Key House GOP Opponent of Bailout Bill Changes Tune: "It Sucks" But New Version Must Pass, He Argues

September 28, 2008 6:51 PM

House Republicans are talking about the new bill right now behind closed doors.

I'm told by someone in the room that Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., ranking Republican on the House Budget Committee and an admired conservative within his caucus, just made what I'm told was a credible argument FOR the bill.

Said Ryan of the bill: "It sucks."

But, he said, it has to pass to preserve the free market system and stave off a financial collapse.

That's a very good sign for its passage -- Ryan was one of the leading opponents of the bill just a few days ago.

Here's the latest version of the bill, if you want to read it.

I'll have more on the changes and the politics of it all on Good Morning America Monday morning.

Leonard Peltier: Your best statement so far. 6:53:36 PM

jimbo must be friends with the predatory lending folks.

Good news people. Jim Kramer says he wants in on the deal. Bear Sterns had the cash to buy up a bunch of the loans and Buffet jumped in as well.

So in five or ten years all will be back to greed and avarice!

Folks do some research and you'll be surprised to find out- like I was- that it is actually the Democrats who pushed for mortgages and money for everyone - and many people didnt even have to prove their income to get a loan. Obama has extensive ties to ACORN and its female leader Madeline Talbott who forced many banks to suspend their usual credit standards. Obama worked for the Chicago Woods Fund and they issued a report that practically bragged about "pulling the wool over peoples eyes. As the leader of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge Obama was also able to channel more funding Talbots way- which was used for ACORN. Now Obama is pulling more wool over more peoples eyes. Wake up already people - this Pied Piper has alot of secrets that still havent come out yet- he cannot be trusted !!

I enjoy reading comments from all you pinheads who think if we just let the markets fail- all will be just fine.

You understand that without having banks in a position to lend, our economy shuts down right. No, not a "sluggish" economy, but full blown recession and potential depression.

If managed correctly, the bill can make money for the government in the long run. They are buying banks, not handing them an open check.

The armchair-economist bloggers and people who want the crisis summed up in two sentences have no clue as to what they are saying.

Neither McCain or Obama had anything to do with this bill other than mutual grandstanding.

colorado is applying "Little Big Man" logic. It didn't work too well for Custer as I recall.

Yes, us Democrats are THRILLED about bailing out the Bush Admin.

It is a vast left-wing conspirpracy. We're ready to plunk down $350B just to make the Reps part with the other half.
The thrill of it all!

I am voting because I have kids in the military. They need us all.

Posted by: Don in Tampa | Sep 29, 2008 2:57:51 AM

Don't give up. Please vote.

I just LOVE it! All of a sudden, the republicans want to "free us from foreign oil" [8 years too late] and they aren't in favor of the bailout even though their voting record on "deregulation" and lack of oversight by their people brought down the financial markets!

I think if anybody has a right to complain about this bailout, its the democrats. We have to end of paying for it even though we didn't vote those idiots in office in the first place.

Posted by: givemeabreak64 | Sep 29, 2008 2:34:36 AM

Sure the bail out sucks. But you know what sucks even more? The Republicans over the last eight years or so who got us into this mess.

this bailout bill sounds familiar, it sounds like the condi rice mushroom cloud moment in the rush to war.

think about it, the dems are aligned with george bush, while at the same time trying to distance themselves from that alliance. that in itself should give any intelligent person a reason to question the bailout.

>>>He is the gentleman who gave an announcement regarding progress on the bill and while I, like many think the thing just plain stinks, Mr. Gregg not only did a magnificent job of explaining how we got where we are, but also praised all of the congressional leaders who are struggling to make sure our economy does not collapse tomorrow.

I disagree, minutes later, the House said they were not supporting that verison. I called Gregg's office and said I hope he lost his seat if he voted for the bill. He was shaking and not making any clear sense when he tried to explain what they did on this bill. He feels safe in NH, I suspect. I hope the bill fails. At first, I was for this but now, I see it's terribly wrong to make people pay for their corruption and greed.

I agree wakeup people. I watch Fox and I am a Democrat. Fox is more conservative but at least they attemot to be fair and ask hard hitting questions of DEMS and Repubs. I think the thing about Obama supporters is that there is no substance or logic to Obama as a candidate so the liberal press basically can't ask anything of Obama supporters that will not hurt there credibility.

So they basically sit and let the BOTS spew lies without questioning them. On FOX news the reporters will question the BOTS and they unravel because BOTS arguments are full of HOLES.

response to wakeuppeople; i no longer even bother with cnn or nbc. i switch between fox and abc for more objective reporting.
to think just a few months ago i would have never, ever, caught myself watching fox news.
i have totally censored cnn/nbc the pro obama propaganda is dangerous for our democracy.

We need to vote these stooges out of DC.

wakeuppeople i agree completely with your post thank you for articulating exactly what i believe. many would agree with you.

Posted by: colorado | Sep 28, 2008 11:43:19 PM

I watch all the networks people. I spend a lot of time evaluating. I see Fox conservative bias, I see the ABC Liberal Bias, they both swing moderately right and left. But when you look at CNN, and NBC I see a huge Liberal shift and an AGENDA to get the democratic candidate nominated. Its embedded in their talk shows and national news. This is a dangersous precedent, and does not serve the peoples interest. REPORT THE NEWS. DONT MAKE IT.
If they found a Koran shoved up Obamas butt you wouldnt hear about it on CNN or NBC, and ABC would blame it on Palin.

If they found out McCain had five gold teeth it would be headlins cause most people onlyu could afford one or dont have dental insurance.

FOX attempts to report both sides, but goes out of there way to provide Cover for ther right. The lefty nets just skip negative left news altogether.

If you deny it, your denying your kids futures because if one party ever gets a hold of the airwaves goodby choice. Then we might as well have Putin over here cause thats exactly what they got there, and thats what they no have in Venezuela. Those of you that are happy to see the strong Left Media, and it is huge, you just keep venezuela in mind.

I just viewed this bill (TARP) on Section 2 it discusses what goal they are trying to bail out:
gearing to protect home values, college funds, retirement accounts and life savings.
trying to preserve home ownership-attmepting to promote job and economic growth-and a "relief Program"---protecting mortgages on or before March 14, 2008-Now these are good things to protect-these goals don't suck-but....

The concern is that it will be one person in charge and then a umbrella of committees working with guidelines, rules and regulations. One of my main concerns in this proposal only an Annual audit? Who will be on these committees? I do not believe that this is a good idea-they need to have a monthly audit for the next year-there needs to be an adhoc committee to research and setup guidelines in reporting once a month. Annual audit gives way too much room and power to one individual to cover up mistakes-they need tight monthly audits-

Keep in mind that McCain voted down I believe twice the Job -economic growth plan, voted for deregulation twice and Obama voted for the economic package and and did give a great floor speech on why he was in favor. Obama went forth on the floor to vote for tighter regulation. What he said in the debate is exactly what he said on the senate floor. You should look at those records-

The toxic debt created by the fraudsters is beyond redemption by ALL of the tax payers of the world. That garbage is measured in the $100's of TRILLIONS. All this bailout is about is one more swing at bat for the gangsters who got us there in the first place.

The "Bailout" is a band aid. The patient is bleeding to death

Posted by: nova | Sep 28, 2008 11:14:55 PM

wakeuppeople i agree lets talk term limits.

Posted by: colorado | Sep 28, 2008 11:13:44 PM
