McCain, 2008

September 11, 2008 9:31 AM

As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin sits down for her first media interview today with ABC News' Charles Gibson -- 13 days after her nomination was announced -- it's worth mentioning that the man on the top of the ticket, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., hasn't had a press conference in almost a month.

He used to be the most accessible presidential candidate in modern American history, and he prided himself on that.

No longer.

The last time he took questions from his press corps was on Aug. 13.

The calculation seems to be that the media is against McCain, anyway, so what's the downside in avoiding the questions reporters have, or even in saying things that are demonstrably false?

Why is it that Republican's (like the 'guy named keith' would rather focus on Michelle Obama rather than the policies of the 'potential' next president?

Repubs can't attack Obama's senate record.
They can't compete with his 'popularity'.
They can't compete with the plans he laid out (that beat Hillary) if he were to become president.

They'd rather sidestep REAL issues that affect everyday people like you and me, and try to BS the general public into believing complete and utter falsehoods (like Obama wants to teach SEX Ed to kindergardners COME ON)!

Search the FACT FINDING media (not the biased media like FOX) for the real truth and make your decisions in Nov based on TRUTH, not on lies and deception...

Irma, I want the person that is suppose to be ready on day one to lead this nation be able to speak to the public at a moments notice without a script. Proves they know something.

She consented to give here first interview on September 11th? That's crass and purely Republican. Take advantage of people paying respects on this day. There are no depths that McCain
won't sink to try to win this election.

This interview of McCain with tough questions about Palin should be on all MSM. If the link given here does not work, go straight to Politico and scroll to the third story. There is a video of a Maine reporter asking McCain tough questions that I hope Charles Gibson asks when he interviews Palin.

Irma, I saw the CNN anchors during Palin's return to Alaska last night too. It was a joke... especially Anderson Cooper. You have to wonder... do they really think people are so stupid that they don't notice their incredible bias? I think every time they reveal how blatantly biased they are, like Cooper did last night, it only fuels the support of McCain.

In light of the journalistic malpractice committed by the mainstream media against Governor Paliln over the past two weeks, Senator McCain is very smart to short shrift them, one and all. Just keep talking straight over their big heads and directly to the people.

"The calculation seems to be that the media is against McCain anyway..."

Now why on earth would they think that?!!

DL you are misquoting. He said his great-uncle. And he introduced him at the DNC convention. And he was, in fact, a member of the platoons that first entered and freed Auschwitz. We can disagree on issues, but what does this kind of lying really do but cloud the real issues in this campaign?

Posted by: Kate Mom of Twins | Sep 11, 2008 2:11:42 PM

Obama: "my uncle was part of the U.S. forces that liberated Auschwitz."

How many lies has this man uttered?

Posted by: dl | Sep 11, 2008 1:54:55 PM

Perfect example: Yesterday, Palin was headed to Alaska. She had enthusiastic supporters waiting at the airport. Meanwhile, the CNN pundits sat there ridiculing the fact that she had supporters waiting and the fact that they were covering the VP candidates landing. They let everyone know that there were teleprompters, that there was a person pumping up the crowd; trying to deminish the fact that she is popular. All this was true of Obama too in the beginning; yet they NEVER felt the need to let us know he had someone riling up the crowd, or that he had teleprompters waiting for him EVERYWHERE. Only those who saw it in person knew, but we didn't care. Finally when Palin spoke, you could tell she was nervous at first, eventually you could see the charming person she is. She does have something, just as Obama and HILLARY do. You don't have to knock someone just because you don't agree with their politics, especially if your job is giving NEWS. Apparently that is not what CNN is. Therefore, they should just call themselves opinionaters rather than reporters. For those Republicans who found this upsetting; This Liberal Woman noticed...I remember when they did that crap to HILLARY.

I think michelle will make a great first lady and it will be great having some young normal kids in the white house again!

The press aided and abetted this country's march into a stupid and pointless war by mindlessly regurgitating the lies thrown at it by Bush/Cheney/Rove. This was, perhaps, understandable in light of where we all were post 9/11.

Until yesterday, the press was aiding and abetting the McSame/Palin/Rove daily dribble of distractions, distortions, divisions and lies. I hope the "pig" business put an end to this nonsense in the same way that not finding WMD's put and end to the press serving simply as an outlet for Bush/Cheney/Rove talking points.

Why do networks air negative ads for free on "news" shows and then discuss their "effectiveness" instead of whether they're true or false? Why does the press let McCain get away with endlessly repeating that "Obama will raise your taxes" when every independent group that's analyzed the candidates' tax plans (including the Heritage Foundation) has said that this is simply not true? Why does the press let Palin get away with repeating things day after day that are demonstrably false?

If the press were doing its job, organizations like "fact checker" wouldn't be necessary. The press should be the "fact checker." I hope that's where we're headed.

So the media made McCain shy away from them.....Gee I wonder why? We saw why with Hillary. Made me HATE MSNBC and CNN. In my opinion they have lost as much credibility as FOX. Why should ANYONE trust media with an agenda? It's not reporting information, it is providing a format with a bunch of WHATEVERS/WHOEVERS to voice their opinions as facts to a general public. It's irritating, bias info 24/7.

Posted by: irma | Sep 11, 2008 1:10:02 PM

It's that the press hasn't made him answer a question, not that McCain hasn't answered a question.

The press has been lazy this season.

From Watergate to 2008. Such a fall this profession has taken.

Posted by: kravitz | Sep 11, 2008 1:09:11 PM

So McCain and Palin think that the media is out to get them?? Wow.

I thought we were electing a President and Vice that had to tough. I thought we were electing people that might have to face down some pretty tough customers around the world.

Is that whining I hear from the Republicans. Is the big bad media scaring you?
Always so tough when it comes to helping people in our country that need help and always so weak when it comes to asking actual policy questions.

What a bunch of cry babies.

Sarah Palin will be on with Charlie Gibson tonight. Let's see what a good reporter Charlie is. I hope he is going to ask her some questions about the issues facing America today.
I hope he gets to teh nitty gritty since we have not been able to vet her like we have vetted all the other candidates.
The time is too perilous for us to have a VP that hides from the press while she "crams".
Let's see if Charlie is Barbara Walters tonight or if he is Edward R Murrow.
It will be a statement as much about him as it will be a statement about her.

"The calculation seems to be that the media is against McCain" - Jake Tapper

----------

That is a fact. look at your own blog. You've spent the past two weeks defending Obama and attacking McCain. Why is it when Obama stretches the truth (lie) and smears McCain as being senile (can't remember how many homes he has), you do not spend as much time defending McCain?

Posted by: OxyCon | Sep 11, 2008 12:35:01 PM

And Obama's availability?

Posted by: Wade | Sep 11, 2008 12:16:30 PM

I noticed that too dl, the priblem with Michelle is that it is difficult to keep her hatred (for what seems like everything) on the wraps. You could tell how feigned her support was during Hillary's speech at the DNC convention. I find her to be very polarizing.

Posted by: A Guy Named Keith | Sep 11, 2008 12:14:10 PM

When will Obama allow strident Michelle to mingle with reporters?

Posted by: dl | Sep 11, 2008 12:11:38 PM

Dare Nigeria

Yep - Obama definitely needs divine intervention.

His fault! Not everyone Else's.
