Does the White House Not Know the RNC's Phone Number?

September 30, 2008 5:59 PM

The Republican National Committee today released an ad slamming Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for his economic plan.

But they did so by assailing the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act and Wall Street as well, which can't be helpful to the White House's goal of getting this bill passed. Can it?

The ad, called "Worse," reads like this: "Meltdown. Wall Street squanders our money. And Washington is forced to bail them out with, you guessed it, our money. Can it get any worse?"

The ad then goes on to attack how "under Barack Obama's plan, the government would spend a trillion dollars more even after the bailout. A trillion dollars. Who pays? You do. New taxes, new spending, new debt. Barack Obama's plan: it will make the problem worse."

All's fair in love and war, but does President Bush really think having this message on the airwaves will help him pass the bill House leaders are talking about re-introducing Thursday?

UPDATE: Lots of helpful folks are telling me that this ad is an "independent expenditure," meaning no coordination is allowed with the RNC arm putting it out. As Michael Corleone once said, "Who's being naïve now, Kay?"

I like the Leighton Plan. Is this the Leighton I know from Providence? At least, I see the same spirit.

"Blip she is concerned about the media story of Claire McCaskill, some other named democratic lawmakers, prosecutors and a sheriff."

This was covered by Jake a few days ago.

Basically the MO Gov put out a scare story about truth sqauders who also had law enforcement responsibilities.

He argued this was inherently bad.

He didn't say anything about McCain's truth squaders from law enforcement in SC...of course. Niether did FoxNews which only mentioned the MO people.

Its a stupid argument forwarded by right wing media and their lemmings looking to scare people.

The president has the RNC phone number, but the RNC has Caller ID and answers:

"Dominos Pizza, how can I help you?"

I don't see a problem with these truth squads. If they point out one or the other is lying, then that's a good thing.

The Republicans are listening to what their constituents, the ones who they represent, say, and not to the President, who their constituents do not approve of.
--------------
True,

They are more concerned with their own re-election than doing what is best for the country. Their constituents are fools who have absolutely no idea what is actually happening.

This is not just a small blip in our economy. The flag-waving psuedo patriots saying "we're capitalists" are idiots that buy into what they are being fed by dumb talk radio hosts and right wing morons.

We already have a mixed economic system. It is NOT pure capitalism. It never has been. Tariffs, regulations, subsidies, etc do not exist in pure capitalism. But none of you ever complained about that.

Why do you think the PRESIDENT, McCAIN, AND OBAMA think this bill should pass? Because they all just want to help the rich? Some of you idiots better get off your pompous asses and realize the consequences of rejecting the buy out. The rich will still be rich, it's the middle class that will get screwed!

Do you really believe that everything will be fine if we let our banking system collapse? That it will just slow things down for a few weeks?

No one WANTS this buy out, but it is necessary.

Infrastructure DOES NOT get built without lending. Homes DO NOT get built or bought without lending. People DO NOT go to college without lending. Everything stops. Businesses close. Economic growth stops. Recession and the Depression sets in.

Yes, it is real and it is that serious. You pinheads will be the same ones crying when you have no job and loose your homes because of your self-righteous attitudes. Then you'll point fingers at everyone else.

Carolyn,

I am sorry to point this out... but you don't need to worry about Truth Squads.

A "truth squad" is a group of paid and volunteer public relations staff employed by a campaign to correct false statements made by the opposing campaign. Both McCain and Obama have truth squads.

Though they use the word "squad," a truth squad is not a police, military, or militia unit. Rather, they are using squad in the same way that you might hear a high school cheerleading coach refer to a "spirit squad."

Responding in terror to a "truth squad" is like, to borrow from Mark Twain, mistaking the "lightning" for the "lightning bug." One will burn you to a crisp... the other is a cute and harmless insect.

I know in these uncertain times, there are many things to be frightened of in this world. Fortunately, "truth squads" are not one of them.

Cheers!

I'm really amazed. I know the reps have ghostwriters write those fake mails and messages to newspapers and blogs, but the the postings here are so out of touch withe reality.

