Liberal Rock Stars to McCain-Palin Campaign: Stop Using Our Songs
September 07, 2008 10:52 AM
The McCain-Palin jukebox options are shrinking.
The latest rockers to tell the Republicans to cease spinning their albums are the women from Heart, who were chagrined to hear their song "Barracuda" play at the Republican convention as Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hit the stage. Palin, a star high school basketball point guard, was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda." The official Heart website states
that "Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart have informed the McCain/Palin Campaign that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease-and-desist notice to not use one of Heart's classic songs 'Barracuda,' as the congratulatory theme for Sarah Palin. The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission. We have asked the Republican campaign not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."
And on Entertainment Weekly's website
the Wilson sisters add that "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late '70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."
This is not the first time a liberal rock star has asked McCain to stop spinning his or her tunes.
In February, John Mellencamp
had his publicist Bob Merlis write the McCain campaign to suggest it might be better if McCain stopped playing "Our Country" at McCain rallies, given Mellencamp's liberal views and endorsement of former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC.
"Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain's efforts?" asked Merlis in his letter. "Logic says that the facts might prove to be an embarrassment, were they to be circulated widely." Merlis told reporters that Mellencamp was uncomfortable with McCain using his music.
In August, Jackson Browne sued McCain and the Ohio GOP sued McCain and the Ohio Republican Party for the Ohio GOP's use of his song "Running on Empty" in an attack ad against Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
Browne's attorney, Lawrence Iser, told the Los Angeles Times that the McCain campaign was also named in the suit because they believe "McCain and his campaign were well aware of the ad."
Van Halen also took issue with the McCain campaign's use of the song "Right Now" during its Dayton, Ohio, rally where Palin was introduced to the American people as McCain's running mate. MTV news reported
that "Van Halen’s members aren’t too happy about it. According to the band’s publicist, the members had no idea McCain was going to use their song as his entrance theme and were never approached by McCain’s camp for permission to use the track. 'Had they asked, permission would not have been granted,'" Van Halen's publicist said. A similar situation played out in 2000, with Mellencamp, Sting and others expressing chagrin that then-Gov. George W. Bush was using their songs to fire up supporters.

Unfortunately for them, the NATION has ALREADY had that song emblazoned forever on their brain in association with Palin (Thanks to the National broadcast, hee hee). Once again for the libs; Too little; Too late. I thought those two were dead from drugs already anways...

And they wonder why their sales have dropped, they want to only sale to liberals but the liberals think they are entitled to it for free so they do not but the records, and since the country is over 60% conservative they do not buy the musice either.
I for one will not buy a record or download it if the singer get politically involved and that goes for the movies also !
Celebrities think they are more then what they are!
I have gotten to the point I change radio stations when a political active musician's song comes on!! especially if they are liberal!
I missed only two of JLos movies because in them were 2 anti-Americans.
If they want to start playing politics then they are open for criticism!!
By the way who is Heart, never heard of them, but hearing the song at the convention IU was planning on looking for the CD, but now I will not!!
and I am sure the other more then half the country will not bother to either!!

Law and order repubs breaking copyright laws? Oh, say it isn't so.
Maybe Ted Nugent can come up with a new one for her.

LOL! Republicans have no big-name actors or musicians because they are not creative people. I hope they get sued for ignoring copyright laws.

Hey, the RNC paid to license the stuff. But don't let the facts get in the way of a lunatic rant. Go ahead, sound like a twit.

I have been a Rock Fan all my life and contributed to their lively hoods while their were in their heydays. I don't remember anyone telling me that I couldn't support them and make them rich because I was a Republican.
If our Rock and Movie Stars are so liberal that they would support Obama, the Left Winger, freinds of, Bernadine Dohrn, William Ayers, Father Plaeger, Nadhmi Auchi, Antoin Rezko, Rev. Wright, Exelon Corp., Carl Rove, Gov. Blagojevich, Trinity Babtist Church, Louis Farrakhan, Frank Marshall Davis, Rashid Khalid and Saul Alinsky, and give our Country away, then I will no longer support them.
This is one True American that will no longer pay their salaries. Senator Obama is an abomination and should have been thouroghly vetted, but wasn't. He should never be allowed to become President of our United States. He speaks a pretty word, but his leanings are clear. Death to the American Way.
NoBama! NoWay!

