Do the Republicans Really Want to Talk About Pennsylvania Football Team Gaffes?

September 04, 2008 2:58 PM

In York, Pa., today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., offered up another one of his trademark geographical gaffes.

"Penn State right here," he said. "Nittaly Lions," he said, referring to the Nittany Lions.

Republicans are giggling about this, sending around the YouTube and such.

One problem with it, though. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in July made a far more unfortunate Pennsylvania football gaffe.

Remember?

Oh goodie. Another election reduced to irrelevant trivia. Never mind that the incumbent is destroying the lives of millions of Americans - Obama gets the name of a football team wrong. Unforgivable!!!!!!!!!

Okay another one of Obama's mistakes. What if this is a Republican? Okay let me list them: 57 states, Uncle liberated a camp that Americans didnt liberate, Illinois is farther from Kentucky than Arkansas and lastly and the scariest, Iran and North Korea are tiny countries that don't pose a big threat to us. The scariest thing is the fact that is so arrogant that he still admts that he would oppose the surge if it came up to him again even though he said in the sentence before that it was working. This guy is a paper tiger. I could write a book about all the lies, mistakes and quotes that he has messed up that would make Bush look like a genuis.

Indeed, I DO remember that!

What's the over/under on "POW" tonight?

Westmoreland calls Obama ‘uppity.' Georgia Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland used the racially-tinged term "uppity" to describe Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday. This is what the GOP has done. John McCain could not get black votes (remember that tour of the south that failed miserably) so he went back for all the white ones he could scrape up off the floor. The Palin pick is about RACISM. Westmoreland just proved it.

"I want a President who will fight for our rights. When has John McCain done that?"

1958 to today. The years of 1967 to 1973 have particularly tough fights.

Don't go down this path. McCain has vastly more credibility Obama as a leader. If I were you I'd keep pushing the right to choose and the creationism issues. These are the two where demonstrably dreadful outcomes are possible. They simply may not split in the demographic the way either of us would like to see.

There is a branch of Penn State in York. Penn State/York. I went there for a semester.

So he mispronounced "Nittany." Is that really a serious gaffe?

Posted by: BD | Sep 4, 2008 5:19:37 PM

The problem with your comparison:

There's a difference between a gaffe (Obama) and a lie (McCain).

Hmmm why are right wingers so desperately smearing organizations that organize poor people

There are new developments in the scandal over the Bush administration's firing of eight U.S. Attorneys. One of the dismissed prosecutors has revealed that he was pressured by Republican officials to target the advocacy group ACORN for voter fraud. ACORN was working on a voter registration drive in low-income and largely minority neighborhoods in New Mexico. David Iglesias told Newsweek that he found no case worth bringing against ACORN. But that apparently did not please the White House. Last week Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's ex-chief of staff D. Kyle Sampson testified that during the run-up to the mid-term election White House adviser Karl Rove complained that Iglesias and two other U.S. Attorneys had not done enough to prosecute so-called voter fraud.

Which one is the real Obama? The one on the Greek-column decorated stage or the one in a town hall meeting?

Posted by: amy | Sep 4, 2008 4:23:42 PM

We all know about the bogus cases filed against ACORN prior to an election in violation of the Department of Justice civil rights manual rules. We also have witnessed with our own eyes that the elderly white folks who make up the Republican party are very afraid of having the poor become politically aware and active which will disrupt their pork flow. Only a

Actually there is a portion of Penn State located in York. They are all Nittany Lions. McCain and his staff are wrong again.

Posted by: Joel | Sep 4, 2008 4:14:36 PM

"He's tried 14 cases total."

So he is a civil right lawyer even though you claimed he was lying about it.

And the Motor Voter suit was not some small case.

I want a President who will fight for our rights.

When has John McCain done that?

The real comparison is look how Obama deliver when he did not have teleprompter

Posted by: amy | Sep 4, 2008 4:13:47 PM

The Greatest -
I've said for months that the best way to handle Obama is to laugh at him. There's so much material and he's so thin skinned.

She left a $27 million dollar deficit for her little 6000 population town. She sought over 700 million in earmarks the highest per capita of any state. Be very afraid, very afraid. America cannot afford more deficit building nation destroying GOP hacks at the helm.

amy,

The teleprompter crap has already been debunked.

Sarah Palin delivered a powerful speech last night, but she did not "wing it."

Which is what Erick Erickson, citing sources close to McCain, has written on his blog, RedState.

Erickson writes that "the Teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Gov. Palin was in the speech."

This claim has been picked up on Drudge and could quickly enter into the insta-mythmaking about a speech that need not be embroidered.

Perhaps there were moments where it scrolled slightly past her exact point in the speech. But I was sitting in the press section next to the stage, within easy eyeshot of the Teleprompter. I frequently looked up at the machine, and there was no serious malfunction. A top convention planner confirms this morning that there were no major problems.

Erickson writes that the same malfunction happened during Rudy Giuliani's speech earlier in the night. Again, I watched the Teleprompter during this speech, and it worked without problem. Giuliani, as is his wont, simply decided to go off-script and add some new lines, such as one attacking Obama for his "bitter" comments.

These extemporaneous comments, many of which drew huge applause, made the former New York mayor's speech run much longer than planned. So much so that a convention planner confirms that they had to scrap a planned video ahead of Palin's speech.

It came from the McCain campaign...proven to be liars...again.

"He represented ACORN. LOL. ACORN."

Yes ACORN,. Along with League of Women Voters.

I know the right fears ACRON becase ACRON organizes poor people and the right wing doesn't like that.

"My my my, I wonder why a candidate with such a stellar "record" of reform would be dealing with the an organization that's know for voter fraud?"

Wow 6 people in WA means a whole organization is corrupt?

Does that mean I can call the Republicans the party of bribery with Cunningham, Ney, Stevens, Delay?

The Alaska governor overcame several glitches and technical problems to deliver her speech without getting flustered, impressing McCain and his staff and allowing them to breathe a sigh of relief.

Foremost of the obstacles, Palin’s teleprompter was not working properly. When she took the podium, the machine rolled so quickly, it often skipped the first line or two of every paragraph on screen. The operator said he had new equipment and wasn’t sure how it would work.

However, Palin also went on stage with a slightly outdated hard copy of her speech. For various unexplained reasons, she and her closest advisers had an old draft on hand, and even had a hard time furnishing one of those for her to use. Several of the drafts were scribbled on, so one aide gave Palin a wrinkled, folded copy out of his pocket.

Officials said Palin responded in mom-like fashion, concluding, “Well, I suppose I could put a book on it and smooth it out a little. “

During one part of her speech, she couldn’t see the teleprompter because signs were blocking it. That was when she ad-libbed a line about the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull — “lipstick.”

The line was a hit with the audience. It is something she had jokingly said to staff during the speech prep process.

now compare Obama without teleprompter

Posted by: amy | Sep 4, 2008 4:07:08 PM

That's OK wingnuts. Obama is still ahead in the polls and several swing states.

Keep up the attacks. Americans will only see how hate filled you people really are.

Seriously, do you ever have anything to offer this nation other than attacking people who don't think and breath exactly as you do?
