DNC was not united, it was an act. Michelle and Barry are divisive people. they will be the same in the oval office.
No Odrama.

Actually, a great closing song for the RNC. High-energy, churning guitar riff (Palin); lyrics make no %#%$%# sense (McCain).

spd,
Fact is Biden has been there longer than McCain. Why did Obama choose him? We know why McCain chose Palin. McCain has always been restrained and has had to compromise. I personally think he's serious about no pork barrels and will wield a veto accordingly. Are the American people afraid of McCain/Palin reform, or is it actually the Washington insiders that paid for lavish, wasteful parties at both conventions? Fact is, neither Obama nor McCain spoke up about that aspect, but I trust McCain to do something about it before Obama ever even gets it figured out. I'm planning to vote for Obama because I'd prefer Supreme Court nominees appointed by Democrats for a change, but I'm not going to worry if McCain actually wins it, and will enjoy the battle all the way to the finish line.