Hey Christie and Ghost. Rush's them song is done by Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.
Its called the Internets, maybe you should use it to learn instead of burn....
The Rush Limbaugh Show - Theme song issue
Almost from the start of his program, Limbaugh used an edited and looped version of the powerful instrumental riff from The Pretenders' "My City Was Gone" as the theme to his show. This song was written by Chrissie Hynde to bemoan the effects of overdevelopment on her native Ohio. Limbaugh loved the riff, hated the message, and thought he could both attract listeners and annoy opponents by playing it.
When a landmark copyright case was decided in the 1990s, musical artists gained control over their works when performed thematically. Briefly in 1999, Limbaugh was forced to suspend playing the song while negotiating with Hynde. Hynde eventually decided to allow Limbaugh to use it, with Limbaugh paying Hynde approximately $500,000/year which she donates to the animal rights organization PETA. Hynde explained that she doesn't agree with Limbaugh but her parents are big fans.

blah blah blah. Fact is, the RNC really needs to get someone to update "Deutschland Uber Alles" for them. No legal issues there.........ethics? ppphhht!

These musicians are twits, your music is great but your cry baby attitude about who is playing your music sucks. You should have thought about the impact of making your music public years ago. But you didn't, so SHUT UP TWIT'S. People play music for all sort of reasons. If the Republicans want to use these two twits music who cares. If the Twits will only allow socialist to play their music, then there is a lot of us who should be sued. Copywrite laws don't apply hear, but Maturity does. On the other hand it only shows that the me generation still exist and hasn't grown up yet.

doug showed his ignorance when he wrote:
"You just gotta feel really sorry for these liberals sometimes. Okay, if you are going to use an analogy, rule of the day is, "think" first. your analogy, if applied here, would be synonomous to you "selling" your house but then trying to dictate to the buyer what they may do with the house months or even years after the paperwork has been signed and the deal closed."
Oh the irony of an idiot GOPer telling someone to "think first" when he obviously doesn't understand the first think about intellectual property laws. When you buy a CD you don't buy the rights to the songs on it you idiot. Look on the back of most CDs and you will most likely see the words, "For private home use only" or something similar.
Typical GOP toadie, showing his ignorance and probably proud of it too.

Rose,
As Canadians their convictions tend to be somewhere other than the international policy forced onto all Americans by an administration that was going to 'unite' America so many years ago.
People say it isn't about Bush anymore,
but I suspect the Wilsons don't see it that way, and why should they.

Palin appeals to simple minded Republicans. Thankfully they are too conflicted and embbrresed to vote this year.

I'm a proud "LIBERAL" Democrat and Heart has been my all time favorite band for two decades, but I'm a little embarrassed by their rigid and slightly hostile stance over this. As Canadians it would'nt hurt them to be gracious. Pop song themes at political events has always struck me as facile and virtually meaningless. I'snt the message what we should focus on? The nickname "Sarah Barracudda" sounds juvenile and dumb too. That's my two cents and I might add that I'm considering voting for McCain if his party can get over their "Liberal" bashing.

"From the tone of these comments the right is really rabid this year. They don't want artists to have control of their own material. That's like not wanting people to have control of their own houses "
You just gotta feel really sorry for these liberals sometimes. Okay, if you are going to use an analogy, rule of the day is, "think" first. your analogy, if applied here, would be synonomous to you "selling" your house but then trying to dictate to the buyer what they may do with the house months or even years after the paperwork has been signed and the deal closed. I know, many of you liberals still can't see it.
I'll try to be more clear here...when you sell or licence something, you give up control of that very thing you sold or licnensed. Its about honoring a contractual agreement. Get it now?

This request doesn't make any sense? I would have thought the RNC were the only ones still playing their music.
Now there will be none!
Oh well, can't say that I'll miss it.

Too bad, I was going to buy the old heart CD, but not now.

I love how the headline adds "liberal" instead of just saying rock stars. So does not supporting McCain/Palin make you liberal? What about all the moderates who disagree with their fiscal polices and tendency to mix religion and politics. Once again Jake Trapper shows his partisan leanings, he should be removed from doing regular political news. If he wants to make commentary, give him opinion column for it, but make him remove the continual republican slants from his reporting.

HEART should actually appreciate that their piece was allowed to be heard by millions who've never even heard of them. Nancy, et al, are has-beens and should be grateful for the exposure.
Too bad for them. I grew up listening to HEART - I tossed my CD's today.
SARAH POLIN ROCKS!!!!!

I tossed out all my John Cougar music a long time ago when I got sick of hearing him spouting off his liberal socialist views. That was about the same time he went from playing for thousands to playing for hundreds. I can't believe I ever liked that stuff anyway. As another rocker once said; "Won’t get fooled again” Another thing: these ‘artist’ don’t have any control over their music, the music industry executives make sure of that. They need to stop whining, they’re just in it for the money and the fame anyway.