All those posting by so-called independent, concerned democrats ...give me a break. It's the same NeoCon tricks repeating the same lies we hear from the McCain campaign.

McCain, where is your honor..

Ron Paul won't get anywhere with the media because the GOP has chosen to marginalize him.

If the GOP insiders treat him like a freak, then the media is going to stick with that narrative.

The GOP has chosen its "Maverick" and they picked Senator McCain and Sarah Palin. Why? Because they seem Mavericky, but can be trusted to follow their own ambitions, which require them to ultimately stick to the official playbook.

It's a shame what passes for common sense in the GOP these days... but that's what you get when you turn your party over to people like George Bush, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, et al.

The Democrats aren't much better. But our best bet is to punish the GOP for their stupidity rather than reward them. WHo knows... maybe they will get their senses back after 4 years in the doghouse... but I doubt it. They are just too corrupt.

McCain and Palin don't have a clue. Do you really want 4 or 8 more years of pain like we just endured? I certainly don't.
They would be the second act of Bush/Cheney.

Hi Carolyn, Can you further explain your point? Why do you feel that an Obama presidency would limit free speech. I noticed that you mentioned the situation in Missouri. Is it that specific event or are there additional factors?

Remember when Barney Frank tried to make sure that Acorn got millions of dollars from the bailout. These guys should be in jail along with Barney Frank. They are a corrupt and vicious organization worse than the Italian mob ever was. What Acorn does even affects whether our elections will be fair and could cost taxpayers plenty for years to come. This is a disgrace. Thank Obama. He is a disgrace as well. Obama prays on the young college students because they are easily influenced by his rhetoric. They don't have the experience to realize the consequences of what will happen to this country under an Obama regime.
The other champions of Obama are the blacks who will vote for him under any and all circumstances. Many of them are on these and every other blog that any bloggers are on. They are probably getting paid by Acorn, Obama's organization.

Nothing...lol. Just a dig at Obama. They should stop any ads that are not truthful or does Carolyn have a problem wit that?

Posted by: J | Sep 30, 2008 7:14:45 PM

"This is another attempt from Obama to silence the people. He lies in his campaign about McCain, but he wants to stop any ads by the Republicans. Freedom of speech would be lost with an Obama Presidency."

Can someone translate this from right winger to English and explain what it has to do with this blog post?

Carolyn,

My advice to all of the candidates is to nurture character. For your character will be your only and best weapon to close the mouth against the evil-tongues of enemies. For your character will cover and protect your reputation.

This is another attempt from Obama to silence the people. He lies in his campaign about McCain, but he wants to stop any ads by the Republicans. Freedom of speech would be lost with an Obama Presidency.

wow. where did i say that we shouldnt do anything about the crisis? i didnt. im just saying, we dont need to take the first "offer" from the wack job controlled congress. and those who voted no yesterday confirmed just that. im sure unlike you, i woke up this morning and was SHOCKED the sun was still shining. WE DIDNT DIE, AND THE WORLD DINT END LIKE SOME IDIOTS IN WASHINGTON WANTED YOU TO BELIEVE. we do need to fix the problem, but at what cost?! handing over the economic sector to the government?! on OUR dime?! not a chance in hell. but seeing that you are a die hard obama supporter, im sure you saw no problem in it at all.

Posted by: tim | Sep 30, 2008 7:02:12 PM

Be well Gwen. Glad you can still make the debate.

Ron Paul has much wisdom. I liseten to him. I am not sure why the media does not. If you can spare enough time and space to lend your ears and analyze another's point of view. If the media or society believes that there is no sense in another's words, ask them then about those words rather than criticize or silence.

j...

oh, you're absloutely right, but thats not important right now. right now, they need to do what it will take to get the economy stable again. this dosent mean 700 billion of OUR dollars, this dosent mean nationalising our economic sector, this dosent mean bailing out every big business that "needs our help". WE ARE A CAPITALIST SOCIETY. and i, along with the vast majority of america, wants to keep it that way. now, that being said, thats why i say we really need to pay close attention o every member of congress and see who makes the right decisions, and LEADS us. we will have time to punish the criminals (both from washington and wall street) and get back to common sense economics in the near future.
