Gov. Palin Says Her Unmarried 17-Year-Old Daughter Is Pregnant
September 01, 2008 12:28 PM
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," reads the statement from Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband Todd.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," they continued, referring to their 17-year-old daughter. "As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."
The Palins said that "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."
The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who announced Palin as his running mate just three days ago, said the Palins would have no further comment.
"We ask that the media respect their daughter in the same tradition that has been afforded children of past candidates," McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said.
A McCain campaign official tells ABC News' George Stephanopoulos that McCain knew of Bristol's pregnancy and "didn't believe Governor Palin should be disqualified" from the vice presidency because of it. "If Democrats try to attack, it will backfire spectacularly," the official said.
Gov. Palin is a strong proponent of teaching abstinence-only sex education to teenagers.
McCain campaign officials said the information was released to combat unsubstantiated rumors that Gov. Palin's fifth child, Trig, born in April, was actually Bristol's child.
The unsubstantiated story, circulated on liberal websites, was based on circumstantial evidence, such as photographs of Gov. Palin looking quite thin when she was supposed to be seven months pregnant, as well as Palin's own account of Trig's birth -- which included her getting on an eight-hour flight from Texas to Alaska after her water burst.
The McCain campaign refused to comment on the record about those rumors.

Just shows that Sarah faces all the same hills and mountains Dems do with their kids. Kudos to Sarah for standing with her daughter and giving her the love and support she needs. And kudos to her daughter for exercising her choice to have her baby, and to her parents for not thinking that she is being punished with a baby and forcing her to make another choice. Great human story - one that all Americans should understand!

carly in NJ: "McCain called for Rumsfeld's (former Secretary of Defense) resignation when no one else would."
He did not. He eventually criticized Rumsfeld after declaring "mission accomplished," but he never called for Rumsfeld's resignation.

calguy55== lincoln was right but im sure if he had known how education could turn into liberal socialist reeducation instead of a totalview education im sure he would have qualified his statement--nice try. liberals have made a concerted effort to push thier agenda from school age to public broadcasting to the ivy league. want proof if you want to work in hollywood you have to show your liberal stripes. more proof the media is so lopsided to the left that a dying industry--- radio has been revitalized. rush limbaugh 400 million dollar contract is proof undeniable proof of this. howw much does katie couric make? mcchange real change not more of the same.how about the genuis idea of using corn to make feul now look what the intelligencia of the libs has produced 30% increase in food and the poor all around the world starving while the liberal is watching his carbon footprint and he feels so good about it. but the problem my dear liberals you have been used by your intelligent leaders and the lobbyists for big corn. not to mention the waste of water in water stressed areas. wakeup you are a pawn

To Kris Belgium:
McCain and Palin and are WAY more qualified then Obama. That is my opinion. I have a right to my opinion and a right to VOTE the way I SEE FIT.
You may disagree with me, I am sure people can disagree in your Country. From what I can understand from your posts, you are not from the US. I am glad you are interested in the U.S. Presidential Election.
I believe that essential democratic principles were violated by the Democrat Party in the Caucus Primaries. If we are to preserve our democracy we must speak out when Voter Fraud is used to win an election. President Lincoln said, "To remain silent when one should protest makes cowards of men [and women]."
I AM speaking out. My party, the Democrat Party is now corrupted by the process used to nominate Obama as the Candidate for POTUS. The Means does not justify the Ends.
I believe this corruption can not be rewarded. I also believe that McCain is the better choice for many reasons. I do not make this choice without a great deal of deliberation.
As I stated in an earlier post, I have never chosen to vote for a Republican candidate for POTUS until NOW!!
McCain stood up to George W. Bush on many issues when Democrats would not. McCain is not liked by the NeoCons in the Republican Party and McCain called for Rumsfeld's (former Secretary of Defense) resignation when no one else would.
We need more courageous people in government like McCain and Palin. I do not agree with them on everything. However, there are enough issues that I do agree on that make this choice a viable one for me.
The "fear and smear" tactics employed by the Obama Campaign will not work with me and they will not work with millions of American voters.
Most importantly, we do not need more elected officials like Obama/Biden who represent the "old boy" corrupt Democrat Party machine. The DNC could have abided by its own rules and selected Hillary Clinton as the Nominee. Unfortunately, it is too late for that. Obama/Biden will loose in November.
I will proudly cast my vote (as is my right) for McCain/Palin.

It is hard to believe the car/gun logic is still used. Guns are made to kill, automatic weapons are made ONLY to kill people - quickly. It is thus no surprise when they work. Likewise, alcohol is made to dull the senses, which makes it not surprising that cars combined with alcohol kill the most people. If people using the car/gun metaphor are voting for McCain/Palin, it should make you think twice.

kris belgium---thank for taking interest in our country election. i appreciaate what you said-- being pro-life and supporting gun ownership are not hypocritical. .i would say the same resaoning then if u are antigun because innocent children die from gunshots. then all the people in the world that are antigun for that reason should stop driving cars-- 40,000 people die each year in car accidents in the usa alone. in the iraq war 4000 americans died yet in the same time period 300,000 people have died in car accidents. where is code pink and the rest of the antigun liberals. what you need my dear friend is perspective you have been brainwashed by socialism. car are the real killer not guns. in africa people are slaughtered by machetee and knives. this brainwashing is trying to make this coutry similar but there are many in this country that are real americans like the ones that kicked the nazis out of europe. and removed saddam huesein army out of kuwait. we dont like tyrants especially in are own country. sarah pallin will finish the job. she is a warrior queen

I think the Obama camp have reason to worry about McCain's running mate Sarah Palin, she is electrifying the base and she is getting a lot of attention from the media, whether its good or bad she is getting attention, and McCain just might win this election.

There are plenty of working moms out there that have daughters that DON'T get pregnant, so blaming the parents is just plain stupidity. It is NOT a Republican or a Democratic issue, it is a family issue.
Posted by: Denise | Sep 1, 2008 6:30:36 PM
I would hate to be a Republican right now - having no viable chance at the White House. It actually seems cruel to pick on Palin considering that the Democrats have always been the favorites to win in November simply due to Bush. Might as well let them spin it out, and not until November crush their hopes of success. As if Palin could really make things worse for their campaign.

To Jack Bender:
Who Cares, REALLY WHO CARES!!!
We have REAL issues to concern ourselves with...like the economy, war in Iraq, global warming, curing cancer, price of gasoline, people's ability to buy a home, the folks who are suffering because of Gustav.
I thought Obama directed his supporters to focus on the folks needing help because of the Hurricane. Listen to him, that would be a better use of your time.
McCain because he is truly a compassionate man is focused on helping others, the victims of Hurricane Gustav.
Perhaps you should take a lesson from the people you so willing attack.
At least, right now, Senator Obama has the sense to do so!!!

"Don't push your abstinence only agenda that stops kids in school from getting the facts and sex and birth control."
Now don't start - I meant to say "facts ABOUT sex"..

Let's be clear about one thing. In this day of media and blogger scrutiny any negative issues about a candidate and their family are disclosed. The is an act of self defense - stop the rumors and whispers by being honest (straight talk) to the public.
Points
1. If McCain knew about Bristol's pregnancy - why didn't he disclose it?
2. If mamma Sarah knew when did she know?
3. Why was pregnancy hastily announced after rumors about Bristol being Trig's mom surfaced?
4. Where are pictures of proud mom (Sarah) during her pregnancy?
5. Sarah Palin was told she carried a child with down syndrome. Where was the press on this? What a great day for anti-abortion publicity - public figure to carry down syndrome baby to term.
5. Where was Sarah Palin when she went into labor? Was it Texas?
6. Would a women take an eight hour flight while in labor? After giving a keynote address. (where are those pictures of a very pregnant Sarah?)

to carly in NJ,
I don't believe you.
DO you really see Palin as president??
Seriously?
Really ??
Are you sure ?
Really ?
( me I am more than an independent, I can not even vote but are you sure ???)
I don't understand that,
then you can just taken anyone from the street and put him or her in the white house

A McCain aide was quoted as saying "Leave the kids alone." I'll make them a deal. I'll leave your kids alone and you leave MY kids alone. Don't push your agenda that would stop my daughter from having an abortion if she is raped. Don't push your abstinence only agenda that stops kids in school from getting the facts and sex and birth control. They should be getting that information at home but not all of them do. Deal?

Number 1-To give life is a Gift,if not we would not be reading or commenting on all of the wrong issue's.This is about our country and the mess that our children and their children etc.will have to deal with.I don't care if you are a dem.,independant,or a rep.we are in this together. We don't have to believe in the same things, but we do need to get along as best as we can.We only have ONE LIFE,and we all will be held accountable for the way we live it.Number 2-Watch what we say!I'm living proof what goes around, does come back around.Number 3-LIVE and LET LIVE!!!Thank You for your time.PEACE

I read that democrats are just trying to find things to pick apart Palin with and that the pregnancy of her daughter shouldn't be an issue, if that were true then Clinton wouldn't have been impeached.
It is a big deal, especially since Palin is an advocate for teaching only abstinence. It is both ignorant and irresponsible to teach only abstinence, to think that you would be promoting sexual activity by educating your children on proper contraception is so incredibly naive; kids have NEVER emulated their parents and they WILL falter to peer pressure, the idea behind good parenting is that you instill as many of your morals and values as you can while still making sure that they know what the alternatives are should they deviate, and they will, it is all part of growing up.

Reasonable people who read this sick stuff are NOT impressed. It just underscores how totally twisted many Obama Supporters are and that means we will work harder and donate MORE money to elect McCain/Palin. We need to save our great democracy!!!

This is still pretty fishy and even if the wingnuts are going to say that this announcement by Palin debunks the false pregnancy story, bloggers have at the very least forced the holy rolling conservative VP nominee to admit that her daughter got knocked up.
The hypocrisy here, though, is so thick you need a chainsaw to cut through it. Palin used Trig as a prop to demonstrate her Christian Right bonafides while telling a story about how he came into the world that just about any medical professional, including my pediatric nurse mom unbelievable. Palin's doctor is now even backing off some of her ealier statements about approving that plane trip from Dallas to Alaska when words such as "malpractice" and "negligence" began to be aimed her way.
And had it been, say, Chelsea Clinton that got pregnant while still a teen, Limbaugh and that whole gaggle of reactionary zealots would have used it as emblematic of what they would call leftwimg depravity, and Dobson would be hurling epithets such as "fornicator" at Chelsea rather than the compassionate cant he burbled vis a vis Bristol.
Obviously, the abstinence education Bristol got in her own home did not work, just as studies have indicated that it is not effective.
Bristol has been put into a no win position by her mother's political ambitions. I hope the best for her, since she is a completely innnocent party here, but I don't think this story ends here. This Palin announcement is a stall tactic and if McCain is elected, there is going to be a fact changing annouuncement by the White HOuse Press Secretary while Palin goes on holiday. You heard it here first.

Well at least the Vice Presidential residence is the Naval Observatory and not the White House. Maybe most won't notice the new RV pad being poured so the young couple can have a place of their own.
Just so it doesn't distract Palin in her transition from administering a government awash in billions of oil taxes and with little infrastructure upon which to spend it, what with most cities and villages rarely having roads out 5 miles [I think Juneau's furthest went for 20 when I lived up there].
And what of a governor who chooses to slaughter magnificent animals [esp. bear and elk]. Does anyone believe she needs the meat and hides to sustain her family?
Not to mention her abuse of power in using her office to get her sister's ex, a state patrolman, fired.
And poor Ketchikan [one of Alaska's largest cities]. She had joined them in their quest for a bridge over to their airport [expensive because it had to be tall enough to clear the cruise ships] to gain their support for the governorship. Now she abandons them. A VERY citical flip-flop to that district.
This is the mother[?] who would be President?
Tell White House staff not to be too fast in packing away all the hoe-down supplies and fiddles.

Hi carly in NJ,
You would have been voting like that anyway.
I have found a site with proof that the world is actually flat..
I would go for mainstream journalisme to get the facts.
There are enough of both sides to blow a story like that up. This looks a bit pale.
enjoy
